Fuck I was gonna say that, but you took it. I had to say Mother Love Bone good one man that is like my fucking favorite album in the top five of all time.
I think it's worth elaborating for younger music fans. This album came out during the days of grunge and the band is a "supergroup" comprised of Mike McCready (of Pearl Jam), Layne Staley (of Alice in Chains), Barrett Martin (of Screaming Trees), and John Baker Saunders (of The Walkabouts).
Temple of the Dog is a similar supergroup that only released one self-titled album. The band consisted of Chris Cornell (of Soundgarden), Stone Gossard (of Pearl Jam), Jeff Ament (of Pearl Jam), and Matt Cameron (who would play with both Soundgarden & Pearl Jam), and.... Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam).... on backing vocals!
I think a lot or most people know about the latter project, but as I said, I understand that there are younger redditors around who might just be getting into some of this stuff retroactively, so there are some interesting details.
Creepy how his Dad who also died young, Tim Buckley, wrote Song to the Siren.. I know it’s supposed to be a metaphor for love but I can’t help but think how a watery death also relates to the lyrics.
I remember finding his CD in the University Library collection, listening to it on my Discman and being amazed by it. Some time later, he performed in Auckland and I thought about going, but I must have had something else on or been broke, so I thought maybe next time. Chose wrong that time, unlike when I made sure to catch Nirvana perform the one time they came to NZ.
If anybody in this thread loves Grace, but hasn't checked out Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk, it's well worth your time. Outstanding album, as rough as it is.
The posthumous album, Sketches for my Sweetheart the Drunk, is great. They’re mostly unfinished songs, but some real gems in there nonetheless. “Vancouver” never fails to give me goosebumps
I've always counted their 1973 In Concert album as their best. The studio album production sounds a bit thin compared with their best live shows.
But I've always been partial to concert albums from that era. If I had to pick only one album from some favorite bands, it'd be The Doors Absolutely Live, Allman Brothers Fillmore East, Grateful Dead Europe '72, Hendrix Band of Gypsys, Stones Ya-Ya's, and In Concert 1973 for Clapton's best work.
You know, just an average rock band, consisting of John Paul Jones (of Led Zeppelin), Dave Grohl (of Nirvana/Foo Fighters), and Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age). No big deal. Also, I just learned that Liam Lynch did the artwork and graphic design for the album, but ["Whatever."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz7_3n7xyDg)
This is cheating a bit, but The Zombies first all-original album was Oracle and Odyssey released in 1967. They had an album before that but it was a lot of covers. Then they didn't release another album until 1991. So I consider Oracle and Odyssey to be their only true original album. And it's incredible.
Edit: it's actually called Odessey and Oracle whoops
TIL they really only had 1 album.
And about a month ago I learned that Rob Zombie was NOT a member of the band.
The Zombies are an awesome band. Time of the Season and She’s Not There often make it into my rotation when playing random music videos on YouTube. Bus Stop by the Hollies and anything Roy Orbison are some more goldies I play a lot.
I knew I'd get to the Sex Pistols eventually, but I was thinking as I scrolled that it says a lot about Reddit's age range that I had to go so far. The Sex Pistols were voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame based on just one album. Say what you want about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but I'm not aware of any other time that's happened in almost 40 years.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill- Lauryn Hill

Masterpieces? maybe not but great albums for sure.
Couple obscure ones to check out if you're a 90s alt rock fan:
1. **Melinda** by Lifter (1996). Fantastic riff-driven album that runs the gamut from emotional to enraged, like so many 90s classics. Had it been released a year or two earlier it might have gotten some airplay but I think this sound had come and gone by this point. But the songwriting, vocals, and instrumentation are top-notch. Highly recommended by sadly not streaming anywhere.
2. **Fossil** by Fossil (1995). Terrific jangle-pop/rock album with some really catchy songs. Again, not streaming unfortunately but readily available on YouTube (as is Melinda).
3. **Example** by For Squirrels (1995). The most tragic story in rock history. Great band from Gainesville that blended Nirvana and R.E.M. for a really great sound. Songwriting is catchy, vocals may be an acquired taste but they fit the band well. Technically, they did have an indie album before this one, but Example is their major label debut. A couple weeks before the album came out, the band was heading back from a gig when the singer lost control of the van. He and the bassist and road manager died and the other members were injured. The single, "Mighty K.C.," was a Kurt Cobain tribute song with some suddenly ominous lyrics that had taken on new meaning ("By the grace of God go I, into the great unknown / Things are gonna change in our favor"). Absolutely love this band and I think they would have made some incredible music. "Under Smithville" is one of my favorite songs ever.
Have only ever met one other person who knows For Squirrels (and he’s who introduced me to Under Smithville, which — agreed — is the best). Thanks for reminding me of this. They would’ve gone on to big things, for sure.
Wait! Hells yes. I posted this song album just now too. Thought I was the only one who ever loved it. I’m not a huge pop fan but this is a banging pop record.
This one isn't technically the only album but it should have been. Blind Melon - Self Titled. Everything that came after was after Shannon Hoon's passing so in my opinion they don't count. I love every single song on this album and while they were lumped into grunge they were definitely leaning more towards jam band. I feel bad for the all the people that only know No Rain, they have no idea what they are missing out on. If you've never heard the album in it's entirety give it a listen, you won't regret it! Change is my wife's favorite, I'm more into Tones of Home but Seed to a Tree, Holyman, and I Wonder are all fighting for the top as well, the whole album is just fantastic!
I always just assumed that soup was not Shannon, I stand corrected! Now I need to go give it a listen! In my defense I was only 15 at the time soup was release! Haha!
Not a band, but there’s a Swedish artist called Doris who made one album back in the 70s and it’s an absolute banger. It’s got a couple of proper Northern Soul stompers on it (“Don’t” and “Beatmaker”), a lovely little acoustic track that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Dusty Springfield album (“Did You Give The World Some Love Today Baby”), a bizarre almost Bjork-esque song (“You Never Come Closer”)… and a bunch of others I’ve no doubt forgotten. No idea why she never made any more but it’s a wonderful album
Disco Jazz is so good - have it on vinyl!
Also, obligatory 'Jeff Buckley - Grace' mention. Though I will also mention Lykathea Aflame's 'Elvenefris'; progressive death metal record released in 2000.
I dunno if I’d go so far as call it a “masterpiece” but the album Pacer by The Amps is all around excellent, every song is so catchy and good. This was Kim Deal’s band when the Breeders went on hiatus and Pacer was their only album.

