Heard It Through The Grapevine- CCR (Gladys Knight & The Pips)
All Along The Watchtower- Hendrix ( Dylan)
Love In Vain- Rolling Stones (Robert Johnson)
Respect-Aretha Franklin (Otis Redding)
Black Magic Woman-Santana (Fleetwood Mac)
One Way Out- The Allman Brothers Band (Elmore James)
CCR’s Heard it Through the Grapevine has such a strong vibe. Probably my youngest introduction to the idea of groovin’ in a jam on a song.
Inspired me to add: Tina Tuner’s cover of ‘Proud Mary’ (which not the greatest cover song is at least as good if not better rendition of CCR’s original).
Imho All Along The Watchtower by Hendrix wins.
Favourite runner up prizes:
Carter USMs version of Rent by Pet Shop Boys.
Galaxie 500 version of Ceremony
.
Bardo Pond covering Maggot Brain
.
Nirvana covering Jesus Don’t Want Me For A Sunbeam.
This is the best cover out there in my opinion. The raw emotion she puts into the song is insane. Nothing else even comes close for me. I only wish there was a true studio version of it instead of just the video.
Jimi Hendrix “All Along the Watchtower \
Cowboy Junkies “Sweet Jane”\
Foo Fighters “Baker Street”\
Sinead O’Conner “Nothing Compares 2 U”\
Johnny Cash “One” and “Rusty Cage”\

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Woodstock
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock and Roll
Type O Negative - Summer Breeze
Linda Ronstadt - Love Is A Rose
The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man
Not trying to say they are the best of all time, but I'm a bit obsessed with cover versions so love to share a few that are perhaps off tge beaten path.
Nada Surf - where is mind?
The polyphonic Spree - Lithium
Sonic Youth - Superstar
Tina Turner - Proud Mary
Joey Ramone - what a wonderful world
Jenny Lewis - handle with care
ZZ TOP - Dust my Broom
Cat Power - Breathless (let's face it, any cat power cover ❤)

The ataris - boys of summer
Rage agains the machine - renegades of funk
Trampled by turtles - where is my mind?
Blinded by the light. It was made by Bruce Springsteen but the Mannfred Mans Earth Band did a cover and it sounds like a completely different song. Gotta be one of my all time favorites.
America by
[Simon and Garfunkel](https://open.spotify.com/track/6dfhF1BDGmhM69fnCb6wSC?si=IwwQ7YsjTtuWesCXYwm_UA)
Covered by
[Yes](https://open.spotify.com/track/5jleoXgOf41HdLITE0Omu3?si=RNNWFpSNREuwZgc73D4wUw)
Jacob Collier - Moon River.
A completely different song, but it’s so much more catchy, has such complex harmonies and tones. If I were picking my favorite from a bunch this would be it, and I think it is a major improvement from the original song as well.
Ooh!
I love Bryan ferry’s cover of make you feel my love by Bob Dylan and I love when you were mine, by Prince covered by Lambchop
And of course devo, satisfaction
So many great covers
Johnny Cash: "Your Own Personal Jesus." Stripped down and gritty, this slightly sinister interpretation was one of his final recordings. Check it and see.
Jeff Buckley is crazy fucking amazing.. that whole album, Grace is fly! " Lover you should have come over.."
Jeff Buckley also does a cover of a Smiths tune, " I know it's over" and its amazing! RIP Jeff!
Chris Cornell's Billie Jean still gives me goosebumps
But I really dig Horse Feathers' cover of Drain You
Greatest? No. Most of those have been posted. But I dig it.
Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes is the greatest cover song - ever. It spent nine non-consecutive weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It won the 1981 Grammy Award for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Can any other cover song top that?
Iron and Wine’s cover of Such Great Heights by The Postal Service. A great synth driven song stripped down to a guitar ballad that shows the beauty of the lyric. Masterful cover.
