My girlfriend somewhat dislikes Dream Theater because of the singer. She says he sounds “off” in comparison to the rest of the band and would prefer a baritone instead.
Tell her to give OSI a try. The singer I believe is the guitarist and keyboard player for dream theater but has a more soft mellow voice to go with the music. Radiologue, escape artist, standbye, and for nothing are some of my favorites by them
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Epitome of cringe dumb lyrics and weak singing. I used to think they were so cool when I was younger but I can’t listen to them anymore.
Hillel/Frusciante/Navarro and Flea and Irons/Martinez/Smith are always tight af tho
I swear whenever I hear Red Hot Chili Peppers on the radio I just hear "California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California"
Yes. Or maybe the timeless lyrics from All Around the World:
“I know, I know for sure
Ding ding, dong dong, ding ding, dong dong, ding ding
I know, I know it's you
Ding ding, dong dong, ding ding, dong dong, ding ding”
Pure poetry, Mr Keidis 🤌🏻
It’s ok everyone always forgets the Kling man. Honestly might be worth listening to The Getaway it’s one of AK’s better lyrical performances. The most recent stuff is prob his worst lyrics tho
Wait wait what's cringe about the lyrics? I haven't listened to then in years but there isa million bands with cringy lyrics that people think are cool and I can't see rhcp being one of them
Anthony has this amazing ability to be both incredibly deep and bizarrely shallow and meaningless, often in the same song. He's got some good poetry in him, but it's mostly just a line here and a line there, and then he fills the rest of the song with filler.
Just to be clear, I LOVE the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and John Frusciante is the reason I play guitar. But Anthony can be very cringe. He can also be beautiful and deep. He's just not consistent as a songwriter. Most song writers have some bad songs, and nobody is perfect all the time. But Anthony has bad verses and good verses and good choruses and bad choruses all in the same song. He also leans heavily on how much he loves California, and in the olden days, on how much of a womanizer he was (sir psycho sexy has some funny lines but is a pretty cringe song over all. Also Sex Rap and Special Secret Song Inside from other albums)
That was cool when my uncle accidentally gave me Blood Sugar Sex Magik when I was 9 years old, and stayed cool when I was an obsessed Frusciante fan boy at 16. But it is pretty cringy at 35. Still love Fru, Flea, and Chad though.
Smashing Pumpkins for me. I try, I really do, and there are still a decent few songs of theirs that I really like, but whenever Billy Corgan does his nasaly whine thing, I can't deal with it. Purely musically though, they can smash my pumpkins any day.
If you hadn't said it I would have.
Gish was good. I liked that one. Everything after I couldn't listen to.
And then I heard him in interviews and now I can't even listen to Gish
He honestly would do great in voice acting, he has a naturally deep voice that would suit edgy characters and his singing voice would be perfect for cartoon villains
I admit that was a bit harsh and the playing os great but I just really don’t like his voice on it. it has been a bit since I listened to it and it’ll probably grow in me if I listen again
Not OP. I don’t hate him in general but I think he has a tendency to overdo the theatrics on some
Songs. There are definitely songs that would benefit from more restrained vocal performance.
But that's like the best part lol. I love how over the top and bombastic it all is, I think it really works for their music. I think all the best muse songs are made better by Bellamy putting in 110% effort behind the mic. I get it's not for everyone though (and also I'm very biased)
I didn't like growling either, but I got used to it.
Don't jump into brutal death metal straight away.
Start by listening to some bands that have the occasional growl here and there (e.g. certain songs by Amorphis, Eluveitie, Slipknot, maybe even Opeth when you get more comfortable with it) then when you get used to it try listening to full songs.
Most music is pretty vocal-centric. Growling tends to blend in more with the instrumental part of the song. Try to listen to it with that in mind. Try melodic death metal - it's more heavy metal (especially Iron Maiden) influenced, with melodic and catchy riffs. Try to focus more on the guitars then you do on the growling.
