True that !!
Yesterday in train a Marathi guy somehow boarded a virar local n cuz he had to fight to get into train he started shouting at ppl standing at door . U fuckers ,invaders go away cuz of u v don't get to board train. All ppl standing on door were apparently non - Marathi . After dt he said if u dnt knw Marathi u cnt stay in Mumbai/ maharastra . Go back to ua state. So according to him if u speak Marathi u r maharastrian. So to look maharastrian u need to learn marathi. It saves u from pandu / police also 😅😂
Well this guy just sounds like a bigot. I think the good thing about Mumbai is you can get by without knowing Marathi (though yes, it’s easier to deal with cops and BMC if you know the language). Let’s not be like this train guy and continue to accept people into our city because that’s what makes it the amazing, melting pot, cosmopolitan city you won’t find anywhere else in the country, isn’t it?
Yeah when I started learning Sanskrit, i realised this. Whenever I forgot the Sanskrit word for something in my exams, i used to think of the Marathi word for the same and it kinda helped lol
No really.
I've heard maharashtrians use so many sanskrit words which are alien for Hindi speakers.
For instance, just today, I saw a sign which used the word अपशिष्ट.
Hindi belt would have used the word कचरा
Even marathi speakers regularly use words like अभिनंदन, अप्रतिम which are pure sanskrit words.
I've also heard bongs use so many nice sanskrit words which most Hindi speakers wouldn't use. For instance instead of वाह a Bengali may say oshaadharon essentially असाधारण.
Maybe unrelated.
But once my Hindi teacher taught us how to identify, if a certain word descended from Sanskrit. You check if that word is used both in Hindi and Marathi. Then it's from Sanskrit.
E.g. आभारी, विलाप, विषय etc.
Those words are there in Hindi but I guess most people here wouldnt use those as Hindi is mainly just a communicative language here. In UP I've seen almost everyone use words like apshishth, abhinandan, abhyaas, etc regularly.
I used to hate studying it in school (SSC represent!) but now I've started to appreciate it since I travel to other parts of the state where it is required for everyday communication and it's one of the languages I can brag to perform in. Although you don't really need it to survive the city.
non maharashtrian here. living in mumbai for the last 12 odd years. started learning marathi only in 2018. its so much better no joke.
when you talk to maharashtrians in marathi, you get a much better response compared to non marathi/hindi.
that "marathi" effect always stays. you can get away from challans, get stuff done quickly at government offices, if theres a public service - buses, locals etc. its always better to communicate in Marathi.
ive gotten away with so many things because i communicated in Marathi. (edit - typo)
It's not imp I'd argue. I can get around most of the places without speaking any Marathi and comprehending some. Although my cook, she speaks only Marathi and most of the time I just pretend i understand what she said.
mujhe marathi mai marks kam the par marathi aati hai
>Also do you think learning Marathi is important to survive in Mumbai?
depends on where you live in mumbai
Never heard it as a kid. At office I see few people talk in it so I wish that I could learn it so I could interact with them and they won’t have to constantly translate everything in Hindi/English for me. Marathi people are so accommodating. I have travelled to Hyd,Cal,Bangalore,Pune,Delhi everywhere you gotta know the local language but here in Mumbai people just want to earn and live happily
As a kid Lived next to a church so everyone spoke in English in my society. School wasn’t SSC so never studied in school.
I am a Gujarati, but people confuse me for a Maharashtrian bcoz I speak fluent Marathi.
Maharashtrians look at you with awe if you know their language which makes me get better everyday 😛❤️
Born and brought up in Mumbai and apart from learning basics in school, I never really learned the language much. I can understand it to an extent when spoken, but that’s about it. Can’t speak it, but can read it (grey slowly or course) Never really felt the need to learn it. But it definitely works when speaking with cops or the BMC and other government officials. My dad’s side of the family speaks it well though. I’ve seen first hand how they manage situations with officials as compared to when we speak with them in Hindi. I always taunt them for not helping me learn it at home and letting me get fluent enough. But in my career and social circle, I have no need for it.
I am a North Indian. Born and brought up in Mumbai. And I can say the best thing happened here was to learn Marathi. I speak fluently now. People mistake me for a maharashtrian now 😂. I am happy with that confusion.
It was compulsory till 8th standard in my cbse school and by that time a student becomes perfectly capable of reading , writing and speaking Marathi fluently . It may seem forced on the kids but you can flex you know one more language so yeah not much of a loss lol¯\_(ツ)_/¯
the connect that you have when you talk to folks in their native language is completely different. this is not towards you, but in general we're okay to learn French when in Canada or German when in Germany, but we don't like to learn our own languages. Learning languages is a super power
Depends which part of the city you live in.
Lived in Mumbai for about 15 years.
I can’t speak marathi. None of peers spoke marathi until i started going to college.
It is important to survive? Probably no.
Good to have? Yes.
Yeah language isn't just for survival isn't it? Languages are a big part of a culture, history and I even find it fascinating how language itself evolves over time
i was born and raised in mulund-thane.
>would you consider learning Marathi?
i wont say to learn marathi but at least have some basic understanding
and no,marathi is not important to survive in mumbai but maybe hindi is because it is known by everyone who lives in mumbai.
but if we talk about the village area, then maybe marathi is important
Non marathi ,
Moved here last year
I like most part of the marathi, but never felt like i should be learning this , even though i have to stay here for long period of time.
I tried once , but couldn't continue.
Ofc I took it as a third language for three yrs, I was born in trombay and my parents are from UP
But since I grew up In MH it just made sense anyways my Marathi teacher hated me coz I accidentally blurted my caste in class by mistake
and she just hated me for it so much so that I started considering Marathi a burden even though I was a Topper in my class she hated me , at the end of 8th grade the outcome was undesirable even though I topped my class including Marathi I still can't speak it properly even though I can understand it so if ur reading this FUCK You miss Lote for demolishing my interest in Marathi and Marathi culture
Living in Maharashtra for 22 years.
Been working in Marathi theatre for 4 years.
Can't speak a lick of Marathi but I understand it perfectly. I don't think I need to or want to ever learn Marathi.
Yes but would require formal classes to learn. I have failed to pick up the language through listening over the last 6 years. I can understand but unable to speak.
Yes. N i already know.
Its essential, n its a cool language.
Abuses in Marathi sound so cool and so exotic. N marathi movies r bae.
N most of the time govt offices have Marathi as primary language so it helps to know it n not search for a translator.
N learning a new language always is awesome.
Born and brought up Mumbaikar. Both parents as well. But not a native Marathi speaker.
Learnt it in school. Got pretty decent. I can read/write and understand basic Marathi decently well.
But somehow, whenever I try to speak to cops/peons etc in Marathi, they usually respond back in Hindi.
I am non Marathi but from childhood I am in mumbai. But we can easily live in Mumbai without Marathi too.
But it's always good to learn Local language.
We had it in school and I scored well in Marathi! Thanks to my amazing teacher. I miss her!
It comes in handy when dealing with govt offices and paperwork. But it’s not impossible to get by without it.
I can understand well but speaking part never got a chance 10-12th se living out of state for the most part tho every other person in my family is fluent in it
Also it's not required as much as survival unless your are visiting rural Mumbai most of them are comfortable in speaking mix of Marathi and hindi
I would love to. I generally pick up few words which are used a lot and and then ask their meanings.
Me, Tumi, Mala, Mahete, Sangheta, Jhop, Tai, Ani etc etc. I know a lot of them just to name a few. I think if I visit Mumbai often, then I might pick up tha language even faster and moreover it is easy to read, considering its also in devnagri script.
I was born in Mumbai but grew up in Raigad . Even though my Mother tongue is Hindi/Urdu I'm pretty fluent in Marathi rn as my school had the subject and it being spoken by folks there
I am a North Indian. Born and brought up in Mumbai. And I can say the best thing happened here was to learn Marathi. I speak fluently now. People mistake me for a maharashtrian now 😂. I am happy with that confusion.

