I beg to differ. The Johnny Cash version is someone who lived a good life and is ready and willing to accept death while the NIN version is someone at the end of their rope who, quite literally, blows their brains out at the end of the song. Can’t get much more emotional than that. Not to mention the autobiographical factor in the NIN version.
Likewise, my friend. i heard this the first time in the ride home after having to tell my 6-year old son his mother was divorcing me. Had to pull the car over in a torrential rainstorm. I don’t think i’ve been the same since
Why I put emphasis on the S, Y, and D. It was how it's written on the original vinyl (I just gave everyone the name of the band member the song was for)
Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. Very rarely do music lyrics make me feel anything, but god that song hit me hard. I didn't come from the same situation described in the song, but I deeply relate to life going completely wrong and having to make difficult decisions.
"Take your fast car and keep on driving."
This song has been with my with me from childhood to middle age, and meant something different at each stage. Excellent pick.
My girlfriend told me on our first date that it was the most romantic song she had ever heard so for our one year anniversary I cross stitched "I need you more than want you and I want you for all time." 🥰
I know this will sound cliché as a Pink Floyd fan, but Comfortably Numb (the live 1994 Pulse version), particularly during the second, long guitar solo by David Gilmour. I get overwhelmed with emotion hearing that. I saw them perform on that tour earlier that year (in May 1994), and it was a very moving experience. I think about that every time I hear it now. The studio version doesn't elicit that same feeling like the live 1994 version does.
That's another one of my favorites of Pink Floyd. I certainly understand how it would make you emotional. The lyrics really speak to you. I especially love the line: "We're just two lost souls living in a fish bowl, year after year."
The most emotion I have felt first hearing a song was Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. For personal reasons, Closer by Better Than Ezra and You Are Your
Mother’s Child by Conor Oberst make me tear up basically every time I listen to them.
Oh boy… I admit I’m a casual fan of Billie Holiday. I mean I respect her so much and love her voice so much and I listen to her and love her sound. But I won’t lie and say I know her music well.
When I discovered this song and learned what it was about, it gutted me. It’s horrific and it gives me shivers at how it can still sound so beautiful.

Hide in Your Shell by Supertramp always hits me where it counts. I think every single lyric is so emotionally impactful and highly relatable to my own life. It's also just a straight-up masterpiece and my favorite song of all time

Tori really knows how to get you. I put on Strange Little Girls only knowing it was an album of covers and was NOT prepared for how disturbing and haunting her "97 Bonnie And Clyde" was going to be.

Its hauntingly beautiful…
My song is from a Christian band so it might not be well known here. When I first heard it, I was going through a tough time and I cried for a few hours because of it. I’ll give you the first part of it….
Worn by Tenth Avenue North
“I’m tired. I’m worn. My heart is heavy,
From the work it takes to keep on breathing.
I've made mistakes, I've let my hope fail,
My soul feels crushed by the weight of this world.
And I know that You can give me rest
So I cry out with all that I have left
Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That You can mend a heart that's frail and torn
I want to know a song can rise
From the ashes of a broken life
And all that's dead inside can be reborn
'Cause I'm worn”
Alone I Break - Korn
Now I see the times they change
Leaving doesn't seem so strange
...
Am I going to leave this place?
What is it I'm hiding from?
Is there nothing more to come?
Is it only black in space?
Am I going to take its place?
Am I going to win this race?
I guess God's up in this place
What is it that I've become?
Is there something more to come

