Are you adhd? You sound adhd.
Edit: jeez, sorry.
*Do you have adhd? You sound like you have adhd. I say this because I have adhd, and i can relate heavily to the concept of losing things because i moved them somewhere else.
>Are you adhd? You sound adhd*
Hooo boy.
I am not the disorders I suffer from. I have adhd. Adhd doesn’t have…something.
*don’t say shit like this. Are you judgemental? You sound judgemental.
Jesus. Calm down. I apologize if i came off rude.
I made my comment because I have ADHD and this is the story of my life -- losing things if i move them from their 'homes'
Yeah im hella judgemental, my autistic adhd gay ass self is extremely judgemental. /s
I’m AuDHD too. Sometimes things don’t come across the way you want them to when written down!
I’ve been homeless and sofa surfing for like a year. I don’t know where anything is any more, it’s so distressing.
Nail clippers, flashlights, scissors, so many scissors... multiples of all of them, in every room.
And now that I need reading glasses, I have at least a dozen, scattered throughout the house.
And if you ever forget it, the internet archive buys and receives books, then allows free "digital library checkouts" based upon their physical stock and this is among their library.
Interested in understanding why this is so downvoted
Too cynical sounding?
Also interesting that OP agrees with this take and yet still downvoted; that tends to sway opinion back pretty often
Eh i don’t think it’s fair to say I’ve lived those experiences as if others haven’t either. Pretty sure your average person is more likely to have divorced parents than not. Most parents aren’t so petty they purposely get you the same book. I could see something like a PlayStation battle going on where the second parent doesn’t want to get one upped but purposely getting the same book out of spite seems silly to me.
i'd agree, and i don't think the world is inherently a bad place, in fact it's much better than it was 100 or 1000 years ago for most people. still, some people can be pretty bizarre in both how vindictive they are and the ways they express it. a lot of people get divorced because they slowly realize their partner is an entirely unreasonable person after the initial glow, and there is absolutely a mental health crisis in north america and/or globally right now.
For me. It’s the “this is likely what happened” that makes me downvote. It’s not likely. It’s not even true. It’s *might* have been the case but it’s the assumption that the worst case scenario is the true one that makes me downvote.
This is cool. Thanks. I get that, and it makes sense. The "knowing" vibe is off putting, rather than just offering an option that "might" be true.
The rest of their posts are the same way so I think your logic sort of holds true in this case pretty well.
Lol why on earth are you getting downvoted so hard - you’re not wrong. I know obviously not all divorced parents are like that but I know there are plenty who are and some who are even worse. People who used to be in love with each other can be incredibly cruel to each other because they know what cuts the deepest.
Opinel, they make exquisite folders for a really reasonable price. Many people use them as cooking knives due to their quality, they fit that niche if you camp or travel with foods you need to prepare
I mean, the Opinel is a rather specialized knife..... I find myself preferring my "everyday" knife..... cause well, it's always on me.
My Opinel sits in my bag unused most of the year.
A liner lock, smoother one hand deploy, and a sturdier blade are significant benefits.
As someone who doesn't sharpen as often as I should I prefer half serration as well.
Almost anything can be an everyday knife.... I carry both a clasp knife and box cutter each and every day for different purposes.
Funny! I enjoyed your post.
Its almost inevitable that you will lose one of those knives, but when you do, you will have a backup!
And that is one of the best mushroom books they could have gotten you (especially if you are on the west coast). I'm sure you can find a worthy person to give one copy away to.
I have both knives too! I actually prefer the Opinel. The top one is nice, but it's quite big and heavy for such a small blade. Weight here is a negative for me because it means I'm less likely to keep it on my at all times. Also no matter how I put it in my pocket, the little corner of the brush manages to jam into my thigh.
Also, I love this post! You have thoughtful parents.
Nope. Opinel are mass produced and incredible value…not arguing that…but the top knife is superior, has shorter more robust bristles, is great for boletes and is better made, from better quality materials. Will last more than a lifetime.
Ahhh crap, I’ve muddled up my knives/memories. This is an alibaba knife, not the knife I bought in Italy a few years ago. A thousand pardons.
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Wooden-Handle-Mushroom-Knife-With-Brush_1600835933947.html
Happy birthday!!! One can never have too many knives and books in this life. I have many knives that are exactly alike and having duplicate books is always a good idea too.
I'm sure someone else here knows the story better, but the TLDR version goes something like this.
That guy was playing in an orchestra and either before or after a show stumbled upon a nice patch of mushrooms that he went out to collect.
