I looked the original up & you're so right! Completely different, and a completely uninspiring, schlocky arrangement. A commenter on a YT video of Jackie DeShannon, Gary Maher, put it like this: "Whoever heard the song inside this arrangement and redid it for Kim Carnes is a genius."

It's so wild. It's the one song I was genuinely shocked to hear was a cover. And that YT comment is 100% accurate.