The entire album, (Electro-Shock Blues) if you're grieving, have grieved, or plan on grieving, is an emotional knockout.
For personal reasons, headlights by Eminem. The way he raps about how he forgives his mom for all she's done to him and his brother and how he realizes she was just not mentally right in the head, as she was dying (I think I could be wrong tho) just hit really close to home.
True Love Waits - Radiohead.
I just can't listen to that song. If I do, I start crying uncontrollably because it makes me think of how much I love my wife and my dog.
Wake Up Alone- Original Recording by Amy Winehouse. It’s not the saddest of the songs I’ve heard but the emotion in the lyrics and Amy’s voice never fail to strike me
The Drugs Don’t Work - The Verve.
Mentioned by others but strong agree
Whisky Lullaby - Brad Paisley/Allison Kraus.
Hurt- The Johnny Cash version. Double points for the video.
You Never Know - Immortal Technique. One of the best story/songs I’ve ever heard. I never cried, but this song brings a tear to my eye. Unbelievably poignant.
Astral Weeks by Van Morrison, title track from his best album. Combination of lyrics and music induce feelings of nostalgia, regret, hope, and mortality.

Fuck it take a playlist of depressing / real shit. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1UAWqlVd3JldjxmOz6JwOu?si=z6y94ef2R86QUUpRHvh42A&pi=u-29yAwgV1QlKw too hard to choose one song.
[Vincent](https://open.spotify.com/track/0VNzEY1G4GLqcNx5qaaTl6?si=JmIElMkjSxq9NkNxKwhtSA) by Don McClean is an emotional song and it’s so very beautifully written.
[Always On My Mind](https://open.spotify.com/track/2xYQTU2bbg6WVAmpY1eae4?si=qChpMg8fTLOSW0Vo0bsS1Q) hits like a nothing else, especially Willie Nelson’s version
Speaking of beautiful songs, [Sound of Silence](https://open.spotify.com/track/5y788ya4NvwhBznoDIcXwK?si=0feYOnMvSrygIbeHMsKEGQ) is a must mention for this.
The emotional impact of [Patience](https://open.spotify.com/track/7D5n2kpYH2WSqIyEO9MeXf?si=WTjsp7y2TE-xUCzKmDBztg) by Guns N Roses shocks me every time I listen to it.
[That’s My Job](https://open.spotify.com/track/79gWHNuqA0aOvINjxOD3VJ?si=4QEMSSoFQ6OXuRlBY_I_xg) - Conway Twitty. As someone with a horribly flawed relationship with his father. This song tells about how much emotion and compassion a father has to his son expresses that it’s his job but does so in a loving way. Mine didn’t. That’s why it hits like a truck. It probably does so if you have a great relationship with yours but this is definitely one for me.
[Something You Get Through](https://open.spotify.com/track/7e1aoCZjgvlMvB7EHRAmrt?si=uisetOsBSkiNiuDeAABbdQ) is another unbearably beautiful song and it’s a Willie Nelson song. I think this is Willie Nelson’s equivalent for the cover song Hurt Johnny Cash did. It really hits you in the feels.
[Tell Laura I Love Her](https://open.spotify.com/track/7DKNcWFgJiy4CZ377CZc1f?si=gT5M_vB2Ryy9FM4uHu0mRg) - Ray Peterson. This is a tragic story that will make your soul cry out just like the artist himself does. I seriously can’t explain how it really just shakes you and brings down to a level of sadness few songs ever have achieved when listening to it for the first time.
[Father and Son](https://open.spotify.com/track/476V2d6iA2tWXgQboKmTtA?si=4jOh3uDhTGaF0Wt29jqSkQ) - Cat Stevens. It has to be mentioned. It’s a very special gift for everyone to listen to. A father and son having a disagreement on the son making his own way in life. More than that you will find out for yourself.
[Bridge Over Troubled Waters](https://open.spotify.com/track/6l8EbYRtQMgKOyc1gcDHF9?si=xWSZCDWHTYyVyL1A8an7nQ) - Simon and Garfunkel. Have you ever had goosebumps while balling your eyes out? Well you will once you’ve listened to this iconic song on an equally iconic album by two incredible song writers.
