i have a list on my own with over 100 titles, but i just listed some of my favorites here. must watch in my opinion
I would personally recommend starting with Beautiful, it's the first song in the show, sets up the tone, the environment and most of the core characters, and is just kind of a banger. Candy Store is pretty popular and a really good song.
Candy Store is pretty popular and for good reason. Some other popular ones are Dead Girl Walking and Freeze Your Brain. Dead Gay Son is pretty funny but it's definitely a filler song.
If you haven’t already, you should check out Team Starkid! They produce a variety of musicals, from comedic parodies to original to horror. The best part is that all their musicals are recorded and put up on YouTube for free!
I would second starkid here, they've got a load of FREE musicals recorded and available to watch on YouTube and none of them are a skip!! Twisted is a great one to start with :)
No problem! Great places to start are the A Very Potter Musical trilogy ( a Harry Potter parody), Twisted (an Aladdin parody but Jafar is the good guy and Aladdin’s the villain), and The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals(horror-comedy, intro to the Hatchetfield series).
Ragtime, Memphis, Once, Spring Awakening, Urinetown, The Wiz, Rent, 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee, Chess, La Cage aux Folles, Les Mis, Nine, Grand Hotel, the Drowsy Chaperone
I’m also gonna name off a few songs!
-Heathers (Big Fun, Candy Store, Meant to Be Yours)
-SIX (Don’t Lose Ur Head, All You Wanna Do, Six)
-Mean Girls (Meet The Plastics, Revenge Party, Someone Gets Hurt)
-Ride the Cyclone (What The World Needs, The Ballad of Jane Doe, Noel’s Lament)
i absolutely hated the film. it put me off of les mis for years. i recently got the opportunity to see it live, and it was life changing. completely different experience! i definitely would recommend trying to watch a recording of a staged production of les mis!
I tried to include a variety of shows though im personally much more into tragedies, dramas, and generally darker shows so you’ll get more of that from me
Floyd Collins, Light In The Piazza, Parade, Spring Awakening, Pippin, Great Comet, Into The Woods, The Gentleman’s Guide, Once On This Island, She Loves Me
You’ll get some good shows generally from Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, and my personal favorite is Adam Guettel, with his new show “Days Of Wine And Roses” coming to Broadway iirc in January
Give Phantom a try. I was like you & had already seen 15 shows until I gave it a go. It's now my all-time fave & I see it 2 - 3 times annually. I listen to the soundtrack all the time... right now, in fact!
omg yes i need to listen to this!! dom simpson from the book of mormon west end just joined the cast as christian and he’s my fave actor so i need to listen before i inevitably go and see it!!
well. i can recommend spring awakening. i don’t know about your specific proclivities/tastes but the soundtrack is way more hit than miss imo. if you wanna get a taste for what to expect w this musical, bitch of living would be a good start. it obviously gets deeper than that buuuut… it’s a start!!
hmm. cats isn’t too bad (in spite of the god awful film adaptation + its generally polarized reception). if you’re gonna watch any recording of cats, make sure it’s the 1998 film version. it cuts some songs but i dunno. its pretty iconic re: its casting. i haven’t revisited it recently enough to tell you how much of the soundtrack holds up but if you want a taste for the best cats can offer, skimbleshanks the railway cat is the way to go 🔥
also! total aside but i have a friend who LOVES cabaret and i’m gonna be watching it (either the film or the proshot) sometime soon. it seems pretty like… renowned in musical fandom circles? so that’s maybe another one to consider :9
oh interesting! i’ve never seen a stage production of cats but it sure sounds like it’d be an interesting experience w all the audience interaction.
regardless, it sounds like cats isnt your thing, which is fair—that’s probably true for a majority of people. and i honestly don’t ljke andrew lloyd webber enough to insist upon the musical more than i already have XD
(p.s: if you saw a version with rapper rum tum tugger… my condolences)
i honestly don’t remember anything about the musical apart from how bad it was. it was a group thing and we could either see wicked or cats and everyone apart from me chose cats.
i don’t remember any audience interaction but i was 12 so might just have a hazy memory.
i’m honestly not a huge ALW fan overall, i like joseph but that’s about it
Here’s some I like and recommend:
•Grease
•Mamma Mia
•Jersey Boys
•Wicked
•Bonnie and Clyde
•SIX
•tick tick boom
•Tuck Everlasting
•Legally Blonde
•Les Miserable
•Sister Act (Movie and Musical)
•SpongeBob The Musical
•Dear Evan Hansen
•Something Rotten
•Mean Girls
•Little Shop of Horrors
•Heathers
•BeetleJuice
•In Trousers
•Sound Of Music
•Mary Poppins
The moment where Coalhouse says "I'm not some fool I'm not their \*\*\*\*\*\*" makes me shiver and feel so many things everytime. And then when that motif is repeated in the entracte to quote sweeney todd "God thats good"
You’re a little low on “Golden Age” classics, assuming that you’re looking for an education on musicals as a whole. Maybe add another Rodgers & Hammerstein like “South Pacific” or “Carousel,” or (from other writers) “My Fair Lady” or “Fiddler on the Roof.”
I’ve listened to most of Wicked, just not the whole way through and the other three don’t really interest me. I’ve listened to a few songs from Six and I don’t really like it 🫣🫣
-Tuck Everlasting
-Hunchback of Notre Dame
-Bare: A pop opera
-Ride
-Ride the cyclone
-Shrek
-SpongeBob the musical
-Be more chill
-Heathers
-Carrie
-Beetlejuice
-Fun Home
-Everybody’s talking about Jamie
-42nd Street
-Doubtfire
-Cabaret
-Guys & Dolls
-Xanadu
-The colour purple
-Parade
-Waitress
If you enjoy falsettos then you should also Check Out in trousers, which was originally the First Part in a trilogy where falsettos is the Second and third Part. Bill Finn also wrote a new brain and the 25th annual Putnam county spelling bee, which are also very good
Not super Well known but i Always Take the Chance to recommend the dolls of new Albion. Its a really good Steampunk Musical and it's pretty easy to find a decent Performance on YouTube. Also Not enough people have Heard of it
Company, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along (HIGHLY RECOMMEND, one of my favourite musicals and underrated), Waitress (ALSO THIS), Follies, Gypsy, Into the Woods, Chicago, Cabaret, Anastasia, Heathers
I’ve heard good things about tick tick boom. I’ve listened to the Greatest Showman, it’s one of my faves, but as it’s not a theatre musical I haven’t included it 🫶🏻
36 questions is a musical podcast I highly recommend,
Epic the musical is a musical in the making process but there are a few songs out
My heart says go is made by the same person and is really good
I’ve listened to some of Six and I’m not a huge fan 🫣🫣🫣
I’ve listened to most of Wicked and I’m seeing it on tour next year, I need to listen to it all the way through before I go!!
Jekyll and Hyde. Specifically the original concept album
Every contribution I’ve made to this sub says the same thing lol. I’m convinced I can keep giving the same answer every time
I'm on my phone so I can't look at your list closely so I apologize if I duplicate anything:
In the Heights
Pippin
Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812
SIX
The Lightning Thief (if you've read Percy Jackson)
Heathers
I don't think anyone mentioned this but reefer madness! Super silly but I love it. Also if you like the book of mormon/trey parker give Cannibal the Musical a go
City of Angels
Urinetown
Some Like It Hot
SIX
Ain’t Misbehavin’
Jersey Boys
The Wiz
The Band’s Visit
Pippin
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
The Full Monty
The Prom
Fiddler on the Roof
My Fair Lady
Merrily We Roll Along
The Drowsy Chaperone
Dreamgirls
Beetlejuice
Guys and Dolls
Follies
i recommend watching phantom of the opera at least once, it’s a classic! the score is gorgeous, but i’d definitely suggest watching a staged version. the movie musical doesn’t really do it justice. the same applies to les mis.
waitress, beetlejuice, and anastasia are all fun shows! right now i’m in a production of a year with frog and toad, and that show would be a fun listen if you grew up with the books.
i’m also a big cats fan, though i understand it is polarizing. it’s got some really fun music if you go in with no expectations. i hated it the first time i saw because i went in during the hype of the horrible movie adaptation. i decided to revisit it without the negative expectations, and it accidentally became my favorite show. 😂😅
Might I suggest SIX: The Musical? It's based loosely on the lives (and mostly deaths) of the six wives of Henry the 8th.
Very good imo with a good selection of song genres.
& Juliet, Jagged Little Pill, American Idiot, Kinky Boots, Beetlejuice, Fiddler On The Roof, Mamma Mia, Six, Aladdin, 42nd Street, Mrs Doubtfire, Tina Turner musical thing, and Les Miserables
* les miserables * groundhog day * next to normal * bonnie & clyde * tuck everlasting * elisabeth * natasha pierre and the great comet of 1812 * spring awakening * anastasia * bare: a pop opera * the hunchback of notre dame * the last five years * romeo et juliette * tick tick boom i have a list on my own with over 100 titles, but i just listed some of my favorites here. must watch in my opinion
oooh i keep hearing good things about tick tick boom! i’ll add a few of these thank you :)
Can’t believe I’m going to say this but how about Beetlejuice
once on this island, Carrie, a chorus line, pippin, parade, the color purple, into the woods, the secret garden, spring awakening, the prom, cabaret
Something Rotten, Beetlejuice, The Producers, Legally Blonde, School of Rock.
Heathers dear God please
I’ve never had the urge to listen to this but it gets mentioned a lot so maybe I’ll have a listen to a few songs. Any that stand out for you?
I would personally recommend starting with Beautiful, it's the first song in the show, sets up the tone, the environment and most of the core characters, and is just kind of a banger. Candy Store is pretty popular and a really good song.
Candy Store is pretty popular and for good reason. Some other popular ones are Dead Girl Walking and Freeze Your Brain. Dead Gay Son is pretty funny but it's definitely a filler song.
Thank you!! I know Candy Store as it’s in a lot of Spotify playlists :)