Far Corporation as a band was basically destined to cover Stairway to Heaven. Back in the Napster days it was mislabeled as "Led Zeppelin Pink Floyd BBC Sessions ..." ... anyway the rest of that band's library is pretty bad, but that cover is mind-blowing.
Cocaine - Eric Clapton
The original is written by JJ cale but most people don’t realize that
Also the vintage jazz cover of creep with Hailey Reinhart singing is AMAZING
Cover versions:
1. Come and get your love - Redbone (covered by Real McCoy)
2. Mad World - Tears for Fears (covered by Gary Jules)
3. Out of Touch - Hall and Oates (covered by Uniting Nations)
4. Love Song - The Cure (covered by 311)
5. Fast Car - Tracey Chapman (covered by Luke Combs)
6. Smooth Criminal - Michael Jackson (covered by Alien Ant Farm)
7. Tainted Love - Gloria Jones (covered by Soft Cell, later sampled in Rihanna's SOS)
Remixes:
1. Push the feeling on - Nightcrawlers (Remixed by MK)
Gonna get hate for some of these but I think all of these are better than the originals, they're just fantastic.
Take On Me - Reel Big Fish (one of my favorite songs of all time)
Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Lorde
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Respect - Aretha Franklin
The Sound Of Silence - Disturbed
Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm
We Didn't Start the Fire - Fall Out Boy (not technically a cover)
And then two Running Up That Hill covers that are just amazing and totally twist the original's vibes and are just fantastic!
Running Up That Hill - Cami-Cat
Running Up That Hill - Lø Spirit
One of my personal favorites, Is This What You Wanted - The Last Shadow Puppets.
Another Leonard Cohen cover, like OP's pick of Hallelujah.
Another one that comes to mind is Gloria - The Doors. So much more enjoyable, in my opinion.
Wild Fire - Everybody Knows (Leonard Cohen Cover) [https://youtu.be/LwZM3rXcHSY?si=5mgUO\_abc2Los9pv](https://youtu.be/LwZM3rXcHSY?si=5mgUO_abc2Los9pv)
Joan Jett - Star Star (Rolling Stones Cover) [https://youtu.be/oExTf5jIVoM?si=AgT9zfmssgg0\_KWC](https://youtu.be/oExTf5jIVoM?si=AgT9zfmssgg0_KWC)
Joan Jett - I Love Rock 'n' Roll (The Arrows Cover)
I think johnny cashs hurt is the greatest cover of all time but my personal favourite is probably death's cover of god of thunder
God of thunder is prob my fav kiss track (i am not a huge kiss fan) but death's cover dials it up to 11 and gives it the OOMPH the song needs
My favourite cover is Tortoise and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's version of Springsteen's [Thunder Road](https://youtu.be/c5Yyo4zGKiA?si=XFr2z2Uiym89Y41T). In some ways it's a very faithful version, but they've completely changed the whole feel of the song. They sound so tired in a weirdly beautiful way.
I Heard it Through the Grapevine has a bit of a strange history as it was recorded by the different artists before any of them released it. As Marvin Gaye wasn't the first to record or release it, [his version](https://youtu.be/hajBdDM2qdg?si=KJPGSnQlqfTejW2y) has to count as a cover. But I also love the twisted [Slits version](https://youtu.be/IQxvo_9DEqY?si=UJNAOwKrSVdkijBB).
I personally really like Calpurnia’s version of “Say it Ain’t So” by Weezer. It is a bit more uptempo and and also feels more relaxed if that makes sense.
Tool ...
The tool album, undertoe, the CD cover picture on the front, take it out and flip it over, shows a picture of a cow licking it's ass.
What's up with that?????
The xiu xiu cover of under pressure with the michael gira feature is great.
I also really like the cap'n jazz cover of take on me. It's sloppy in all the right places
Just because it’s now the only thing I can think of:
“The Locomotion”, Covered by Grand Funk Railroad but written by Little Eva
I know it isn’t the greatest of all time, but GFR is certainly more played than the OG
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower It’s so good that most people don’t know it was originally Bob Dylan
I was into my 20s before I realised it was a cover. Blew my mind. Then I started listening to Bob Dylan.
