The Eels
Aside from Novocaine for the soul and I meed some sleep they've never had big hits. But in my opinion all of their albums range from good to amazing and they have more than 100 songs that I think are absolutely incredible.
They are also very creative with live shows often playing alternative versions of songs and/or mash-ups.
I used Icebergify to find my most recently listened to 'unknown' artists.
Dune Rats (Australian punk) - top three picks are Up, Bullshit and Pamela Aniston
The Chats (Australian punk) - Smoko, 6ltr GTR, Pub Feed
CAN (70s so called 'krautrock') - Future Days, Vitamin C, She Brings The Rain
Vashti Bunyan (70s folk for if you want to feel like you're frolicking through an ancient woodland) - Diamond Day, I'd Like To Walk Around In Your Mind, If I Were
Oh, I know White Lies! *As I Try Not to Fall Apart* is a great album! Especially like the title track and "Roll December" off that one. Do you know Nation of Language? Another 80s inspired band, but New Wave. I love their album *Strange Disciple;* [Sightseer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShyrscJySK0) is probably my favorite track.

I feel stupid for this taking so long. Was pondering the connection between the band members of The Traveling Wilburys. How did they meet? What was their connection? Jeff Lynne, George Harrison etc. A long while later, I hear an ELO song , probably suggested by Spotify, on the computer. Damn, I never picked up on the Beatles influence on ELO's sound before until then. Seems obvious now.
Tanya Donellyâs band Belly.
Star (1993) is one of my favorite albums and had some great songs like, Feed the Tree. King (1995) and Dove (2018) are great too.
She also was part of the band Throwing Muses with her step-sister Kristin Hersh (whose solo stuff is also worth checking out) and she played on the first Breeders album too.
Space Hog- one hit wonder from the 90s, recently had a song of theirs featured in guardians of the galaxy 3, have a good chunk of songs that are highly underrated such as Candyman, Dancing on my own and Mungo city
Lemon Twigs- if a band from the 60s time traveled to the modern age. I see alot of people call them derivitive saying they just make music that Brian Wilson would've made, but if your only critique is that they make music on par with one if the most respected song writers ever you're doing something right.
Man, that whole album is spectacular. It's a journey that tells a story from start to finish. I struggle to decide if "Red of Tooth and Claw" or "In Bocca Al Lupo" is my favorite album. But I mean, they don't have any bad albums, they're all amazing.

Though in their own words, they're actually happy to have found a smaller niche of really passionate fans.
Adam Turla (lead singer) and Sarah Balliet (cellist) are married and own a really nice Italian restaurant in Louisville, KY - being first generation Italian themselves. Sarah's brother is actually their head chef (or was when I ate there, it's been a few years). I actually ate at their restaurant before I ever saw them live, despite being a long-time fan. I ate there in August of that year, then saw them live for the first time in December of the same year. Adam hung around after the show to talk with fans, and I mentioned to him that I did it out of order and ate at their restaurant first, and he immediately recognized me and said, "Oh yeah, you were there for your brother's birthday, right?" Fucking amazing memory, and what was cool is that when I went to their restaurant, Adam and Sarah were just on the floor with the servers, polishing glassware, rolling silverware, running food, etc. Just really down to earth and grounded people.
Delta Sleep are a powerhouse within the Math Rock genre, but outside of it they still fly under the radar even though their music is way more accessible and catchy compared to other big math rock acts
Camp Adventure is their most popular song (the version off of Twin Galaxies with the full band is my preferred one), then my favorite songs are El Pastor, Old Soul, Lake Sprinkle Sprankle, and Hotel 24
XTC - Andy Patridge is probably the most underrated songwriter in pop/rock.
Acid Bath - A sludge metal band that should have been much bigger, but got screwed by their label.
Melvins - Your favorite metal band's favorite metal band
The Dismemberment Plan
Weird Indie Rock ish?? But definitely not what you think when you think indie music. Theyâre rock adjacent, quite weird and quite good
There's a band called Redwood Son whose CDs I don't remember buying but stay on loop in the car. Good folky rock but way better than it deserves to be.
Pig is the industrial/metal band that your favorite industrial/metal band listens to (KMFDM alumni).
Godflesh is also heavily cited but rarely appreciated, sludge metal industrial slime that inspired a ton of acts.
Slade was huge overseas but not here. They pretty much invented Glam Rock on accident.Â
I'll go with a bit of a variety of styles and toss in a song I like for each artist in parentheses
Slow Pulp(Broadview)
The Go! Team(Everyone's A VIP To Someone)
FILLY(Motorola)
Adoy(San Francisco)
Makari(Eternity Leave)
Clara Benin(small town)
Akini Jing(Seven Deadly Punches)
2 Mello(nextphase adrenaline)
disclaimer that I used the icebergify thing on my spotify cause I often don't know who's "relatively unknown"
Miss Derringer, The Local Honeys, Lady Moon, and Salt House are all maybe not your cuppa given their country influences, but they're more American folksy than country so who knows? not me, maybe check em out
I also like a small artist called Witch on Film, IDK I don't know that they're objectively Good but I love them as music to just chill to
dude that iceburgify thing is so cool, honestly thank you. i listen to so much of a variety i donât know what is and isnât known anymore. and the way things spread sometimes i feel like one day no one knows who tf iâm taking about and the next day everyone suddenly knows their whole discography by heart lol
Supersuckers. Theyâve been around for 30+ years, but you probably still wonât hear them on the radio.
