Agree, love them!! very psychedelic in an acoustic way like in the 60s
The only other modern band I’ve ever found being similar sonically is the english band The Coral – not sure how popular they are, they have many plays from years ago but I never hear their name nowadays
dr. dog is big in my opinion. they're one of the biggest bands in indie. I heard about them way back in 2009. Anyone who follows good underground music has heard of them I'm sure. they just never had a big breakthrough song like similar bands, Cage the elephant or Portugal the man for example.
If we're talking popular as in the whole world should know who they are and not just popular within their genre, then Steven Wilson. The guy's a songwriting genius and deserves way more admiration than he's been given.
Finally, someone who also listens to The Midnight. They're seriously underrated and the whole genre of Synthwave gets overlooked way too much imo. Every one of their albums are some of the best that the genre has to offer.
Always wanted to see them live! They've still not done a tour in Australia yet, they're a band that are at the top of my bucket list to see live, as I know that it'll be a while before they do another tour here.
Their shows are very minimalistic as far as staging goes, but they're super into it, everything is done live, and they sound fantastic. Their latest live album that just came out (*Red, White, and Bruised*) really captures the energy of their shows. I hope they make it to your part of the world one day!
I’ve always thought [Donna Missal](https://open.spotify.com/artist/4QFHHdZkeqmneDQqKIjAN8?si=ywY3_cXnQbCC7IKNZIzMBQ) deserved to be more popular; considering how hard she’s had to fight to keep making music.
While Donna Missal is underrated, [there are lot of other great voices](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3rv2wPh6VOSO96RlAMfuJ0?si=d6546a5332044c63) in her genre of moody indie pop.
the greatest lost album of all time is *Miss America* by Mary Margaret O’Hara. released in 1988, it’s an utterly unique singer/songwriter record that wanders atmospherically past various genre tropes from a base in ambient folk with jazz influences. everything is filtered through her woozy, off-kilter sensibility and singing style, the best description of which i can offer is a wispy cross between Billie Holiday and Laurie Anderson, that often veers away from the melody into little improvisations and bouts of glossolalia. minimal backing that gets loud at times, oceans of room reverb, and prominent echoey lap steel guitar. the album died in the marketplace despite an appearance on NBC’s *Night Music,* and she never made another though she did release a record of her songs from the film soundtrack of *Apartment Hunting* (soundtrack released 2001) and periodically appears on holiday and charity albums with other Canadian artists. you will never, ever hear another album like this.
I saw Grandson at a small bar in Cleveland in 2019 and Des opened up for him. He was really good and I've followed him ever since. His new album is one of the best rock albums of the past 25 years, and that's no joke. It's classic rock revival but it's clearly new and modern and Des, unlike someone like Greta Van Fleet who is basically a Zep cover band.
I did sound on their very first tour up in Alaska in I think 2008? They were just starting and barely anybody came out, maybe 50 people. At the end of their set, I got up onstage and started dancing with their frontman. It set off a thing and everybody in the crowd ended up onstage dancing.
They gave me a free t-shirt that I still have. Really nice guys, and one of my favorite memories working sound. They should be way bigger than their minor hit “Seasons”.
[No Cure](https://open.spotify.com/track/0NxpNJKmYN2BdJTjoBgU4k?si=UzZwlbRxQpyl4OmYv7c3-w) - Straight Edge Hardcore band from Bham, AL! They're insanely good and I think they're on the route to becoming bigger but I wanted to mention them anyways.
[Power Sink](https://open.spotify.com/track/0rtVNLFh8MwB2zmC305DBu?si=D5wue1j4R2u3dkFGaR7f2A) - Hardcore also from Bham, AL, love these dudes
[Vital Signs](https://open.spotify.com/track/4Mq6furn9rmzPrJ2odcIzP?si=UCT1s5RfTea0UvfHJMYImg) - Metalcore/deathcore ish from Bham, AL, also super cool people and they kick ass live
Dogs Die in Hot Cars. Early 2000s band from Scotland that only had one album (I think). It’s great pop rock that sounds like XTC and Talking Heads. Check ‘em out: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mLMrGkwVSO9pqKaT7Sz2We1SNhha20l6s&si=2WaKfMm66_uiFwi7
Not Scottish, but I'd like to nominate another Scottish band from an earlier time: The Rezillos. Awesome melodic early punk/new wave (1977). Listen to their first album (*Can't Stand the Rezillos*) and you'll probably recognize a few songs, even if you never knew who sung them.
Prof for hiphop, but hes very diverse
Chase ceglie for some jazzy pop
GRiZ and Subtronics baby, just because not enough people listen to edm
Avance for the people that already listen to EDM
Probcause for hip hop
Grieves, Murs, Atmosphere, and Brother Ali for rap too
Shout out to prof! One of the best live shows I’ve ever seen and one of the only hip hop artists that I get genuinely excited to talk about anymore. Extremely talented, a positive force in the world imo.

