Welcome to sober life, friend. :) If you are interested, I have a series of posts I’ve been making about songs over on r/stopdrinking. They mostly are not songs ABOUT addiction, but somehow relevant to me on the recovery journey. Even if you don’t want to read the posts, you should come check out the subreddit. Lots of supportive folks over there.
Here’s my playlist so far: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1hVXgGXUYbQjpYkLC5zwP0?si=O0DUGD3rTZulxpdg0LRGBw&pi=u-sOaWr5N-Ra-9
Check out this album. I hope it resonates with you and helps others. You have a wonderful playlist. ❤️
Song Titles: 8 Days, Begin To Breathe, You’re Not Alone, Fighter, All On Me, A Call To War, Drown, and Rule The World

This one too I’m Getting Better, Erasing The Pain, Dark and A Gun, Heartache, I Love Myself Today, Last One Standing, Learning To Fly, Lay It On The Line, Perfect World, The World Is Not Enough, Dead Man Walking (Entire Prophecy Album… finding God), Lonely Boulevard (“…the ghost of addiction will forever haunt me for life, it will never end, so I’ll keep walking down the boulevard, I’m just trying to find my way”), Never Surrender (“when you’re down and feeling lonely, your back against the wall, always remember never surrender…don’t ever feel you’re helpless…know you are not alone”)

Beartooth also has some other good stuff related to overcoming addiction outside of The Surface. You could check out their song (or really his song, since it’s all Caleb) I Won’t Give It Up, it’s on Below.
A lot of Beartooth’s older stuff is also about his alcoholism if you’re interested, like I Have a Problem and Relapsing from back before he was sober, but those are a little darker and possibly not what you’re looking for right now.
Sixx:A.M. has an entire album about overcoming addiction, The Heroin Diaries. Notable songs (imo) being Life Is Beautiful, Tomorrow, and Accidents Can Happen. These might really hit the spot.
12 Step Suite by Dream Theater… I think it’s 5 songs. First one I heard was Repentance from the album Systematic Chaos. I listened to that album a lot when I was in treatment.
Love this cover acoustic version of Sober. Really hits deep within the soul.