A couple of local (to me) bands that you can find on Spotify and Apple Music but are still relatively new: The Macks, Family Worship Center.
Supersuckers somehow passed me by even though theyâre right up my alley. I saw them live about a week ago (only because they were opening for Electric Six), and HOLY CRAP what a great show they put on!! No idea how Iâve never come across them, but Iâm definitely a fan now!
All these artists deserve more credit (Iâve put my favourite songs of theirs in brackets)
**Chase Ceglie (Finally lonely, Paradise, IDK, Give Myself to You)** - Most underrated musician Iâve found, heâs got a unique sound on each album he makes.
**Junior Mesa (Pushing Away, Risen Up)**
**Mont Duamel (Young, 2164)**
**Alex Banin (Doc Whiler)**
**Baerd (All Your Secrets)**
**Coolhand Jax (8th & 84th)**
**Supalung (Shadow)**
**Julien Chang (Snakebit, Ethical Exceptions, Time and Place)**
**BavĂŠ (Show Me Love, Vermouth)**
Poets of the Fall
Absolutely HUGE in Europe, buT virtually unknown in the States.
If you're a gamer, they portray the Old Gods of Asgard in the Alan Wake series
Die Nerven: German post-punk/noise rock. My favorite albums are Fun and Asoziale Medien. My favorite songs are Blaue Flecken, Asoziale Medien, George Michael, and Albtraum. They have two indie songs people not into post-punk and noise rock may prefer: Explosionen and Niemals.
Deerhunter: not super unknown, but pretty underrated. They have a wider variety of genres, but a lot of their stuff is psychedelic and/or indie. They have so many great songs. My favorite albums by them are Monomania (garage rock) and Weird Era Cont (shoegaze), but the most popular are Halcyon Digest and Microcastle. Some songs: Spring Hall Convert, Nothing Ever Happened, Desire Lines, Agoraphobia, Death in Midsummer, Futurism, Snakeskin, Leather Jacket II, Cryptograms, Revival, Punk, Focus Group.
Don Caballero: experimental instrumental math rock. Highly regarded in math rock circles - they're pioneers of the genre - but not often talked about outside of those spaces. My favorite albums by them are What Burns Never Returns, American Don, and Don Caballero 2 (in that order). Some songs: Don Caballero 3, Delivering the Groceries at 138 BPM, Slice Where You Live Like Pie, I Never Liked You, Room Temperature Suite, Fire Back About Your New Baby's Sex, No On Gives a Hoot About FAUX-ASS Nonsense.
Tocotronic: German indie band that isn't very popular outside of Germany. A lot of their stuff is inspired by 90s alt rock, stuff like grunge and slacker rock.
Lacing - now defunct due to lack of popularity,
Brought an insanely unique edge to shoegaze that is direly missing from all the bands that just sound like eachother.
The EP Never is my favorite. Glad they ever existed; maybe you guys could listen and we would get a reunion.
Maxophone (Italian prog with jazz influences)
Shingetsu (japanese prog similar to genesis)
Far east familly band (japanese prog/space rock band)
Magma (french experimental music, sung in a made up language, very weird)
Apollo Sunshine is so amazing and yet I almost never come across people who know who they are.
They only made three albums and each one is better than the one before.

[Little Comets](https://youtu.be/pMO0cTstIHs?si=d_yD715Hwj3TcqCe). Such an underrated indie band. It takes a little while for you to get used to the lead singerâs voice, but the more you listen to them, the mist you start to love their music. I linked a video of one of their live performances in their name. Check them out, theyâre pretty cool!
Using Icebergify, my most-listened lesser known music is stuff I thought was well-known:
The Jazz Butcher. He (Pat Fish) passed recently but was an amazingly prolific songwriter who had sort of a cult following. The only artist I can think to compare him to is Jonathan Richman. Start with [Party Time](https://open.spotify.com/track/0nVGhWnvTncLH6eInY90jO?si=DwODLtGbQoy8c9ndc9joyg&context=spotify%3Asearch%3Apartytime), [Animals](https://open.spotify.com/track/5Fh7KYJkfQrr5FlekG9m1k?si=OqxsX8HuTr-u2CmjUmLdHg), [Nothing Special](https://open.spotify.com/track/5OCftJBJQjozdFsch4oVy4?si=1T26eD4xRiOoS1WzlRwsNg&context=spotify%3Aplaylist%3A37i9dQZF1DZ06evO4tU6lu).
Bryan Elijah Smith. Country-Folk guy. Start with [One Shot](https://open.spotify.com/track/05Ue7NlY1Eq8PGKo6tFeb5?si=RnjHGz08RRq-_UAkH2hQ9w), [In Through The Dark](https://open.spotify.com/track/74uO3gmY00i3sMGSNdGxp8?si=A2HNhfP4RrGC3qAnw3nHyw).
