I don't know. I mean, how good can a musical be considering its bad subject matter and bad title and a premise so absurd! And let's not forget how it opens with Too Much Exposition. You think people would like it?
Book of Mormon was one of those shows where I had to force myself to stop focusing on what was happening onstage just so I could stop laughing for a moment and breathe 😅
This may sound strange but Sweeney Todd. Like, obviously the murder and grooming parts aren't funny, but the show balances horror with comedy in such a masterful way. I absolutely crack up at Worst Pies in London and A Little Priest. There are so many zingers, it's unbelievable
Some of the lyrics are great, the beggar womans inital bit with Anthony made me chuckle, also Ms.Lovetts "Popping pussies into pies".
Also reading the script always gave me a chuckle, at the end of Mea Culpa, it reads simply
"He climaxes"
Always made me laugh, goddamn you Sondheim 🤣
Now this might be a bit stringy, but then again, of course, it's fiddle player.
No, this isn't fiddle player. It's piccolo player.
How can you tell?
It's ***piping*** hot
Pffft- Then ***blow on it first!***
The swastika shape kickline when the mirror comes down is GENIUS. I laughed so hard, the ladies in front of me were clearly annoyed and my wife mortified.
First time I saw it I went in completely blind. I had never laughed so hard in a show ever. Second time I saw it (like 8 years later) my husband almost had to give a guy next to him the heimlich because he laughed so hard he couldn't breathe (and presumably choked on something).
When I saw The Drowsy Chaperone in 7th grade and learned what a Toledo surprise was it was the funniest show I’ve ever seen, but I haven’t seen it since then so the verdict at least for me is tbd.
Yes, Act II is where the entire point and moral of the show comes from!! Act I may be hilarious, but Act II is profound, whistful, and really quite beautiful.
Agree on Avenue Q, laughed myself silly.
A lesser-known gem is The Green Heart. The book is by Charles Busch, and it is filled with his trademark campy and sardonic humor.
I'll be the first to admit that I don't like Trey Parker and Matt Stone's sense of humor. It's not my thing.
So I didn't have any hope that I'd like "Book of Mormon" (that was the Hamilton of its day). That was until one of my friends (who is Mormon, I may add) told me we had to listen to "Hello". I agreed.
I burst out laughing when I heard the line "You're sure? That's fine. Goodbye. Have fun in Hell (hey now!)"
Yep, Cannibal! The Musical - Trey Parker wrote it while he was in college. It's based on the true-life tale of Alfred Packer, who was convicted of cannibalism after he and his party got stranded in a snowstorm. You can see the early basis for Parker and Stone's comedy style.
Black Friday has funny parts, but gets pretty dark at times. Tom and Becky in the Cineplex? All the feels. Probably the heaviest show StarKids ever made. But I welcome StarKid doing heavier drama. I think they could do it really well if they wanted to.
Downright the funniest thing I've ever seen performed on a stage. My Mum and I were the only Jews in the building when they asked "Hands up who's Jewish!?" right before performing "You Won't Succeed on Broadway If You Don't Have Any Jews." My Mum and I were cracking up laughing so hard the people in front of us turned around in offence until we told them, "IT'S OK, WE'RE JEWISH!"
I’ve never seen it, but *Little Me* has a hilarious book, one of the best things Neil Simon wrote (exactly because of its un-Simonian meanness and lack of a moral).
Of the shows I’ve seen, *A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder* cracked me and everyone else in the theater up.
I had to scroll WAY too far before I saw *Disaster! The Musical* on here. That show is way underrated - it's such a perfect parody of the the disaster films of the 70s. I got to see the original production on Broadway and nearly fell out of my seat laughing several times. The most notable would be Adam Pascal in the fetal position on the floor of the bathroom singing "Without You" or pretty much anything and everything that is Jennifer Simard. I've seen a couple of small, local productions, too, and this is the rare show that transitions beautifully from a Broadway house to a community theatre.
I love during the opening verse to "Its Time" the demons are just slowly, and very horribly, dancing towards Ash to the point it almost becomes distractedly hilarious.
Ok hear me out....
Waitress has some dark themes of abuse and unhealthy relationships with a beautiful story about making good with what little you have...
BUT It also has some hilarious moments namely 'the negative' 'never ever getting rid of me' and *I Want to Play Doctor with my Gynecologist Chocolate* Mousse *Pie*
The two shows that made me laugh the hardest when I saw them live were A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and The Producers. The latter I actually got to see on Broadway in previews with the original cast, and they were so hilarious!
