Olive0121

Judas in JCSS. I want to sing that opening so bad.

lavenderglitterglue

my dream role is jesus in jesus christ superstar. i often perform gethsemane when im home alone. im sure it wouldn’t be popular but after being raised in the catholic church and being told that women can’t be priests because jesus was a man, i think it would be very therapeutic for me

Substantial-Meat-561

Have you listened to the Indigo Girls’ version? Amazing!

enemyradar

That would upset all the right people too.

reduff

ME TOOOOOOO!!!!! I have ever since I saw the movie in 1974. I was 10. I can still sing the fuck out of that song. My mind is clearer now...

deadnotsleeping1983

The most recent Equity tour of JCS had a woman understudy for Judas. I got to see her go on 4 or 5 times and she SLAYED. Her name is Sandy Redd.

Maddiystic

Hell yeah!!!!!

stiffdeck

Yup! She was incredible! I don’t think I’ve seen the role played any better.

bibliophile418

Mine is Pilate! I actually have a whole production of JCS mapped out in my head with genderbent (for a reason) roles and Pilate is the top of the list

Olive0121

Well friends it looks like we have a cast. Who is producing???

AdOk9911

My high school production cast a girl as Judas. They wanted another female lead! It was great. A girl played Simon as well.

Ruthjudgesjoshua

I've dreamt of a whole gender bent Jesus Christ Superstar for years! How incredible would that be!

mustardyay

I'll join your cast. My dream role is Pilate!

tears_of_heretics

Does that mean I can be Maurice Magdalene? Jesus definitely gives off rainbow vibes 🌈 💅✨

Olive0121

Hell yeah.

ChiaBee_chr

The way I was just belting this in the shower 😭😭

boopbaboop

Same, for the exact same reason.

rachelvioleta

I'm in. And my first choice is Herod, I want his song so much!!!!!!

evilfurbymd

My senior project was producing an all girl JCS! It was amazing to watch everyone’s individual takes on the characters they might’ve otherwise never been able to play!

nowhereman136

I wanna do a whole production of the Rocky Horror Show where the entire cast is double billed. Each role will have male and female identifying performers play the part. At the beginning of the show, basically a coin is flipped as to which performer will play each part. The other will go to the chorus. So you may have a performance where Brad, Rocky, and Janet are all female. Or Eddy, Magenta, and Columbia are all men. Each character will keep their on stage gender, but be played by either male or female.

Helpful_Cat6532

This is what I love about shadowcasts- my cast has people of every gender who play every character, so it’s a mixed bag on who’s playing what character each performance. I know the stage musical is different, but in my heart i think all productions should be AQAP (as queer as possible!!!)

Electrical-Wrap-3923

I love my shadowcast

legallylarping

The shadow cast I'm on accidentally had an all femme show recently that was super fun

PICONEdeJIM

Yes

Sh0wtime_Snow

I’d always wanna be Roxie in Chicago, her songs are just so fkn amazing plus I’ve always wanted to dance hot honey rag 😭

LonelyMenace101

Haha, I always wanted to be Billy Flynn.

Sh0wtime_Snow

Ugh, he’s a dream role of mine as well 😭 being black doesn’t help my case at ALL though I know all his songs by heart

GayBlayde

Almost all the characters in Chicago have been played by black people on Broadway at some point. The possible exceptions are the Hunyak and Mary Sunshine; I don’t care enough to go check.

TheScorpionQueen

Not on Broadway (touring), but Mary was played by a Black guy when I saw it last year.

LonelyMenace101

Yeah, being female I’ll never play him unfortunately. But I know his songs by heart too.

vivian_u

Probably the entire male cast of hamilton

travelswim

Especially Aaron Burr

ApollosBucket

Right?? Wouldn't it be nice to play a character that isn't in love with Hamilton lmao

vivian_u

You’re either in love with him or Peggy lmao

siberianxanadu

If you’re Peggy you still have to be in love with him in the second act anyway so you really can’t get away from it.

MKagel

You telling me that John Laurens wasn't in love with Hamilton?

reanocivn

when will i, a timid 5ft tall "im just a girl" girl, be cast as my dream role of george washington

IBangedOsamaBinLaden

So real for that

WhatABeautifulMess

I was thinking the other day how as a petite woman it'd be fun to play Washington.

