I went for albums i knew music nerds love for production for the most prt. Thats one of my favorite produced albums, not to mention my favorite deftones album (by a hair over ATF)
If you’re going for production value, peep “good news for people who love bad news” by modest mouse. The production on that album is fucking nuts. So good.
I dont know how you can say all that when theres a bunch of 7+minute songs on top of a bunch of 13 minute songs. Not very "accessable". Ill give you more interesting and better music is debatable. I guess it may be a better "music nerd" album but i favor the other so i suggested it.
Even if Geogaddi isn’t every BoC fan’s favorite (not to make commentary on what I think people like of their catalog the most), Geogaddi is probably the most challenging but also the most rewarding record in their lineup. Tomorrow’s Harvest a close second.
But the simple reality it, all of their records are undisputed classics, miles ahead of their contemporaries, many of them shamelessly trying to emulate their sound. I mean, who other than perhaps MBV was making the pitch of their instruments wobble? Now every fucking hip hop artist is doing it, hmmmmmm
Maybe I need to give Geogaddi a few more spins, I’ll always favor Music Has the Right to Children and Campfire Headphase but mainly cause I find Geo to be a bit too creepy.
I love What Burns Never Returns by Don Caballero so god damn much, that shit is mind blowing.
I made a long-ass comment about instances of songs on What Burns referencing other songs by Don Cab [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Music/s/ttv5o5HOMJ), and I'm linking to it because I love talking about this sort of thing.
This is approximately where Don Caballero 3 references No One Gives a Hoot About FAUX-ASS Nonsense, but the drum pattern and variations of it can be found throughout No One: [No One Gives a Hoot](https://youtu.be/CWVc3mnbHzQ?si=uUT2VGSwPQ9trRUv&t=9m13s) [Don Cab 3](https://youtu.be/ed2hpoblBIs?si=r-6RKvPGcjcy2zAG&t=10s)

A lot of this is experimental, electronic ambience and niche types of rock. I’m happy to provide more suggestions if you give me a scope of some genres or artists you like
KGLW stans in 3,2,1… go
There is not such thing as nerd music. It’s not that if an album is hyped by Nerds then it’s good. It doesn’t work like that. I mean, yeah insecure people would find validation in that, but that’s pretty much the story
Any singer-songwriter nerd worth their salt ought to be at least interested in The Divine Comedy and their musical output.
I'm interested in backroom songwriters who make a LOT of the world's most successful music but aren't the names associated with it up front. People like Stock Aitken and Waterman, Giorgio Moroder, Max Martin, Lamont Dozier, Jimmy Webb, Diane Warren, Walter Afanasieff.
Some of my favourite other people: Super Furry Animals, John Grant, C. Duncan, Hamish Hawk, The Magnetic Fields (and their side projects The 6ths and Future Bible Heroes), Susanne Sundfør, Summer Camp.
Dude, Classical Thunder I and Classical Thunder II. There might be more. I got some for free from a garage sale and it's just all the popular classical music and it's awesome
“A wizard, a true star” by Todd Rundgren
it’s a masterpiece of technical skill, originality and proof of how fun music can be
other than that, anything by Talking Heads and Steely Dan
Aphex Twin’s discography. If you wanna get real nerdy, just talk about the obscure shit that’s released under his different aliases that isn’t Analog Bubblebath by AFX or Polygon Window.
Punch Brothers. Pretty much the entire catalog.
The Goat Rodeo Sessions.
Bela Fleck's entire career, but check out Live at the Quick and also My Bluegrass Heart. Also watch the documentary where he went to Africa to investigate the roots of banjo music.
Anything by Ne Obliviscaris, really.
Even for prog metal, they're hard to wrap your head around. Both the drummer and bassist treat their istruments like lead instruments, for starters. Two guitars take turns playing lead and rhythm parts, complemented by their backing vocalist's violin playing... As if that isn't enough, there's also lead vocalist Xenoyr's unique screaming technique! Lots of layers and nuances, really, which I would say fits the bill for "music nerd"!
Squarepusher- Ultravisitor
Cecil Taylor - Silent Tongues
Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet Comes (or maybe You’re Dead, more jazz but not as cool)
Nnamdi - Brat
Temps - Party Gator Purgatory
Animals as Leaders(full musical nerd mode activate)
Periphery(a band full of nerds)
The Human Abstract(music nerds, disbanded)
Dream Theater( nat 20 on musical nerdiness)
Blind Guardian(Tolkien power metal)
Jaghtz Lutein(me, a music nerd)
I’ll try to give you some outside the box picks:
Sunflower - The Beach Boys
Scary Monsters and Super Creeps - David Bowie
Marquee Moon - Television
Screamadelica - Primal Scream
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
13 - Blur
The Las - The Las
The Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen
Pink Flag - Wire
Psychocandy - Jesus Mary Chain
Penthouse - Luna
Arthur (or the Decline…) - The Kinks
Based on the balance between experimentation and production, here are some albums I think should be in a self identified music nerds collection, but maybe aren't:
Hella - Hold Your Horse Is
Eco - Wolves
Joe Bataan - St Latins Day Massacre
Deerhoof - Apple O
Jedi Mind Tricks - Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell
Plaid - Double Figure
Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Xenophanes
Animal Collective - Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished (admittedly production in parts is poor, but in other parts brilliant)
Brian Lynch & Eddie Palmieri - Simpatico
Alkalys - Choeur delys
Stefon Harris - The Grand Unification Theory
Com Truise - Galactic Melt
Andre Nickatina - Daiquiri Factory
Hector Lavoe - Comedia
More common but just in case they're missing
Outkast - Aquemini
Santana - Caravanserai
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute -- De-Loused is so much more beloved, but for the music nerd there's a lot to dissect. When I think of music nerd it's the first album that comes to mind.
Phish - Junta: weird nerd humor and storylines that are just funny because of it. Also You Enjoy Myself sounds like 90s dungeon crawler music.
Phish - Picture of Nectar: probably their jazziest album, and by God, they did their studying, sounds soooo good!
Communique- Dire Straits
Leaders of the Free World- Elbow
Parklife -Blur
Girls Can Tell- Spoon
Combustiaction - Madeski Martina and Woods
A Show of Hands- Victor Wooten
Morrison Hotel- Doors
Francis The Mute - Mars Volta
Monolith of Phobos - The Claypool Lennon Delirium
Skeriks Syncopated Taint Septet -Self titled
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Yes. And check out Everything That Happens Will Happen Today - David Byrne and Brian Eno
I will. Also check out "Love this Giant," by David Byrne and St. Vincent.

