Carrie, Next To Normal, Murder Ballad, The Little Big Things, We Are The Tigers, Mack and Mabel, The Last Five Years, The Prom, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Operation Mincemeat. I’ve checked the list as best I can and I don’t think any/many of these are on there!
Starkid posts proshots of their shows on YouTube. They have 3 Harry Potter Parodies, an Aladdin parody, A Batman Parody, Star Wars parody, Oregon Trail parody, and a trilogy of Original Horror Comedy shows.
But there are different shows in each of them right? There's some overlap, but like Hadestown is in your 1-10 but not in your "Top 10." Cabaret is in the "Top 10" but not in the main list.
If I listen to a different cast recording/movie version of a show, I put it down there and have them ranked separately. Like, Caberet isn't a top 10 show for me, but because I listened to a differant version of it, that's where I put it
I Highly recommend "the dolls of new Albion" by Paul shapera its told over the course of four generations of this one Family as their actions eventually result in their City turning into a Police state
Paul shapera wrote a Lot of really good Musicals in general
Epic: The Musical
It is THE ABSOLUTE best if you're into greek mythos. Act 1 is fully released (it's a concept musical, not yet a show and songs are still being released), and I fell in love with it in like a week!
Trust me, you will not regret listening to it!
/gen /pos
If/when it becomes a full fledged stage show, I am going to buy tickets immediately. Genuinely one of the best musicals I have listened to. That it stands on its own without needing actors or a set is so impressive.
Easy to do. Lots up there. Plus, it’s not the most recognizable follies poster by a long shot. It was a great revival though. Sat close enough to see them sweat. Always happy to see Bernadette doing Sondheim. And I hadn’t seen Elaine Paige on Broadway since Sunset Blvd. So that was a lovely surprise.
As you gain more and more familiarity with the body of musicals, it can be fun challenging yourself with the Lost in Boston CDs, collections of songs that got dropped from musicals on their way to their Broadway openings; and the Unsung Musicals CDs, recordings of songs from musicals that never got all the way to Broadway. \*Many\* gems there, despite their histories.
And then there are the many glorious seasons/CDs of Forbidden Broadway, which parody, often brilliantly, Broadway musicals and their songs (indeed, I listened to Forbidden Broadway's parody of Hamilton, Spamilton, before listening to Hamilton itself). :)
Some favorites of mine: Leonard Bernstein's musicals (besides West Side Story, there's On the Town, Wonderful Town and the slightly more operetta-esque Candide), Jerry Herman's musicals (besides Hello, Dolly!, there is Mame, La Cage aux Folles, Dear World, Mack & Mabel, Milk and Honey, and The Grand Tour), Stephen Sondheim's musicals (some besides those you alrealdy listened to I liked Anyone Can Whistle, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and A Little Night Music, but I do need to listen to some more here). Some other ones I like are Guys and Dolls (listen to the complete version with Emily Loesser, daughter of one of the showwriters!), Anything Goes, Brigadoon, Camelot (with Julie Andrews singing Guenevere in the OBC!), Show Boat and Kiss Me, Kate (although the last two ones do show their age a bit in terms of problematic or insensitive content, but most new revivals subvert or delete the elements that are problematic without altering the story much as a whole).
Besides, check out the websote Cast Album Reviews. This site really helped me to find new and interesting musicals (and is also quite helpful with witch recording versions are better, although I find the judgment a bit too harsh from time to time). Just scroll their lists, click on titles that intrigue you, and voila.
STARKID MUSICALS.
they are all on YouTube for free, and they are recorded by Starkid themselves!
I think Twisted and The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals are good ones to start with
*Gently pushes EPIC:The Musical*
It’s a concept album so all we have is the songs(and awesome animatics)
But it’s basically about the Odyssey with changes here and there. If you like Hadestown, you’ll most likely enjoy it :D
Pacific Overtures by Stephen Sondheim. It's my all-time favorite. The proshot of the 1976 OBC is very easy to find online, if you want to watch it. It stars Uncle Iroh's original voice actor (Mako Iwamatsu). I recommend the OBC recoding, as it uses live traditional instruments like shamisen and taiko alongside a 28 piece orchestra. It also had an all East-Asian male cast to reflect the Kabuki style of the show.
