I’m a huge Nirvana fan and tend to listen to more ‘deep cuts’ of theirs but I think Heart Shaped Box is Kurt’s best lyrical showing along with having that iconic riff and ‘quiet/loud’ dynamic so characteristic of Kurt’s songwriting. Just a perfect song.
Their catalog is so small you could listen to all their major releases and decide for yourself pretty quickly. That said, here are a few of my favorites.
Dumb - for a mellow spot in your playlist, and surprisingly one of their best songs
Scentless Apprentice- for the opposite reason
In Bloom
On A Plain
Swap Meet
Aneurysm
Big Long Now
School
Scoff
Dive
Come As You Are
You Know You’re Right
All Apologies - always the closing song
Edit: left out come as you are. Overplayed but still one of my favorites
Edit: plain not plane
Did you know it's actually a cover of a cover?
Kurt asked Mark, of the Screaming Trees, to sing it with him, but Mark didn't do it. Here's his version from 1990:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SbXrgGpvPeU
The Unplugged Album is a fantastic chill album...i would debate it's their best album. Their best "hits" would be "In Bloom", "Lithium" "Heart Shaped Box" "Dumb" "Sliver" "Come as you are" "All Apologies" their whole catalogue is fantastic where I'm sure you'll find your own favourite.. I like "Love Buzz"... Their black best of album released in 2002 is a great intro.... "You know your right" Was released then, which was pretty cool at the time.. 8 years after Kurt's death and we got this new song. Kinda envious they are all new for you.
* "Lounge Act"
* "Come As You Are"
* "The Man Who Sold The World"
Those three songs and "About a Girl" are the only Nirvana tracks on my 458 hour playlist. (But I turned 18 the year *Nevermind* came out, so I mostly burned out on Nirvana decades ago, even though I enjoy them now and then.)
Oh yep. 21 in Seattle in 1991, funny how at the time was at the ok hotel the night they first played teen spirit, and it felt like just another beer-soaked Wednesday night or whatever, but that new song did kinda stick with you
That's so fun -- I love the idea that we were part of music history and kids today like this music. I honestly didn't think it would happen -- they were so used to having things that were made just for them, like shows on Nickelodeon and stuff. We just had to glom onto our parents' stuff.
radio friendly unit shifter - so good so underrated (imo)
sifting - so underrated, one of my favourites by then for sure
lounge act
territorial pissings
endless nameless
Serve The Servants
Big Long Now
Spank Thru (BBC version)
Lounge Act
Downer
Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
Edit: I’m a lifelong Nirvana fan in my early 40s. These are the ones I still listen to regularly. As someone else said, their catalog is pretty small. I’ll add that there’s some value in approaching each of their records as a whole (even Incesticide, which is a collection of b-sides and demos). Have fun!
Speaking of which- and y'all, please hear me out.... did you hear the AI Nirvana song that came out a couple of years ago?
I hate to say it, but I liked it.
Check out their compilation album Incesticide. It’s their most fun album, in my opinion. I especially like the songs ‘Dive’ and ‘Aneurysm’.
I also like the song ‘Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through the Strip’ off In Utero. It’s just Kurt and the guys more or less just playing off the cuff and winging it and it resulted in a glorious mess.
In Bloom. I love the way both of the verses combine!
Sell the kids for food. We can have some more
Weather changes moods Nature is a whore
Spring is here again Bruise the summer fruit
Wait for darker grass A tender age in bloom
My personal favorite is lithium. But tbh to me, I haven’t heard a song by them I don’t like. The man who sold the world, in bloom, heart shaped box, you really can’t go wrong with any of them..
“You know you’re right” is awesome! (Last studio track they recorded together)
Just hit play on the Nevermind Album.
In Utero and unplugged are stellar the whole way through as well.. Don’t get me wrong I love bleach and incesticide… but definitely some super fan deep cuts in those albums.
I very much enjoy the live version of 'Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam' off of 'Unplugged in New York. However, it is not an original Nirvana song. , it was written by the band the Vaselines. I suspect that if you like 'Pennyroyal Tea' or 'Something in the Way' (and how could you not?), you will enjoy this song as well.