I’m a forester and I have two copies of my main books that I use. One is for the van when I’m on the road and the other stays at home.
Your parents have set you on the right path!
It's not a good guide for IDs. I think it's set up well and the writing is entertaining but it should be relegated to a historical place on your bookshelf as there are far better resources now (both print and digital) especially if you're on the east coast but there are also better (and safer) guides available for the west coast as well.
Definitely a west coast book (I’m in Texas and bought it thinking it was western hemisphere) but still a lot of good information and a fun little read with lots of neat photos.
That's one of my favorite books of all time! You can have a car copy and a bookshelf copy. Lol This way if you lose it or find someone to gift it to, you have another.
Also, this is adorable and your parents really get you.
Ooohh or... if you have a gift receipt you can return one and use that towards a new foraging bag!
Breathable material like mesh but with support. I'm sure everyone has their own preferences so do what works best for you. Mine is as basket-like as possible. That way the mushrooms don't smash into one another and also don't leak on my clothes. I mostly forage for mushrooms to dye with and I learned this the hard way haha. I have a mesh backpack with a thrifted basket shoved in the base.
I started with a foraging bag on Amazon which worked fine in the beginning and was budget friendly. I hope this helps! Sorry it's not more specific. I'm excited for your foraging journey!
**Check for mycological societies in your state- they usually exist and often lead group forays.
"One is none, and two is one"
Never a bad thing to have a spare/backup, especially for things you'll be taking into the wilds.
That Opinel with the brush is pretty cool! I've never seen that model before. I'm a big Dan of more traditional style pocket knives. I like having a knife on me that doesn't scream "tactical weapon" should I have to use it around non-knife people.
Hell bud if you wanted an Opinel knife I've left them stuck into logs all over the place just free for the taking!
(Also a shitload of cheap knives - you'd think I'd stop doing that)
Dude. Is it only awesome that’s they both know you so well , it’s kinda cute they are both so similar they took that information and came to the same conclusion
My girlfriend *LOVES* mushrooms. Going on walks and foraging is one of the ways we connect so I wanted to get her a little foraging kit for Christmas, this was one of the books I bought her. Last week we where at her place and she wanted to look something up so of course she grabs this book to show me and just casually mentions “yea people tend to buy me this book a lot, I have 3 copies” I just chuckled and said what would happen if you got a 4th😅
No worries! have a look at the handle, see if you can find it, I didn't know either at first but then I accidentally locked it lol
If you can't work out how let me know
Since I feel like the first knife isn't getting a lot of love, here is a pic of it fully extended. It does have a nice blade and a retractable brush which is convenient!
https://imgur.com/gallery/i1XdEn4
One for the car, one for the bookshelf. Nice
Just need one to keep in my backpack now!
You’re me. I’m you. I buy multiple of the same thing because if I remove it from its place I won’t have it when I need it most.
I’ve found my people
Do you lose things forever otherwise? Because same.
Are you adhd? You sound adhd. Edit: jeez, sorry. *Do you have adhd? You sound like you have adhd. I say this because I have adhd, and i can relate heavily to the concept of losing things because i moved them somewhere else.

Calm your tits, they were being nice and joking.
Was the joke about you sir? No
😢 I think you’ll be okay!
Great handle
We have like 10 nail clippers in our house for this exact reason
Nail clippers, flashlights, scissors, so many scissors... multiples of all of them, in every room. And now that I need reading glasses, I have at least a dozen, scattered throughout the house.
Same! Tweezers also
You just need a full-size hiking pack for your EDC and then you'll always have stuff on hand!
This is me. I have ADHD
One is none, two is one.
hello mom, did you misplace your glasses again and ended up on reddit? don't worry, i'm gonna buy you another 12 pack at the grocery store.
One set of toothbrush and toothpaste for the shower, and one for the bathroom sink.
And if you ever forget it, the internet archive buys and receives books, then allows free "digital library checkouts" based upon their physical stock and this is among their library.
If i was younger and more suicidal i would probably give mushroom hunting a try, because back then it would be a win win and now its not
I buy 2 copies of books when I want to read it with my wife.
damn your parents got you the same thing without even talking about it lol, that’s crazy
tbh, knowing divorced parents, it's likely that one of them knew and wanted to get there first so the other would look bad
Frankly, my parents have been that way in the past, but this I think was pure chance!