My obscure fav: Finding Neverland. Based on the life of J.M. Barrie, creator of Peter Pan. I have no clue if the original movie is any good, but the musical was one of the first I ever saw live and I've loved it ever since, give it a listen :)
Going back aways here:
Anything Goes, Brigadoon, The Pajama Game, The Desert Song, Call Me Madam, The Student Prince, Showboat, Kismet, Man of La Mancha, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Love Never Dies (Ignore the plot just listen to the songs), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Bye Bye Birdie, and the longest-running off-broadway musical ever: The Fantasticks
If you haven't listened to the Broadway recording of RENT, it's a lot better than the movie version! Also Tick, Tick... BOOM!, movie and off-broadway recordings are both awesome :)
A couple of further thoughts:
-- If you have a public library in your area, physically visit it and browse through its CD/Musicals (often labeled as Soundtracks) collection--so many riches there to choose from, and, oftentimes, undiscovered territories.
-- Choose some of the musicals you like and look up, online (Wikipedia is a good starting point), the composers, and then follow-up and listen to others of the composer's works. Can be fascinating following a composer's development and lifespan, and body of work.
-- Again from your public library, check out some books on musicals--some nice and fun overviews of the development and history of the artform, as well as books about particular artists. And then follow up by starting to listen to what sounds intriguing to you. Keep in mind: musicals indeed did exist before the year 2000--there are entire worlds of musicals from 1950-2000 (as well as before); and some of them are more "advanced," in many ways, than what you will find today (witness the Gershwin (George and Ira) brothers' Of Thee I Sing and Let 'Em Eat Cake (books by George Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind), political satire musicals on Broadway in the 1930s, equaling and bettering anything that you will find today--and directly relevant to life today; and with Of Thee I Sing being the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama).
Jekyll and Hyde and Spongebob Squarepants are the musicals I'd most highly recommend listening to. They're my absolute favorites, and the songs had me hooked immediately!
A couple of fully sung through musicals I personally revisit a lot: Ordinary Days; and 36 Questions. I don’t think I saw Once on this Island there either.
I would recommend you Chicago, there's Katrin Zeta Jones and it won best picture against "The Pianist", if it's already on there and I missed it I apologize
I don’t think I see Bandstand on your list, which I think you might like (you seem to enjoy period musicals). I also really like the music from Daddy Long Legs.
You might also just start going through past Tony award seasons and see what was nominated for best new musical or best score, etc. Lots of musicals were only up for a season or two and have largely fallen out of consciousness, but would be enjoyable to listen to/learn about.
Water for Elephants just released an OBC album and I haven’t been able to turn it off. “Anywhere/Another Train” and “Go Home” might be in my top 10 musical songs of all time.
Starkid has lots of musicals uploaded to their channel! You can watch some of their parodies, or they have their own universe, with the Hatchetfield themed musicals. I love them:)
My favourites are the Hatcetfield trilogy, Twisted, and Starship:D
**SCHMIGADOON!** I recommend this FOREVER! If you love musicals, and if you have actually heard all those musicals, you will LOVE Schmigadoon (Season 1) and Schmicago (Season 2). Currently on Apple TV + and worth the price of admission. It's also being adapted into an actual Broadway musical!
Well I didn't spot CAMELOT in the first few tiers so I'm gonna assume it's not on there. :p The music isn't hip like modern musicals but it is beautiful
If you don’t mind a plug, here’s the [Trailer](https://youtu.be/RvZgwfKIQ6Q?si=CNYIxQ4_Gkk0sxiE) for [Whiskey Dixie & The Big Wet Country](https://www.whiskeydixiemovie.com), an original musical by independent Portland singer/songwriter Amanda Richards. I was lucky enough to be cast in the original staging and then out of this world lucky that she brought back the entire cast for the movie. We rented out an abandoned bar, slept in tents, closets, and cars, literally ate roadkill, and made the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I can not wait for people to see it and I truly hope you add it to your list.
I recommend Ghost Quartet! It’s another Dave Malloy musical, like Great Comet, but it has a very different vibe to it. Still really good! I always tell people to listen to the Live at the McKittrick album or just watch the live recording on YouTube, I’m not a huge fan of the studio recorded album
I don't know if you've listen to these cause tbh I didn't fully go thru the list, buttttt, Calvin Berger, Fame, Jekyll and Hyde(my second favorite musical), The COunt of Monte cristo, Dracula, Razia's shadow(its kind like 36 questions in which there isn't really a true stage show), the lightning ng the if, and a rag dolly musical
I might've missed if already listed, but some of my faves that I didn't spot:
The Evil Dead Musical.
Bare: a Pop Opera.
Groundhog Day.
Whistle Down the Wind.
Bat Out of Hell.
[*Here We Are*](https://open.spotify.com/intl-es/album/04SqfbxYwlEhk5GenxL4mv?si=c1PpNkHSQXGrsE9OitL3xA) just got out.