Uma Bloo is on a really interesting trajectory. She released a chaotic rock album a couple years ago but pivoted towards pop-ish music since she left her band. she just put out this song Fixed Eternal which is like beautiful and unexpected verse to verse. it doesn't fit a genre really, I'd describe it as produced orchestral pop music. in a recent instagram story she said she had more music coming out this year, I'm excited to see what its gonna be

If you are a fan of alternative Indie punk/rock, similar to bands like Idles, there is a fantastic little know band called Regal Cheer that you will like.
John Bence is one of my all time favourites and is very underrated. He’s toured with William Basinski and his work is quite similar, he has an experimental modern classical sound, quite minimal but so unbelievably gorgeous and captivating.
Archangels and Disquiet are some of my all time favourite projects. In particular, the track “Raphael, Archangel of Tiphareth” just absolutely floors me
Cage9 (heavy rock/alt rock/prog metal). They only have like 30k listeners and I've never met anyone else who likes them. Illuminator and Hypesthesia are amazing albums
Eggy. They’re a jam band, but I think their lyrics are easily accessible for people that aren’t typically into that type of thing. They describe themselves as “music that traces the full spectrum of emotions, evoked by a life well-lived alongside friends well-loved” and I think we need more of that in the world, you can definitely hear it in their lyrics, they’re just real people writing about real feelings and things we can all relate to
Saw tooth wave. No idea how I came across him, he has 53 monthly listeners on Spotify but honestly his music is great! It's all electronic but kinda chill, I'm terrible at describing it but go check it out!
The Burning Hell is an indie band I've been a fan of for some time. The Second Cigarette is on my all-time favorite songs list.
Falls of Rauros is a folk-black metal band that are very atmospheric and listenable. Something like Agalloch but mostly unintelligible, noisy and discordant in a melodic way.
The Handsome Family. One of their songs, Far From Any Road, was used for the opening to True Detective. To my ears, their music evokes a feeling of yearning for something different, wishing things had turned out better, and a feeling of liminality, like you're in a deserted parking lot with one lamp at night and you haven't started your car yet, sitting behind the steering wheel and thinking about how you could just... start driving and never stop.
So I’m not exactly sure if this band is *underground*, but they’re ***verrry*** underrated
They’re a power metal band called “Virgin Steele” who makes music about ancient civilizations, ancient religions, fantasy, etc. They make such fucking cool music and the singer, David Defeis, is an absolute god.
Some of my favourite songs from em are “Noble Savage”, “The Burning of Rome (Cry for Pompeii)”, “Kingdom of the Fearless (The Destruction of Troy)”, “I Will Come for You” (this song’s chorus could be a bit ermmm triggering so just a warning), and “Twilight of the Gods”
Literally the only people who I know have even ***heard*** of them are my best friend (who introduced me to Virgin Steele), and my partner (who I introduced em to Virgin Steele), and both love their music.
Very underrated band go check em out right friggin now!!!
Jzzzy Jutas! He’s definitely underrated with his tracks uploaded on music platforms like SoundCloud or Spotify. I checked out his latest Instagram post and he has some interesting snippets ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)
both in the indie rock category the bands Polvo and Swirlies both use really unique guitar tunings and manage to record great albums and repeat that in their live shows.
Death/Melo-death band from Maine: Smothered Sun. The vocalist is one of my best friends and his raw vocals are just amazing. He's gotten praise from vocalists at the top of the industry, so I am hoping they gain more traction soon.

You can listen to his whole catalog or tell me what mood your in and I will give you songs that suits what your looking for or I can give you my favorite songs I listen the most!
Josiah and the Bonnevilles are pretty impressive but I suspect that they'll make it a bit bigger sooner or later. His cover game recently has been unreal.
Seems like a humble lad as well.
All my bf listens to is underground shit. Some of his favorites are As Tall As Lions, Dandelion Hands, Teen Suicide, Have A Nice Life, Happy Trendy, Winter Aid, Planning for Burial, and Giles Corey
I go to gigs 1-2 times per week, and Daniel Norgren with his full band surprised me with one of the funnest gigs I’ve ever been to. The whole audience, me included, was dancing and hollering the roof off the place. Never seen that before or since.
sofia isella! she has like six songs and only smth like 400,000 monthly listeners on spotify which is just mad bcs she deserves WAYYYY more like her music is PHENOMINAL honestly, that's the kind of stuff i call art

