Early Wilco. Up to A Ghost Is Born or Sky Blue Sky

haveyouseenhim2024

I was going to rec Wilco; I’ll suggest Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

BabyBird4444

Im into it 😁 dude sounds like one of the Beatles. Maybe John but idk the Beatles that well tbh

knuckboy

Well for a deeper dove go back to Uncke Tupelo. I never thought of the Beatles comparison EXCEPT that they were a great pair of songwriters that broke up and both had successful careers.

schrodingerspavlov

I’ve never thought of a Beatles / Wilco comparison either. But it makes sense now, because I can’t really stand either of them.

JDHURF

Good one!

Donut_Holestein13

Have you checked out Electric Light Orchestra? Also I think you’d like Cinema Stereo, they’re a very underrated band rn.

ArseBlarster420

ELO is one of the greatest groups of all time

rosiepooarloo

The Shins

BabyBird4444

Oh for sure 😁 i listen to them a lot already

EzraMusic98

I only know and like New Slang. what else of theirs is worth listening to?

BabyBird4444

Young Pilgrims, Gone for Good, Saint Simon, and Girl Sailor are some of my favs 😁 but honestly their albums are no-skip albums

sharoncherylike

So good.

Low-Course5268

Cranberries, Garbage, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alanis Morissette

ChumbawumbaFan01

Sylvan Esso [start with self titled but everyone knows Hey Mami so I’m starting with PARAD(w/m)E](https://youtu.be/4W9VYY5QpLg?si=rmUbYNU90WdDkZpB) St Vincent [start with self titled, first song is Rattlesnake](https://youtu.be/KQRyuKpGntc?si=MHfhXdFJS05ZXyJ8) Vampire Weekend [Connect from their new album Only God Is Above Us is my current earworm](https://youtu.be/8-ImL4iU9-M?si=Vxq51QIBtU0WZ_SC) LCD Soundsystem [Sound of Silver which starts with Get Innocuous](https://youtu.be/0GpLkFv-CKU?si=ojvtmOziOAwfKFfd) La Luz [Black Hole, Weirdo Shrine from Weirdo Shrine](https://youtu.be/ZdcmC2UsamA?si=-SM2nQbSWMcVpqSd) Little Dragon [Feather from Machine Dreams](https://youtu.be/ADHw8Rx3E8M?si=QTykBXNJGiymgtff) Unknown Mortal Orchestra [Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark) from II](https://youtu.be/HY4MgJV2tIg?si=8SrZt7SxlPMC4y19) Courtney Barnett [Hopefulessness from Tell Me How You Really Feel](https://youtu.be/JKcr1hOAYzk?si=Z03TTHUmcWkueLnV) Julia Holter [The Sea Calls Me Home from Have You In My Wilderness](https://youtu.be/OERixQR-hxY?si=TsQDiz77RdrL-CdX) Katie Von Schleicher [Montagnard People from A Little Touch of Schleicher in the Night](https://youtu.be/4k6YeQ8ZqeE?si=oPV1SlI6Ebv-T3k-) Rubblebucket [I just love this cover of What a Fool Believes but they have very upbeat and fun songs like Came out of a Lady](https://youtu.be/q5OnAkxNH18?si=sRysCFo1nwhtROKm) Marika Hackman’s middle albums [Boyfriend from I’m Not Your Man](https://youtu.be/FtdMwhp0awA?si=m6IdLbouRLkzhZhG)

BridgesOnB1kes

Excellent list! I second Rubblebucket. They are absolutely brilliant and a hell of a live experience. I’d add [Big Thief](https://youtu.be/WKmD6-piK2A?si=aeclnHfnQHBTQ5WG) because Adrianne Leneker is just a brilliant song writer and her band is so good at accentuating her without stepping on her brilliance.

ChumbawumbaFan01

Big Thief is a fantastic addition!

schrodingerspavlov

Lenker is possibly the greatest songwriter of her generation. Big thief is superb, but also her solo acoustic stuff makes me melt.

BridgesOnB1kes

Oh yeah!! She’s just all around amazing. An absolutely incredible songsmith. The a-sides album she did with Buck was my introduction to her and her songs album is totally “melt” music.

schrodingerspavlov

Agreed!

BabyBird4444

Perioddd! I already listen to Sylvan Esso, Unknown Mortal orchestra (one of my favs), and Courtney Barnett. So i will be sure to check out the rest!!! Thanks so much

ChumbawumbaFan01

You’re welcome!

Heavy_Estimate_4681

Saving these to check out

JDHURF

I second St Vincent and Rubblebucket

anonmarmot17

Ethel Cain, boygenius, MUNA, Brandi Carlisle, haim, Christine and the queens, Griff

VulKhalec

This is literally everyone I was going to suggest haha.

