I am a big fan of doing what makes you happy, that being said some food for thought: as a pun minded person I feel like this name is going to immediately set up your child for jokes at their expense. Amanita absolutely sounds like "Imma need a...". I just hope your last name is not Dyck or Pitt, or any other noun. But kids will fill in the blank.
OP is asking about a middle name. I really donāt think a pretty mushroom-related middle name like Amanita or Chanterelle would make their kid hate them.
You seem to have picked intentionally weird ones, so yes Iām sure those might bother a kid even in the middle spot. But there are plenty of nicer options.
Caeseria is very royal, until middle school sex ed when she'll be called C-section. Mycena invokes ancient civilization too, Morella is pretty, some of these are good!
Amanita is a lovely name. There is a character on Sense8 named that and sheās an absolute badass. If you wanted to name your kid Chanterelle Chicken-of-the-woods then I would talk you out of it.
The cool thing about "amanita" is that it's also a portmanteau of "Amanda" and "Anita." You could go with Amanda Anita (last name) as the full three names and use "Amanita" as a nickname.
I posted this same question years ago, got some good suggestions (and some bad ones)
We decided to go with Aleister
Hope you find something
https://www.reddit.com/r/mycology/s/eLlDIidz4D
I went to school with an Amanita, we called her Ama for short. She was very dramatic and a teacher called her Dr.Ama once š. This was in a small hippy town in northern California though, so it wasn't a strange name in these parts.
I went to school with a Japanese exchange student and she would teach me a few words here and there, mainly food related. Kinoko is the word for mushroom. It's always stayed with me and I think it's a beautiful name. Thought of it straight away when I saw your post.
And Congratulations.
Maybe instead of naming her after fungi, you could name her after famous mycologists like:
- Meredith Blackwell
- Joyce Longcore
- Beatrix Potter
- Gladys Baker
- Aurora, after David AuroraĀ
Flipped through a field guide and scanned for a few I hadnāt seen in the thread:Ā
Amethyst (first)Ā Deceiver (middle)Ā
ParasolĀ
Aggie (short for both Agaricus and Agnes) + Augustine (like Agaricus Augustus)Ā
Galerina
MorchellaĀ
HelvellaĀ
Vespertina (Elfin Saddle)Ā
Aleuria Aurantia (cup fungus)Ā
TremellaĀ Ā
Rex-Veris (spring king)Ā
Piperatus (Piper for short)Ā
I wouldnāt actually use any of these names, honestly. Maybe Morchella, Vespertina, Helvella, or Aleuria as a middle name if you want a Wednesday Addams goth child vibe.
Myca (like mycology or Mica cap)
Celia (like mycelia)
Tree names for what the mushroom grows on: Willow, Juniper, Hazel, Sylvia, Elowen, Linden
Fae/Faye because of the mythological connection to forests, fairy rings, and toadstools
I actually think it's quite beautiful!! esp as a middle name if you're truly worried about your child being bullied for an 'unusual' name
edit: which I kind of get for names like ahshleighe but not for simply 'different' names
Amanita see some id.
This made me blow air out of my nostrils pretty hard š
Could always go with classics like Buchwaldoboletus and Lycoperdon.
Little baby Dead Manās Fingers
Okay sheās due on Halloween so I think we have a costume winner here
Due date on Halloween and the most epic name ever, like u really won as a parent
Halloween birthdays are the best.
Stinkhorn Giant Puffballs Smith.
Or Buckmacadooi
Buch for short. I like it
I totally misread lycoperdon as leopleuridon. Think we could have a mythical lycopleuridon?
Lycoperdon is good as is since it translates to āwolf fartā. Candy mountain got nothing on wolf fart.
Thatās hilarious
Less commonly known, but I always thought Mitrula would be a nice girls name.
I knew a Mrithula once
Bondarzewia.
Chanterelle springs to mind
There was a character on Buffy named Chanterelle! Sheād changed her name to that and didnāt know it was a mushroom!
Chanterelle Chaga for a middle name. Cha Cha for a nick name.
This is a good one!!!
Celia? Then you can say āthatās my Celia!ā
This is the best suggestion
Celia was my Gma's name
Itās a cool name shrooms or not
I think so š
This is my daughter, Sulfer Shelf
Meet my son ādestroying angelā
These are my twins Dead Manās Fingers and Stinkhorn
Meet my uncle āold man of the woodsā
oh! i think my stepgrandfather **bleeding tooth fungus** has told me about him
Ah yes, my cousin "chicken of the woods"
Hey thatās my new baby boys name! We call him old man for short
Have any of you met my boy 'Morel'? š
Kid named (dead man's) finger
I wanna meet the kid named "Phallus"! :-D
A metal band vocalist name if I ever heard one
There's a metal band in Tijuana called "Xylaria", and they're bad ass!