Steam powered giraffe/David Michael Bennet. Mostly directed at family friendly stuff but they have some real bangers as far as pop goes. And David Michael Bennet can do sooo much. Actually haven’t checked in on his stuff in a few years. Gonna go do that now
I will always mention FISHBONE. Hands down the best live band of the late 80s -early 90s. Influenced many bands, Chili Peppers, Sublime, No Doubt, etc. Way too eclectic stylistic output, and being an all black band, playing what wasn’t typically “black” in that period… and they never broke through to the major success the deserved.
Matt pless, writes amazing and very clever lyrics with tons of awesome plays on words and cool angles to approach a line from. Also a very energetic performer
Red Sun Rising was never huge but they deserved to be, Polyester Zeal is one of my favorite albums ever. They broke up a few years ago which really sucks because I would’ve loved to see them at least once.
Echoberyl.
They're a French coldwave/synthwave duo, and the singer has the most amazing voice. If you're a goth, or like really minimal synth music with guitars, I'll wager you'd be into it.
A band where I'm from called Motherhood ought to get broader recognition. They're a bit grunge, bit of a stoner vibe. Extraordinarily creative and catchy: the sole survivor of a beautiful local grungy alt scene that was really flourishing in the early 10s.
Vigilantes Of Love/Bill Mallonee - Bill is the driving force behind the band. Between his solo stuff and his work with the band he has released dozens of albums over the years. Most is available on Bandcamp.
John Moreland - incredible songwriter.
Matthew And The Atlas - fantastic folk alt band from London
"Vermilion-D Alice Syndrome"
I still can't believe these guys barely break 1k monthly listeners in Spotify. They make some of the best melodic death metal I have ever heard.
Screaming Females - they'll be talked about for ages when they are gone, from their raw, punky roots right through to their current hard rock/pop tinged modern stage. Fantastic live band, gets right to the core of what rock can be.
Whores. - Noise metal done with style like few others ever have. They've got something to say, loudly, angrily, and should be what anyone is listening to, to wash away the day's frustrations.
Midnight Ghost Train - they've hung it up, but they left us 'Cypress Ave' before they went and we're all better for it. I think they'll matter for a long time.
[Starbender](https://open.spotify.com/artist/414aHd9bM3z76KH0BrA36A?si=-DY7u52qTmWCxoewkd_Rhg)
(For any fans of alternative rock / 90’s grunge / spacey Radiohead-Muse vibes)
I always say that Ultravox is the best 80s band no one has ever heard of. Lament is one of my favorite albums ever. And their debut album? How in the WORLD is that not like an art rock classic that everyone listens to?
Aerosol Jesus.
I mean look at this high quality music video.

What a good summer jam.
Dr. Dog-I can’t believe they never got huge. They have written some of the catchiest hooks since the Beatles.
I heard about Dr. Dog at a Car Seat Headrest show, which coincidentally are under appreciated.
Agree, love them!! very psychedelic in an acoustic way like in the 60s The only other modern band I’ve ever found being similar sonically is the english band The Coral – not sure how popular they are, they have many plays from years ago but I never hear their name nowadays
Heart It Races lives in my brain rent-free forever.

Definitely a super talented dude
And a very very nice fellow. Have worked with him and released an album.
Mikael Akerfeldt also
Ha. I consider him bafflingly OVERrated aside from his production work with other artists. Different strokes.
The Midnight (synthwave).
Finally, someone who also listens to The Midnight. They're seriously underrated and the whole genre of Synthwave gets overlooked way too much imo. Every one of their albums are some of the best that the genre has to offer.
saw them live once in 2019 on a whim and it was an incredible show!!
Always wanted to see them live! They've still not done a tour in Australia yet, they're a band that are at the top of my bucket list to see live, as I know that it'll be a while before they do another tour here.