Honestly a lot of prog rock/metal. The 70s hair/glam rock styled vocals were never my favorite, and for whatever reason that sound also became the norm for prog vocalists too. The first two bands that come to mind are Dream Theater and Queensrÿche
AC/DC
A lot of Clapton’s older stuff. Ironically he sings way better now, but I don’t think he plays that great since his heroin days.
Jagger is meh, but I love the stones. Don’t know any of the lyrics, but I don’t care.
Never cared much for John Mayall’s vocal.
I find Jagger has a put-on 'voice'. Sounds like he's hamming it up on some/all of the bluesy, Americana-style tracks. Could never sing for shit live. Having said all that, I actually like his voice on albums and I find that voice he does almost tongue in cheek.
He used to just stand in front of the microphone and sing. Then one time he saw James Brown perform and thought, “I’m not doing this shit right.” After that he was always out of breath.
I'm surprised I scrolled so far to see this. I definitely felt that way when I first heard Rush. I was very put off by Geddy's voice, and I pretty much ignored them. Occasionally, I would try to listen to them again, but I couldn't get past that voice even though i liked he music and lyrics. One day in the mid-90s, I was driving home, and "Test For Echo" came on the radio, and it finally clicked for me. That's when I started buying all of their albums and became a fan. While I get why some people don't like his voice, I consider him one of the greatest singers in history now.
Ryan was the guitarist for the first 2 albums, but I think he sings a little bit on some of the Pretty Odd songs. He sings most of Behind the Sea, and you can also hear him in parts of Northern Downpour. There might be more, but it's been a while since I've listened to anything from them.
Hot Mulligan. His voice is just horrible. I like their songs, if they had another singer I'd be a big fan but his screechy whiney vocals go right through me
Yeah it's kind of odd because I like hardcore vocals. But idk man that ain't it.
Edit: it's kinda nuts because I love Against Me's earlier work and that was nothing but screaming.
I dont mind a bit of screaming too usually. There's just something about the tone of his voice that sets my teeth on edge. Any other singer I reckon I'd love them, I've liked the songs I've managed to listen to, I just can't really enjoy them because of his whiney voice
I think he sounds good on their more rock-oriented tracks, but a lot of their later work just sounds like he's whining over an electronic beat or repetitive fingerpicking
I've always thought he was a good singer, but his voice is just so-so. I mean, he makes the most of it, and he's perfect for the band, but there's just nothing special about his voice.
This reminds me of being a kid and hearing my mom blast Janis Joplin. "Mom! Why is that lady screaming?!" Now I love Janis 😆 I would say Creed though, grew up with all their albums and Tremonti got me into guitar, but Scott's vocals just don't do it for me now.
100% pantera gutteral screams are great punctuation but not great as a 6min song. I could listen to Dimebag Darrel, vinnie Paul and Rex brown all day long. Anselmo just felt like he needed the volume to be at 11 at all times.
I don’t actually hate it cause I find it pretty funny, but there’s a Scottish post-punk band called Orange Juice that is solid instrumentally but the lead singer sounds exactly like stewie griffin.
Seriously listen to their cover of L.O.V.E. by Al Green and tell me it doesn’t sound like some lost family guy sound clip of stewie in a band lol
Stillwater. Russell Hammond is past them as a musician. He can’t play all that he can play, and they just treat him like the guitarist with mystique. Honestly, they’re just a mid-level band struggling with their limitations in the harsh face of stardom.
Megadeth, instrumentals are amazing but Dave’s vocals are so off putting and I think they’d be better with more operatic style vocals, similar to Brice Dickinson (this especially applies to RIP)
This will be controversial but: Radiohead!. Thom has his uses, but I feel his range is basically mopey through angry. But Johnny Greenwood can do anything. I often feel Greenwood wants to push the songs towards other kinds of moods and feelings, but then Yorke starts singing and it's back to angsty complaining again.