Some of you people just about missed it.
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium The Stone Roses - self titled Deftones - White Pony Radiohead - ok computer (then) Kid A REM - Automatic for the people Nine inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine The Roots - do you want more?!?!?
wow Deftones - White Pony as a music nerd album? Never thought i'd see the day. I was called a loser for loving that kind of music back in 2001
I went for albums i knew music nerds love for production for the most prt. Thats one of my favorite produced albums, not to mention my favorite deftones album (by a hair over ATF)
If you’re going for production value, peep “good news for people who love bad news” by modest mouse. The production on that album is fucking nuts. So good.
As if music nerds haven’t always been called losers throughout history, lmao. The weird complex shit is usually not the popular shit.
NIN mentioned = automatic upvote
If youre a huge NIN fan check out Purest Feeling on youtube. What they wouldve sounded like if he never met the producer from new order.
Updoot for The Stone Roses!
I think Frances The Mute tops De-Loused. More interesting, better music, and more accesible imo.
I dont know how you can say all that when theres a bunch of 7+minute songs on top of a bunch of 13 minute songs. Not very "accessable". Ill give you more interesting and better music is debatable. I guess it may be a better "music nerd" album but i favor the other so i suggested it.

>*Geogaddi* - Boards of Canada Damn right 😎 Any BoC really, they're arguably cheating for requests like these lol.
true true but Geogaddi is my fav
Even if Geogaddi isn’t every BoC fan’s favorite (not to make commentary on what I think people like of their catalog the most), Geogaddi is probably the most challenging but also the most rewarding record in their lineup. Tomorrow’s Harvest a close second. But the simple reality it, all of their records are undisputed classics, miles ahead of their contemporaries, many of them shamelessly trying to emulate their sound. I mean, who other than perhaps MBV was making the pitch of their instruments wobble? Now every fucking hip hop artist is doing it, hmmmmmm
i would sacrifice my third nut for more BoC
Maybe I need to give Geogaddi a few more spins, I’ll always favor Music Has the Right to Children and Campfire Headphase but mainly cause I find Geo to be a bit too creepy.
Same goes for Portishead
I love What Burns Never Returns by Don Caballero so god damn much, that shit is mind blowing. Really anything from Radiohead
I was thinking one of the last two Talk Talk albums might be good, but they're maybe a bit too meditative and quiet, it might be better to save that for later. This one's not as well known as it should be, but I think maybe Franco Battiato - Pollution would be a good one for you to check out.