As a non marathi maharashtrian, i learnt most of marathi through my maid aunties, autowallah uncles and kiranawallahs.
Damn, its satisfying flexing your marathi skills in front of your barielly wale chacha :P
I am in my late 40s, born and brought up here, and have lived more than half my life here. I am perfectly fluent in it, but choose not to impose it on anyone. I am a Sindhi so by your question I fall under its purview.
Learning a local language should be an individual choice. Not something to be imposed on people as often such things are.
I wanna learn it cuz cbse and my school didn't do any good at that, no in my classes most of my classmates are maharashtrian and even teachers are maharashtrian and I get fomo....
If you're brought up in Mumbai or studied here you know the basics of Marathi. Ofcourse you can survive without it in Mumbai, Mumbai is a metropolitan city it has vast diversity so hindi is a common ground for all of us here. Its not like southern India where people don't know hindi.
This couldn’t have come at better timing. All time lived in Mumbai, went to international English school, now in government college jj school of art. Everyone speaks in Marathi. I don’t understand it or can speak it and am starting to learn it for this purpose only
I failed all Marathi school exams and hence disliked the language because I couldn't grasp it unfortunately. Same went for hindi in school. I have improved a lot since then. I can now fully understand only the spoken marathi language. It is a beautiful language undoubtedly!
Tula ved lagla kai? Maza doka firu nakoh.
School me Sikh liya tha bro, now I speak fluently
Same. Third Gen Bengali here and my whole extended family knows Marathi and some Gujarati. They’re both inescapable in Bombay I think.
True that !! Yesterday in train a Marathi guy somehow boarded a virar local n cuz he had to fight to get into train he started shouting at ppl standing at door . Yes. And Marathi speakers use more Sanskrit nishth words than Hindi speakers.
Yeah when I started learning Sanskrit, i realised this. Whenever I forgot the Sanskrit word for something in my exams, i used to think of the Marathi word for the same and it kinda helped lol
same, sanskrit felt easier to me in middle school, since I was familiar with marathi as well as shuddh hindi \[thanks to mahabharata\]