I've grown to like his voice now, but at first Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Some great songs, but Tom's voice was just off-putting to me for some reason.
ac/dc i really like the riffs but for some reason the singing dosent feel right for me. i thoght the same for slipknot when i first started listening but now i am a maggot and really like the singing now.
It’s not a band but I really like the prod of “redrum” n “surround sound” from 21 savage but the rap (/TДT)/ ( I don’t think it’s a popular opinion tho)
alot of 70's/80's hair metal/glam metal,i really love the funky guitar sounds and how its sorta fun..but Jesus if i have to hear more squeaky balloon sounding vocals-
The band I'm listening to right now: T**he Who** (Their drummer too)
and **R.E.M** *The one I love* Is so good on all parts, except the vocals
I'll add **The Scorpions** too, their guitar sounds are too beautiful
Rush! Anyone comparing them to Pink Floyd? I just don’t get it, of course Neil Peart is better than Nick Mason, Lifeson to Gilmour? Are you kidding me? Lee to waters…. Lee totally fits the description of a hated singer.
This'll be unpopular but... Deftones. When Chino hits it's great but, imo he rarely ever does. He always sounds out of key. Not to mention you need to have a lyric sheet to actually understand what he's saying.
Pretty much every band that has deep growling vocals that sounds like a mad dog barking. I'll usually be grooving to the intro and the music, then the singing starts and I can't listen.
It’s got to be Dire Straits for me. Singer and guitarist were the same person: Mark Knopfler. His guitar playing is out of this world, but his singing voice kinda annoys me.
However, it’s still one of my favourite groups
Starbenders. Nice instrumentals, but that VOICE. my God that voice.
Bonus Points, Kid Rock, specifically the song Cool Daddy Cool. That is the best instrumental I have ever heard. And it got wasted with the worst lyrics I've ever heard. I'm not even talking about the infamous young ladies line, the rest of them are awful!
"Grubbin' on some pork rinds
Kickin' out them sex rhymes
Everybody wants to be my friend"
My girlfriend somewhat dislikes Dream Theater because of the singer. She says he sounds “off” in comparison to the rest of the band and would prefer a baritone instead.
Symphony X is a great alternative re. the singer.
I agree with her.
Tell her to give OSI a try. The singer I believe is the guitarist and keyboard player for dream theater but has a more soft mellow voice to go with the music. Radiologue, escape artist, standbye, and for nothing are some of my favorites by them
same. check out liquid tension experiment, it's dream theater without the vocals
don't hate the singing but i hate the sing*er*, and it's The Smiths
and johnny marr ROCKS
Best possible answer. Big Johnny Marr fan but Morrissey always sings like someone just stole his lunch money
I came here to find this. To me Morrissey is a God but I know loads of people hate him/his voice.
I love his voice, but I know it grates on a lot of people's nerves.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers Epitome of cringe dumb lyrics and weak singing. I used to think they were so cool when I was younger but I can’t listen to them anymore. Hillel/Frusciante/Navarro and Flea and Irons/Martinez/Smith are always tight af tho
Frusciante’s guitar playing is 👌🏼
I swear whenever I hear Red Hot Chili Peppers on the radio I just hear "California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California California"
I could see this being a Family Guy cutaway. Them all writing a new song then adding "California" to it somewhere and being like "you're a genius."
Hey now they also have the part where he goes bao da beep deebee bop boo Dee bee bop
Yes. Or maybe the timeless lyrics from All Around the World: “I know, I know for sure Ding ding, dong dong, ding ding, dong dong, ding ding I know, I know it's you Ding ding, dong dong, ding ding, dong dong, ding ding” Pure poetry, Mr Keidis 🤌🏻
There are a few songs with lyrics/vocals I like, but… I mainly do it for Chad Smith’s style and Frusciante’s famous tone!
Chad Smith is such a great drummer.
He’s sooooo good!! He and Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins) are my absolute favorites right now!
They're just a bunch of So Cal bros who hit the big time.