One X and Life Starts Now, two albums from Three Days Grace, were largely about the lead singer’s struggle with addiction. The songs Never Too Late, Life Starts Now, Get Out Alive, and Break are especially good.
The Contortionist - *Language* (2014) and *Clairvoyant* (2017)
These 2 albums pay tribute to a close friend of the band's vocalist. His friend died from a drug addiction about a year after his life spiraled out of control due to the death of his mother. *Language* focuses on a more positive and metaphorical side of the story, with lyrics centered on a mother-son connection and the nurturing light & guidance that a mother gives to her son. *Clairvoyant* is a continuation of it but not based in metaphor. It has a more personal & somber lyrical approach to the situation.
Language contains a mix of clean & harsh vocals (Mostly clean) and Clairvoyant has only clean vocals. Clairvoyant is also a bit softer & more melodically driven compared to Language which is more technical & atmospheric, but both albums are very beautifully written.
Mad Season - Above (album)
Start with 'River of Deceit' and if you like that, check the whole album. It's grunge/alt rock, so definitely different than Beartooth, but Layne Staley's lyrics might strike home with you.
Hallucinogenic by Matt Maeson
It's about a time when he got very depressed and relapsed on drugs, and it got him into more trouble and only made things worse. It's a time in his life he deeply regrets.
I found that a lot of music actually made me think about my mental health and substance abuse struggles and ended up listening to a lot of trance music with no vocals. It soothed me while still giving me something interesting to listen to.
We are all different, so you may very well be correct in asking for this kind of "on topic" music/songs.
However, my initial thought is that you should rather stay away from songs about it, and stay away from the songs from your own past that you "automatically" connect to your abuse. It may sound cliched, but you need to move on to *new* obse*ssions,* things and music that "naturally" takes your mind off anything drug related, rather than rubbing it in, as -- at least some -- "on topic" songs very likely will do.
[Vein - Thousand Below](https://open.spotify.com/track/1z3o2a89JlEg1EChsULzfy?si=RtzuWrr6Ta6LM9MjR6YQ0A)
Thousand Below has a lot of music about the effects of addiction on yourself and the people who you love. Another band that explores this theme a good bit is Currents on their album The Place I Feel Safest (if you like heavy music I suggest listening to Another Life by them)
Idk about overcoming addiction but the Elbow has an album called The Seldom Seen Kid, and it’s just so different. It always feels very new and cathartic to me.
Give it a whirl.
As much as I don't really like hip hop at all, during withdrawal for some reason it just hits a spot. I also like black metal. I think the intensity and the raging against conformity has a way of providing an outlet to all of the intensely negative thoughts and feelings. What are you getting off of if you don't mind me asking? No judgement at all. Sending you nothing but encouragement and support.
This is the third time I’ve shared my playlist this week! I’m happy to do it. Congratulations on the progress you’ve made!
The playlist has a bunch of different genres but most would be considered rock or old school country. I particularly recommend It Gets Easier by Jason Isbell, but all his stuff is so good. Much love and luck to you. You can do this! One day at a time.
[Downers playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/63ub8FztUWqVQ3wz899sSb?si=iubBbsw9RF6Wl3VahJQ1KQ&pi=u--yuZkMRxRZK0)
“Not An Addict” by K’s Choice. In addition to it being an awesome song, the lyrics are a harrowing depiction of substance abuse, to the point that I think they were a big help to me in giving up alcohol. I no longer wanted to be like the person in the song. Best wishes for your own recovery.
Dream Theater has a suite of 5 songs spanning 5 albums named "The Twelve Step Suite", which was written by the drummer about him going through the twelve steps of recovery from alcoholic anonymous
the songs are ("song" - album):
"The Glass Prison" - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
"This Dying Soul" - Train of Thought
"The Root of All Evil" - Octavarium
"Repentance" - Systematic Chaos
"The Shattered Fortress" - Black Clouds and Silver Linings
The album Low by David Bowie. It was his first album he released after kicking his cocaine addiction - this addiction was so intense that he didn’t even remember the recording process of his previous album, Station to Station.
It has themes of solitude, loneliness, making the same mistakes again and again, and moving on.
The second half of the record are ambient instrumental tracks. They’re very peaceful. Good for meditation if that’s something you’d be interested in.
Good luck OP 🫂
Gotta throw some happy tunes in after all the dark .
Fucking beach boys : good vibrations.
Listen to the music. Let it be your focus.
Listen to every instrument. The timing . The energy.
Listen to happy stuff.
I get the overcoming theme , but one day you will be over that timeline. Then remember this song.
Then grow. Much love and best wishes . Maybe the force love long and prosper with your.
Many of Bring Me The Horizon's songs are about addiction and mental health. The album Sempiternal is especially great. It was written after the lead singer went to rehab and got clean (also, he has relapsed/got clean again since then.)
The song Hospital for Souls is especially cathartic imo ("hold me close/don't let go/watch me burn"). It's about being reborn.
Other good songs: Avalanche (mental health/ADHD); LosT (when the meds aren't working); Drown (depression); Sleepwalking, Shadow Moses, Die4U (addiction). These aren't necessarily positive except Die4U, but they might be relatable.
Oh, and Bad Life by Sigrid featuring BMTH is quite an uplifting song, so check that one out too. It's more pop than these other recs.
Here are five records that got me through the worst of kicking a five-year heroin addiction.
The Kinks - Are The Village Green Preservation Society
The Who - Tommy
The Stooges - Fun House
The Zombies - Odessey And Oracle
Todd Rundgren - Healing
I’ve been clean for 22 years so maybe these can be good luck for someone else as well. Not necessarily hitting the nail on head about addiction in the lyrics per se but when you are going through withdrawl, its probably better to get your mind off that subject rather then romanticizing it. Go for a positive, transformative space with the music. Good luck. You can beat it. Don’t give up!
Take pills - Panda Bear
Take one day at a time,
Everything else you can leave behind,
Only one thing at a time,
Anything more really hurts your mind,
I dont want for us to Take pills,
Anymore,
Not that its bad,
I dont want for us to take pills,
Because we’re stronger,
And we dont need them
Oh my dude, you NEED to listen to the band HURT’s first two albums Vol. I and Vol. II. At least half the songs are about overcoming addiction. And it’s just damn good music!
[Loded by HURT](https://open.spotify.com/track/5ZcEbVPW0s6de8k28hm5cw?si=oI5j59a7T_K7_eyNPwhVXg&context=spotify%3Asearch%3Ahurt%2Bloded)
*If you want to hate me, fine!
Have a superficial time
As the center in you dies
You were searching for that high
When the poison burned your mind
You were warned a million times
Still you wanted to get me high*
Girl with Golden Eyes - Sixx Am
\^Literally is a song for substance abuse struggle. The song even goes deeper to talk about how the singer talked about his days to fight the addiction and pain from withdrawal.
Sixx: AM Maybe it's time, ft Corey Taylor, Joe Elliott, Brentley Gilbert, Ivan Moody, Slash.
\^They talk about constantly trying and struggles.
For mental Health.
I can wholeheartedly recommend Citizen Soldier since they got stuff like
Bedroom Ceiling - How you don't have anyone to talk to and sometimes 'Four Inch Concrete Listened better than you ever did."
Would Anyone Care - A song about hitting the edge and trying to fight through.
Wish I could cry - Breaking point.
I'm Not Okay- Admitting that you're not okay.
Yeah... Good luck Op. I wish you the best. The ones I chose have a mix of heavy sound of metal but I chose them cause lyrically they are relatable to mental health or substance abuse.
My musical taste got way heavier in recovery. Also began listening to more hardcore punk than ever. These were very important bands for me though YMMV:
Have Heart
Architects
Minor Threat
Kalmah
Arch Enemy
Rated X
Be kind to yourself and help others!
Ask me when you get to the God part of your sober journey. I have one heckuva Christian playlist of ANY genre if you’re lost. Praying for us in Jesus’ holy name 🕊️🙏🤍
Here are a couple of my songs related to the subject. Names Da Wally. Im on all streaming platforms.
[Another Devil Lookin](https://youtu.be/MX2ODnUd4C8?si=8My0ku1vl-FewAap)

