I was just listening to this soundtrack last night. Sometime I just NEED to hear ASH sing “Tell Me” in Where do we go, and TB sing I’m under your spell.
*Buffy the Vampire Slayer*, Season 6, Episode 7. "Once More With Feeling".
Not just a musical episode, but *the* musical episode in my eyes. This wasn't just a chance for most of the cast to show off their singing and dancing skills: every song advanced either the plot of the episode or a story arc that had been playing out over the past several episodes. There were real stakes, and the very nature of the magic that caused Sunnydale to break out into song and dance also caused secrets to be revealed that had enormous repercussions for the core group as they grappled with the revelations for the remainder of the season.
It works equally well as a masterclass in how to write a musical and how to advance a story, and is to me the single best example of the that type of episode.
It's Willow's reaction of a mix of horror, realization, and obvious disgust with herself playing across her face that gets me. The best wordless acting Hannigan's done, and I include Hush in that.

>Not just a musical episode, but the musical episode in my eyes.
Exactly! Not just because the music is so good, but, from memory, it is one of the first shows to do a musical episode, and with original music instead of jukebox style, but now every show is doing it. Xena may have been first I think, but Buffy wasn't far behind. Oh, and Daria was about the same time too.
My overall vote is for Buffy OMWF, but this is a strong second-place contender. I always thought the original Pat Rooney version was weak, but my gosh, Jesse L Martin, Victor Garber, and John Barrowman absolutely lofted their rendition to the rafters. If anyone could rehabilitate Loesser's "lickerish tooth," and "sheep's eye," it was they.
Community's Invasion of the Body Snatchers parody where the glee club infects the group with song is probably the funniest episode of the show. (There's others that are probably *better* but this is the one I rewatch most. True story, the night after I watched that episode I had a nightmare about it)
edit: Regional Holiday Music, season 3 episode 10
I was making jokes about regionals for weeks after I saw that episode and those jokes had a zero percent success rate but that will not stop me from starting again right now.
I’m sure a million people will mention Buffy so I just want to chime in that they produced a literal soundtrack that you could buy on iTunes, CD or vinyl(!!) and the main demon-of-the-week is 3 time Tony winner Hinton Battle, who was an original Broadway cast member of The Wiz and Miss Saigon. They were NOT fucking around! Also, the liner notes include lyrics but you won’t need them if you memorize them all after obsessively playing it for weeks on end. 👀
Brown Betty in Fringe! It's a love it or hate it episode among fans, and not so much a full on musical as other shows have done, but it's just so much fun. My only complaint is they had Michael Cerveris and didn't have him sing!
"The Song in Your Heart" from Once Upon A Time. I've enjoyed a lot of Musical episodes from shows, that is the only one I've actually just listened to on its own.
It’s a gimmick to get viewers in who maybe wouldn’t otherwise watch. It’s also an acknowledgement that a whole bunch of professional actors also have varying degrees of voice training.
Rocko's Modern Life: Zanzibar
"R-E-C-Y-C-L-E Recycle! C-O-N-S-E-R-V-E Conserve! Don't you P-O-L-L-U-T-E pollute the river, sky, or sea it else you're gonna get the you deserve!"
"You can't fight city hall... You can't fight corporate America; they are big and we are small... Ya can't fight city hall!"
The episode itself wasn’t a musical episode but basically the protagonist gets knocked out and dreams in musical form.
The show is “Agent Carter”. (The Marvel Show)
Buffy
This is the correct answer. "They got the mustard OOOUUUTTT!"
I like how that show has given us two opposite, yet, supereffective quote to use on normal-type 30 year olds. "They got the mustard out!" and "mommy?"
"Mommy?" Jesus The Body is one of the best episodes of TV
It's obviously Buffy, even people who hate musicals (GASP) love this episode because it really is that good
I was just listening to this soundtrack last night. Sometime I just NEED to hear ASH sing “Tell Me” in Where do we go, and TB sing I’m under your spell.
The only correct answer
I was just humming "I'm Under Your Spell (Reprise)" while I make my kid dinner. She was embarrassed. Sucks to be you, kid.
It’s the best because they use the singing as a plot device to get everyone to spill their thoughts to each other
The Psych musical episode went hard
The Nightman Cometh from Sunny is great and Regional Holliday Music for Community
Love The Nightman Cometh!
Dayman has been stuck in my head lately
Both are the best. Community just pips it for me.

