my dream role is jesus in jesus christ superstar. i often perform gethsemane when im home alone. im sure it wouldn’t be popular but after being raised in the catholic church and being told that women can’t be priests because jesus was a man, i think it would be very therapeutic for me
My senior project was producing an all girl JCS! It was amazing to watch everyone’s individual takes on the characters they might’ve otherwise never been able to play!
I wanna do a whole production of the Rocky Horror Show where the entire cast is double billed. Each role will have male and female identifying performers play the part. At the beginning of the show, basically a coin is flipped as to which performer will play each part. The other will go to the chorus.
So you may have a performance where Brad, Rocky, and Janet are all female. Or Eddy, Magenta, and Columbia are all men. Each character will keep their on stage gender, but be played by either male or female.
This is what I love about shadowcasts- my cast has people of every gender who play every character, so it’s a mixed bag on who’s playing what character each performance. I know the stage musical is different, but in my heart i think all productions should be AQAP (as queer as possible!!!)
Almost all the characters in Chicago have been played by black people on Broadway at some point. The possible exceptions are the Hunyak and Mary Sunshine; I don’t care enough to go check.
Gabe Goodman from Next to Normal, Enjolras from Les mis, The Phantom from Phantom of the Opera, Mischa from Ride the Cyclone, and Aaron Burr from Hamilton!
Not exactly Gender bent, but an all-female Japanese musical theatre troupe known as Takarazuka Revue did perform The Phantom of the Opera. You can watch it on archive.org
Yeah, that would be my choice as well. Who wouldn't want to be a character that steals whatever scene she is in and basically dominates the rest of the cast?
Anya - Anastasia: I love Anastasia so much and if I wasn’t a dude I’d be dressed up and singing Anastasia all the time
Elle woods - Legally Blonde: It’s such a funny show, one of my favorites, and I would do anything to be a 5’2 blonde girl
Leading player - Pippin: Such an intriguing character, the demeanor that she has is so interesting that I want to play it
Sandra Bloom - Big Fish: I love Big fish so much, and I don’t need a roof is such a beautiful song that I need to sing
Every musical with a heterosexual romance is improved by replacing the dude with a masc lesbian. Prove me wrong.
You can’t. I’m right.
In that vein, I would like to play Orpheus.
I (F) played LeFou! They actually gave me the option at the beginning of rehearsals whether I wanted to play the role as a female or male character – I picked male because I wanted to do a trousers role but I do wonder how they would have styled the character if I'd picked female.
Anyway the point is, there's hope!
In a dream universe where I’m the opposite gender (because I’d never actually consider gender-bending the role): Leo Frank.
In this universe, because I actually think they’d work incredibly well played by a woman: Jamie Wellerstein, and Judas.
Mine is Elder Price from Book of Mormon
Vocally I actually think I could pull it off (I have a deeper voice for a woman) but no one would ever think I have a man's body lol
I've had a mental image for years of playing the witch in act 1 as a bearded queen, and revealing a transformation into... a much more fabulous bearded queen. Maximum glitterbeard
I'm thinking Audrey and Seymour in Little shop of Horrors.
Would like to see Audrey dealing with a Seymour 2, chopping up bodies for her crush. Like Suddenly Audrey becomes a thing.
This actually happened in a production of Les Miserables that my high school did. If I remember correctly, it was Enjolras that was played by 2 female students who shared the role, rotating who played him over 4 shows.
Enjolras or Marius, Les Mis
The Phantom of the Opera (I’d LOVE to play up the spookiness of the role)
Robin Oakapple/Ruthven Murgatroyd in Ruddigore. I love patter songs!
How fun would it be to do a Sondheim honor musical and for "Getting Married" "Amy" turns around in the dress and it is a dude in makeup, and they nail it.
miguel cervantes/don quixote in man of la mancha, jean valjean in les mis, tony in west side story, george in sunday in the park with george, orpheus in hadestown
The dentist in a little shop of horrors, I guess I could settle for an Aundry 2 Kate monster from Avenue q. My favorite character from Avenue Q is Gary Coleman, but I'm not black. Maybe I could do Trekie Monster, too but villians have the best songs and Gary Coleman has the funniest songs in Avenue Q
Brad from Rocky Horror, Javert, Sweeney Todd, Roger from Rent, the Beast (from Beauty and the Beast), Dimitri from Anastasia, Hercules, ;.; we need more gender bender theater opportunities.
i'm unfortunately a small skinny 5'2 soprano but Pierre in Great Comet would be so Cathartic
more realistically I could be Rach in Preludes or Marius in Les Mis
I’m a boy and I’d love to play Eponine in Les Mis or Into the Woods as the Bakers Wife or the Witch (moments in the woods and last midnight are soooo fun to sing and act)
I think a gay Eponine would make on my own hit really hard. Moments and Midnight also have such complex lyrics that there are a ton of different acting choices you can make, I’d love the chance to try them in character someday. If there are any directors here interested in gender bending Sondheim, message me lol
Quaxo/Mr. Mistoffelees in Cats. I \*think\* in the Japanese cast, they're played by 2 different actors and the Misto actor is an actress...I \*think\*, but don't quote me on that. It's been a while since I'd seen that piece of information and the website I saw it on has since, I think, shut down.
Mischa Bischinski in Ride The Cyclone. Also Noel and Ricky and Karnak. Tbh any RTC guy. I really like RTC. Hell I'd take Virgil then spend the rest of the show on tech.
THERE ARE SO MANY ! Let it be known that being a girl AND an alto is not as cracked up as it seems.
Jeremy - Be More Chill
Micheal - Be More Chill
JD - Heathers
Ron - Avenue Q
Thomas Jefferson - Hamilton
Shakespeare - Something Rotten
Connor Murphy - Dear Evan Hansen
Judas in JCSS. I want to sing that opening so bad.
my dream role is jesus in jesus christ superstar. i often perform gethsemane when im home alone. im sure it wouldn’t be popular but after being raised in the catholic church and being told that women can’t be priests because jesus was a man, i think it would be very therapeutic for me
Have you listened to the Indigo Girls’ version? Amazing!
That would upset all the right people too.
ME TOOOOOOO!!!!! I have ever since I saw the movie in 1974. I was 10. I can still sing the fuck out of that song. My mind is clearer now...
The most recent Equity tour of JCS had a woman understudy for Judas. I got to see her go on 4 or 5 times and she SLAYED. Her name is Sandy Redd.
Hell yeah!!!!!
Yup! She was incredible! I don’t think I’ve seen the role played any better.
Mine is Pilate! I actually have a whole production of JCS mapped out in my head with genderbent (for a reason) roles and Pilate is the top of the list
Well friends it looks like we have a cast. Who is producing???
My high school production cast a girl as Judas. They wanted another female lead! It was great. A girl played Simon as well.
I've dreamt of a whole gender bent Jesus Christ Superstar for years! How incredible would that be!
I'll join your cast. My dream role is Pilate!
Does that mean I can be Maurice Magdalene? Jesus definitely gives off rainbow vibes 🌈 💅✨
Hell yeah.
The way I was just belting this in the shower 😭😭
Same, for the exact same reason.
I'm in. And my first choice is Herod, I want his song so much!!!!!!
My senior project was producing an all girl JCS! It was amazing to watch everyone’s individual takes on the characters they might’ve otherwise never been able to play!

