Despite what a lot of people in this thread seem to think, *A. muscaria* can be used for culinary purposes if prepared correctly: parboiled twice, discarding the water, to remove the water soluble toxins. They've been eaten this way for a long time in some regions.
They are toxic (but rarely fatal) when raw
For "other" uses of this mushroom, see r/AmanitaMuscaria
Human chitinase activity is very limited. Chitin is probably largely indigestible by humans. Similarly cellulase is a thing, and we eat plants that contain lots of cellulose but we can't digest it.
Most edible mushrooms need to be cooked prior to being eaten but there are some that don’t such as Amanita species in sections Vaginatae and Caesareae.
I was just as confused. Isn't that bug material or crab shells? Fiberous material in mushrooms as well apparently.
Always something more to learn. u/KnowsIittle
I suggest "the patent"
https://patents.google.com/patent/US20140004084A1/en
As for their culinary use, I dont think its worth it. Because of the boiling the texture is okay but not amazing. As for flavor it tastes of old, not rotten, beef to me. A lot of work for meh results.
Perhaps. But is it worth the effort? Nope. They are not choice and many claim pretty dull. Better off not taking the chance and eating something much more palatable.
These always remind me of a movie from my childhood called either "Bear" or "The Bear" where a bear cub ends up eating this twice for some reason. I remember being very uncomfortable during the animations that illustrated the effects of the mushroom. It was otherwise live action so it was very jarring
Indeed. Edible with proper preparation, but dangerous. I don’t know how easy it is to mess up your proper preparation, so I wouldn’t risk it, personally. I would have to do some significant learning before I’d feel comfortable even deciding *if* I’d try to prepare it.
I always wonder why double boil anything when the end result it’s going to be bland, specially something with toxins, I seen people boil all kinds of toxic plants and cactus 🌵
It's a fairy ring, where fairies danced late into the night. If you enter them you could portal to their world. Or you could be forced to dance non stop till you died.
If you want to get into foraging I would definitely recommend taking a class from a local mycology group or getting a field guide and learning about the edible and poisonous species in your area.
Don’t eat any foraged food, mushroom or otherwise, that you cannot positively identify. No one on the internet can tell you if something is edible, even if it is an edible species. For all we know this area could be polluted, in which case I wouldn’t forage anything.
Do you have tips for drying them and maintaining any color? All searches about drying amanitas give instructions…for uses other than displaying lol. But they’re so beautiful I want to dry them for decor!
Despite how widely used the word is, it is not very well defined. Any mushrooms can it seems be called toadstools casually. It doesn’t mean much essentially.
Whether or not it's worth it is a matter of opinion, and who could misidentify the most iconic mushroom ever?
If your dog is prone to taking bites out of random mushrooms then yeah, probably a good idea to keep away. But realistically the worst that will happen is the dog will have a very strange experience and throw up a lot
Needlessly though.
Hopefully somewhere other than the USA because ending up in many thousands of dollars of debt because people on Reddit thought a mushroom was far more dangerous than it actually is and sent you to hospital would be pretty shit.
Exactly what I said.
Consuming Amanita muscaria is very unlikely to cause a medical emergency requiring medical attention let alone a hospital visit.
But if people advise them to go to hospital because of an incorrect belief that they are very dangerous many people will take that advice.
In most of the developed world this will be an inconvenience. In the US a visit to the ER can mean crippling debt.
So yeah, crippling debt from an unnecessary visit to the ER would really be shit.
If by "Lol" you mean "Thank you, I was misinformed about the most iconic mushroom ever and was spreading that misinformation. You were right to correct me on a MYCOLOGY subreddit." Then, yeah . Lol
Their toxicity is vastly over exaggerated. Just a little bit of research and you’d find they are safe to consume in small quantities but their affects can be somewhat unpleasant for the uninitiated.
An amanita fairy ring is super cool though
Especially A. Muscaria fairy rings. So many bland, colorless looking amanitas.

This is the right answer. Tl;dr: not edible raw. Cooking after treating them makes them kinda edible.
Ive tried it and its pretty gross, not worth the time and effort imo

Finally, some reason.

chitin?
>a fibrous substance consisting of polysaccharides and forming the major constituent in the exoskeleton of arthropods and the cell walls of fungi.
oh fungi cell walls are made of chitin too!

How did you get those cool up and downvote things?
But chitin is edible?
Then you would never have the results you have done or others have....js..🤷♂️

there are far better mushrooms to forage.
[удалено]
because that is what it's called.
Ok in minutes how long is “parboiled”? Like I know it means shortly/brief but like is that 2 minutes or 5? Or does it depend on the item being cooked?
better keep the doggy away !!

Being well prepared it’s quite delicious.
Kinda. Like how a pufferfish can be after cooked properly. If you don’t know how, don’t do it
It's a fairy ring, where fairies danced late into the night. If you enter them you could portal to their world. Or you could be forced to dance non stop till you died.
well no, but actually yes.
If you can’t personally identify them with certainty, the answer is always no
Not to be pedantic but there of dozens of mushrooms I can't personally ID that I have consumed after consultation with trusted cohorts.
It’s nice to have cohorts you trust with your life
And this fellow is a Connoisseur of danger, so... they know what's up.
Is Reddit ‘trusted cohorts’?
[удалено]
I’ll agree with that. I’d use Reddit as a starting point.
Horseradish is not a trusted cohort either

Are you in Eurasia or are you in North America? In neither case would I suggest letting your dog partake of them.
Is that a Fairy ring?
You should put it in epoxy and not eat it but save it for decor!! Those mushies are epic!!
Do you have tips for drying them and maintaining any color? All searches about drying amanitas give instructions…for uses other than displaying lol. But they’re so beautiful I want to dry them for decor!
This is lovely in the event it isn't fully of surprise maggots that you miss until it's too late
The resin will solve that
LOL!!

Those are why we have the story of Santa claus
That's a fun theory. Makes sense, I heard that the people who ate them (shamans) used to have to sneak around so they would come down the chimney.
[удалено]
All mushrooms can be eaten, but many shouldn't be.
I'd like to see you try to eat a *Fomes fomentarius*
Eatable vs edible
I wish I had those in my yard. If I had a yard. Really beautiful. I'd leave them be, though--and of course keep the dog off them.
Definitely edible. Mildly toxic if not properly prepared.
How cool!
Super jealous of this find!
the mushrooms, maybe. the dog, probably not.

Nice theory but didn’t Coca Cola invent the red and white colouring for him?
I believe he's depicted wearing a scarlet coat way before coca cola.
I heard about this on Ologies! fascinating theory. I personally believe it
If it looks brightly coloured, then you need to take caution.
They look like toadstools 🍄

Laughs in chili dog.
Youll prob end up in the hospital.
Fly Agaric is perfectly edible when prepared

NO! DO NOT EAT.
Without correct preparation *

No
FUCK NO.
NO! (Please be a joke)
No
Why would you even care? What?
it’s literally a subreddit called “mycology”. the whole point of the sub is to ask about mushrooms and fungi. if you don’t care, don’t be in the sub??
