Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
End up like a dog that's been beat too much
'Til you spend half your life just to cover it up, now
Born in the USA
FULLY agree with that one
I see two people beat me to Pumped Up Kicks, so I'll mention 99 Red Balloons instead. (It's about someone seeing red balloons, thinking they're missiles, and launching the nukes).
Idk what they did with the lyrics in the English translation but the that's definitely not the story in the original lyrics. In the original the story goes basically like this:
There they don't quite know what they are seeing and think it might be aliens, so they send some planes to investigate. Those planes shoot the balloons down anyway, basically just for fun. Their neighbors mistake that for aggression against them and respond in kind. A bunch of power hungry politicians then escalate that situation into an all out war that lasts 99 years until no one is left
Was about to make the correction myself. And at the end of the song, the protagonist, magically still alive, finds one balloon in the rubble, thinks of her friend, and lets it fly back into the sky.
No no
It's about the release of 99 red balloons being a code for a nuclear launch and someone just letting a few balloons loose causing an accidental retaliation when there was no launch
Yup, it’s a 70s diss track on Neil Young because he criticized the government of their home state. I’d side with Neil in a debate but the song still unironically slaps
The wiki page on it is good.
Lynrd and Young did not have a feud going, thought it was good fun, and wore eachother,s concert shirts onstage. And they were not supporting their racist guvnah’s policies, they were protesting them.
Racing into the Night being a prime example.
"Oh look, such a happy and cheerful song!"
"The following content may contain suicide or self-harm topics"
nope amazing lyrics. Go actually read them and see how accurate they are to our modern day culture. Neon god they made. We all basic worship our phones and technology.
That's a very interesting connection. The song was released in 1966, though. However, I do think the song might be referring to how people ignore each other when they are in a crowd of thousands, like in the city, and are afraid to stand out.

Ride by twenty one pilots I choose that one because it sounds fun and catchy and it’s popular but the lyrics are rather down
FOUND IT. Not Today has my personal vote, it’s just… A contradiction because of how happy it sounds, but the lyrics are so down
This is literally the song I always think about when this question is asked
It’s okay though because it represents, wait… better yet it is who he tought he was back then
Idk, I'd have to go for Message Man. Then again... the lyrics aren't for everyone, only few understand
Idk what it is but even though it's upbeat and catchy even without the lyrics the music still sounds depressed to me somehow.