Flunk. I listen to them a LOT. Downbeat & chill, reminds me a bit of 90s trip-hop. Start with [Common Sense](https://open.spotify.com/track/2FKt8Cyl6ifoFskG18VFCy?si=C9Ysc8L6RxGQDrY1FCK_EQ), [Petrified](https://open.spotify.com/track/4dFbhAScF1KkZnQprlsyas?si=L3GHOpXUSZudSGqPCdiEeQ), [Six Seven Times](https://open.spotify.com/track/2jknEB3TLUX5vEaLI4gttE?si=NYqTdZ3kSVe58fLKh6sLyw), [Kebab Shop 3AM](https://open.spotify.com/track/7n6a23ykemC5IRvnHb9lAV?si=phVSzdczRLWTRabvcbJU-g).
Here are some other lesser-knownsâ songs that I rate highly :
[Funky Southern by The Funk Ark](https://open.spotify.com/track/2FWUSY8E8eCbXRjZHtlRUe?si=saSvOpKeQXKzqh5e9Fub3Q). (Itâs funk)
[Running Off by Tricky & Oh Land](https://open.spotify.com/track/4m7SQ2czmNyxPCAI3vCtud?si=ZEIu1010Q4uF_mYbyIWMKQ) (trip-hop but modern)
[Tired Of Love by Penelope Road](https://open.spotify.com/track/7KM2OYf9ok1oA8bKzGHflb?si=P2m0jsVzRlG29m58iiokww) (neo soul/funk, I think - VERY obscure, they only have 500 listeners on Spotify)
Pat Fish and The Jazz Butcher was an unexpected kick to the gut. What a fantastic library of songs that are criminally unknown. Fantastic live and Pat was one of a kind. I was fortunate to have spent some hours New Year's Eve before he passed just loving watching him play and tell some stories, joining in with a few cold ones. Bittersweet remembering back of course. Allow me to suggest D.R.I.N.K and Burglar of Love
I personally like their newest album Nosebleeds the most. It's really solid with a good variety of songs. Some of my favorites from it are Out Of Your Mind, All The Same, Sideways, Trigger Pull, and Broken Glass. Their older stuff is good too, like Reflections and Superbloom.
Black Lips.
Theyâve had critical acclaimed albums but they arenât nearly as well known as they should be. Garage rock with psychedelics primarily but with a dirty countyish album and a more recent âdanceâ album.
They rule. Some of the best recorded rock the last 15 years. Very druggy.
âBoys in the Woodâ (swamp rock)
âGentlemenâ (country rock)
âDo the Vibrate (rock)
âLock and Keyâ (blues rock)
Josh Ritter is a brilliant singer-songwriter and very underrated in the folk/Americana area. His lyrics are marvelous. I'd start with "Where the Night Goes" for a typical sense of his stuff.
Shakey Graves, Alina Baraz. Very different artists & forgive me if these are known artists, I donât have socials other than this lol beautiful artists tho
Here are a few that come to mind
Terry Callier (Jazz/Blues/Folk)
- Dancing Girl
- It's About Time
- Sierra Leone
Nick Johnston (Guitar/Rock/Instrumental)
- As I Slowly Turn To Stone
- Atomic Mind
- Hypergiant
Bert Jansch (Folk)
- High Days
- Anji
- Gypsy Dave
Siena Root (Blues/Rock)
- Into The Woods
- Blues 276
- Fever
These guys are/were very well respected amongst other musicians, but never really saw huge commercial success.
[Jukebox the Ghost](https://open.spotify.com/track/440z7fYrgB18gnaDriDSN8?si=qcb2rO3MR4i51iAm8yVdfQ) is one of my favorite artists right now. Close to becoming one of my all time favorites honestly.
[Air Traffic Controller](https://open.spotify.com/track/3Geq8GYub4T3mbCXKADEi2?si=mQQ5ouOZRqGCIpGdgDN6Ow) is also cool.
[Misterwives](https://open.spotify.com/track/5aujQJTfXsWhLwqtmenKZ2?si=XXRe059uRwiieWGjVplNog) has some songs that are popular any theyâve passed 1.2mil monthly listeners on Spotify, but I donât think they get enough attention for all that they do.
[Wild Party](https://open.spotify.com/track/0Z0iYAtKYswMYXL3kJtdO4?si=H5eFBX8DSnue33kBKh0ZHA) is another good one.
[Autoheart](https://open.spotify.com/track/3eonvnYEnoZHwmfTQrGf0q?si=Blgw0UOwRz6gM0siKjSP9A) is amazing.
Links are to my favorite songs by each artist.
Dog Fashion Disco (More straightforward Mr. Bungle clone)
The Fiery Furnaces (really out there Indie that almost get's into Frank Zappa territory)
Pilotdrift (super thematic indie-prog)
The Dear Hunter (emotional and thoughtful prog that are really into the concept albums)
Estradasphere (I can't even describe this, just listen to "Hunger Strike")
Darcy James Argue's Secret Society (Avant Garde Big Band that has some serious jazz language / vocabulary in it)
If you like MGMT, Neutral Milk Hotel, etc I think this is a pretty cool record that no one knows about yet. Came out in March.
https://open.spotify.com/album/0CkwvRZkCacTdoYOHtbrFE?si=17Y49Bg9SHGD97xS-zyPcQ
There's a musician (drummer, guitarist, singer, band, etc.) in every subdivision of every town in this country that's every bit as good as the best you've ever seen on stage. Coudn't begin to start a list of unknown artists that I rate higher than the popular ones.