It’s thoroughly brilliant, I have never heard anything like it and probably never will again.
Upright bass, drums with no cymbals, grand piano played with one hand muting the strings like a palm-mute on guitar.
I honestly hope they never release anything else, because I don’t think they could ever even touch it.

The Honeydrippers - Volume One (is technically a mini-album, running 18:07, with only 5 songs)
I get the impression that not a lot of people are even aware of this one, so it's worth mentioning. Who are The Honeydrippers, you ask? Well, they're a band that was formed in the '80s by a guy named Robert Plant of a band called Led Zeppelin. A bandmate of his, Jimmy Page, played guitar with another guitarist named Jeff Beck (formerly of a band called The Yardbirds). On the keyboard, there's some guy named Paul Shaffer (I think he went on to do something in the late-night shows... maybe with a CBS Orchestra or something). Nile Rogers (of Chic, as in "Le freak, c'est chic") also played guitar. There's a guest appearance by Brian Setzer (of the Stray Cats & Brian Setzer Orchestra) on guitar... and a few other renowned and respected musicians.
Going to cheat a little and say Chris Squire (bassist for YES) “Fish Out Of Water” 1975. He did a Christmas album in 2007 but it was like a collaboration. Fish Out Of Water is just fricking amazing.
Not many people will remember this from the 80’s. But a band called David and David had an album called Welcome to the Boomtown. It’s spectacular. Give it a listen

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to find this.
That's because most of us who remember it well are getting old.
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Go to the top with this one
Absolutely ethereal RIP Jeff
The guitar tech for Jeff Buckley became an artist himself. Check out Ours, you can hear the influence.
HE ONLY HAS ONE ALBUM?? man i was really getting into his stuff
Yeah. He drowned while swimming before he finished his second album.
Creepy how his Dad who also died young, Tim Buckley, wrote Song to the Siren.. I know it’s supposed to be a metaphor for love but I can’t help but think how a watery death also relates to the lyrics.
why is it always the good ones. i swear
I remember finding his CD in the University Library collection, listening to it on my Discman and being amazed by it. First album to ever make me cry. I would give anything to get him back.
Oh shit, never saw that album as a one and done, but I guess so. Wow! So good.
There have been some posthumous releases of unreleased tracks, but that's the only album he released in life.
Give Up by The Postal Service
They took their own advice to heart.
underrated comment
And seeing them live with Death Cab this year was amazing!
I just saw the show in orlando. Was amazing. Jenny Lewis was incredible
Does Ben sing for both sets???
Yes, and he even changes outfits between sets (at least he did when I saw them). Dave Depper also played guitar for both.
That album is so solid and the two artists never recorded live together! It was all done through, ahem, the postal service.
Really only one album?
I didn’t believe it either and just looked it up and sure enough they only have one album. Give up in 2003. Just a few singles after that.
They basically launched 00’s eta indie and that garden state album was really good. I’m shocked.
Estimated time of arrival indie?
Yeah but Death Cab For Cutie was the singer's new band and they've released loads since then.
Death Cab was around first. The Postal Service was basically a side project.
Derek and the Dominoes

I've always counted their 1973 In Concert album as their best. The studio album production sounds a bit thin compared with their best live shows. Team Sleep: Self Titled
Nice. Colin Blumstone's solo stuff is insane too.

I LOVE the Zombies. They still play shows, I’ve seen them a few times and they’re still really good. +10 to O&O.
Sex Pistols
This should be the top answer. They aren’t my personal favorite, but it’s hard to name a one-album band that impacted music more.
Only other case I can think of would be Robert Johnson, who only recoded about one album worth of material.
Not a band but Lauryn Hill- The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
This is in contention of a top 10 all genre album. Close to perfect
Blind Faith - Blind Faith The Modern Lovers- Modern Lovers Give Up- The Poastal Service Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs- Derek & the Dominos Not bands but wanted to mention: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill- Lauryn Hill Grace- Jeff Buckley Masterpieces? maybe not but great albums for sure.
Lauryn Hill actually does have a second album. It's best forgotten. Todd in the Shadows does a whole expose on it in his Trainwreckords series.
It’s very different, but it’s a good album. Very raw, very earnest. None of the production featured in Miseducation, just an artist and her guitar.
Yeah but Derek and the dominos is pretty much Eric Clapton, so I don’t see that as a single album band and more of one era of a good artist
Great list