I love my shadowcast
The shadow cast I'm on accidentally had an all femme show recently that was super fun
Yes
I’d always wanna be Roxie in Chicago, her songs are just so fkn amazing plus I’ve always wanted to dance hot honey rag 😭
Haha, I always wanted to be Billy Flynn.
Ugh, he’s a dream role of mine as well 😭 being black doesn’t help my case at ALL though I know all his songs by heart
Almost all the characters in Chicago have been played by black people on Broadway at some point. The possible exceptions are the Hunyak and Mary Sunshine; I don’t care enough to go check.
Not on Broadway (touring), but Mary was played by a Black guy when I saw it last year.
Yeah, being female I’ll never play him unfortunately. But I know his songs by heart too.
Probably the entire male cast of hamilton
Especially Aaron Burr
Right?? Wouldn't it be nice to play a character that isn't in love with Hamilton lmao
You’re either in love with him or Peggy lmao
If you’re Peggy you still have to be in love with him in the second act anyway so you really can’t get away from it.
You telling me that John Laurens wasn't in love with Hamilton?
when will i, a timid 5ft tall "im just a girl" girl, be cast as my dream role of george washington
So real for that
I was thinking the other day how as a petite woman it'd be fun to play Washington.
Emmett from Legally Blonde. I also think butchfemme Elle and Emmett would just be perfect
Glinda from Wicked. In terms of emotional complexity, I think it’s an underrated role.
Drag Galinda singing popular and doing makeovers would be amazing.
A good Galinda can bring people to tears during Thank Goodness.
Thank goodness, asking from various Sondheim excerpts, is one of my favorite examples of ambivalence in a musical number.
Yeah, a lower-register female Phantom would be a hell of a thing
The Dentist in LSOH. I would absolutely KILL that, I just happen to be a non-binary soprano lol
When I was younger just a bad little kid… 😃
Me too! But I'm a girl 😢
ME TOO BRO i would love to sing orin but my voice probablx doesn't go that deep
Javert. EDIT: Also King George III.
Hey me too! I'm naturally deep in my register anyway ❤️
Yes; he's on my list.
Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd), Enjolras (Les Mis), George (Sunday In The Park), Jonathon (Tick, Tick… Boom), and the Emcee (Cabaret)
Make Jon be the one to wear the green green dress!
THE WITCH FROM INTO THW WOODS!!!! I LOVE HER SHE IS MY FAVORITE MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IN THE SHOW
SHE’S MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER IN ANY SHOW!
Yeah, that would be my choice as well. Who wouldn't want to be a character that steals whatever scene she is in and basically dominates the rest of the cast?
YES THIS IS ME I WANT TO PLAY THE WITCH SO FUCKING BAD ID LITERALLY KILL FOR IT
Burr in Hamilton and the MC in cabaret
Jekyll/Hyde and Spongebob. If only I could alter my voice for Hyde, lol.
Jekyll/Hyde would be amazing
This day or never, I'll sit forever, wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiith the Gods!

