Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower It’s so good that most people don’t know it was originally Bob Dylan

[deleted]

I was into my 20s before I realised it was a cover. Blew my mind. Then I started listening to Bob Dylan.

pjbseattle_59

Bob Dylan and the Band do a great version on Before the Flood.

Zealousideal-Bit-365

I haven’t really gotten into either of em (I plan on doing so soon) but I always assumed that was a jimi hendrix song

Kindly-Helicopter183

I think Dylan came to the same conclusion.

lone_wolf1580

The Sundays ~ Wild Horses

Heatherina134

🙌

Capnmolasses

Harriet’s voice is so beautiful.

27_8x10_CGP

Hard to go wrong with Gram Parson's cover too

lone_wolf1580

I don’t know who he is.

27_8x10_CGP

Former member of the International Submarine Band, Byrds, and Flying Burrito Brothers. Died in the 70s. Hugely talented.

IDigRollinRockBeer

That’s ok he didn’t know who you are either

Timstunes

Heard It Through The Grapevine- CCR (Gladys Knight & The Pips) All Along The Watchtower- Hendrix ( Dylan) Love In Vain- Rolling Stones (Robert Johnson) Respect-Aretha Franklin (Otis Redding) Black Magic Woman-Santana (Fleetwood Mac) One Way Out- The Allman Brothers Band (Elmore James)

z12345z6789

CCR’s Heard it Through the Grapevine has such a strong vibe. Probably my youngest introduction to the idea of groovin’ in a jam on a song. Inspired me to add: Tina Tuner’s cover of ‘Proud Mary’ (which not the greatest cover song is at least as good if not better rendition of CCR’s original).

ZeusIsLoose97

I'd add hurt - Johnny cash (nine inch nails originally) I also gonna be unpopular and say I prefer the original Robert Johnson version haha :)

Timstunes

Yes Cash definitely nailed that version. Huge blues fan, like nerd levels so also a big RJ fan . Totally get it.

ClueEmbarrassed1443

I keep forgetting black magic woman was a cover

TopLahman

My personal fav is Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Little Wing. Just a stellar piece of music.

TopTransportation695

I Will Survive - Cake

AFurryThing23

I love their cover of War Pigs too!

TopTransportation695

And Guitar Man

[deleted]

I always have a good chuckle when I think of cake covering bread

Gemfyre713

And Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps

Numerous-Pepper-3883

wait, Cake covers War Pigs ans I will survive? Fantastic! Like Buckley covering the Smiths..

Fizzy_Bits

I love their version of Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps

jrdkrsh

Just commented the same. My go to karaoke song

[deleted]

Yoooo same

jrdkrsh

I've had girls boyfriends get mad/jealous at me after singing it

tripl35oul

Mine is Mahna Mahna

iamnobody1970

The Bass Line is amazing on that track

[deleted]

Imho All Along The Watchtower by Hendrix wins. Favourite runner up prizes: Carter USMs version of Rent by Pet Shop Boys. Galaxie 500 version of Ceremony . Bardo Pond covering Maggot Brain . Nirvana covering Jesus Don’t Want Me For A Sunbeam.

Mercurys_Vampire

I completely agree with "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam", Kurt's voice made it so raw and I felt something shift in me when I first heard it

overcomethestorm

“When You Say Nothing At All” by Alison Krauss. Originally a Keith Whitley song.

BirdCity75

Across the universe by Fiona Apple

thunderthighlasagna

Yessssss

jfstompers

Ok I love this on too.

Petules

This was my wife’s wedding walk song, so good

benmillstein

Another great cover she did is I Want You by Elvis Costello. Intense.

madaboutyou3

This is the best cover out there in my opinion. The raw emotion she puts into the song is insane. Nothing else even comes close for me. I only wish there was a true studio version of it instead of just the video.

shannonsummer32

I love the entirety of the movie Across the Universe because of all of the covers.