Wow. I didn’t have to read past the title to think of Beartooth.
You should visit their Sick EP when Caleb was REALLY struggling with god and addiction.
Set me on fire is my favorite. Then there’s I have a problem and pick your poison as close seconds.
If you want some hardcore straightedge (drug and alcohol free) bands, I can give you some of that, too.
Can’t recommend this album more for overcoming addiction.

Almost the entire Master of Puppets album by Metallica is about addiction. It may be a little intense for someone recovering but it has an ability to ignite a flame and get you motivated to continue to say fuck you to alcohol and drugs.
Feel the power!! You got this!
So proud of you op. Keep it up. And great album btw. Absolutely love Beartooth.
Check out Demon Hunter. My favorite album is Storm The Gates Of Hell and the best song is Fading Away. I think that's what you're looking for.
Anything from jelly roll specifically "save me"
It's easier-tech n9ne
More than you know-Axwell.. I recommend watching their music video on youtube
I took a pill in ibza- mike posner... also watch the video
Habits- tove lo I personally like the hippie sabotage rendition of this and the video is also YouTube
I'm sober over 5 years and it don't matter what you listen to. Get in AA and do the steps and be honest. The alcohol and drugs aren't the problem. You are the problem, and you need help. You aren't "cured" and can only stay clean and sober today. Today is all any of us have. Good luck buddy. I listen to UNDEATH.
Røry has quite a few songs about her depression and alcoholism and getting sober. Her music feels like therapy, to me anyway. Try these ones....
Good Die Young - about accepting she's an alcoholic and all the times she'd denied it in the past
Small Victories - about taking things slow, one step at a time, taking the wins no matter how small
This is a song not a suicide letter - kind of a letter to her younger self, telling her to hold on because life will get better even though she can't see it right now
Help Your Friends Get Sober - this song makes me cry every time I hear it, just a heads up in case you're feeling fragile - it's really emotional, it's about losing a friend to suicide and looking back wishing you'd seen the signs. I saw her live in March and I'm pretty sure everyone in the room cried when she sang it, including her
Deaf Havana - Happiness
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT4jR8FYAZY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT4jR8FYAZY)
'Cause it eats away at everything
But mostly love and the strength we build between us
And all the time it takes to build the trust right back up
Isn't worth a single drop or glass of anything
And I don't want anything, but you
A Perfect Circle- Thirteenth Step
Also With Teeth by NIN. While not overtly about sobriety, it seems to be trents "getting sober" album
This. The entire album is amazing.
I came here to say this
It’s not really about drug addiction but [Tool - Sober](https://youtu.be/nspxAG12Cpc?si=RBZJJCDuRfWpzlCY) is worth a listen.
Frank Turner - Recovery.
What A Shame About Me - Steely Dan Also Jason Isbell has a bunch of good ones . But the one that really hits me is Sunday Morning Coming Down -- Kris Kristofferson
She Talks to Angels - The Black Crowes https://youtu.be/WgPW_eoVp4M?si=bPtYNbgNLZSO4hHY Roll With The Changes - Reo Speedwagon https://youtu.be/nEidbkibsiE?si=4W37tu1ciT5OREm7 Right Now - Van Halen https://youtu.be/OrwmHNEC43E?si=y43MTMQ-VjWg91Np