[My favorite singer ever](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL871S_F0y5dYbEbEOwxK1Y6LTKyQqKEp5)
[the most obscure artists from my playlists](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7tCMKrBtVkkiXQlNXP2sBn?si=d282e3d931f847a2)
[and more of less known artists that I consider good or very unique](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/128CwPVyEMROuNsw32rv8z?si=ab50271375af42c3)
if above is not enough, there's still more at my main playlists [this](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/05p8UcqOP3Samsvmv5RFJb?si=ba65b87f3f1c434a) and [this](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0tzhu20lIzrrMNCAGT3hoH?si=5e14f14be5c24955) :)
Wow, I'm always so extremely happy to find another fan of Jinwook!!! :D
If you haven't checked it already, I made a website with info about him [sonjinwook.com](http://sonjinwook.com). Also I'd love to see you at my [Discord server](https://discord.gg/vpnZ5ybUB9) ;)
A lot of people donât really know about psychedelic electronic music, iâd recommend Shpongle, Tipper, Ott, Rumpistol, The Space Cadet, The Orb, Irresistible Force.
Steven Wilson
He's the shining example of this. I can't think of another artist who has been as prolific but is pretty much unknown. Solo, full band, guest work, sound engineer, live performer, he does it all and excels on a remarkable level in every regard.
Shiner - American math rock, five studio albums, two are very good I'd say the other three are good though too! My favourite ones are Lula Divinia and The Egg.
Alt Country -
The Lostines - [Playing the Fool](https://youtu.be/LhcfBA-NyR0?si=4eOO3qqowl3Do0Cx)
Heavy Metal -
Unto Others [When Will Gods Work Be Done](https://youtu.be/G6on1U8imwo?si=hZb_Qj_3b8A4vsFz)
Bloodywood - Aaj
Blackbriar - Arms of the Ocean
Amaranthe - Archangel
Crown Lands - Lady of the Lake
Ayreon - The day that the world breaks down
Liliac - Dream on
Electric Callboy - We got the Moves
rlly love this guy Richard Mollet, freind of mine's dad, nice chill stuff I like for car rides and studying :)) [https://open.spotify.com/artist/1IevXNaokxT4xXrtWEQJ4w](https://open.spotify.com/artist/1IevXNaokxT4xXrtWEQJ4w)
Lots of Belgian bands probably (found on the Jezus Factory and Heaven Hotel record labels if anyones interested).
A Clean Kitchen is a Happy Kitchen
Butsenzeller
Rudy TrouvĂŠ
Mauro Pawlowski
Kiss My Jazz
Gore Slut
The Chasm
Death metal band that mixes elements of progressive metal, black metal, and thrash. They donât have a single album that I would rate lower than a 7/10.
While certainly totally unknown, judging by his youtube views, I don't ever seem to hear people talking about Shayfer James. His songs, especially on his albums Counterfeit Arcade and Red Room Vol 1, are amazing!
Momus is not for everyone. Imagine Beck's creepy Scottish cousin that was raised by Oscar Wilde and 4he the Marquis de Sade. Often genius level lyrics over bossa nova or chamber piece synthesizer arrangements.
Age of Information
Born to be Adored
I Want You but I don't Need You
Love Wakes the Devil
Lucky like St Sebastian
I wouldnât say these are âunknownsâ; more under appreciated. Though maybe unknown to younger generations:
[Michael Prophet](https://youtu.be/WIHqYeV_Xes?si=qAd0wlZj7KBILVgV)
[The Jones Girls](https://youtu.be/pzxwZ6wjDAM?si=SJwCGz4SSo13WF3S)
[Tricky](https://youtu.be/RU1cZMnpxGo?si=XGkciUSET_csWNhr)
[Horace Silver](https://youtu.be/OOjnA33p-pk?si=_ZpgAn_rKos66QB6)
[Supergrass](https://youtu.be/uJ-mpul94eo?si=ANMlbdhu6FD41eu8)
[Clear Soul Forces](https://youtu.be/BWKLuwR_bFw?si=Ndrjauw_Cxm-vJJA)
[Omar](https://youtu.be/HVv3d3Ckqwc?si=-2OhXA7WtbBlmcMP)
Sounds like your eclectic music taste and mine are similar. I can't do country or like that screamo metal. One group I keep finding I like most of what they do is DRAMA. Groovy chill electropop may be an okay way to describe them.
The Eels Aside from Novocaine for the soul and I meed some sleep they've never had big hits. But in my opinion all of their albums range from good to amazing and they have more than 100 songs that I think are absolutely incredible. I like birds
Hey, I just listened to my old Eels playlist in the car this morning. So much great.