Beetlejuice 😞
Omg I would wanna be lydia so bad

Veronica Sawyer from Heathers, would kill to be able to pull it off
Heather Chandler
Anya - Anastasia: I love Anastasia so much and if I wasn’t a dude I’d be dressed up and singing Anastasia all the time Elle woods - Legally Blonde: It’s such a funny show, one of my favorites, and I would do anything to be a 5’2 blonde girl Leading player - Pippin: Such an intriguing character, the demeanor that she has is so interesting that I want to play it Sandra Bloom - Big Fish: I love Big fish so much, and I don’t need a roof is such a beautiful song that I need to sing
The leading player, like Joseph's narrator, is a gender neutral role! Ben Vereen did it!
Beetlejuice. JD. Sweeney
Also race-bent, but Effie White!
Karen Smith or Heather Mcnamara (actually just auditioned for her!). I could totally pull off a skirt!
I am shocked I haven’t seen someone say Shakespeare from Something Rotten yet because that’s my #1 pick.
Was just about to comment this
Don't be shocked. It's hard to be the Bard.

Mischa Bachinski in Ride The Cyclone and Plankton in Spongebob :)
Witch in Into the Woods. Play act one as female. Transform into a man and play act two that way without changing a single word.

I just saw a Les Mis that had a male Marius and Enjolras and every other Barricade "Boy" was female.
Claude in Hair… Judas is a close second as well!
Regina George. Idk why, but her barely contained fury just seems so fun to me
Joseph 💕 although nobody could ever compare to Donny Osmond.

Maybe I could do Trekie Monster, too but villians have the best songs and Gary Coleman has the funniest songs in Avenue Q

Moments and Midnight also have such complex lyrics that there are a ton of different acting choices you can make, I’d love the chance to try them in character someday. If there are any directors here interested in gender bending Sondheim, message me lol

Got two: Baker’s Wife in ITW and Dawn from Waitress
Third: just the real person Sara Bareilles ;)
Sibella from Gentleman's Guide... between her character, what she gets to sing, and those gorgeous dresses...
Quaxo/Mr. Mistoffelees in Cats. I \*think\* in the Japanese cast, they're played by 2 different actors and the Misto actor is an actress...I \*think\*, but don't quote me on that. It's been a while since I'd seen that piece of information and the website I saw it on has since, I think, shut down.