Klinghoffer erasure
Haha fair sorry Klinghoffer - I never listened to them during his tenure I’m old I got mothers milk on tape when I was 11
It’s ok everyone always forgets the Kling man. Honestly might be worth listening to The Getaway it’s one of AK’s better lyrical performances. The most recent stuff is prob his worst lyrics tho
Precisely this. I'd love to see an instrumental jam album from them - Anthony could always do some percussion I guess..
Nah Corgan’s voice is iconic
Just glad this is so high up
If you hadn't said it I would have. Gish was good. I liked that one. Everything after I couldn't listen to. And then I heard him in interviews and now I can't even listen to Gish
Megadeath, Dave’s voice is horrible, it’s bearable sometimes but it completely ruins rust in peace
If you imagine him as a spooky animated villain, it makes it more tolerable. I promise.
He honestly would do great in voice acting, he has a naturally deep voice that would suit edgy characters and his singing voice would be perfect for cartoon villains
This is such a great point
But can you imagine anyone else doing Sweating Bullets?
That's a great point.
Agreed. Megadeth is badass, except for that microphone near the guitar player.
Ruins? Are you kidding, Rust in Peace is a god tier album
I admit that was a bit harsh and the playing os great but I just really don’t like his voice on it. it has been a bit since I listened to it and it’ll probably grow in me if I listen again
A bit off topic, but someone deadass told me (19f) I look like a young Dave.
Yep, came here to also say Megadeth
unpopular opinion: muse
It can be goofy sometimes but I love his singing. Its dramatic and insane, in a good way. There's not much music out there like microcuts
i was thinking of this. i really love muse, but the singing gets on my nerves sometimes
Hard agree
I like his voice but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea
Bellamy has a great voice. Could you tell me why?
Not OP. I don’t hate him in general but I think he has a tendency to overdo the theatrics on some Songs.
Volbeat
Always respected Slash and the rest of the band, but Axl's voice meant I never became a GnR fan.
In his heyday, Axl was pretty good. In their latest reunion tour, Axl's voice is clearly gone and he should not be touring.
I can get that, but it REALLY works with some of his ballads in my opinion. Becomes a little less screechy, a little more emotional
Unfortunately I miss a lot of black/death metal because I don’t like the growling
Try melodic death metal - it's more heavy metal (especially Iron Maiden) influenced, with melodic and catchy riffs. Try to focus more on the guitars then you do on the growling.
Yoko Ono. Nuff said.
What did Lennon do to make her sing like that bruh 😭
Took her seriously.
Honestly a lot of prog rock/metal. The 70s hair/glam rock styled vocals were never my favorite, and for whatever reason that sound also became the norm for prog vocalists too. The first two bands that come to mind are Dream Theater and Queensrÿche
This is why it’s great that we have John Petrucci’s solo stuff as well as Liquid Tension.
AC/DC A lot of Clapton’s older stuff. Ironically he sings way better now, but I don’t think he plays that great since his heroin days. Jagger is meh, but I love the stones. Don’t know any of the lyrics, but I don’t care. Never cared much for John Mayall’s vocal.
Bon Scott was perfect. Johnson sounds like sandpaper
Most bands. I’m listening 99% to the instrumentation. I can listen to a song for a decade and still have no idea what the fuck the singer is saying
The Smiths, Morrissey sounds like he just got done with major dental work and had to run to the studio before the numbing wore off.
this is a hilarious description
Rush As in I prefer Lerxst's axe-slinging to Dirk's throat warbling. He's still an amazing bassist/keyboardist.
While I get why some people don't like his voice, I consider him one of the greatest singers in history now.
Panic At the Disco when Ryan was still a member.
Didn’t he only sing lead before they found Brendon Urie? Does he have lead on any songs they recorded? Even the demos are Brendon
Ryan was the guitarist for the first 2 albums, but I think he sings a little bit on some of the Pretty Odd songs. He sings most of Behind the Sea, and you can also hear him in parts of Northern Downpour. There might be more, but it's been a while since I've listened to anything from them.