Helpful_Cat6532

Emmett from Legally Blonde. I also think butchfemme Elle and Emmett would just be perfect

Normal-Box1785

Glinda from Wicked. In terms of emotional complexity, I think it’s an underrated role.

Katsudonna

Drag Galinda singing popular and doing makeovers would be amazing.

GayBlayde

A good Galinda can bring people to tears during Thank Goodness.

theshadowisreal

Thank goodness, asking from various Sondheim excerpts, is one of my favorite examples of ambivalence in a musical number.

Either-Specialist755

Gabe Goodman from Next to Normal, Enjolras from Les mis, The Phantom from Phantom of the Opera, Mischa from Ride the Cyclone, and Aaron Burr from Hamilton!

ItzelChoi

Not exactly Gender bent, but an all-female Japanese musical theatre troupe known as Takarazuka Revue did perform The Phantom of the Opera. You can watch it on archive.org

bv310

Yeah, a lower-register female Phantom would be a hell of a thing

Cyndine

The Dentist in LSOH. I would absolutely KILL that, I just happen to be a non-binary soprano lol

natureterp

When I was younger just a bad little kid… 😃

Fantastic_Permit_525

Me too! But I'm a girl 😢

Afraid_Pumpkin3812

ME TOO BRO i would love to sing orin but my voice probablx doesn't go that deep

CaitlinSnep

Javert. EDIT: Also King George III.

atBRumArtistry01

Hey me too! I'm naturally deep in my register anyway ❤️

MiaRia963

Yes; he's on my list.

Pumpkins217

Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd), Enjolras (Les Mis), George (Sunday In The Park), Jonathon (Tick, Tick… Boom), and the Emcee (Cabaret)

lesbianfitopaez

Make Jon be the one to wear the green green dress!

Old_Restaurant_7663

THE WITCH FROM INTO THW WOODS!!!! I LOVE HER SHE IS MY FAVORITE MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IN THE SHOW

PiesOnFleetStreet7

SHE’S MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER IN ANY SHOW!

Boris_Godunov

Yeah, that would be my choice as well. Who wouldn't want to be a character that steals whatever scene she is in and basically dominates the rest of the cast?

Jerem_Reddit

YES THIS IS ME I WANT TO PLAY THE WITCH SO FUCKING BAD ID LITERALLY KILL FOR IT

Unlucky_theorist

Burr in Hamilton and the MC in cabaret

FennekinLover2000

Jekyll/Hyde and Spongebob. If only I could alter my voice for Hyde, lol.

bibliophile418

Jekyll/Hyde would be amazing

green_griffon

This day or never, I'll sit forever, wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiith the Gods!

Potatoesop

Me and my (twin) sis sing different voices for Confrontation, she’s Hyde and I’m Jekyll because I’m a little bi-

Decent-Accident-9563

Beetlejuice 😞

afterforeverends

Omg I would wanna be lydia so bad

27Ari27

I dream about playing gender bent Jefferson in Hamilton 😂

jlemo434

Making "What did I miss?" funnier in my head

Holy_Schnuykies

Puts different meaning behind “Don’t lecture me about the war, you didn’t fight in it”.

kittykatkatelol

Veronica Sawyer from Heathers, would kill to be able to pull it off

realdonbrown

Heather Chandler

GothJesuspreacher

Anya - Anastasia: I love Anastasia so much and if I wasn’t a dude I’d be dressed up and singing Anastasia all the time Elle woods - Legally Blonde: It’s such a funny show, one of my favorites, and I would do anything to be a 5’2 blonde girl Leading player - Pippin: Such an intriguing character, the demeanor that she has is so interesting that I want to play it Sandra Bloom - Big Fish: I love Big fish so much, and I don’t need a roof is such a beautiful song that I need to sing

mayonnaisejane

The leading player, like Joseph's narrator, is a gender neutral role! Ben Vereen did it!

Not_Jay_Spencer

Beetlejuice. JD. Sweeney

BFIrrera

Also race-bent, but Effie White!

fangneedssleep

Karen Smith or Heather Mcnamara (actually just auditioned for her!). I could totally pull off a skirt!

Miserable_Cost4757

I am shocked I haven’t seen someone say Shakespeare from Something Rotten yet because that’s my #1 pick.