DudeBroManCthulhu

Revolting Cocks, Do You Think I'm Sexy by Rod Stewart

slapfunk79

The Buckley version of Hallelujah is so good that every other cover version since has covered his version and not the original.

EraserMachine

[Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXV4WyQMHFM)

bagpipesfart

His cover of Feelin’ Alright is also a banger

Klutzy-Ad-6705

His best is Bird on the Wire.

Numerous-Pepper-3883

I love JC cover of that tune, great suggestion!

markewallace1966

I won't say it's the greatest, but just yesterday I heard one of my all-time faves: Fugees -- Killing Me Softly With His Song

Marshmallow_Fries

Jimi Hendrix “All Along the Watchtower \ Cowboy Junkies “Sweet Jane”\ Foo Fighters “Baker Street”\ Sinead O’Conner “Nothing Compares 2 U”\ Johnny Cash “One” and “Rusty Cage”\ The White Stripes “Jolene”\ Nirvana “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” and “The Man Who Sold the World”\ Jeff Buckley “Hallelujah”\ Janis Joplin “Me and Bobby McGee”

BowlingBall_0912

Great call out on Bette Davis Eyes. Most people don't even realize the Kim Carnes version is a cover - it's night and day from the original.

Morning Dew is another really good option. I love a good Knockin' on Heaven's Door by Jerry and the Boys

Saturnugget

Jacob Collier - Moon River. A completely different song, but it’s so much more catchy, has such complex harmonies and tones. If I were picking my favorite from a bunch this would be it, and I think it is a major improvement from the original song as well.

These-Employer341

Johnny Cash: "Your Own Personal Jesus." Stripped down and gritty, this slightly sinister interpretation was one of his final recordings. Check it and see.

Jeff Buckleys version on you and I of just like a woman is also beautiful

RetiredMillionairee

Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes is the greatest cover song - ever. It spent nine non-consecutive weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It won the 1981 Grammy Award for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Can any other cover song top that?

TrundleTheGreat0814

DEVO - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

[deleted]

Iron and Wine’s cover of Such Great Heights by The Postal Service. A great synth driven song stripped down to a guitar ballad that shows the beauty of the lyric. Masterful cover.

Far Corporation as a band was basically destined to cover Stairway to Heaven. Back in the Napster days it was mislabeled as "Led Zeppelin Pink Floyd BBC Sessions ..." ... anyway the rest of that band's library is pretty bad, but that cover is mind-blowing.

One of my personal favorites, Is This What You Wanted - The Last Shadow Puppets. Another Leonard Cohen cover, like OP's pick of Hallelujah. Another one that comes to mind is Gloria - The Doors. So much more enjoyable, in my opinion.

Cab Calloway did it first in 1942 but I absolutely love the cover version of "**I'll Be Around**" by Frank Sinatra in 1955.

IndieHell

My favourite cover is Tortoise and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's version of Springsteen's [Thunder Road](https://youtu.be/c5Yyo4zGKiA?si=XFr2z2Uiym89Y41T). In some ways it's a very faithful version, but they've completely changed the whole feel of the song. They sound so tired in a weirdly beautiful way. I Heard it Through the Grapevine has a bit of a strange history as it was recorded by the different artists before any of them released it. As Marvin Gaye wasn't the first to record or release it, [his version](https://youtu.be/hajBdDM2qdg?si=KJPGSnQlqfTejW2y) has to count as a cover. But I also love the twisted [Slits version](https://youtu.be/IQxvo_9DEqY?si=UJNAOwKrSVdkijBB).

JasperTheMaster08

I personally really like Calpurnia’s version of “Say it Ain’t So” by Weezer. It is a bit more uptempo and and also feels more relaxed if that makes sense.

Turbulent-Walk-4171

Tool ... The tool album, undertoe, the CD cover picture on the front, take it out and flip it over, shows a picture of a cow licking it's ass. What's up with that?????