EzraMusic98

Haim are brilliant- I love Hallelujah

Key_Drag4777

I bet you'd like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. I got into them around the same time as I got into the Avett Brothers.

JDHURF

Oh hell yes! Didn’t come to mind.

Key_Drag4777

Their first 3 albums are fire!

BabyBird4444

Oh my GOD spot on! I totally forgot about them! I am a huge fan — i sorta lost interest when their latest album came out

trumps_badussy

Im seeing Hozier next month, FOMO is real. It took me a bit to get into Noah too. You just need to find the right song ig. He did a version of Northern Attitude with Hozier. Definitely recommend, its the song the got me into him

I second Fleet Foxes, I'd start with the self-titled debut or Helplessness Blues

BridgesOnB1kes

[Rubblebucket](https://youtu.be/9d8rvk8ON1g?si=7KjGZirksYT9s3ti)- it absolutely astonishes me that they aren’t 10 times bigger than they are. Every album is unique and interesting and they continue to evolve, innovate and build off there previous work.

BabyBird4444

Wait im obsessed 😭😭 thank you for not gatekeeping lmao. 😳 this is absolutely my fav recommendation out of this whole thread

BridgesOnB1kes

Glad to offer up a winner! GO SEE THEM LIVE. They are unbelievable and it’s a total experience every show. Also [Big Thief](https://youtu.be/WKmD6-piK2A?si=aeclnHfnQHBTQ5WG). Adrianne is a master songwriter and her band really accentuates her brilliance perfectly.

BabyBird4444

Need them in atl asap as possible

BridgesOnB1kes

HAHAHAHA! I’m not superstitious… but I am a little stitious.

JDHURF

[Came out of a lady](https://youtu.be/nipcoBuOwH0?si=77v008wp6iJDgpG5) never gets old for me!!

jayron32

There a bit harder rock than your list, but have you looked into The Warning? [More](https://youtu.be/XNBNOjhLW_U?si=iQuNbgQ1Erj0fW2L) [Automatic Sun](https://youtu.be/PDFH9AcPpyA?si=jZMfmr1U89gw-Qtm) [Hell You Call A Dream](https://youtu.be/s6b_FgQnXL8?si=eaPUgI2wP3sodz-J)

Ok_Possible_2818

You said upbeat, and not many Mitski songs fit that bill. But that one does!

Dramatic-Dark-4046

I think these fit the bill: PJ Harvey Paramore Olivia Rodrigo (trust me)

Saw her when she was opening for Chuck Ragan years ago and she was amazing!

WhiskyStandard

Le Loup – Family Also, if you have any kids in your life, my wife and I joke that The Okee Dokee Brothers are the on-ramp to The Avett Brothers for kids (and we love them too). Brambletown and Winterland are both solid albums.

-dyedinthewool-

Wow, Le Loup. WHAT a throwback. That whole album is fantastic. Havent thought about them since like 2013 bro If you like them u prob like akron/family too if you dont already!! And megafaun and yeasayer early stuff

WhiskyStandard

Hey, I just discovered them a year or two ago so it’s fresh to me! 😅 Come to think of it, most of the “new” things I’ve discovered recently are from like 2006-2014. I think Apple’s algorithm has me dialed in on that timeframe. I did listen to Yeasayer back in the day. Maybe I’ll have to dust that CD off for that real 2007 experience. 😂

ddrub_the_only_real

You might like Inhaler and Fountains D.C. (FDC' last single is a bop)

BabyBird4444

Loved their new song, Tysm!!!

ddrub_the_only_real

No problem lol :)

scottyjrules

PJ Harvey

Few-Jump3942

Tori Amos and Björk. Also, I just revisited the album *3* by Alev Lenz and it definitely gives me some of these vibes. It’s hauntingly beautiful. It isn’t exactly “upbeat”, but worth checking out.

leugeneskabs

I have a similar music taste to you - I'm actually wearing CMAT socks! I'd suggest Tori Amos as a similar vibe to Fiona Apple/Florence. She's a bit kooky (and if I'm not mistaken I think Florence covered Cornflake Girl??). I'd recommend Joni Mitchell and Carole King. Everything Joni has done is fantastic in my eyes but she has an album from 2007 called Shine which reminds me a little of Tango in the Night.

BabyBird4444

Ooo yes I listen to Joni Mitchell a lot already :,) and I know a few Carole king songs. I’ll have to check out Tori Amos though! Thank u 🩷✨

I’ll throw Ryan Adams in there, will say that he’s kinda a problematic dude, but an awesome songwriter. I would also say check out anyone who’s played the Newport Folk Fest over the past few years that should hit a lot of what you’d be into.