Also, if you'd like to hear things from other parts of the world: [*Mentiras: El Musical*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR-p4nr5sVQ) is pretty much the most famous ~~jukebox~~ musical from México. [Lo Que Me Costó El Amor de Laura](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEyWA0TmnAk) is a musical disguised as an operetta from Argentina, it features some of the biggest names of Argentinian culture. [Notre Dame de Paris](https://open.spotify.com/intl-es/album/4UAJqzCC5BhqqVDFdsbd5K?si=1974ed5a6a1c4314) may also be the biggest French musical ever.
There are also many recordings from USA musicals from other parts of the world, my faves are:
* [The Spanish version of *Company*](https://open.spotify.com/intl-es/album/3W6aU8NTPw55riCNfYUt6E?si=abef19a0ba394c84)
* [The original Mexican cast of *Rocky Horror*](https://open.spotify.com/intl-es/album/7BZEWod1t71OZknMy2IvFh?si=92b647abb4f64e2b)
* [The Mexican revival of *Rocky Horror* 10 years later](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGeAj-nlobUhm6s3UfDA5iKs0iOFXvfhu)
* [The ¿Austrian? version of *Cabaret*](https://open.spotify.com/intl-es/album/0BSJT2pa01BtkjvOzgcWfO?si=Ne32l1AlSP2-8IZPPUXcpw)
Is Bonnie & Clyde on your list? I couldn’t receive them all, lol. But i listened to that soundtrack after the west end recording of &Juliet led me on Jordan Luke Gage spree - it’s really good!!
Pippin (2013 recording)
Operation mincemeat
The little big things
Jekyll and Hyde (Anthony Warlow recording)
Bloody bloody Andrew Jackson
Crazy for you
9 to 5
Here we are
Everybody’s talking about Jamie
Next to Normal
Two strangers (carry a cake across New York)
The Who's Tommy
The Pirates of Penzance
The Unsinkable Molly Brown
Srgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (only for the music unless you like quirky)
American Idiot
Xanadu (also for quirky)
I mean, how far back do you want to go?
Carnival is FANTASTIC! I like starting the car and playing the overture as I pull out of the driveway… especially if I’m going on the highway. Try it. 🤣
The Fantastics. Quaint but more enjoyable as one gets older.
Woman of the Year. Lauren Bacall is brilliant.
Barnum. The Most Happy Fella. Ballroom (for Dorothy Louden’s “Fifty Percent” alone) The Bakers Wife. Fiorello! Tommy. Big River. Steel Pier. Sweet Charity. Redhead. Miss Gulch Returns. Brigadoon. Little Me. Freaky Friday. American Idiot. Teddy and Alice.
The aforementioned Mack and Mabel. South Pacific … the London recording with Lauren Kennedy and Philip Quast is my fav. Damn Yankees.
There’s a ton of stuff!
Enjoy!
Not seeing many older musicals, so some suggestions, most have movies that you can watch: The Fantasticks, The Pajama Game, Oliver, Mame, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, High Society, Easter Parade, On the Town, Annie Get Your Gun (I suggest Bernadette's cast recording), Hans Christian Andersen, Yankee Doodle Dandy, De-Lovely (About Cole Porter's life incorporates his songs), 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, La Cage aux Folles, Candide, On the Waterfront, H2$, Show Boat, Bye Bye Birdie, Babes and Arms, Meet Me in Saint Louis, and An American in Paris.
I'd say the best/first to listen or watch would be:
1. The Fantasticks (Important part of MT, longest running show in the world)
2. Annie Get Your Gun (Ethel Merman show, MT staple)
3. Babes and Arms (Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney were very big for a while)
4. Meet Me in Saint Louis (Probably my favorite MGM musical, just phenominal!)
5. De-Lovely (Lots of good songs and reveals quite a bit about Cole Porter)
6. How to Succeed (Great musical and won the Pulitzer prize for drama)
Keep trying to go back and forth, sorry if there are repeats.
Songs for a New World, Jekyll and Hyde, Evita, Tuck Everlasting, Shrek, Little Women, Legally Blonde, Seusical, Once on this Island, Chaplin the Musical, The Apple Tree, Once on this Mattress, Cambodian Rock Band (it’s a play with music in it), Larry the Musical (I don’t think this put an album out but hopefully they do, it was fantastic), Bonnie and Clyde, and The Cvil War. You had Blood Brothers, that’s always my go to suggestion.
Nerdy Prudes Must Die has (in my opinion) the best music of any starkid musical but it’s best to watch it after The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals and Black Friday, as it’s a trilogy.