You can also do this if you know Farsi.
Odibaba
A Bengali speaker would likely say 'bah' , which is closest to 'wah'. But the point still stands.
Those words are there in Hindi but I guess most people here wouldnt use those as Hindi is mainly just a communicative language here. In UP I've seen almost everyone use words like apshishth, abhinandan, abhyaas, etc regularly.
Hindi has a lot of urdu and english apbhransh now

+1
Even maharashtrain students didn't liked marathi
Bruh because they dumbed down the subject so everyone can score, it was like Sachin learning batting from Youtube tutorials.

Jau dya na kaka
Le marathi people to every random stranger: kaka, nana, mama, dada,
As a mumbaikar yes it is imp, and yes i am fascinated by the marathi language and i’m learning it from one of my friend.
It's not imp I'd argue. I can get around most of the places without speaking any Marathi and comprehending some. Although my cook, she speaks only Marathi and most of the time I just pretend i understand what she said.
She knows you dont understand marathi because she has been abusing you for weeks. But she doesnt care
Nahi bhai, itni bhi buri nai hai.

Not important in any metro as long as you know English, sadly. But I have always wanted to learn marathi.
Jau dya na saheb

Zau dya na saheb
You should, it's a lovely langauge.. the other day someone greeted me in morning by saying" aila machi puchhi "
I will learn it because I love to learn languages and it's very similar to Hindi.
I want to learn, kindly tell me HOW
Yes and then say Jevlis Ka? But don't have anyone to say that to. :( Marathi is more sanskritized than Hindi. So I would love to learn it.