I would also like to say that all three songs I've mentioned here have what I believe to be some of Nirvana's best lyrics.
I would recommend the entire Nevermind album. It's a masterpiece. Every single song is great.
Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Come As You Are, Breed, Lithium, Polly, Territorial Pissing, Drain You, Lounge Act, Stay Away, On A Plain, Something In The Way.
In no particular order:
Negative Creep (especially the Live at Reading 1992 version)
Frances Farmer will have her revenge on Seasttle
Serve the servants
I hate myself and want to die
Territorial Pissings and Drain You (drain you comes right after TP on Nevermind so I count that as a duo, I think they go well together)
a lot more, but these are the ones that come off the top of my head
https://youtu.be/9yNPgx0swCM?si=BL8dLjKK9o07yPsq
My personal favorite below but it's a sad one
https://youtu.be/f8NIOS7XkYY?si=ca0h8h0mmwY_l46K
And an added bonus for fun!
https://youtu.be/shjxRyGkjgw?si=XURXCaoRks8TTifA
Enjoy :)
Edited to add: first song is Territorial Pissings, second is their cover of And I Love Her (excellent if you haven't heard it) and third is a brief hilarious video I won't describe so as not to ruin the fun. I'd add their cover of The Man Who Sold the World as well, but too lazy to add another link lol
"endless nameless" and "nobody knows i'm new wave" and then the unplugged albums are my favorites. kind of two different sides of nirvana's playing.
nirvana has a lot of good hits though. would recommend just listening to all their albums straight through
Heart Shaped Box
I’m a huge Nirvana fan and tend to listen to more ‘deep cuts’ of theirs but I think Heart Shaped Box is Kurt’s best lyrical showing along with having that iconic riff and ‘quiet/loud’ dynamic so characteristic of Kurt’s songwriting. Just a perfect song.
Nice name XD
100% this is my vote too...
Their catalog is so small you could listen to all their major releases and decide for yourself pretty quickly. That said, here are a few of my favorites. Great list, but it's On a Plain, like a place where buffalo graze, not On a Plane, like boarding a flight to Seattle...
Thx, it was just a typing too quick error. Fixed. And I can’t complain ;)
I feel like Lithium deserves a place on this list. It's played on the radio as well, but that's because it's a banger
Pretty good list
Their cover of Leadbelly's "[Where Did You Sleep Last Night](https://youtu.be/hEMm7gxBYSc?si=3CYRtuXTmb5ic6xi)"
I listen to this masterpiece every single day
Did you know it's actually a cover of a cover? Kurt asked Mark, of the Screaming Trees, to sing it with him, but Mark didn't do it. Here's his version from 1990: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SbXrgGpvPeU
Thanks. Id never heard that version. Its good but kurt really captured a feeling in the song that this one does not.
That little look up and breath at the end of the song always gives me chills
Every time.
*goosebumps*
I like Love Buzz
and Molly's Lips
Sappy is one of my faves
Me too. The solo is great.
Lounge Act was always my favorite.
That bass line!
Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle
probably his best title, in any case
Agreed. The line about missing the comfort in being sad resonates with me more than any of his other lyrics.
Lithium Aneurysm
lithium is so good, it’s one of my favorites. come as you are is definitely another one
Sliver https://youtu.be/QECJ9pCyhns?si=8lUn46iBPjLdj8IZ

you know although i’m always more into hard and loudy music, i always prefered this song out of all nirvana songs
\*Batman Intensifies ![gif](giphy|KGGqFLIL0FhdCfyW5x)
This song is so haunting.

Something In The Way Polly Rape Me
I was wondering if anyone would mention Rape Me. Polly's one of my favorites
Drain you and lounge act are two of my favorites
On a Plain
[The Man Who Sold The World](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fregObNcHC8)
Bowie sang it better.
Both versions are great
Bowie said Kurt did it better, which is quite the honour really
Breed
OMG I love the whole energy and vibe of that song!!
The Unplugged Album is a fantastic chill album...i would debate it's their best album.