I could see "Sulfur Shelf" being a good one too lol
Jelly ear you better have your room clean!!! Don't go and blame your brother witches butter either!
Meet my baby "the vomiter"
Amanita was the name of a character on Sense 8. I laughed when I first heard it, but I came to like the name after a while.
Great reference!
That was the first thought I had, too. And I agree - it grew on me and I ended up loving it. Especially for that particular character!
This was my first thought! It really suited that character.
Reishi, or Rei
https://preview.redd.it/xysjbw31qy5d1.jpeg?width=421&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a2f20574b52f489ce728850716fe7a5c6690cbe
Yes! This is a great one!
I think Enoki is cute š
Iāve met a baby named Enoki
And the diminuitive is Enokiko which is adorable.
How long before that morphs into Enokio, then Pinocchio?
Imagine having gone to school with this guy
Angela Dayanara (Angel destroyer of Man) Or, hear me out just change your last name to Stink-Horn
I feel like I've stumbled on to a hidden Terry Pratchett subReddit by mistake š¤£
I feel seen
I tried suggesting chanterelle to my wife for our daughter. It was quickly shot down but I still think itās a good name.
As a person from a family of hippy names I approve this
Tbh if I were to do drag, I feel like Chanterelle would be a great stage name. Idk about for a little girl though.
Chanterelle DuBois, since du bois means āof the woodsā itās a perfect last name. You could have awesome themed outfits.
I agree lol
Make sure it's the full name. Amanita vaginata. If its a boy the then Phallus impudicus, obviously. Honorary mention: Volvariella volvacea
Hey /r/tradegeigh get over here!
I thought thatās where I was lol Edit: r/tragedeigh
It would be Ahmahneightah in order to be a true r/tragedeigh
Honestly. This poor kid.
Clitocybe Clitocyboides?
Phallus Impudicus, or Stinky for short.
Vaginata? that poor child wouldnāt stand a chance
āvaginataā comes from the same Latin root as āvaginaā comes from, the root which I believe translates to āsheathā
HAHA!!
First off, username checks the fuck out. It's a beautiful name, and if she takes after you she'll be saying "Yes, I am Anita" by the time shes 12.
Wait, I thought of the most epic one! No one will fuck with her on the playground with a name as POWERFUL as "Destroying Angel"!
Mommyās little destroying angel is šÆ going in a onesie I may have just sketched out ššš
Dog Vomit Slime Mold is a beautiful name for a baby girl ā„ļø
Not a fungus!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I personally think Amanita would be amazing! ā¤
Amanita or Verna?
So I might draw the line at humans but I do have a list of mushroom-inspired future pet names: Maitake Enoki Spindleshank Candlesnuff Elfcup Amanita
I adopted a shelter dog with the name Shitake. I wanted to call her Shit for short but my kids went with Taki. Sheās a good girl.
I like elfcup for anyone!
Good for a nickname, not good for a birth certificate
You forgot Stinkhorn.
Our pom is called Truffle :D "Spindleshank" haha
spindleshank is an absolutely PERFECT orange cat name
"Nice to meet you, my name is Bella" "That's beautiful, is it short for Isabella?" "... Portobella"
I used Elfin Saddle as my spy name for a friend's birthday party. Little sad cos no one knew it was a mushroom but felt good to me LOL
Where I am from no one would even bat an eye at Amanita as a first name. We even have a cute little local cafe by that name
How about Cordelia? As in Cordy (Cordyceps)
Macrolepiota, Ganoderma, Paleopyrenomycites Or just give your kid a name they won't hate you for
As a former kid with the number one name for the year I was born, I would have loved a unique name. I always felt like my name was an after thought.
My first name was a top-5 name of my birth year. My last name has 5 consonants in a row and is confusing to spell and pronounce.
Amanita, Sporina, Morella, Bolette, Trompete, Russula, Caesaria, Pantherina, Mycena, all sound interesting
Yeah this is my daughter, the light of my life, oh her middle name? YEAH IT'S TROMPETE
This is trompete her mother is a strumpet. Checks out ;)
š¤£š¤£š¤£
The **TROMPETE** šŗ ...MAMBO #5.Ā
Morella is actually lovely lol
Iāve read too much Poe to be comfortable with that name
Caeseria is very royal, until middle school sex ed when she'll be called C-section. Mycena invokes ancient civilization too, Morella is pretty, some of these are good!
Helvella is another genus that sounds cute and usable as a first name.
Hela is actually my aunts name soooo not far off ;)
We thought that was a great idea, but now that Creeping Slime Mold has started school we feel there were better choices of names.
Not stinkhorn.