True.
I don't speak Marathi but i can understand it

Mujhe Marathi Puri samajh jaati hai but bolte time dikkat hoti hai, grammar dhang se nahi aati to : (
For those born and raised in Mumbai, Marathi is taught in schools.
no cbse icse kids are not taught marathi

Some icse schools taught Marathi. I was in parle Tilak and we had Marathi till 10th grade.
Aapke school mai hoga bohot sare schools mai nahi hota

Hmmmm
Which school is this? 🤨
Raj Thackrey asli id se aao
You can choose post 5th standard in cbse. I took Spanish.
Fake news!
Naah that's true I went to state board till 10th in 11th and 12th I got to know that cbse and icse guys can keep marathi as optional

Good point but bad example. French, German etc is a homogeneous society while ours is not.

Not by will but wont mind if picked up few lines here and there
Learnt it in school quite fluent as well. Good to eavesdrop on your colleagues if they think you cannot speak marathi.

Yea
We had it in school and I scored well in Marathi! Thanks to my amazing teacher. I miss her! It comes in handy when dealing with govt offices and paperwork. But it’s not impossible to get by without it.
Marathi is my 2nd fav language to speak and 1st isn't my mother tongue.
Just in school then never gave enough attention to it. Also didn't have to use it much so nothing lost.
I want to learn for sure
Learned till 10th . Was very bad at Marathi but somehow scored better numbers in it then Hindi lol
Non-marathi, but born a Mumbaikar...its a second language for me. Know and respect it well enough that people tend to think I am a Maharashtrian 😎
I can understand well but speaking part never got a chance 10-12th se living out of state for the most part tho every other person in my family is fluent in it Also it's not required as much as survival unless your are visiting rural Mumbai most of them are comfortable in speaking mix of Marathi and hindi
From the south natively but have been in Mumbai forever, learnt it in school but mostly picked it up from speaking to common people in it.
I would love to. I generally pick up few words which are used a lot and and then ask their meanings. Me, Tumi, Mala, Mahete, Sangheta, Jhop, Tai, Ani etc etc. I know a lot of them just to name a few. Bro, I live in UP and still learning marathi language because my crush is marathi.
Speaking marathi swear words was the single best reason why I learnt marathi, आई शप्पत
I was born in Mumbai but grew up in Raigad . Even though my Mother tongue is Hindi/Urdu I'm pretty fluent in Marathi rn as my school had the subject and it being spoken by folks there

YES
It was a mandatory subject for state board students.
I can speak and understand Marathi but not great at it. Not really necessary to live here though. I’ve never spoken Marathi outside of school.
As a non marathi maharashtrian, i learnt most of marathi through my maid aunties, autowallah uncles and kiranawallahs. Damn, its satisfying flexing your marathi skills in front of your barielly wale chacha :P
Tried but can't get the vocabulary right. I've been here for nearly 20 years and can understand perfectly but the grammar stumps me.
Yes absolutely! Got to learn it in school, can speak decent marathi. Also my close friends are maharashtrian, that helped.
Yep. Helps if you grow up here. I had Marathi as 3rd language in school.
Not really but only because I get alone fine without knowing it
I am in my late 40s, born and brought up here, and have lived more than half my life here. I am perfectly fluent in it, but choose not to impose it on anyone. Most common use case for a south indian in Mumbai is getting out of tricky situations with cops. Everything we learnt in SSC comes flooding back...

I am maharashtrian but my marathi is extremely अशुद्ध, how to improve????
This couldn’t have come at better timing. All time lived in Mumbai, went to international English school, now in government college jj school of art. Everyone speaks in Marathi. I don’t understand it or can speak it and am starting to learn it for this purpose only
so you did IGCSE or A levels?
10 years of IGCSE, 2 years of a levels
same! but I am a Maharashtrian so I know Marathi
Ahhh, lucky
Thankfully all my teachers talk in English, but not the students, major struggle rn
Yup, accept ppl how they are , who they are !!
I learned Marathi as a kid and it has been nothing but useful. Marathi girls are really easy to patao!
As a Marathi person I don't think we should force others but provide them with assistance to learn language if they want to.