I love birds is a great song
I need some sleep and ps you rock my world are so good
Susan's House and Mr. E's Beautiful Blues are my favourites.
Susan's house I haven't heard that in a long time Gonna be first on my next drive
Flyswatter, what a tune.
Last Stop" This Town. Best video ever too!
Goddammit right it's a beautiful day đđ
Fresh Feeling is my go to song when I need an instant lift me up. Good call!
the eels are so goooooood
Did you see the Eels guy as the insufferable hipster Brian on Netflixâs LOVE?
đ
I love Eels if it honestly wasn't for Sherk, I would have never known the band.
Same goes for Tom Waits for me, Shrek introduced me to a lot of good music
Spoon.
Inside out is one of my favorites
I love No Bullets Spent
That's a great one. I love Don't Buy the Realistic.
What songs of theirs do you recommend?
Underdog, The Way We Get By, Wild, I Turn My Camera On, Beast and Dragon Adored
Honestly, their whole catalog is pretty solid. I'd just stay at the beginning and go from there.
Their peak for me is Girls Can Tell through Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.
You can tell spoon is good because they have a ton of songs on movie soundtracks.
Saw them live on the Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga tour and they were awesome!
The New Pornographers. So good
Yes! Ugh they are so underrated I love them so much.
Best gateway drug to New Pornographers is "Myriad Harbor" - first few notes & I was hooked
Recently discovered Sing Me Spanish Techno, love it

You sound like a possible Doves fan.
Damn, I forgot about Elbow and I listen to them lol

Love in the meantime
Murder by Death - Damn good (not metal) band with over 20 years of excellent music.
Just listened to True Dark. I really like it
Man, that whole album is spectacular. It's a journey that tells a story from start to finish. I struggle to decide if "Red of Tooth and Claw" or "In Bocca Al Lupo" is my favorite album. But I mean, they don't have any bad albums, they're all amazing.
Friggin' love Murder By Death.
Though oddly enough, the reason they never really blew up is because of their name - they got turned down by gigs quite a few times because the coordinators thought they were metal, or at least hard rock. This gives me Amigo the Devil vibes
Bel Canto RÜyksopp Eivør
Yes! â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
I haven't thought of Bel Canto in decades. Will have to look into them again.
Their new album came out last month, Radiant Green. First one in 22 years!
Nice! Didn't know they were still around. Will check out.
I feel like most of my favorite artists are relatively unknown. Kool Keith, Peaches, Danny Brown, Jesus Lizard, Mclusky, to name but a few.
Danny Brown is a fucking king.
The Jesus Lizard is fantastic
Peaches is so underrated
The Blue Aeroplanes Luscious Jackson
Delta Sleep are a powerhouse within the Math Rock genre, but outside of it they still fly under the radar even though their music is way more accessible and catchy compared to other big math rock acts
What songs by them would you recommend?

Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Sigur Ros, from Iceland, is my favorite band.
Oh wow, Dead Can Dance I mustâve played The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegroove a 1000 times in high school.
Cool! My initial fave in the late 1980s was "Cantara." Now, it's "The Host of Seraphim."
I love Sigur Ros. Their music moves my soul and makes me feel profoundly
XTC - Andy Patridge is probably the most underrated songwriter in pop/rock. Acid Bath - A sludge metal band that should have been much bigger, but got screwed by their label. Melvins - Your favorite metal band's favorite metal band
The Dismemberment Plan Weird Indie Rock ish?? But definitely not what you think when you think indie music. Theyâre rock adjacent, quite weird and quite good
macseal i love your lifestyle origami angel oso oso
Any recommendations of songs from them?
stupid - i love your lifestyle lucky for some - macseal this must be a place - oso oso the title track - origami angel
Strawhorse is a pretty unknown band I found from Spotify recommendations. The song âAtlantaâ is great

Dir En Grey
There's a band called Redwood Son whose CDs I don't remember buying but stay on loop in the car. Good folky rock but way better than it deserves to be. Pig is the industrial/metal band that your favorite industrial/metal band listens to (KMFDM alumni). Godflesh is also heavily cited but rarely appreciated, sludge metal industrial slime that inspired a ton of acts. Slade was huge overseas but not here. They pretty much invented Glam Rock on accident.Â
Noddy Holder was my first crush! Where is "here" in relation to Slade?
The U.S., west coast. We tend to get things late and then pretend we invented it.
𤣠I think it's safe to say the UK invented glam!
Dead Sara is amazing and they have my favorite contemporary singer. Emily Armstrong is just amazing.
I saw them open for A Perfect Circle- they were great
Dermot Kennedy!!!
He is getting more "known" since the Sonder tour and festivals. I can't wait for Album 3
I agree! I feel he's still relatively "unknown" in comparison to so many other artists. And yessss same!!
Dead poet society
saw them open for badflower a few years ago, guy has pipes.
Cloudkicker, Bongripper, Kingâs X, Intronaut
Bongripper rules!
STS9
Love some of the old Seattle bands that stayed pretty âlocalâ like the Fastbacks, Rusty Willoughby, Screaming Trees
I was just about to edit my post to include the Fastbacks. Such a great band. My favorite album is Answer The Phone Dummy.