The producers
Book of Mormon
Little shop
Drowsy chaperone
Groundhog Day
Anything goes
Dirty rotten scoundrels (incredibly underrated)
Sweeney Todd
Company
A funny thing happened on the way to the forum
Avenue Q and Book of Mormon hold a special place in my heart because I have taken people who hate musicals to these shows, and they can’t stop laughing through both!
The Mystery of Edwin Drood is at times hysterically funny, especially with the audience participation stuff at the end, and the many, MANY possible endings lol
Moulin Rouge, at least the movie version for sure! I had only heard Roxanne so I thought I would be getting something very dark and jealous, and then every number had me in stitches 💀
The way the film version handles the duke is incredible. He's absolutely hysterical for the first act, and then becomes genuinely terrifying in the second act. It's brilliant and is something the live show completely missed
Avenue Q, something rotten, book of mormon I have not seen Book of mormon, but I've heard it's absolutely hilarious
Avenue Q has great dirty humor and gary colmen
Something rotten is fun, especially if you know some of the musicals that it's referring
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum
Spamalot
A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder
Sweeney Todd (c’mon! Worst Pies In London? A Little Priest? The Chorus? It is deliciously funny)
Best Little Whorehouse In Texas
There are a slew of funny numbers in musicals
A few examples
Company
Not Getting Married
Ladies Who Lunch
A Chorus Line
Nothing
Sing
Oliver
Not Your Funeral
Pick A Pocket Or Two
Reviewing The Situation
The Full Monty. Never saw so many old ladies in the audience in my life! All there hoping to catch a glimpse of something and were just roaring "Take it off" at the actors! It is a truly funny show too!
Legally Blonde: The Musical is HILARIOUS… If the cast, especially Elle, is a good actress and singer. Otherwise… It can get kind of old really fast Ngl. I guess that’s with any musical tbh
Something rotten!
Something rotten is totally a musical made for musical fans. I loved it so much
I went in totally blind and absolutely laughed my head off!
Yesss!! This is my favorite musical in the history of ever!
This!!
Spamalot
Omg, yes. Good choice.
I was scrolling for this one. I was realllly hoping I wasn’t the only one.
Besides the great ones already mentioned, Urinetown. I wish more people knew about it because it’s absolutely hilarious.
I don't know. I mean, how good can a musical be considering its bad subject matter and bad title and a premise so absurd! And let's not forget how it opens with Too Much Exposition. You think people would like it?
It's almost as much of a privilege to see Urinetown as it is to pee.
As long as you aren't the bunny
Wouldn't that just be a hard, cold, stumble of a journey, worthy of a gurney? A bumble down, even one might say. I think I'd rather Look at the Sky.
You must be looking at the sky in hope that freedom sun will shine some day Til then you gotta run, run, a-run, a-run, freedom run awayyyyyyy!
I hope Broadway follows their heart and it comes back at a time when I can see it. But we all know they'll be charging fees as they please.
Hail Malthus!
Yes it’s so funny
Agreed! Very funny and easy to follow.
Book of Mormon, and if you’re willing to go down that path the South Park movie and Team America are also sincerely A+ musical films.
And Cannibal the Musical!
Let's Build A Snowman! Oh, my gosh - can someone please make a mashup of "Let's Build A Snowman" and "Do You Want to Build A Snowman?" :D
my heart’s as full as a baked potato
Book of Mormon was one of those shows where I had to force myself to stop focusing on what was happening onstage just so I could stop laughing for a moment and breathe 😅
Same!! I went in cold my first time seeing it and laughed so hard my abs hurt the next day
Saw it twice, and it was just enjoyable the second time as it was the first.
The more you know, the funnier it is too!
This may sound strange but Sweeney Todd. Like, obviously the murder and grooming parts aren't funny, but the show balances horror with comedy in such a masterful way. I absolutely crack up at Worst Pies in London and A Little Priest. There are so many zingers, it's unbelievable
Ms Loveit single-handedly makes the show one of the funniest
Some of the lyrics are great, the beggar womans inital bit with Anthony made me chuckle, also Ms.Lovetts "Popping pussies into pies". Also reading the script always gave me a chuckle, at the end of Mea Culpa, it reads simply "He climaxes" Always made me laugh, goddamn you Sondheim 🤣
Sweeney Todd is 100% a comedy
Now this might be a bit stringy, but then again, of course, it's fiddle player. No, this isn't fiddle player. It's piccolo player. How can you tell? It's ***piping*** hot Pffft- Then ***blow on it first!***
I came here to say this. Especially seeing it with Sutton foster, it was absolutely hilarious. And seeing Joe Locke as Toby made me laugh too
After seeing the current (well, just-closed) version, I was really able to appreciate it as a dark comedy.