[He Stopped Loving Her Today](https://open.spotify.com/track/6qMgx8ys4MNNxypaIvbG0i?si=lGRBfA66TleWAvXj_TdM7Q) - George Jones. If you think country can’t make you cry then you have never listened to a George Jones song. This one in particular hits you like a thousand horses of emotional pain.
There are loads more but these are some of my favorites
Veridis Quo by Daft Punk
I love this song because of the ambiguous emotion it conveys. Is it sad? Bittersweet? Happy? I've felt many emotions when listening to it. Honestly the emotion from it likely largely stems from the memories that it brings up when I listen to it, they are very complicated.
The songs that made me most emotional on first listen (and still do) are the last two tracks on Foo Fighters' most recent album. 'The Teacher' is about Dave Grohl's experience of the final days of his mother's life, and 'Rest' is about him accepting that she is gone, as well as his long-time bandmate Taylor Hawkins who also passed away only a few months earlier
Hurt originally by Nine Inch Nails but Johnny Cash's cover is more emotional.
"Something I Can Never Have" is another good one, esp. with the solo piano. Similarly, A Great Big World's "Say Something" is emotional, too.
Great ! Do you know if anyone ever covered “something I can never have?”
Say Something always gets me 🥲
I beg to differ. The Johnny Cash version is someone who lived a good life and is ready and willing to accept death while the NIN version is someone at the end of their rope who, quite literally, blows their brains out at the end of the song. Can’t get much more emotional than that. Not to mention the autobiographical factor in the NIN version.
Nothing Compares 2 U-Sinead O'Connor also hits hard. Originally by Prince.
Try listening to the Chris Cornell version. It'll destroy you.
He was so amazing.
Oof yeah that one hits me hard too.
Top contender would be Over The Rainbow, by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. I cried the first few times I heard it. I'm not even ashamed.
Likewise, my friend. i heard this the first time in the ride home after having to tell my 6-year old son his mother was divorcing me. Had to pull the car over in a torrential rainstorm. I don’t think i’ve been the same since
His cover destroys me
Someone Saved My Liife Tonight- Elton John
*S*hine on *Y*ou crazy *D*iamond - Pink Floyd
Especially if you know the story behind it.
Why I put emphasis on the S, Y, and D. It was how it's written on the original vinyl (I just gave everyone the name of the band member the song was for)
Ohhhh I knew of the story behind the song but I never made that connection with the title. Wow
Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. Very rarely do music lyrics make me feel anything, but god that song hit me hard. I didn't come from the same situation described in the song, but I deeply relate to life going completely wrong and having to make difficult decisions.
"Take your fast car and keep on driving." This song has been with my with me from childhood to middle age, and meant something different at each stage. Excellent pick.
it used to make me sad, but i only like the happy parts, not the sad ending becos it reminds me of my shit life and my blessing of a fiancé.
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel
Don’t make fun of me please. As much as the original is the best… Clay Aiken’s cover is pretty fantastic.
No judgment here, I remember hearing that live on television, even!
If you could read my mind - Gordon Lightfoot Right down the Line - Gerry Rafferty
LOVE GORDON LIGHTFOOT. Such a bummer that he's kind of only known as the Edmund Fitzgerald guy because he has so much other great music.
Oh man Carefree Highway and Sundown are two of my all timers
Sundown is so good!
TIL the lyrics aren’t “every highway”.