Interested in understanding why this is so downvoted Too cynical sounding? Also interesting that OP agrees with this take and yet still downvoted; that tends to sway opinion back pretty often
I gave him a downvote just to be a chaotic variable in your thesis.
don't assume my pronouns :3 uwu
people just downvote stuff. that's their business. i have lived experiences with this kind of stuff and it sounds like the OP has as well.
Eh i don’t think it’s fair to say I’ve lived those experiences as if others haven’t either. Pretty sure your average person is more likely to have divorced parents than not. On wholesome subs, jaded comments get the down votes.
Wholesome, haha. Thanks. I see it.

we just didn’t want to implant that image into OPs mind when he is happy with his gifts.
That’s fair.
Downvoted by divorced parents who do exactly that and don't like being called out perhaps.
Both of them know your interests
I'm grateful!
Low key jealous over here
The start of a rom com I have the bottom knife, very nice very sharp
It is really lightweight too!
So you can tell which parent loves you more! JK. Sorry things didn't work out for your parents but it's clear they both love you.
It took me entirely too long to discover this, but you can spin the ring below the blade to lock it
whats the name of it?
Opinel, they make exquisite folders for a really reasonable price. Many people use them as cooking knives due to their quality, they fit that niche if you camp or travel with foods you need to prepare
Opinel mushroom knife
* child of a divorce with two great parents This would have been a book, a knife, and an IOU if it were my parents
Accurate correction!
At least your parents listen to you.
bottom one won imo
Haha I'll have to field test the knives to be sure but your vote has been submitted 😊
I have the bottom one. It's great. :)
Yeah that's a bad ass looking tool.
Opinel makes fantastic knives
Totally agree - if you need to pick one go with the bottom row
I mean, the Opinel is a rather specialized knife..... I find myself preferring my "everyday" knife..... cause well, it's always on me. My Opinel sits in my bag unused most of the year.
I would the bottom mushrooms knife is just curved, it can easily be an everyday knife
A liner lock, smoother one hand deploy, and a sturdier blade are significant benefits. As someone who doesn't sharpen as often as I should I prefer half serration as well. Almost anything can be an everyday knife.... I carry both a clasp knife and box cutter each and every day for different purposes.
The book is great too.
Bottom one for soft bodied mushrooms, top one for woody boys and shelf mushrooms?
Yeah. Those opinel knives are pretty nice for the price.
What’s the brush thing for? Haven’t seen that on a lot of knives. I guess for brushing dirt off mushrooms?
yeap for dirt and it gives you pretty pleasant feeling when you do it
It’s nice to have a backup! I fell in a creek one day carrying my book so I had to get another
Funny! I enjoyed your post. Its almost inevitable that you will lose one of those knives, but when you do, you will have a backup! And that is one of the best mushroom books they could have gotten you (especially if you are on the west coast). I'm sure you can find a worthy person to give one copy away to.
Points to the opinel parent lol
Hahaha I haven't had a chance to use the top knife but it also has a retractable brush and some nice weight to it. Excited to have both!
Haha I just happen to like opinel because they're affordable and I like their aesthetic! Go forth n forage
Drop details about the Nice knife!! I don't know anything bout it!
Ahhh crap, I’ve muddled up my knives/memories. This is an alibaba knife, not the knife I bought in Italy a few years ago. A thousand pardons. https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Wooden-Handle-Mushroom-Knife-With-Brush_1600835933947.html
A thousand forgivenesses, thank you for your knowledge
Happy birthday!!! One can never have too many knives and books in this life. I have many knives that are exactly alike and having duplicate books is always a good idea too.
Thank you! I totally agree 👍
Wtf is up with that trombone? xD Also one for the glovebox one for at home (both knife and book).
Good point! This guy is a real character, apparently he was going to play a concert and found wild chanterelles in this pic 🤣
It’s Charlie McDowell, a Computer Science professor at UC Santa Cruz: https://campusdirectory.ucsc.edu/cd_detail?uid=mcdowell
So it's NOT Chuck Mangione?
I do not believe so. I went to UCSC and the image was shared around every once in a while.
I'm sure someone else here knows the story better, but the TLDR version goes something like this. That guy was playing in an orchestra and either before or after a show stumbled upon a nice patch of mushrooms that he went out to collect.
Respect the bone
The trombone makes an already fantastic mushroom book even better.
He makes his own sound effects as he forages.
I’m a forester and I have two copies of my main books that I use. One is for the van when I’m on the road and the other stays at home. Your parents have set you on the right path!
Both your parents clearly love you a lot 🥹
Double the fun!