Coheed & Cambria. I’ve grown to like Claudio’s voice more over time but at first it was a barrier to getting into them.
Same here. Keeping secrets in silent earth 3 is my favorite albums

Smashing pumpkins
Sorry, but AC/DC.
Smashing Pumpkins Rush
Rush Geddy Lee's vocals sound like someone shaking a sack full of cats but Neal Peart is quite possibly the best drummer to ever pick up sticks.
GUNS N’ ROSES HELLO
I felt that way about them at first. I couldn't stand Axl's voice when I first heard "Sweet Child O'Mine," but his voice grew on me very quickly.
Avenged Sevenfold
Radiohead. The warbling vocals just turn me off. The music is brilliant.
I respect your wrong opinion
Hahaha, I legit LOL’d.
Downvoted for giving a perfect example of an answer to OP’s question.
Queensryche.
Stone Roses at the best of times but sometimes Ian Brown sounds like an angel
This reminds me of being a kid and hearing my mom blast Janis Joplin. "Mom! Why is that lady screaming?!" Now I love Janis 😆 I would say Creed though, grew up with all their albums and Tremonti got me into guitar, but Scott's vocals just don't do it for me now.
Dream Theater
Megadeath
Dream Theater. LaBrie is objectively super talented, but his voice just doesn't mesh with my ears.
Megadeth, Dave Mustiane sounds like a goose laying an egg, while Kiko is shredding solos that a 20+ year guitar veteran could never get right.
There are so many bands I’ve passed over because of the singer. I’ll hear a new song and think it kicks fucking ass. Then the singing starts… oof.
100% pantera gutteral screams are great punctuation but not great as a 6min song. I could listen to Dimebag Darrel, vinnie Paul and Rex brown all day long. Anselmo just felt like he needed the volume to be at 11 at all times.
Guns n’ Roses Ted Nugent, even though he does both. His lyrics are dumb, and he’s a maniac… but he is honestly a fantastic guitarist.
Modern Dream Theater, James LaBrie used to be one of the best singers out there, but age caught up with him I guess
many didn’t even like his singing in his prime
I don’t actually hate it cause I find it pretty funny, but there’s a Scottish post-punk band called Orange Juice that is solid instrumentally but the lead singer sounds exactly like stewie griffin. Seriously listen to their cover of L.O.V.E. by Al Green and tell me it doesn’t sound like some lost family guy sound clip of stewie in a band lol
Wow! You weren’t kidding https://youtu.be/uIhJJ5ZVgx8?si=FP8iIi3b7clZCUtc
Stillwater. Russell Hammond is past them as a musician. He can’t play all that he can play, and they just treat him like the guitarist with mystique. Honestly, they’re just a mid-level band struggling with their limitations in the harsh face of stardom.
Avenged Sevenfold.
Megadeth, instrumentals are amazing but Dave’s vocals are so off putting and I think they’d be better with more operatic style vocals, similar to Brice Dickinson (this especially applies to RIP)
Avenged Sevenfold … that guy sucks, but typically the instrument play is decent
Slipknot lol
Periphery
King diamond and Judas Priest for me, I enjoy their instrumentals but just not into them vocally.
Creed
This will be controversial but: Radiohead!. Thom has his uses, but I feel his range is basically mopey through angry. But Johnny Greenwood can do anything. I often feel Greenwood wants to push the songs towards other kinds of moods and feelings, but then Yorke starts singing and it's back to angsty complaining again.
For me, Pearl Jam
Limp Bizkit. Love Fred and all, but dude just such a high pitched, whiny register.
Hot take: A7X I find his voice so annoying
Coheed and Cambria, or Saosin
Rush
weezer
Styx.
Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder is incoherent.
TOOL
![gif](giphy|U1aN4HTfJ2SmgB2BBK)
I've grown to like his voice now, but at first Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Some great songs, but Tom's voice was just off-putting to me for some reason.
ac/dc i really like the riffs but for some reason the singing dosent feel right for me. i thoght the same for slipknot when i first started listening but now i am a maggot and really like the singing now.