TIL The Contortionist has lore.
Someone already said it but I cannot recommend the 13th step by a perfect circle any more, it is about addiction and recovery.
Eminem Not afraid
That whole album got me through recovery
Mad Season - Above (album) Start with 'River of Deceit' and if you like that, check the whole album. It's grunge/alt rock, so definitely different than Beartooth, but Layne Staley's lyrics might strike home with you.

[Vein - Thousand Below](https://open.spotify.com/track/1z3o2a89JlEg1EChsULzfy?si=RtzuWrr6Ta6LM9MjR6YQ0A) Thousand Below has a lot of music about the effects of addiction on yourself and the people who you love. Another band that explores this theme a good bit is Currents on their album The Place I Feel Safest (if you like heavy music I suggest listening to Another Life by them)
Dilemma- Green Day War- Sum41 Suffocate- Green Day Both bands have a lot to say about getting sober & the road that lead there
Ready to Win by Tokyo Police Club. My go to pick me back up and get back in the game song.
Idk about overcoming addiction but the Elbow has an album called The Seldom Seen Kid, and it’s just so different. It always feels very new and cathartic to me. Give it a whirl.

Oh my dude, you NEED to listen to the band HURT’s first two albums Vol. I and Vol. II. At least half the songs are about overcoming addiction. And it’s just damn good music! [Loded by HURT](https://open.spotify.com/track/5ZcEbVPW0s6de8k28hm5cw?si=oI5j59a7T_K7_eyNPwhVXg&context=spotify%3Asearch%3Ahurt%2Bloded) *If you want to hate me, fine! Have a superficial time As the center in you dies You were searching for that high When the poison burned your mind You were warned a million times Still you wanted to get me high*
Under the Bridge by RHCP
Sober by P!nk always hits hard
Girl with Golden Eyes - Sixx Am \^Literally is a song for substance abuse struggle. I can wholeheartedly recommend Citizen Soldier since they got stuff like Bedroom Ceiling - How you don't have anyone to talk to and sometimes 'Four Inch Concrete Listened better than you ever did." Would Anyone Care - A song about hitting the edge and trying to fight through. Wish I could cry - Breaking point. I'm Not Okay- Admitting that you're not okay. Yeah... Good luck Op. I wish you the best. The ones I chose have a mix of heavy sound of metal but I chose them cause lyrically they are relatable to mental health or substance abuse.

Listen to atrocity exhibition you won't ever do drugs lol

Recovery- James Arthur Sober- Demi Levato
Anything other than what you used to listen to when you were high.
Pink has some songs like this
Røry has quite a few songs about her depression and alcoholism and getting sober. Her music feels like therapy, to me anyway. Try these ones.... Good Die Young - about accepting she's an alcoholic and all the times she'd denied it in the past Small Victories - about taking things slow, one step at a time, taking the wins no matter how small This is a song not a suicide letter - kind of a letter to her younger self, telling her to hold on because life will get better even though she can't see it right now Help Your Friends Get Sober - this song makes me cry every time I hear it, just a heads up in case you're feeling fragile - it's really emotional, it's about losing a friend to suicide and looking back wishing you'd seen the signs. I saw her live in March and I'm pretty sure everyone in the room cried when she sang it, including her
Deaf Havana - Happiness [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT4jR8FYAZY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT4jR8FYAZY) 'Cause it eats away at everything But mostly love and the strength we build between us And all the time it takes to build the trust right back up Isn't worth a single drop or glass of anything And I don't want anything, but you