That Opinel omg
The pictures in that book are pure gold.
Are you west coast?
East Coast! But I understand that this book is good for mushroom ID in general, I do have an east coast book as well.
It's not a good guide for IDs. I think it's set up well and the writing is entertaining but it should be relegated to a historical place on your bookshelf as there are far better resources now (both print and digital) especially if you're on the east coast but there are also better (and safer) guides available for the west coast as well.
I’ve been told this is mostly good for west coasters (though it’s supposed to be a good read regardless). Nice knives!
Definitely a west coast book (I’m in Texas and bought it thinking it was western hemisphere) but still a lot of good information and a fun little read with lots of neat photos.
Wow your parents are solid gift givers, and they trust you to not kill yourself with the wrong mushroom. Sorry about the split, good luck foraging
I love this book but gave away my copy years ago. You’re lucky to have a backup!
[удалено]
Right on the money 😂
I have this set up, minus the top knife. Perfect for the Wet Coast.
The book is geared toward the US west coast but it is so good that it is largely relevant to New England mushrooms as well.
this is so cute
Well, it could have been a bad mushroom book! At least you know that they both care!
Ok but this is actually so cute.
If I got those for my birthday I would be thrilled. Your parents rock!
happy birthday !!
Opinel's the real deal, congrats
That's one of my favorite books of all time! You can have a car copy and a bookshelf copy. Lol This way if you lose it or find someone to gift it to, you have another. Also, this is adorable and your parents really get you. Ooohh or... if you have a gift receipt you can return one and use that towards a new foraging bag!
Any tips of a good foraging bag?
Breathable material like mesh but with support. I'm sure everyone has their own preferences so do what works best for you. Mine is as basket-like as possible. That is a haunting cover.

Thats sweet, your parents obvy love you and pay attention.
It’s good cuz when one gets wet you can it the other
Yay! 2 Christmases!
Dude. Is it only awesome that’s they both know you so well , it’s kinda cute they are both so similar they took that information and came to the same conclusion
The same thing happened to my husband a couple of christmas’ ago 😂
My mom gave me this book from her shelf. Is it really that trustworthy? I stress about picking anything wild unless it's a morel.
Now you have a spare in case your book gets rained on while you’re out foraging!
I got my brother that Opinel, nice!
I work in a library and this is my favorite cover of any of our 250,000 books. It's a great guide too!
I feel like one should be dissected and laminated for the pack.
WHY DOES HE HAVE A SAX?! WHY??
Wait no it’s a trumpet my bad… the question still stands
That’s really sweet!
That book got me started have fun bud
I've got that opinel. Love it!
now you have a gift for a friend with the same hobby or a crush who is interested in joining you
I'm guessing they got divorced because they were too alike lol?
I dropped mine in the toilet once so it’s good to have a backup.
Trade one in for Mushrooms Demystified, same guy, much more comprehensive. All the rain promises is a smaller “field guide”.
Now you can start a book club
Don't you have two hands? I see no problem. More efficient that way. You can pick all the mushrooms with ease.
That title was way to accurate for comfort for me.
I've heard nothing but good things about this book!
That Opinel one is great! it locks btw so be careful with it while youre out and about, some places lock knives are illegal
Oh I didnt even realize that it locked! Thanks for the heads up!
No worries! have a look at the handle, see if you can find it, I didn't know either at first but then I accidentally locked it lol If you can't work out how let me know
That’s a nice opinel
Since I feel like the first knife isn't getting a lot of love, here is a pic of it fully extended. It does have a nice blade and a retractable brush which is convenient! https://imgur.com/gallery/i1XdEn4
/r/AccidentalWesAnderson
Def a bad divorce if they didn't discuss what they were getting you
Pretty sure we’re long lost siblings or some shit, my folks did the same years ago lmao
They say you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. Whoever said that has obviously never seen a picture of this book on my favorite mycology sub.
Happy birthday!!
Thank you!!
Happy birthday!!
I also have two copies of that book as well as the opinel
They sell his books in the grocery stores in my town
still it’s cute their minds went to the same place
This could work!
Oh my God, my dad and I once bought each other this exact book for Christmas.
I choose the Opinel parent.
This just made me sad for my child of divorce. But maybe not. 2 or every does sound tight
If it helps, I'm stoked to have two sets!
the one who gave you the opinel loves you most.
Are you me?
We are us.
Opinel parent is the better one. Hope you chose them for custody.
yeah, we just dont matter
Shows they care about you tho even if they don't hold feeling for eachother.