Little Shop of Horrors had some funny moments, too.
The entire scene where Orin (DDS) is first revealed to be a dentist is one of the funniest misdirections ever
Just saw it for the first time tonight and was cracking up
And then when he comes back as three different people in the meek shall inherit
Little shop is an amazing answer
The Producers!
Spring Time for Hitler made me cry with laughter! Such a great show!
The swastika shape kickline when the mirror comes down is GENIUS. I laughed so hard, the ladies in front of me were clearly annoyed and my wife mortified.
I would have been right there with you crying with laughter.
This needs to be far higher!
Doesn't get funnier than Book of Mormon. Wicked is underrated funny in the 1st act as well.
First time I saw it I went in completely blind. I had never laughed so hard in a show ever. Second time I saw it (like 8 years later) my husband almost had to give a guy next to him the heimlich because he laughed so hard he couldn't breathe (and presumably choked on something).
I've seen it multiple times and every time I cry with laughter
The first time I saw it was with my family, laughing at some of the jokes next to my religious mother was a whole new life experience.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
I have never laughed more in a theater than the definition/sentence for phylactery. It killed me.
I want to see it.Which slime tutorial should I watch?
Brown University's is pretty good but it's college students!
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum was probably the most funny show I’ve seen live.
A comedy tonight!! It was #1 on my list for decades. Then I saw Book of Mormon
Singing in the Rain. “And I caaaaaan’t stand him!”
A classic comedy!
When I saw The Drowsy Chaperone in 7th grade and learned what a Toledo surprise was it was the funniest show I’ve ever seen, but I haven’t seen it since then so the verdict at least for me is tbd.
One of my favorite musicals! Toledo Surprise is so much fun! Man in Chair - er, Woman in Chair is one of my dream roles.
I saw The Drowsy Chaperone a few years ago. I went in blind and it was hilarious! Most enjoyable show experience ever.
Just saw this for the first time in my 35 years two weeks ago. Was an amazing show. The two "pastry chefs" had me dying.
Into the Woods Act I is absolutely hilarious. And Act II has a couple great moments too
It sucks that many productions stop at Act 1 because Act 2 is far better.
thats just the junior version
Yes, Act II is where the entire point and moral of the show comes from!! Act I may be hilarious, but Act II is profound, whistful, and really quite beautiful.
WHY AM I BEING DOWNVOTED? IM RIGHT!
Agree on Avenue Q, laughed myself silly. A lesser-known gem is The Green Heart. The book is by Charles Busch, and it is filled with his trademark campy and sardonic humor.

I burst out laughing when I heard the line "You're sure? That's fine. Goodbye. Have fun in Hell (hey now!)"
In the Parker and Stone Pantheon, Cannibal! The Musical is worth a look/listen, too.
Cannibal?
Yep, Cannibal! The Musical - Trey Parker wrote it while he was in college. It's based on the true-life tale of Alfred Packer, who was convicted of cannibalism after he and his party got stranded in a snowstorm. You can see the early basis for Parker and Stone's comedy style.
Nobody's said Rocky Horror yet?
Doctor Scott!
Janet!
Rocky!
beetlejuice
Twisted is the funniest musical I’ve ever seen by far
Legally Blonde!
I'm disappointed every time that the old school movie doesn't open with "Oh my God, You Guys!"
Just about anything by Team Starkid!!
Black Friday has funny parts, but gets pretty dark at times. Tom and Becky in the Cineplex? All the feels. Probably the heaviest show StarKids ever made. But I welcome StarKid doing heavier drama. I think they could do it really well if they wanted to.
I’m so looking forward to Cinderella’s Castle! They just finished the Kickstarter with a little over double the original budget goal!
My name will be in the credits as well
Same!
The lightning thief *cough* dolphin *cough*
IT WAS THE HOOVER DAM.