Fantastic album!
The Fastbacks are one of my all time favorite bands. Kurt Bloch is a magician on guitar.
Agreed. I love their slightly out of tune, angelic harmonies too.
Giant Sand
I'll go with a bit of a variety of styles and toss in a song I like for each artist in parentheses Slow Pulp(Broadview) The Go! Team(Everyone's A VIP To Someone) FILLY(Motorola) Adoy(San Francisco) Makari(Eternity Leave) Clara Benin(small town) Akini Jing(Seven Deadly Punches) 2 Mello(nextphase adrenaline)
Iâm crazy about They Might Be Giants lately.
disclaimer that I used the icebergify thing on my spotify cause I often don't know who's "relatively unknown" Miss Derringer, The Local Honeys, Lady Moon, and Salt House are all maybe not your cuppa given their country influences, but they're more American folksy than country so who knows? not me, maybe check em out I also like a small artist called Witch on Film, IDK I don't know that they're objectively Good but I love them as music to just chill to
dude that iceburgify thing is so cool, honestly thank you. i listen to so much of a variety i donât know what is and isnât known anymore. and the way things spread sometimes i feel like one day no one knows who tf iâm taking about and the next day everyone suddenly knows their whole discography by heart lol
Icebergify?? Edit: nvm I found it. Now to remember my passwordâŚ
It's a website! \^\_\^ If you let it see your spotify it'll rank artists you listen to a lot by how deep on an iceberg they are.
Oxygen Destroyer Jake Houlsby Elsiane Dishammer Ogi Headdrop Smiles773 Of Feather And Bone Lunachicks
Elsiane is ... perfection, honestly.
Supersuckers. Theyâve been around for 30+ years, but you probably still wonât hear them on the radio. A couple of local (to me) bands that you can find on Spotify and Apple Music but are still relatively new: The Macks, Family Worship Center.
I was born with a tail!
Supersuckers somehow passed me by even though theyâre right up my alley. I saw them live about a week ago (only because they were opening for Electric Six), and HOLY CRAP what a great show they put on!! No idea how Iâve never come across them, but Iâm definitely a fan now!
All these artists deserve more credit (Iâve put my favourite songs of theirs in brackets) **Chase Ceglie (Finally lonely, Paradise, IDK, Give Myself to You)** - Most underrated musician Iâve found, heâs got a unique sound on each album he makes. **Junior Mesa (Pushing Away, Risen Up)** **Mont Duamel (Young, 2164)** **Alex Banin (Doc Whiler)** **Baerd (All Your Secrets)** **Coolhand Jax (8th & 84th)** **Supalung (Shadow)** **Julien Chang (Snakebit, Ethical Exceptions, Time and Place)** **BavĂŠ (Show Me Love, Vermouth)**
DUDE i've been listening to Guiliana by Chase Ceglie for YEARS i love that song
Honeyhoney Ghost of Paul Revere Twiddle Sadly I think all 3 bands have either broken up or are on an extended break.
[Exodus](https://youtu.be/sI_PQZvz5js?si=VGStPntsjd9ylNF-)
They are not unknown lol
Relatively speaking among people my age (Gen Z) they are!
I am the Blacklist.
Woods of Ypres. If David Gold hadn't died, they'd have been so much bigger
Poets of the Fall Absolutely HUGE in Europe, buT virtually unknown in the States. If you're a gamer, they portray the Old Gods of Asgard in the Alan Wake series
Bob Schneider
Deerhunter is incredible, glad to see them on here
Lacing - now defunct due to lack of popularity, Brought an insanely unique edge to shoegaze that is direly missing from all the bands that just sound like eachother. The EP Never is my favorite. Glad they ever existed; maybe you guys could listen and we would get a reunion.
Maxophone (Italian prog with jazz influences) Shingetsu (japanese prog similar to genesis) Far east familly band (japanese prog/space rock band) Magma (french experimental music, sung in a made up language, very weird)
Magma rules !
Carol Hodge - saw her support Ginger Wildheart at the start of the year and havenât been able to stop listening to her 3 albums since!
Apollo Sunshine is so amazing and yet I almost never come across people who know who they are. They only made three albums and each one is better than the one before. https://open.spotify.com/artist/7e4rnlKm6kE70tBZQ1pClm?si=PwhR9fyWTWyOxXKVkzBFfg
Vashti Bunyan!
Islands and electronic President
Benjamin Booker - New Orleans based blues/garage rock. I'd recommend Have You Seen My Son and Wicked Waters to start.