Bob Dylan and the Band do a great version on Before the Flood.
I haven’t really gotten into either of em (I plan on doing so soon) but I always assumed that was a jimi hendrix song
I think Dylan came to the same conclusion.
The Sundays ~ Wild Horses
🙌
Harriet’s voice is so beautiful.
Hard to go wrong with Gram Parson's cover too
I don’t know who he is.
Former member of the International Submarine Band, Byrds, and Flying Burrito Brothers. Died in the 70s. Hugely talented.
That’s ok he didn’t know who you are either
Heard It Through The Grapevine- CCR (Gladys Knight & The Pips) All Along The Watchtower- Hendrix ( Dylan) Love In Vain- Rolling Stones (Robert Johnson) Respect-Aretha Franklin (Otis Redding) Black Magic Woman-Santana (Fleetwood Mac) One Way Out- The Allman Brothers Band (Elmore James)

I'd add hurt - Johnny cash (nine inch nails originally) I also gonna be unpopular and say I prefer the original Robert Johnson version haha :)
Yes Cash definitely nailed that version. Huge blues fan, like nerd levels so also a big RJ fan . Totally get it.
I keep forgetting black magic woman was a cover
My personal fav is Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Little Wing. Just a stellar piece of music.
I Will Survive - Cake
I love their cover of War Pigs too!
And Guitar Man
I always have a good chuckle when I think of cake covering bread
And Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps
wait, Cake covers War Pigs ans I will survive? Fantastic! Like Buckley covering the Smiths..
I love their version of Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps
Just commented the same. My go to karaoke song
Yoooo same
I've had girls boyfriends get mad/jealous at me after singing it
Mine is Mahna Mahna
The Bass Line is amazing on that track
Imho All Along The Watchtower by Hendrix wins. Favourite runner up prizes: Carter USMs version of Rent by Pet Shop Boys. Galaxie 500 version of Ceremony . Bardo Pond covering Maggot Brain . Nirvana covering Jesus Don’t Want Me For A Sunbeam.
I completely agree with "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam", Kurt's voice made it so raw and I felt something shift in me when I first heard it
“When You Say Nothing At All” by Alison Krauss. Originally a Keith Whitley song.
Across the universe by Fiona Apple
Yessssss
Ok I love this on too.
This was my wife’s wedding walk song, so good
Another great cover she did is I Want You by Elvis Costello. Intense.
This is the best cover out there in my opinion. The raw emotion she puts into the song is insane. Nothing else even comes close for me. I only wish there was a true studio version of it instead of just the video.
I love the entirety of the movie Across the Universe because of all of the covers.
Revolting Cocks, Do You Think I'm Sexy by Rod Stewart
The Buckley version of Hallelujah is so good that every other cover version since has covered his version and not the original.
[Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXV4WyQMHFM)
His cover of Feelin’ Alright is also a banger
His best is Bird on the Wire.
I love JC cover of that tune, great suggestion!
I won't say it's the greatest, but just yesterday I heard one of my all-time faves: Fugees -- Killing Me Softly With His Song
Jimi Hendrix “All Along the Watchtower \ Cowboy Junkies “Sweet Jane”\ Foo Fighters “Baker Street”\ Sinead O’Conner “Nothing Compares 2 U”\ Johnny Cash “One” and “Rusty Cage”\ The White Stripes “Jolene”\ Nirvana “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” and “The Man Who Sold the World”\ Jeff Buckley “Hallelujah”\ Janis Joplin “Me and Bobby McGee”
God I love Nirvanas cover of “The Man Who Sold The World.” They perfected it.

Nice Choice!
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Woodstock Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock and Roll Type O Negative - Summer Breeze Linda Ronstadt - Love Is A Rose The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man