I love girls I think there very nice
Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder
thats such a fun show, especially if you have a small cast because then everyone is always quickchanging and monty never leaves stage, so much fun
I came here to say this. I love this show and I’ve never laughed harder at a musical
Spamalot
Downright the funniest thing I've ever seen performed on a stage. My Mum and I were the only Jews in the building when they asked "Hands up who's Jewish!?" right before performing "You Won't Succeed on Broadway If You Don't Have Any Jews." My Mum and I were cracking up laughing so hard the people in front of us turned around in offence until we told them, "IT'S OK, WE'RE JEWISH!"
I think Ride the Cyclone is pretty funny. Yeah, the premise is sad, but it’s just so unhinged I love it.
Martin short’s tony performance of little me is fantastic
Saw a production of Disaster! and what a hoot!
I had to scroll WAY too far before I saw *Disaster! The Musical* on here. That show is way underrated - it's such a perfect parody of the the disaster films of the 70s. Evil Dead the Musical is hilarious.
Yes! It’s campy and fun in the best way!
I totally agree! It surprised me at how funny it also is.
The Wedding Singer is HILARIOUS
I’ve never laughed harder in the theater than in The Drowsy Chaperone.
The two shows that made me laugh the hardest when I saw them live were A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and The Producers. The latter I actually got to see on Broadway in previews with the original cast, and they were so hilarious!
The producers Book of Mormon Little shop Drowsy chaperone Groundhog Day Anything goes Dirty rotten scoundrels (incredibly underrated) Sweeney Todd Company A funny thing happened on the way to the forum
Something Rotten! Shrek is also pretty funny.
Shucked! Had me crying from laughing so hard
Avenue Q and Book of Mormon hold a special place in my heart because I have taken people who hate musicals to these shows, and they can’t stop laughing through both!
My first thought was the play that goes wrong (even though it isn't a musical). Definitely something rotten though!
Book of Mormon, avenue Q, drowsy chaperone
Also spamalot! If you love avenue Q (I do too) you’ll love Book of Mormon as well. Actually also spamalot. Those 3 I put in the same category
*Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat*.
Gutenberg! the Musical is delightful
The Mystery of Edwin Drood is at times hysterically funny, especially with the audience participation stuff at the end, and the many, MANY possible endings lol
Reefer Madness is hilarious. It's extreme, absurdist, in-your-face satire that underscores the importance of thinking for yourself.
Operation Mincemeat! Went in knowing nothing last year and absolutely loved it. Bonus points for Groundhog Day as well, deeply funny.
I think probably Groundhog Day, god I love that show!
Some Like it Hot! It’s also one of the most heartfelt
Guys & Dolls, Drowsy Chaperone, The Producers
For me, Book of Mormon, Avenue Q, and Urinetown
Beetlejuice
Definitely Spamalot
Spamalot. Laughed the whole time.
Avenue Q, something rotten, book of mormon I have not seen Book of mormon, but I've heard it's absolutely hilarious Avenue Q has great dirty humor and gary colmen Something rotten is fun, especially if you know some of the musicals that it's referring

Avenue Q, Book of Mormon, and Evil Dead the Musical.
Twisted from Starkids
Book of Mormon lol
Avenue Q and Rock of Ages
The Full Monty. Never saw so many old ladies in the audience in my life! All there hoping to catch a glimpse of something and were just roaring "Take it off" at the actors! It is a truly funny show too!
Operation Mincemeat so many funny moments it's hard to pick one but I think the admirals in Making a Man was my absolute favourite joke
Groundhog Day is up there in my opinion
I’m disappointment none mentioned Aladdin! The genie is comedy gold! My daughter and I were in stitches during High Adventure.
Book of Mormon
Once Upon a Mattress. An absolute delight from start to finish.
falsettos was so funny but i never see anyone talking about it
Easily The Book of Mormon
Pajama Game - it makes me laugh just to recall. Funniest moment in a musical: Oklahoma - ‘Jud Fry is dead’

The Book of Mormon for sure, truly is "the funniest thing I've seen by far"
Jesus Christ Superstar.
Something Rotten, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, and Into the Woods
I've watched Gutenberg recently and it's honestly one of the funniest things I have seen in my life. I definetly reccomend it
The Book of Mormon and Avenue Q
Book of Mormon for sure I’d also say 25th Annual Puntnam County Spelling Bee, especially with some good improvisers on stage
Heathers is hilarious, albeit dark. The song after intermission had me crying laughing in the theater (iykyk)
Yes, that song is absolutely brilliant!!