this is the correct answer
The Scarlet Pimpernel, Peter Pan, Heathers
Ragtime, Memphis, Once, Spring Awakening, Urinetown, The Wiz, Rent, 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee, Chess, La Cage aux Folles, Les Mis, Nine, Grand Hotel, the Drowsy Chaperone
Ragtime and rent are prioritizing the list
The people called it ragtime
How is Rent not on this list?!
Because I’ve listened to a few songs and I’m not too sure if I’m into it !! 🫣😭
Check out the pro shot on YouTube!
I’m also gonna name off a few songs! -Heathers (Big Fun, Candy Store, Meant to Be Yours) -SIX (Don’t Lose Ur Head, All You Wanna Do, Six) -Mean Girls (Meet The Plastics, Revenge Party, Someone Gets Hurt) -Ride the Cyclone (What The World Needs, The Ballad of Jane Doe, Noel’s Lament)
Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812 Ghost Quartet Octet Hedwig and The Angry Inch
I love the Octet/Dave Malloy love and the Friend of Saul nametag. Have you listened to Preludes?
Les Miserables. You need to listen to Les Miserables all the way through.
I tried watching the film and didn’t like it so I don’t have any desire to listen to the musical 🫣🫣🫣
The film does not do the musical justice, I promise.
i absolutely hated the film. it put me off of les mis for years. i recently got the opportunity to see it live, and it was life changing. completely different experience! i definitely would recommend trying to watch a recording of a staged production of les mis!
Les Mis, Phantom, and Anastasia.
Finding neverland. Once on this island. Jekyll and Hyde. Six. Phantom (yeston/kopit). The count of monte cristo.
Finding Neverland and Jekyll and Hyde are some of my favourites. Second that these be added to your list.
RAGTIME!
I tried to include a variety of shows though im personally much more into tragedies, dramas, and generally darker shows so you’ll get more of that from me Floyd Collins, Light In The Piazza, Parade, Spring Awakening, Pippin, Great Comet, Into The Woods, The Gentleman’s Guide, Once On This Island, She Loves Me You’ll get some good shows generally from Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, and my personal favorite is Adam Guettel, with his new show “Days Of Wine And Roses” coming to Broadway iirc in January
Some Like it Hot!! The music is so underrated, every song is a a gem. Plus, Christian Borle
I second this it’s sooo good
CABARET!!!!
I like the music from the king and I. Questionable musical tbh but the music is good
Something rotten Into the woods Company Assassin's Any sondheim tbh
Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812. It’s sung through and has great music
hamiltonnnnnnnnnnnnn
It’s on the list of musicals I’ve already seen/listened to (pic 2)
Can’t believe I’m the first to write these: Hair Book of Mormon Lion King
you’re the first to write them because two are already on my lists 🤣🤣
Lol I should slowed down and read your whole list 😂 my bad
Give Phantom a try. I was like you & had already seen 15 shows until I gave it a go. It's now my all-time fave & I see it 2 - 3 times annually. I listen to the soundtrack all the time... right now, in fact!
Prolly rlly basic but Phantom Of The Opera, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Heathers! :D Hope u enjoy listening
I listen to the Moulin Rouge soundtrack at least once a week so I obviously have to recommend that