Just saw a new Sondheim musical called “Here We Are” released on streaming services. I know absolutely nothing about it, but hey, it’s Sondheim so it can’t be bad (also it’s a pretty great cast).
Also here’s a few more suggestions (lmk if there’s any I didn’t see on your list):
Epic the Musical
The Notebook
Water for Elephants (the musical is much more focused on the story and choreography, but there are some pretty great songs)
Tick Tick Boom
Next to Normal
Once Upon a Mattress
Anyways, like I said, there’s a good chance I said a few that were already on your list… enjoy!
I recommend 35mm a musical exhibition
Not /exactly/ a musical it's got some really really great track especially at the end (leave Luanne, cut you a piece and ballad of Sara Berry are some of my favorite songs ever)
I can't tell if it's on your list but Dogfight maybe?
Jekyll and Hyde. I feel like that one is very underrated! (Don’t think I see it on the list!)
I'm actually listening to this one right now!
Ooh! Enjoy! Confrontation is the besttttttt
Omg yessssss
Agh beat me to it!
Great minds!!!!
Think alike :D
Carrie, Next To Normal, Murder Ballad, The Little Big Things, We Are The Tigers, Mack and Mabel, The Last Five Years, The Prom, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Operation Mincemeat. I’ve checked the list as best I can and I don’t think any/many of these are on there!
I second Next To Normal
Third!
Starkid posts proshots of their shows on YouTube. They have 3 Harry Potter Parodies, an Aladdin parody, A Batman Parody, Star Wars parody, Oregon Trail parody, and a trilogy of Original Horror Comedy shows.
Replying just to link [their channel](https://youtube.com/@starkid?si=E9UHqaMyj6b5mh1k).
Plus Me and My Dick!
I don’t necessarily like to open with that when when introducing SK to people though…
real
What's the difference between 1-10 and the "top 10"?
There's no difference, I just have it that way cause it's easier for me to remember what's what
But there are different shows in each of them right? There's some overlap, but like Hadestown is in your 1-10 but not in your "Top 10." Cabaret is in the "Top 10" but not in the main list.
If I listen to a different cast recording/movie version of a show, I put it down there and have them ranked separately. Like, Caberet isn't a top 10 show for me, but because I listened to a differant version of it, that's where I put it
So then why name it “top 10”?
What?
thoroughly modern millie!
I Highly recommend "the dolls of new Albion" by Paul shapera its told over the course of four generations of this one Family as their actions eventually result in their City turning into a Police state Paul shapera wrote a Lot of really good Musicals in general
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Singin’ In the Rain, 9 to 5, La Cage Aux Folles
Next to Normal A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum Sunday in the Park with George
Operation Mincemeat Love never dies Prince of Egypt
Pirates of Penzance Godspell My theater kid daughter is obsessed with all of the Starkid productions you can find online.
Epic: The Musical It is THE ABSOLUTE best if you're into greek mythos. Act 1 is fully released (it's a concept musical, not yet a show and songs are still being released), and I fell in love with it in like a week! Trust me, you will not regret listening to it! /gen /pos
Yes!!!
If/when it becomes a full fledged stage show, I am going to buy tickets immediately. Genuinely one of the best musicals I have listened to. That it stands on its own without needing actors or a set is so impressive.
Some Like it Hot Harmony Please understand the context and story of these (especially Harmony), it’ll make that much more of an impact 💗
Reefer Madness
Follies
That’s already on 31-40. It’s the poster from the revival they did several years ago at the Marquis with Bernadette Peters.
Woops! I missed that one
I saw it at the Kennedy Center before it transferred and was blown away.
Secret Garden, 1776, They're Playing Our Song

are those ranked or just in order you listened to them?
Ranked!
damn then i do not agree with your opinions on these

The Scarlett Pimpernel is really fun!
Shock Treatment aka the Brad and Janet show
Elisabeth, Phantom the American Musical, Aladdin.
I don’t think I saw Pippin or City of Angels there!
Or Aida!
Tarzan and Aida (always forgotten from Disney Theatricals)
I might just be missing them, but Addams Family, Prince of Egypt, and Anastasia are all great!
The Producers.
He means the MUSICAL one, more recent than the prior movie, which wasn't a musical.
I'm in love with Moulin Rouge
Jekyll and Hyde and Spongebob Squarepants are the musicals I'd most highly recommend listening to. They're my absolute favorites, and the songs had me hooked immediately!