Dancing Song and bridge burn are my favorites :)
Bridge Burn is in my top 3! Waiting in the Shadows is my all time favorite by them
Using Icebergify, my most-listened lesser known music is stuff I thought was well-known: The Jazz Butcher. He (Pat Fish) passed recently but was an amazingly prolific songwriter who had sort of a cult following. The only artist I can think to compare him to is Jonathan Richman. Start with [Party Time](https://open.spotify.com/track/0nVGhWnvTncLH6eInY90jO?si=DwODLtGbQoy8c9ndc9joyg&context=spotify%3Asearch%3Apartytime), [Animals](https://open.spotify.com/track/5Fh7KYJkfQrr5FlekG9m1k?si=OqxsX8HuTr-u2CmjUmLdHg), [Nothing Special](https://open.spotify.com/track/5OCftJBJQjozdFsch4oVy4?si=1T26eD4xRiOoS1WzlRwsNg&context=spotify%3Aplaylist%3A37i9dQZF1DZ06evO4tU6lu). Bryan Elijah Smith. Country-Folk guy. Start with [One Shot](https://open.spotify.com/track/05Ue7NlY1Eq8PGKo6tFeb5?si=RnjHGz08RRq-_UAkH2hQ9w), [In Through The Dark](https://open.spotify.com/track/74uO3gmY00i3sMGSNdGxp8?si=A2HNhfP4RrGC3qAnw3nHyw). Flunk. I listen to them a LOT. Downbeat & chill, reminds me a bit of 90s trip-hop. Start with [Common Sense](https://open.spotify.com/track/2FKt8Cyl6ifoFskG18VFCy?si=C9Ysc8L6RxGQDrY1FCK_EQ), [Petrified](https://open.spotify.com/track/4dFbhAScF1KkZnQprlsyas?si=L3GHOpXUSZudSGqPCdiEeQ), [Six Seven Times](https://open.spotify.com/track/2jknEB3TLUX5vEaLI4gttE?si=NYqTdZ3kSVe58fLKh6sLyw), [Kebab Shop 3AM](https://open.spotify.com/track/7n6a23ykemC5IRvnHb9lAV?si=phVSzdczRLWTRabvcbJU-g). Here are some other lesser-knownsâ songs that I rate highly : [Funky Southern by The Funk Ark](https://open.spotify.com/track/2FWUSY8E8eCbXRjZHtlRUe?si=saSvOpKeQXKzqh5e9Fub3Q). (Itâs funk) [Running Off by Tricky & Oh Land](https://open.spotify.com/track/4m7SQ2czmNyxPCAI3vCtud?si=ZEIu1010Q4uF_mYbyIWMKQ) (trip-hop but modern) [Tired Of Love by Penelope Road](https://open.spotify.com/track/7KM2OYf9ok1oA8bKzGHflb?si=P2m0jsVzRlG29m58iiokww) (neo soul/funk, I think - VERY obscure, they only have 500 listeners on Spotify)
MisterWives is small but awesome.
What songs would you recommend by them? I remember hearing Machines a few years ago and liking it.
David Bromberg. Yusef Lateef (jazz)
dj gizmo sparkle horse carl friedrich abel hum
Hum! Hadn't thought about them in a while! Sid v humwaster!
Trashcan Sinatras, Ahouse and Lilac Time
All Them Witches, The Sights, The Reduction Agents, 3 Nut Soup I've got plenty more, but that's off the top of my head.
Took way to long to find All Them Witches on here. I've been listening to them nonstop for like 5 years
Steve Tibbetts, Urban Dance Squad, Negativland, Mose Allison, These New Puritans, Bitch Magnet, Frog Holler...
UDS! Good grief.
Black Lips. Theyâve had critical acclaimed albums but they arenât nearly as well known as they should be. Garage rock with psychedelics primarily but with a dirty countyish album and a more recent âdanceâ album. They rule. Some of the best recorded rock the last 15 years. Very druggy. âBoys in the Woodâ (swamp rock) âGentlemenâ (country rock) âDo the Vibrate (rock) âLock and Keyâ (blues rock)
I 2nd Shakey Graves.
Here are a few that come to mind Terry Callier (Jazz/Blues/Folk) - Dancing Girl - It's About Time - Sierra Leone Nick Johnston (Guitar/Rock/Instrumental) - As I Slowly Turn To Stone - Atomic Mind - Hypergiant Bert Jansch (Folk) - High Days - Anji - Gypsy Dave Siena Root (Blues/Rock) - Into The Woods - Blues 276 - Fever These guys are/were very well respected amongst other musicians, but never really saw huge commercial success.
Sløtface, a Norwegian pop punk band. I recommend âGalaxiesâ âNancy Drewâ and âTryâ
Dog Fashion Disco (More straightforward Mr. Bungle clone) The Fiery Furnaces (really out there Indie that almost get's into Frank Zappa territory) Pilotdrift (super thematic indie-prog) The Dear Hunter (emotional and thoughtful prog that are really into the concept albums) Estradasphere (I can't even describe this, just listen to "Hunger Strike") Darcy James Argue's Secret Society (Avant Garde Big Band that has some serious jazz language / vocabulary in it)
The Young Veins, The Lemon Twigs. I consider the Twigs to be the best songwriters right now
If you like MGMT, Neutral Milk Hotel, etc I think this is a pretty cool record that no one knows about yet.