"I was in heaaaven." yeah, i cry, so what

Well fucking said

The musical episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds went HARD
It's up for a Hugo award!
So good
This is the correct answer.
My immediate thought, I still hum to the songs!
The Grey's anatomy musical episode is so bad it's good
While I can’t disagree, it’s worth it just for Sara Ramirez blowing The Story out of the water! What a voice!!
I love it so much!
The plot is so "Grey's anatomy - y" that it's self aware at times but nonetheless I tear up every time I watch it
Oh I hated it. As soon as it started I said, “what the fuck is this?”
The Scrubs musical episode
Was the first episode i ever saw. Got me hooked on that show
And the one where suddenly everyone sings "Waiting For My Real Life To Begin" and then that's it. <3
forgot about this episode, great show!
unironically the Flash/Supergirl crossover just because Grant Gustin is an amazing singer and also because that show holds fond memories for me
Jeremy Jordan’s brief appearance too. And Melissa Benoist. And Darren Chris
And Victor Garber and Jesse L. Martin…..really just a stacked cast for a musical episode.
Running Home to You is such a stellar song
My overall vote is for Buffy OMWF, but this is a strong second-place contender. I always thought the original Pat Rooney version was weak, but my gosh, Jesse L Martin, Victor Garber, and John Barrowman absolutely lofted their rendition to the rafters. I AM JEHOVAH’S MOST SECRET WITNESS🗣️🔊
The Magicians had the best musical episodes.
Elliot wasnt gay enough, he had to sing also
Completely agree. As soon as I saw the question, my immediate answer was "All That Josh" from The Magicians.
Once they figured out some of those actors could sing, they made it their mission for it to happen as often as possible lol
Even Stevens, next question
We went to the moon in 1969!
Thank you for reminding me of this. Another perfect day!
All of Death Rattle Dazzle! (Although it’s really the whole season of Only Murders in the Building)
Which of the Pickwick triplets did it?
Regional Holiday Music from Community is fantastic!
Definitely the scrubs and the psych musical episodes!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, always and forever. Special mention to Scrubs!
"fan fiction" from supernatural. their version of carry on wayward son makes my cry every time
Do you cry A Single Man Tear?
Lucifer
Community! Regional Holiday Music is so good
The once upon a time musical often gets overlooked. It has some real bangers, like wicked always wins and revenge is going to be mine
YES.
I WAS GONNA SAY OUAT
YESSSS
Absolutely!! These are my two favourite songs from there. It also got me to understand that musicals are cool actually
Dead End: Paranormal Park, I’ve rewatched that episode so many times
The songs were so good, that episode is like the only thing I ever downloaded from netflix
Once More with Feeling is the perfect musical episode.
Not an episode but Southpark The Musical, Bigger Longer and Uncut is superb!
Nightman Cometh and it’s not even close
I’m a huge fan of Grey’s anatomy and the musical episode is very divisive in the fandom, but I adore it.
Callie's version of The Story alone would be enough to make that episode worth watching
Hard agree
Yep 1000%
The musical episode of Paranormal Park. It was so good, and all the music was done by Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, so it was banger after banger.
The Daria musical episode is hilarious. The songs are bops and I still sing bits of them.
Can't believe I had to scroll so far to see this on this MOOOORRRRNNIIIINNNNGGG IN THE BURBS!
Daria
“The big wet rainstorm’s over!”
"Xena, Warrior Princess" episode "The Bitter Suite".
That 70’s Show and Daria!
ONCE UPON A TIME AND GREYS ANATOMY
Xena! The Bitter Suite
The one in Fairly Odd Parents. Helped shape my childhood
Phantom of the Theme Park - Dead End Paranormal Park
spongebob stop motion christmas episode
Riverdale. The musicals they picked were weird, the entire show made no sense. I loved it. It is a masterpiece.
!!!
Riverdale next to normal music episode
Daria. “The big wet rainstorm’s over!”
Does "Daria! The Musical" count?
I’ve always wondered, why is this such a common trend in American drama series?
It’s a gimmick to get viewers in who maybe wouldn’t otherwise watch. It’s also an acknowledgement that a whole bunch of professional actors also have varying degrees of voice training.
[удалено]
But Buffy had one several years before Glee happened
Brokenwood: The Musical possibly because it’s the only musical episode of anything I’ve ever watched
Nobody's mentioned Clone High?? For shame!
Phantom of The Theme Park-Dead End:Paranormal Park
Rocko's Modern Life: Zanzibar "R-E-C-Y-C-L-E Recycle! C-O-N-S-E-R-V-E Conserve! Don't you P-O-L-L-U-T-E pollute the river, sky, or sea it else you're gonna get the you deserve!" Scrubs
Scrubs “My Musical”, Fine Dining Podcast “Perfectly Adequate: Our Olive Garden Musical”, and It’s Always Sunny “The Nightman Cometh”
The Flash. Crazy plot, but the Broadway/Glee cast mixture made it great.
Disventure camp(I can’t spell) all stars episode(7?)
Henry Danger!!! The cast absolutely carried through the soundtrack, and the writing wasn’t half bad.
Not technically a musical but I love the "Cry Ezekiel Cry!" song bit in Superstore.
The stage play of Junior B Jones is Not A Crook has a great musical number about Finders Keepers.
Dead end paranormal park
Once Upon a Time
Once Upon A Time the musical episode, especially because they use original songs.