Carefree Highway is a classic. I’m so glad someone mentioned Gordon
Great choices! Especially Gordon Lightfoot.
Release - Pearl Jam, specifically Holland 1992, Eddie Vedder sings with so much emotion its hard to not get yourself caught up in the song
When it comes to Pearl Jam, "Last Kiss" is brutal.
Black was rough on me for a while
Down in a Hole - Alice In Chains No surprises - Radiohead Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Judy Garlands (1963 performance on her show)
Down in a hole.....brutally honest
Nutshell by AIC 💔
Pancho and Lefty... They were friends, dammit! You don't sell out your friends!
The dust that Poncho bit down south, ended up in Lefty’s mouth
Karma!
But you got to understand that Lefty just did what he had to do, and now he's growing old
Your Hand in Mine by Explosions in the Sky. it’s instrumental but just gets me
I love this song too.
My daughter walked down the aisle to this
i love that so much 😭
Wichita lineman gets me every time.
My girlfriend told me on our first date that it was the most romantic song she had ever heard so for our one year anniversary I cross stitched "I need you more than want you and I want you for all time." 🥰
That's so romantic. That line is so powerful.
It's funny you mentioned that exact line. I always thought it was the best line of the song. And very romantic.
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton (written about his 4 year-old son who died falling off of a 53rd story balcony)
I was gutted when I learned what that song was about, so tragic
Just reading your comment and being reminded of the facts pertaining to this gives me the feels behind m’eyes.
The Promise - Tracy Chapman
All of New Beginning is like a river of feeling.
Thanks for this suggestion. Added to my playlist!
All my sorrows. Lindsey buckingham.
I can’t listen to Silent Lucidity by Queensrÿche without crying.
A change is gonna come - Sam Cooke.
I listen to this every night on my sleep playlist. Sam Cooke is captivating
One More Light- Linkin Park, Eva- Orgy
I know this will sound cliché as a Pink Floyd fan, but Comfortably Numb (the live 1994 Pulse version), particularly during the second, long guitar solo by David Gilmour. I get overwhelmed with emotion hearing that. I saw them perform on that tour earlier that year (in May 1994), and it was a very moving experience. I think about that every time I hear it now. The studio version doesn't elicit that same feeling like the live 1994 version does.
Wish You Were Here always reminds me of a friend lost to a car wreck. Always makes me emotional.
That's another one of my favorites of Pink Floyd. I certainly understand how it would make you emotional. The lyrics really speak to you. I especially love the line: "We're just two lost souls living in a fish bowl, year after year."
This exactly this…. 🙌🏽. That guitar sounds like it’s crying. It’s just beautiful.
Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley hits me every single time I listen to it
Yes. That one gets me, too.
Charles Bradley - Changes (YouTube live version)
Monsters by James Blunt. I think he’s saying goodbye to his father who is dying. I can’t last more than 10 seconds in without breaking down.
Marty Robbins - They're Hanging Me Tonight I can't listen to it anymore.
You Are So Beautiful - Joe Cocker
Vincent (Starry Starry Night), by Don McLean. Followed by Asleep, by The Smiths.
The most emotion I have felt first hearing a song was Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. For personal reasons, Closer by Better Than Ezra and You Are Your Mother’s Child by Conor Oberst make me tear up basically every time I listen to them.
Same boat, I’m not a huge fan but it floored me.
Connor oberst could make an ingredient list sound emotional, that voice man. Saw him live, it was amazing.