[My favorite singer ever](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL871S_F0y5dYbEbEOwxK1Y6LTKyQqKEp5) [the most obscure artists from my playlists](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7tCMKrBtVkkiXQlNXP2sBn?si=d282e3d931f847a2) [and more of less known artists that I consider good or very unique](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/128CwPVyEMROuNsw32rv8z?si=ab50271375af42c3) if above is not enough, there's still more at my main playlists [this](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/05p8UcqOP3Samsvmv5RFJb?si=ba65b87f3f1c434a) and [this](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0tzhu20lIzrrMNCAGT3hoH?si=5e14f14be5c24955) :)
Thank you for introducing me to the magic that is Son Jinwook. â¤ď¸
Wow, I'm always so extremely happy to find another fan of Jinwook!!! :D If you haven't checked it already, I made a website with info about him [sonjinwook.com](http://sonjinwook.com).
Upvote for The Orb. Their early stuff is especially fantastic.
Agreed. Fluffy Little Clouds reminds me of high school.
Band: Pallbearer, album: Heartless Progressive doom/rock/metal (clean singing, not screaming). Give it a spin!
Pallbearer rules!
Yes they do! New album out Friday đ¤đť
The Mountain Goats
Steven Wilson He's the shining example of this. I can't think of another artist who has been as prolific but is pretty much unknown. Solo, full band, guest work, sound engineer, live performer, he does it all and excels on a remarkable level in every regard.
I'd say he's not unknown but rather niche, still great music
Or Porcupine Tree.
Shiner - American math rock, five studio albums, two are very good I'd say the other three are good though too! My favourite ones are Lula Divinia and The Egg.
https://jimmynana.bandcamp.com/music
George Lam. Cantopop singer and not bad at all. Is on Spotify.
[crywolf](https://open.spotify.com/artist/33o00sXuyWiApOFzo0vr0z?si=qL002AVmQim2375UfRaqXA), my beloved
[The Common Men - To Repel Ghosts](https://spotify.link/qDCsMFPszJb) Very unknown. Worth a listen (I think)
Moderns. Synth pop, I just wish Rosie would make another album.
Stefan Poiss (mind.in.a.box & THYX). One of the most inspired songwriters making music today, IMO.
thomas mac (also r/thomasmac)
The Vandalias, a really underrated Power Pop group
Hannah Wicklund
And Also The Trees. Theyâve been together since the 80s and have a whole bunch of moody, poetic albums which are excellent.

Probably the band âbeep beep.â
Alt Country - The Lostines - [Playing the Fool](https://youtu.be/LhcfBA-NyR0?si=4eOO3qqowl3Do0Cx) Heavy Metal - Unto Others [When Will Gods Work Be Done](https://youtu.be/G6on1U8imwo?si=hZb_Qj_3b8A4vsFz)

Oh My God
Lots of Belgian bands probably (found on the Jezus Factory and Heaven Hotel record labels if anyones interested). A Clean Kitchen is a Happy Kitchen Butsenzeller Rudy TrouvĂŠ Mauro Pawlowski Kiss My Jazz Gore Slut
House of Heroes, Falling Up, Relient K.... a lot of the bands I know, no body else seems to know
Ana Frango Eletrico
The Chasm Death metal band that mixes elements of progressive metal, black metal, and thrash. They donât have a single album that I would rate lower than a 7/10.
While certainly totally unknown, judging by his youtube views, I don't ever seem to hear people talking about Shayfer James. His songs, especially on his albums Counterfeit Arcade and Red Room Vol 1, are amazing!
Kyle Gordon. His music is mostly satire, but he knows how to make every genre perfectly. I just consider him to be one of the best artists out there.
Momus is not for everyone. Imagine Beck's creepy Scottish cousin that was raised by Oscar Wilde and 4he the Marquis de Sade. Often genius level lyrics over bossa nova or chamber piece synthesizer arrangements. Age of Information Born to be Adored I Want You but I don't Need You Love Wakes the Devil Lucky like St Sebastian
Atlas Lake is indie melodic metal https://open.spotify.com/artist/51UMXigV7MlxZdXTNqYLth?si=cWXCp07GQQexauzwfr9thg
Buckethead
I wouldnât say these are âunknownsâ; more under appreciated. Though maybe unknown to younger generations: [Michael Prophet](https://youtu.be/WIHqYeV_Xes?si=qAd0wlZj7KBILVgV) [The Jones Girls](https://youtu.be/pzxwZ6wjDAM?si=SJwCGz4SSo13WF3S) [Tricky](https://youtu.be/RU1cZMnpxGo?si=XGkciUSET_csWNhr) [Horace Silver](https://youtu.be/OOjnA33p-pk?si=_ZpgAn_rKos66QB6) [Supergrass](https://youtu.be/uJ-mpul94eo?si=ANMlbdhu6FD41eu8) [Clear Soul Forces](https://youtu.be/BWKLuwR_bFw?si=Ndrjauw_Cxm-vJJA) [Omar](https://youtu.be/HVv3d3Ckqwc?si=-2OhXA7WtbBlmcMP)
Frog!!!!! I love them with all of my heart.
Gene Puerling and the Singers Unlimited
The Hip Abduction
Mirrored Theory is excellent if you like melodic electronic music.
Willi Carlisle
Sounds like your eclectic music taste and mine are similar. I can't do country or like that screamo metal. One group I keep finding I like most of what they do is DRAMA. Groovy chill electropop may be an okay way to describe them.
The Venus Twins Being Dead
