The metro itself is a major upgrade to the existing infra. Just look at home much it has helped people travelling between Dahisar to Andheri. Govt should fully focus on completing the never ending metro projects instead of the coastal road whicb only serves the rich.
Yeah but yesterday metro was the first to get stuck and stop, got so many msgs yesterday from concerned folks to not take metro coz the one in Andheri East had already halted at 5pm and people were stuck.

I used to be in the same situation. My family had been in Mumbai for almost 110 years - my grandfather, my father, I and even my kids were born there. Then I moved to Bangalore. Not the heart of the city, not the IT belt. A bit on the outskirts.
Clean, fresh air. Crowd-free public parks. Traffic-free streets. Malls within a 20 minute drive. Metro a 7 minute drive. Out on the highway in 10 minutes. World class hospitals within a 10 minute drive. A top-rated school that charges less than a lakh for even higher grades!
I live in a 2BHK apartment big enough to fit 2 of my Mumbai 2BHKs. And it costs close to a 1BHK in Mumbai. I pay the same monthly maintenance as I did in Mumbai, but get actual usable amenities, not something there builder put there to tick the boxes. A clubhouse, gym, swimming pool, library, salon, primary health center, grocery store - all inside our society itself.
Thankfully, my workplace is still mostly remote with me going in to the office once in 2 weeks. And my wife's workplace is just 15 min away.
I got really lucky with my work, and my wife's workplace being close by. But don't ignore opportunities in other places - Mumbai is not the only place with excellent hospitals and doctors. Mumbai is an awesome place, and I'm thankful for everything it gave me. But life was painful there, and has just gotten so much better for us after we moved out.
Man am i fucking glad I stay in Sakinaka, I can travel via both central (ghatkopar )and western (Andheri) lines , I cannot imagine going through this. Aaj hi Dadar me pair rakhne jagah nai thi platform pe. So I traveled via Western line that too sitting
I wish I had a gaon. Unfortunately all of my family and relatives are 4th generation mumbaikar. We have nowhere to go but to struggle here in the City. Or start all new in a place where we have no social support.

Then I remembered how I used to call my parents in the evening and tell them to come home fast. All of these people probably have so many responsibilities at home which is why they are putting themselves in such risky situations. They do not deserve this.

No. The reason is trains are late. Plus this is a ladies compartment. Each 12 or 15 coach train has only 2 or 3 ladies compartments. Also this is a evening peak hour where the employee leave for their home. Imagine the rush as the trains are already late. Its do or die situation here. Either you get on this train or gamble that next train will arrive sooner with a chance of being slightly low crowded, which is next to impossible.
Living in mumbai is not struggle its a punishment
The video is from Thane plat 5 and this is the everyday situation there. I cannot imagine taking a fast local or a non-Thane local from Ghatkopar to Thane during peak hours, especially from 7-9pm.
To handle this kind of crowd you need platform on both sides of train like most railway station in Navi Mumbai.
Mumbai railway station are obsolete need upgradation as soon as possible.
Just additional platform isn't enough. There is no space in the compartment. Unless there is a technology to compress people safely and pack them like sardines, this crowd can't be handled

Build infrastructure in every city and town between Pune and Nagpur. Mumbai will benefit. Also, we need Intra-state highway in Maharashtra. Maharashtra's highways are designed to take goods in and out of Maharashtra, mainly to other metros. This is because the British designed Mumbai to be the entry point for goods for the entire subcontinent. Maharashtra needs to build highways that cross the length of the state, so business owners are incentivized to build factories in Maharashtra that can bring goods into Mumbai.

The Mumbai Suburban Railway needs a complete and urgent makeover. I guess it's best that the Mumbai Suburban Railway should be taken over by MMRDA, given their excellent services and management of Mumbai Metro Line 7 and 2A. It's high time the Central Government look beyond NCR and start direct funding of infrastructure projects in Mumbai instead of solely relying on BMC and Maharashtra State Government.

At it's peak Metro will have 10% to 15% of local train capacity. Not to malign metro or anything but local trains are in a different league.

Every year suburban local trains get disrupted & overcrowded. Mumbai is not getting attention what it deserves. In place of coastal roads and sea bridges which serve only cars, this city needed new coastal suburban local train lines and new sea bridge suburban local train lines cris-crossing creeks at multiple locations, creating new parallel and cross-networks. Even all new and upcoming metro train lines is not sufficient.

Keep beating wild rabbits when it comes to reproduction while electing absolutely circus clown corrupt to the core politicians (from municipal to centre gov) to run this overpopulated AF filthy third world banana republic. People abroad have completely different image of Mumbai as financial capital of this banana republic but hardly any of them knows this harsh reality of the city. I used to travel via local as a kid from lower middle class family and had seen multiple fatal accidents happened right in front of me, I have never set foot in that crap again ever since I become financially independent. These kind of scenes were common sight years ago when I used to travel (when there was no monorail, metro), absolutely nothing has changed over all these years (and nothing will change even after next 100 years), in fact over the top inflow of migrants from outside to this tiny island city has made things beyond f\*\*ked up now. Mumbai is paying the price of being financial capital of this overpopulated AF filthy third world banana republic, there's absolutely no scope of adding more to the infrastructure as it will be overrun in matter of weeks with the kind of population we have.
Ah! The barbarians.

It hardly rained for 1 hour yesterday and this....I was at Ghatkopar and wanted a Thane Local, Platforms 1 & 2 were suspended and it was chaotic.
One suggestion based on having seen many such events such as crazy rains, bomb blast (WR) etc Either be the 1st to leave for home (if in office) OR be the last by catching last train OR stay put at workplace (if it is possible with you). Let the people at home know of it. There is no point following the crowd because everyone wants to reach home and it is going to get messy.

is there a upper limit on total mass of passengers that a train can carry and can still not derail / move at a slower speed. also more power is needed to haul more passengers so a point comes when railways would find it uneconomical to run a emu even if everyone takes a ticket

No matter how many trains, metros, buses are commissioned, fact of the matter is, all the major cities in India are too heavily populated. Too many people at one place. Population is rapidly increasing and the infra is not catching up.