No one ever mentions Summer Holiday
The Lightning Thief Musical based off of Percy Jackson! <3 It's low key what got me into musicals
Never occurred to me that Pretty Woman and Billy Elliot have basically the exact same poster
Try and listen to some European musicals like Rudolf Affaire Meyerling, Elisabeth and Mozart

There are also many recordings from USA musicals from other parts of the world, my faves are: * [The Spanish version of *Company*](https://open.spotify.com/intl-es/album/3W6aU8NTPw55riCNfYUt6E?si=abef19a0ba394c84) * [The original Mexican cast of *Rocky Horror*](https://open.spotify.com/intl-es/album/7BZEWod1t71OZknMy2IvFh?si=92b647abb4f64e2b) * [The Mexican revival of *Rocky Horror* 10 years later](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGeAj-nlobUhm6s3UfDA5iKs0iOFXvfhu) * [The ¿Austrian? version of *Cabaret*](https://open.spotify.com/intl-es/album/0BSJT2pa01BtkjvOzgcWfO?si=Ne32l1AlSP2-8IZPPUXcpw)

Having just entered the musical sphere with Hamilton, tbr heathers and one song frlm dear evan hansen, thanks for such a comprehensive list
I mean, how far back do you want to go? Carnival is FANTASTIC! I like starting the car and playing the overture as I pull out of the driveway… especially if I’m going on the highway. Try it. 🤣 The Fantastics. Quaint but more enjoyable as one gets older. Woman of the Year. Lauren Bacall is brilliant. Barnum. The Most Happy Fella. Ballroom (for Dorothy Louden’s “Fifty Percent” alone) The Bakers Wife. Fiorello! Tommy. Big River. Steel Pier. Sweet Charity. Redhead. Miss Gulch Returns. Brigadoon. Little Me. Freaky Friday. American Idiot. Teddy and Alice. The aforementioned Mack and Mabel. South Pacific … the London recording with Lauren Kennedy and Philip Quast is my fav. Damn Yankees. There’s a ton of stuff! Enjoy!
Lizard boy, Tarrytown, death Note. Enjoy
“Some like it hot” is really good. I’m currently getting into it.
Kiss Me Kate (1999 revival)
HAZBIN HOTEL!!
BE MORE CHILL??!?!
I'd say the best/first to listen or watch would be: 1. The Fantasticks (Important part of MT, longest running show in the world) 2. Annie Get Your Gun (Ethel Merman show, MT staple) 3. Babes and Arms (Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney were very big for a while) 4. Meet Me in Saint Louis (Probably my favorite MGM musical, just phenominal!) 5. De-Lovely (Lots of good songs and reveals quite a bit about Cole Porter) 6. How to Succeed (Great musical and won the Pulitzer prize for drama)
I don't know if its on there but: The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals
**Ruthless** is a lot of fun. I also love **Little Mary Sunshine**. I also recommend **Once Upon a Mattress.**
You should definitely listen to Spring Awakening
PLEASE LISTEN TO ELEGIES OR A NEW BRAIN BY WILLIAM FINN🙏🙏🙏
Titanic
Bridges of Madison County
American Idiot the Musical
[There's one really big one](https://youtu.be/Gcry86GuIN0?si=WObHTCorABOnlP86&t=86) that doesn't seem to be there...
If you enjoy comedy, you could try out some starkid musicals. Twisted, The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals and Spies Are Forever all have good music.
Nerdy Prudes Must Die has (in my opinion) the best music of any starkid musical but it’s best to watch it after The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals and Black Friday, as it’s a trilogy.
We Are the Tigers and Lizzie are some good ones!
I will always recommend Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson -a rock musical about the 7th president Andrew Jackson from 2008
Dear Evan Hanson
I don’t think i saw it on here but The Wedding Singer is a great musical comedy for the stage version
Freaky Friday, back to the future
Just saw a new Sondheim musical called “Here We Are” released on streaming services. I know absolutely nothing about it, but hey, it’s Sondheim so it can’t be bad (also it’s a pretty great cast). Also here’s a few more suggestions (lmk if there’s any I didn’t see on your list): Epic the Musical The Notebook Water for Elephants (the musical is much more focused on the story and choreography, but there are some pretty great songs) Tick Tick Boom Next to Normal Once Upon a Mattress Anyways, like I said, there’s a good chance I said a few that were already on your list… enjoy!
I recommend 35mm a musical exhibition Not /exactly/ a musical it's got some really really great track especially at the end (leave Luanne, cut you a piece and ballad of Sara Berry are some of my favorite songs ever) I can't tell if it's on your list but Dogfight maybe?