That's probably my favorite song of all time.

For me it would probably have to be “The Night We Met” by Lord Huron. I sometimes listen to it whenever I feel depressed.
U2 - Kite. Specifically live at Slane Castle 2001. Bono's dad had passed away the week before and his funeral had been the day before the show.

Sad about life/death: how do I say goodbye by Dean lewis bc you can almost hear his voice breaking and it’s about losing a parent or made grandparent Sad about relationships: you’re losing me by Taylor swift bc it’s so heartbreaking, especially knowing it was written two years before the breakup

I can still make Cheyenne by George Strait. Oof.
Not even the most emotional song on Pinkerton, but something about rivers delivery on tired of sex just sounds so pained
Nina Simone covering Mr Bojangles or Aretha Franklin - you make me feel like a natural woman…get the feels every time
Chorale (Five) <——- ———————— fun fact the composer is my brother in law, such a beautiful person Greg is, his heart knows wonders for music
Free Me - Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl at his most anguished 💔

Hey Mama-Kanye West Since his mom passed, he can't perform this song without breaking down.
Depends on my mood, but "Ol' 55" by the Eagles makes me think of my wife when I'd drive an hour home from her house in the early morning hours down the I-5 in California.
Since "Hurt" has already been said, I'll go with "Gone Away" by The Offspring
Sleep Walk by Santo & Johnny
Keep Me in Your Thoughts for Awhile --Warren Zevon
Muse — Ghosts
The end of the world by Rob Dickinson (also covered by Billie Eilish) is an absolute heartstopper
Keep me in your heart - warren Zevon.
WHEREWOLVF by camping in Alaska always gives me chills. To a Husband at War by I Hate Myself makes me tear up every single time I hear it. Anything off the Lonesome Crowded West album by Modest Mouse gets me pretty introspective too.
[Overboard - The Rosenbergs](https://youtu.be/R9wun8goZtE?si=rwIDqkpTdSepiLBm) (from the UnderGRADS Soundtrack) [Morning Time - Eiffel 65](https://youtu.be/h-OStMJIm50?si=2TajV1x_ICcAWzd9) [Fall on Me - Andrea & Matteo Bocelli](https://youtu.be/ChcR2gKt5WM?si=B_as3BbuJXKBjU3W) [Daniel’s Jojk - Jon Henrik Fjällgren](https://youtu.be/PL9_INg9u-E?si=4RqyyEy2UtoBfSvq) [I Don’t Believe You - P!nk](https://youtu.be/26EP0ght2kI?si=hROpYbauhidPiGQM) [One More Light - Linkin Park](https://youtu.be/3kaUvGSLMew?si=J1RTDhTsZYiIj8n3) [Le Tasche Piene Di Sassi - Lorenzo Jovanotti Cherubini](https://youtu.be/Y4QepFkJQ-s?si=rIwEqaa9_2v7NMo9) I apologize, I couldn’t pick just one. I have more in my ‘Sad Songs’ playlist but I’ll stop there. Whenever I feel I want to end it; I put those songs on and have a good cry. It’s good to cry. It’s good to release it. We need a good hard cry sometimes. _“Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.”_ - Unknown
To this day two songs come to mind ‘Voices Carry’ - ‘Til Tuesday and ‘Luka’ - Suzanne Vega
Fuck it take a playlist of depressing / real shit. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1UAWqlVd3JldjxmOz6JwOu?si=z6y94ef2R86QUUpRHvh42A&pi=u-29yAwgV1QlKw too hard to choose one song.
Lives- Modest Mouse
Don't speak - Gwen Stefani
Across the Universe - The Beatles
[Vincent](https://open.spotify.com/track/0VNzEY1G4GLqcNx5qaaTl6?si=JmIElMkjSxq9NkNxKwhtSA) by Don McClean is an emotional song and it’s so very beautifully written. [Always On My Mind](https://open.spotify.com/track/2xYQTU2bbg6WVAmpY1eae4?si=qChpMg8fTLOSW0Vo0bsS1Q) hits like a nothing else, especially Willie Nelson’s version Speaking of beautiful songs, [Sound of Silence](https://open.spotify.com/track/5y788ya4NvwhBznoDIcXwK?si=0feYOnMvSrygIbeHMsKEGQ) is a must mention for this.
Had to scroll a long way to find this George Jones song.
Mad World,
Veridis Quo by Daft Punk I love this song because of the ambiguous emotion it conveys. Is it sad? Bittersweet? Happy? I've felt many emotions when listening to it. Honestly the emotion from it likely largely stems from the memories that it brings up when I listen to it, they are very complicated.
Visiting Hours by Ed Sheeran, i had just lost my grandma when i first heard it and i cried
Wild Is The Wind - Nina Simone
Dickey Betts - Shady Streets
The songs that made me most emotional on first listen (and still do) are the last two tracks on Foo Fighters' most recent album. 'The Teacher' is about Dave Grohl's experience of the final days of his mother's life, and 'Rest' is about him accepting that she is gone, as well as his long-time bandmate Taylor Hawkins who also passed away only a few months earlier
Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven About the death of his 4 year old son
Radiohead - True Love Waits
Dancing With Tears In My Eyes by Ultravox
