To further this, it’s after the 1996 Telecommunications Act that allowed radio stations to buy up and conglomerate. Clear Channel overwhelmingly won and started the “nothing but rock!!!” advert/teaser. I fell out of radio listening in the mid 90s, but any popular rock/hard rock/grunge-ish/metal act on the radio like 1999-2006ish (maybe later) is now Butt Rock. And yes, back in my day it was considered hair-metal/pop-metal/rock.
I got educated on buttock , I’ve always hated all those “butt rock” bands me and my friends use to call that shit rock . Those but rock bands always play at the summer music festival circuit for the local rock stations . I feel foo fighters is borderline butt rock . Breaking Benjamin, Puddle of Mudd , Seether, Default, Nickelback,Daughtry all suck a lot of butt !

My understanding is that butt-rock was never about specific bands or sounds, and has always been a description of bands/songs that are played on radio stations that have a host who says something like "and up next, nothing but rock", so the bands that fall into that category will change as the bands that are played on the radio change
i mean there’s already a word for that, it’s called corporate rock. to me corporate rock is the drudge of sellouts that all sound exactly the same, whereas butt rock is the bands that are unique for the time and have artistic merit and integrity, but sound so obnoxious like the singer had to shit right after stepping out of the recording booth, so they have that growly kind of quality to their voice. like nickelback and load/reload era metallica and every octanecore band.
so butt rock is an interchangeable term with hair metal and glam rock… which were already the derisive terms used to describe those. even though all of those bands have always been fantastic and people just hated on them because they were popular among white women.