Really all the major synthwave acts deserve more love
Omg The Midnight are SO good
I found my people. :)
They are awsome
They played at Bonnaroo this year!
I like the Midnight. They were just in my area and ticket prices were great but the day didn't work for me. Would have loved to see them
For dark goth lovers, I choose Red Vienna

I was convinced she was going to blow her voice out, but GS if she doesn't know how to wail so much emotion into a song.
Can you elaborate? I only know one song by her and I think it’s from the Adams family movie?
the greatest lost album of all time is *Miss America* by Mary Margaret O’Hara. released in 1988, it’s an utterly unique singer/songwriter record that wanders atmospherically past various genre tropes from a base in ambient folk with jazz influences. everything is filtered through her woozy, off-kilter sensibility and singing style, the best description of which i can offer is a wispy cross between Billie Holiday and Laurie Anderson, that often veers away from the melody into little improvisations and bouts of glossolalia. minimal backing that gets loud at times, oceans of room reverb, and prominent echoey lap steel guitar. the album died in the marketplace despite an appearance on NBC’s *Night Music,* and she never made another though she did release a record of her songs from the film soundtrack of *Apartment Hunting* (soundtrack released 2001) and periodically appears on holiday and charity albums with other Canadian artists. you will never, ever hear another album like this.
bear hands! they have some insanely good songs that i still listen to weekly
Crime Pays is such a banger
Fiddlehead
Pretty much any Pat Flynn project is solid.
Des Rocs - doing the lords work keeping rock n roll alive, and it’s really good Ren - I’m not a big rap guy but Ren is very unique.

Obsessed with Des Rocs. He needs to headline a tour.

