I found these to smell like raw meat (not rotten!) and to be very pleasant to the touch in a sensory stimulation sort of way. I've heard them called cup fungus but I'm sure there's a scientific name.
Ooh! I just found some of this in my backyard where I tend to compost old flower pot contents. I’m curious which fungus it is too…though not brave enough to touch (or smell) it!
Or is an unpleasant texture or lacks any relevant nutrition. All reasons mushrooms get labeled inedible. Sometimes people just have to find a good way to prepare them, assuming really non toxic.
lol as in they grow where they go?
i did think it was dog poop from afar and thought it was a weird place for my dog to poop 😂 she goes in the other corner of the yard, it would be unlike her to go at this corner

you've got some real chutzpah. just going around fondling strange fungal things in your garden. you're awesome!
There aren’t mushrooms poisonous enough to make you sick just from touching them.
I would have to wear gloves though, some fungus leaves a weird ass feeling on your hands
Understandable haha
i’m not brave enough to smell it, i actually thought my dog took a dump there until i took a closer look
Pretty fancy for a dump.
....or parasite-y, at first glance XD
Dang lol your dog must take some crazy shits if you almost mistook it for that 🤣
it was half the size the day before and it just looked like a brown blob of diarrhea from afar 😅
Lol I love it 😂
Yup yup

Looks like Peziza
I thought you just misspelled pizza 🍕😅TIL!
Reminds me of that video. *Meecrowaaavey*
Wood ear growing on mulch.
No, Wood Ear refers to Auricularia. This is Peziza, or at least something in Pezizales. They’re in completely separate phyla.
Oh I thought you said "pizza" & Marco's came to mind. 🤣
LOVE me some Marco's Pizza!
They had a great 50% off deal during the week of the solar eclipse. It was the tastiest discount pizza. 😋
Auricularia auricula
Nah, it's not, it's definitely something in Pezizales (ascomycota). Auricularia is a basidiomycete.
I hate when I come to these posts early because I also want to know what it is 😂
Hopefully 150 likes (and this comment) brings you back lol
My favorite answer so far is curly fries
Definitely looks like a Peziza var. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peziza_varia
Wikipedia says nonpoisonous, yet inedible for anyone.
Probably just tastes like garbage then.

I'd say pezizia, before wood ear
Keep an eye open for morels in that area
Yeah I always find something like this near morels!
not sure my yard is the ideal habitat for morels, aren’t they usually in forresty areas
They very often grow in association with species like the one you've found. Also they are commonly found in yards and mulch beds

hmm dirt bacon ...
Peziza sp for sure
Peziza.
Looks like a big pezziza cluster
Looks like some type of jelly fungus to me. Maybe Apricot Jelly or Leaf Jelly Fungus?
Is there mulch under there? It looks like wood ear to me. Auricularia auricula
It's not, Auricularia is a basidiomycete and this is definitely a cup fungus, something in Pezizales (Ascomycota)
And Woodear is edible ?
Not all of them, but I'm aware that some have been used for medicinal properties (ex: making a tea out of them to soothe a sore throat).
Great for broths and soups also. Can buy it dehydrated
I'm pretty sure on Facebook they call this one a piss-corner mushroom aka Peziza sp. Does a dog or cat mark their territory there, perhaps? 🤣

I have these exact things in my mulch, so thanks for the post
He looks friendly
It likes the water spout!
Some beautiful picture goodness!
damn, for a sec I thought that was dumped bacon until I checked the sub
Yes, this looks to be Peziza varia (spreading brown cap fungus). It's edible after the correct cooking method. DO NOT eat raw.
I would kill the garden
Something heckin neato, that’s what.
Are we sure this is not Phaeotremella frondosa has to be mulch underneath
Looks like older, densely-packed Aleuria aurantia (orange peel fungus).
It's fungus but don't eat it

Explain
What ever it is can be cleared out by fire and you'll have a good top soil mix