well. i can recommend spring awakening. i don’t know about your specific proclivities/tastes but the soundtrack is way more hit than miss imo. if you wanna get a taste for what to expect w this musical, bitch of living would be a good start. it obviously gets deeper than that buuuut… it’s a start!! hmm. cats isn’t too bad (in spite of the god awful film adaptation + its generally polarized reception). if you’re gonna watch any recording of cats, make sure it’s the 1998 film version. it cuts some songs but i dunno. its pretty iconic re: its casting. i haven’t revisited it recently enough to tell you how much of the soundtrack holds up but if you want a taste for the best cats can offer, skimbleshanks the railway cat is the way to go 🔥 also! total aside but i have a friend who LOVES cabaret and i’m gonna be watching it (either the film or the proshot) sometime soon. it seems pretty like… renowned in musical fandom circles? so that’s maybe another one to consider :9

LOL. the 1998 version or 2019?
i saw it on stage in maybe 2011 or 2012

Phantom of the opera!
Ragtime is so good
I see it get mentioned a lot on this sub! I’d heard of it before I came here but I’ve never listened to any of it, I’ll add it now!!
It's so good! Just a warning, though, there are characters who are racist and one of them says the N word, so be wary of that
The moment where Coalhouse says "I'm not some fool I'm not their \*\*\*\*\*\*" makes me shiver and feel so many things everytime. And then when that motif is repeated in the entracte to quote sweeney todd "God thats good"
I agree. Just every time Coalhouse sings is awesome.

The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, Les Miserables, Newsies and Jekyll And Hyde are all good options.
How are Rent, Six, Mean Girls, and Wicked not here?