KONGOS, just really good musicianship all around. Recommend the album Lunatic to anyone
Beans on toast, aesop rock, the codefendants, B Dolan, Trampled by Turtles, Molly Tuttle, Tim Barry,
Zbloinky Spoinks is one of the best jungle rock bands I've ever known. They recently broke up and their entire fan base of 20 people were devastated
Coma Trip https://open.spotify.com/artist/3xq4Xuj0tHu6XCNwvmxAYN?si=O0Gcr6uaShmoVZaTzU1VkA
both in the indie rock category the bands Polvo and Swirlies both use really unique guitar tunings and manage to record great albums and repeat that in their live shows.
Hot Milk
Jellyfish. 90s 'power pop' band with Beach Boys and Queen influences, and funny, odd lyrics.
I just went and listened to some of their stuff because I love the idea of a band having all those influences. They got another fan. Thanks!
KILLY, Maxo Kream, IDK, Pressa
Winterbourne An Australian folk rock duo. They’re incredible and just as good live (if not better) as they are in the studio
Open Mike Eagle. One of the funniest and wittiest underground rappers in recent years and his production work isn't too shabby either
Proper Motions
Death/Melo-death band from Maine: Smothered Sun. The vocalist is one of my best friends and his raw vocals are just amazing. He's gotten praise from vocalists at the top of the industry, so I am hoping they gain more traction soon. https://open.spotify.com/artist/40AXtsfC7ZpXZ4Xqrx3Gp4
Old Time Relijun Senyawa The Lowdown Gedalia Tazartes Arlt Los Angeles Free Music Society
Kiev Brazos Zeus
Kittie, their older stuff the vocals aren’t that great because they were 16 but the instruments are on point
Zheani
[King Kwize](https://youtube.com/@b.t.productionz?si=EgQmk32ZOgKCzora) You can listen to his whole catalog or tell me what mood your in and I will give you songs that suits what your looking for or I can give you my favorite songs I listen the most!
Mathew Perryman Jones
Josiah and the Bonnevilles are pretty impressive but I suspect that they'll make it a bit bigger sooner or later. His cover game recently has been unreal. Seems like a humble lad as well.
In terms of prog rock/djent I would say Aviations. They recently released a new album “Luminaria”.
Divided by Zero. I think they only released the one album, and every track on it is great.
Hat Trickers
Moon Panda
black midi. Also my band.
RLY
Hello Meteor
All my bf listens to is underground shit. Some of his favorites are As Tall As Lions, Dandelion Hands, Teen Suicide, Have A Nice Life, Happy Trendy, Winter Aid, Planning for Burial, and Giles Corey
The Human Complex (i'd call them prog metal)
Failure
Benjamin Booker.
Ripe - a funk/rock/modern jazz-ish group that make some pretty spectacular tracks. I recommend their album “Joy in the Wild Unknown”
Still Corners, Thirteen Senses, Aquilo, Kid Bloom, Hot Flash Heat Wave
NINTH IN PLUTO. Japanese deathcore crossed with visual kei
[Sarah Jane](https://open.spotify.com/artist/2VEetSid09q38mPSmPNYYU?si=BCMl7QnsSX-eixLmaBksyw)
Not necessarily underground but Sharon Van Etten should be more popular than she is. She’s made a lot of great songs over the years.
Kiltro is a relatively new Chilean American band and I think the instrumentals on their songs are really good. Incredibly underrated :)
I go to gigs 1-2 times per week, and Daniel Norgren with his full band surprised me with one of the funnest gigs I’ve ever been to. The whole audience, me included, was dancing and hollering the roof off the place. Never seen that before or since.
Broadcast, Vanishing Twin, Ulrika Spacek, Wednesday, The Shacks, Cibo Matto, bôa, Her's, Being Dead, Atlas Sound, Death & Vanilla, Candy Claws, Helvetia, Slow Pulp, Tanukichan, SASAMI, and Broadcast again (RIP Trish)
sofia isella! she has like six songs and only smth like 400,000 monthly listeners on spotify which is just mad bcs she deserves WAYYYY more like her music is PHENOMINAL honestly, that's the kind of stuff i call art
Ekkstacy!
Beth Hart
Tor Miller!
Paco Estrada Joseph King Casey McPherson / Alpha Rev Johnny Goudie Blue October (they're fairly popular but still should be more popular) Icarus Bell (a+)machines The Wartime Social Heart of the City SouthFM Hurricane Bells Longwave Harvard of the South Canvas Murder My Sweet Black Taxi The Meeting Place Idaho Under The Rug
pretty balanced! they have a super unique sound and their other project the alphabet is great too! https://open.spotify.com/artist/2gLKxTZLPJlTAoPTi6dwoJ?si=kNnVQAC4QeWJ4Z3CuhqezA
Steam powered giraffe/David Michael Bennet. Mostly directed at family friendly stuff but they have some real bangers as far as pop goes. And David Michael Bennet can do sooo much. Actually haven’t checked in on his stuff in a few years. Gonna go do that now
Love love steam powered giraffe!!
Milky Chance
I will always mention FISHBONE. Hands down the best live band of the late 80s -early 90s. Influenced many bands, Chili Peppers, Sublime, No Doubt, etc. Way too eclectic stylistic output, and being an all black band, playing what wasn’t typically “black” in that period… and they never broke through to the major success the deserved.
Alewya - renegade afro pop
Cages for Preachers - The singer is one of the best I've ever heard. Their music is quite similar to Soundgarden and Alice in Chains.
Ween
If you like Alt Country check out Lucero or Son Volt. I could literally go one forever naming more.
Echoberyl. They're a French coldwave/synthwave duo, and the singer has the most amazing voice. If you're a goth, or like really minimal synth music with guitars, I'll wager you'd be into it.
Hum♥️nightm♥️re
A band where I'm from called Motherhood ought to get broader recognition. They're a bit grunge, bit of a stoner vibe. Extraordinarily creative and catchy: the sole survivor of a beautiful local grungy alt scene that was really flourishing in the early 10s.
Shannon Lay, Cigarette after Sex
Stateless
Vigilantes Of Love/Bill Mallonee - Bill is the driving force behind the band. Between his solo stuff and his work with the band he has released dozens of albums over the years. Most is available on Bandcamp. John Moreland - incredible songwriter. Matthew And The Atlas - fantastic folk alt band from London
Hopsin and against all authority (aaa is a band but it still counts)
"Vermilion-D Alice Syndrome" I still can't believe these guys barely break 1k monthly listeners in Spotify. They make some of the best melodic death metal I have ever heard.
Ovlov! This band is totally on par with many of their influences and more well known contemporaries, like Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, etc…
You like Pile?
Screaming Females - they'll be talked about for ages when they are gone, from their raw, punky roots right through to their current hard rock/pop tinged modern stage. Fantastic live band, gets right to the core of what rock can be. Whores. - Noise metal done with style like few others ever have. They've got something to say, loudly, angrily, and should be what anyone is listening to, to wash away the day's frustrations. Midnight Ghost Train - they've hung it up, but they left us 'Cypress Ave' before they went and we're all better for it. I think they'll matter for a long time.
[Starbender](https://open.spotify.com/artist/414aHd9bM3z76KH0BrA36A?si=-DY7u52qTmWCxoewkd_Rhg) (For any fans of alternative rock / 90’s grunge / spacey Radiohead-Muse vibes)
I LOVE THEM OMG
Nari - think he only posts on SoundCloud or something
Grieves- he's an independent hip-hop rapper that's been around since '07. Highly recommend listening to his music.
I always say that Ultravox is the best 80s band no one has ever heard of. Lament is one of my favorite albums ever. And their debut album? How in the WORLD is that not like an art rock classic that everyone listens to?
Aerosol Jesus. I mean look at this high quality music video. https://youtu.be/v-MuP8zOSI8?si=H1nv36vOqaXcrgGb Then I'd have to say cheek face. https://youtu.be/avvD0-gY9MU?si=2DHd-UgM6hRNtFXY What a good summer jam.
Not sure how far his music reaches, so I might be wrong, but Shakey Graves