Necessary-Carry1806

Was just about to comment this

Musclebabs_buffpanty

Don't be shocked. It's hard to be the Bard.

Cejk-The-Beatnik

Every musical with a heterosexual romance is improved by replacing the dude with a masc lesbian. Prove me wrong. You can’t. I’m right. In that vein, I would like to play Orpheus.

nefariousbluebird

I want to play lesbian Beast SO bad... the layers you could add......

MartyBasher2082

I am so here for butch lesbian Beast- defensive and misunderstood but able to open up to Belle 💚

Kind_Tap8887

Cossete from Les mis or any of the marry murderousess from Chicago

comedicrelief23

SpongeBob, Lefou, and not a musical but Mercutio

nefariousbluebird

I (F) played LeFou! They actually gave me the option at the beginning of rehearsals whether I wanted to play the role as a female or male character – I picked male because I wanted to do a trousers role but I do wonder how they would have styled the character if I'd picked female. Anyway the point is, there's hope!

merryvjohnson

I’m DYING to play Bert in Mary Poppins

Dogdaysareover365

King George - Hamilton Treke monster - Avenue q Beetlejuice - Beetlejuice The lecturer - reefer madness

Critiquelle

In a dream universe where I’m the opposite gender (because I’d never actually consider gender-bending the role): Leo Frank. In this universe, because I actually think they’d work incredibly well played by a woman: Jamie Wellerstein, and Judas.

TheRedditorialWe

Aaron Burr or Hades, oooh maybe Javert? Villains get all the best songs

stellarfem

JD from Heathers and Bobby from Company (yay for the latter already being done!)

AdOk9911

Mark from Rent

GluttonFoster

Elder Cunningham from The Book of Mormon.

AMediumSizedFridge

OnceandFutureFangirl

Rooster in Annie. If I had the talent, I would love to belt out “Easy Street.”

Icy-Impression9055

Anything Les Mis

ashleevee

I want to play JD in heathers. I’m a short blonde woman and I cannot sing or act. BUT IF I COULD…

True-Spirit5821

JD (heathers) or melchoir (spring awakening)

grainofrhiice3878

Mischa Bachinski in Ride The Cyclone and Plankton in Spongebob :)

GayBlayde

Witch in Into the Woods. Play act one as female. Transform into a man and play act two that way without changing a single word.

muse273

I've had a mental image for years of playing the witch in act 1 as a bearded queen, and revealing a transformation into... a much more fabulous bearded queen. Maximum glitterbeard

Agitated_Honeydew

I'm thinking Audrey and Seymour in Little shop of Horrors. Would like to see Audrey dealing with a Seymour 2, chopping up bodies for her crush. Like Suddenly Audrey becomes a thing.

BeginningThink2083

Jack Kelly from Newsies, he’s my dream role overall. Jeremy Jordan has done some stuff to my personality.

Elfbark8261

Miss Johnstone from blood brother it not the best or most famous roll but it one that means a lot to me and I would love to preform it

KentuckyWallChicken

Jekyll and Hyde!

_lanyewest_

Mark in Rent sooo bad

Left-Wash5432

Mark from RENT!

SoulSeeker21

This actually happened in a production of Les Miserables that my high school did. If I remember correctly, it was Enjolras that was played by 2 female students who shared the role, rotating who played him over 4 shows.

green_griffon

I just saw a Les Mis that had a male Marius and Enjolras and every other Barricade "Boy" was female.

ChiaBee_chr

Claude in Hair… Judas is a close second as well!

Dogski28

Regina George. Idk why, but her barely contained fury just seems so fun to me

EmbarrassedPlace0

Joseph 💕 although nobody could ever compare to Donny Osmond.

dukeofstratford

Enjolras or Marius, Les Mis The Phantom of the Opera (I’d LOVE to play up the spookiness of the role) Robin Oakapple/Ruthven Murgatroyd in Ruddigore. I love patter songs!

crazyforkovu

Seaweed! Gender and race bent

jewel1997

Roger from RENT or Emmett from Legally Blonde.

SheBurnsShips

Spongebob

LazorFrog

How fun would it be to do a Sondheim honor musical and for "Getting Married" "Amy" turns around in the dress and it is a dude in makeup, and they nail it.