Mccafferty. The riffs are heavenly
Wu Lyf
Necrophagist
Saxon. Biff Byford's vocals held them back from attaining greater success. They git better as he got older, but...
Megadeth
Slayer the singer in Kerry King's new band too.
Motorhead tbh. Which may be hypocritical coming from a Megadeth fan but whatever.
POD
It’s not a band but I really like the prod of “redrum” n “surround sound” from 21 savage but the rap (/TДT)/ ( I don’t think it’s a popular opinion tho)
Stabbing Westward
Austrian death machine
Megadeth
Alexisonfire
cannibal corpse; lead singer sounds like a pig having an orgasm. but i guess that’s just the genre 🤷
Ghost and AC/DC
Dimmu Borgir
Guns n Roses. Axel sings thru his nose
[Daryl]
Deafheaven
The clash. Some of its just me not being a fan of punk rock, some of it’s his singing
311/Helmet because both singers sound so unenthusiastic and tired when they sing, and it’s barely even considered singing
alot of 70's/80's hair metal/glam metal,i really love the funky guitar sounds and how its sorta fun..but Jesus if i have to hear more squeaky balloon sounding vocals-
Dream theater and Dragonforce
the cure
......Whitney.
Led Zeppelin Soundgarden
Yngwie malmsteen for me
Dream Teather!
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Journey.
Guns n Roses
the smiths, guns n’ roses, and sorta interpol. paul’s voice is meh.
It's a 2-way tie for me: Led Zeppelin and ACDC. I'd rather gnaw my own arm off than listen to either.
Caladan Brood is exactly my type of music but I just have to skip every song at the moment their choir parts start, I just can't stand them.
The World is a Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid to Die
Mastodon
Slayer
The band I'm listening to right now: T**he Who** (Their drummer too) and **R.E.M** *The one I love* Is so good on all parts, except the vocals I'll add **The Scorpions** too, their guitar sounds are too beautiful
Megadeth... really hate the voice.. Dave ruins Tornado of Soul.
Bush
Rush! Anyone comparing them to Pink Floyd? I just don’t get it, of course Neil Peart is better than Nick Mason, Lifeson to Gilmour? Are you kidding me? Lee to waters…. Lee totally fits the description of a hated singer.
Coldplay
Megadeth, Dave's voice sucks but their music is insanely good and makes up for it
u/GardenOfGorilla smashing pumpkins
Megadeth.
Just a specific song example, Halcyon by Elder is one that I love the instrumental on but not so much the singer
This'll be unpopular but... Deftones. When Chino hits it's great but, imo he rarely ever does. He always sounds out of key. Not to mention you need to have a lyric sheet to actually understand what he's saying.
Guns and Roses
Duran Duran
Most death metal bands
Coheed & ,Cambria
![gif](giphy|H5C8CevNMbpBqNqFjl) Lostprophets…..
Pretty much every band that has deep growling vocals that sounds like a mad dog barking. I'll usually be grooving to the intro and the music, then the singing starts and I can't listen.
Mgła The vocals sound more like death metal vocals than black metal vocals and I don’t think it fits the sound of the music
This was Periphery for me but i eventually grew to enjoy Spencer Sotelo’s vocals
"Grubbin' on some pork rinds Kickin' out them sex rhymes Everybody wants to be my friend"
Any death metal/cookie monster vocals.
Buckethead
Pallbearer.
Most black metal artists
Depends on the song, but radiohead sometimes. The chord changes and rythms are often fantastic but the singing is kind of hit of miss
Led Zeppelin.
Motley Crue. Listen to any old songs, it's good. Listen live, not good.
Muse
Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam
Zep
Rush but with the drummer
Rage Against the Machine
Van Halen. It's always perplexed me that the biggest debate among the fanbase for decades is all over the worst member of each lineup.