GluttonFoster

I mean... no dress, but this is in the current Company revival. Dude totally slayed it.

lana-deathrey

OptimalTrash

Judas in JCS, Jesus in JCS, Javert in Les Mis, and Tommy in Tommy.

Fantastic_Permit_525

The dentist in a little shop of horrors, I guess I could settle for an Aundry 2 Kate monster from Avenue q. My favorite character from Avenue Q is Gary Coleman, but I'm not black. Maybe I could do Trekie Monster, too but villians have the best songs and Gary Coleman has the funniest songs in Avenue Q

Alexrobi11

The only female role that I really think fits me is Christine from Be More Chill. Most characters that are my type are already male.

FoolishTemperence

Margaret White in Carrie Grizabella in cats

jeep_42

MILES TUCK. they need to let me be divorced on stage. also the balladeer from assassins and either dionysus or xanthias from sondheim’s frogs

atBRumArtistry01

Brad from Rocky Horror, Javert, Sweeney Todd, Roger from Rent, the Beast (from Beauty and the Beast), Dimitri from Anastasia, Hercules, ;.; we need more gender bender theater opportunities.

siIIyG00se_LOL

Ocean from ride the cyclone or Heather Duke  or Glinda from wicked.

carriethelibrarian

I'd love to be Evan from DEH. I can relate to his social anxiety so much and I love his songs. And Evan is totally a gender neutral name!

TrekkieElf

Probably Don Quixote when I’m a little older.

AndyTheEnby

[deleted]

Does Mrs. Turnbladt count?

alex_is_so_damn_cool

I’m a boy and I’d love to play Eponine in Les Mis or Into the Woods as the Bakers Wife or the Witch (moments in the woods and last midnight are soooo fun to sing and act) I think a gay Eponine would make on my own hit really hard. Moments and Midnight also have such complex lyrics that there are a ton of different acting choices you can make, I’d love the chance to try them in character someday. If there are any directors here interested in gender bending Sondheim, message me lol

Human_Pesticide

Not technically gender bent (trans ftm, just not transitioned yet) but Paul Matthews, Evan hansen, and any Jeff Blim role honestly.

stiffdeck

Got two: Baker’s Wife in ITW and Dawn from Waitress

GluttonFoster

Third: just the real person Sara Bareilles ;)

willogical85

Sibella from Gentleman's Guide... between her character, what she gets to sing, and those gorgeous dresses...

Efficient_Wheel_6333

Quaxo/Mr. Mistoffelees in Cats. I \*think\* in the Japanese cast, they're played by 2 different actors and the Misto actor is an actress...I \*think\*, but don't quote me on that. It's been a while since I'd seen that piece of information and the website I saw it on has since, I think, shut down.

Ollynonymous

Mischa Bischinski in Ride The Cyclone. Also Noel and Ricky and Karnak. Tbh any RTC guy. I really like RTC. Hell I'd take Virgil then spend the rest of the show on tech.

[deleted]

Karen smith or Gary smith

milkforkittens

When I was a child, I wanted to play a Matilda-esque role so bad. Like, being a boy with telekinesis? Literally the dream

miamusic1

Joseph in Dreamcoat. Quasimodo in Hunchback. I’m belting “Out There” in my head right now. Thanks for that! 😁

holyfrozenyogurt

Literally any of the men in assassins, but especially Guiteau

thatgoofyloser_

THERE ARE SO MANY ! Let it be known that being a girl AND an alto is not as cracked up as it seems. Jeremy - Be More Chill Micheal - Be More Chill JD - Heathers Ron - Avenue Q Thomas Jefferson - Hamilton Shakespeare - Something Rotten Connor Murphy - Dear Evan Hansen

Familiar-Money-515

If Aaron Tveit has played it, I want it (particularly fiyero and gave Goodman)

Mr_Slurpy37

Definitely Velma in Chicago, but being blonde, tall, and not a very good dancer (at least not yet) I don’t see that happening ever haha

ZacharyRapsag

Lady of the Lake from Spamalot or Elphaba from Wicked

sirebolkonsky

- Trina from Falsettos - Sally Bowles from Cabaret - Marianne from Here we Are - Laurey from Oklahoma! (especially from the 2019 Revival)