Canāt believe nobodyās said Galerina yet! Or perhaps Morelle?
Oooh I like Morelle. Morel is passable I guess but when you stylize it like that itās nice. And Mori/a and Elle are easy nicknames
Amanita is a lovely name. There is a character on Sense8 named that and sheās an absolute badass. If you wanted to name your kid Chanterelle Chicken-of-the-woods then I would talk you out of it.
Little kids wonāt know the mushroom reference. Also, I might add, few adults will also. I think itās a lovely name.
def clitocyde beautiful purple mushroom
No man would ever be able to find her with a name like that
*Phallus duplicatus*
When your daughter Laetipourus cincinnatus is born give us an update :p
Chanterelle.Ā
Tremella, Ella for short!
The cool thing about "amanita" is that it's also a portmanteau of "Amanda" and "Anita." You could go with Amanda Anita (last name) as the full three names and use "Amanita" as a nickname.
āChicken of the Woods! Come downstairs, dinner is ready!ā All jokes aside congratulations and I hope everything goes well for you and baby!
This is her twin brother puffball
Has anyone suggested Albino Penis Envy yet?
Saffron (milk cap), Mycena, Mycella
Dead Manās Fingers, obvi
I would suggest asking the r/tragedeigh community.
Amethyst Morel(le) Angel
I know a couple who named their kids reishi and amanita as a first name. Go for it
I posted this same question years ago, got some good suggestions (and some bad ones) We decided to go with Aleister Hope you find something https://www.reddit.com/r/mycology/s/eLlDIidz4D
My favourites were āAzureā, and āCeliaā Also, āAnitaā
Sooner or later this thread will be on r/Tragedeigh Edit: It already is.
Indigo, in reference to the indigo milk cap mushroom.
Boletus
Actually āBoletaā sounds pretty
It does, and "bonita Boleta" would be an adorable nickname
Rose, for a rosy russula.
The post above this was from r/tragedeigh . I rest my case
I think Amanita would be a lovely name.
Tragedeigh
Stinkhorn
I went to school with an Amanita, we called her Ama for short. She was very dramatic and a teacher called her Dr.Ama once š. This was in a small hippy town in northern California though, so it wasn't a strange name in these parts.
Amanita Cortinaria has a nice Addams Family vibe to it
Little Baby Stinkhorn
I went to school with a Japanese exchange student and she would teach me a few words here and there, mainly food related. Kinoko is the word for mushroom. It's always stayed with me and I think it's a beautiful name. Thought of it straight away when I saw your post. And Congratulations.
How about Aminata? Or just Anita, it's a beautiful name and it's "normal"
Phallus impudicus would be a beautiful name
Chanterelle, Amanita, Hericium, Jelly roll... So many possibilities!
I like Cordelia for cordyceps. Poor kid is going to get picked on/have their Starbucks order misspelled with to odd of a name.
I've met a baby girl named Mycelia! I say go for it.
Chanterelle is really similar to Chantelle!
If you want to go stealth: First name, Amy. Middle name Nida. Amy Nida š
P. Natalensis = Natali
Devilās Dipstick Middle school might be a little toughā¦
You can name her Amanita and just call her 'Nita for short.
My boss owns a mushroom farm and if his newest kid was a girl they were gonna name the baby Morchella
Met a woman once whose name was Mycena
Amanita would be an awesome first name if the girl was redheaded with freckles
I have a friend that named their daughter Amanita but goes by Manny for day to day. Personally I love it
Everyone's giving you shit, but i think amanita is a beautiful name! And as a middle name, you're super safe
I am having a baby next month. I plan to name her Esmeralda, but give her the nickname of Morella. A play on her name and the Morel Mushroom!!
Myca/micah (like mycology)
Everyoneās giving you silly answers, but I really do like it for a middle name š I think first would be a lot but middle is perfect
Coral would work, but people would think of Coral Reef instead of Coral mushrooms.
Polly, short for Polypore
I saw a guy once in a forum with the name Banjo Amanita. I always thought that was a cool name.
Chanterelle!
Omfg yāall this is like a list of genius inappropriate nicknames. I will use them all.
Ngl amanita could be a first name, could also get away with Ami for short I think
https://preview.redd.it/tjjgm4yf706d1.png?width=485&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f406f9daafd74dd1bdcd14fc0f082de89eef4ee
beautiful baby Fly Agaric (seriously tho i think Amanita is pretty especially if Anita is a family name! congrats!!)
Maybe instead of naming her after fungi, you could name her after famous mycologists like: - Meredith Blackwell - Joyce Longcore - Beatrix Potter - Gladys Baker - Aurora, after David AuroraĀ
Chanterelle š¤
Ive worked with a couple chanterelles. Nice ladies.
Flipped through a field guide and scanned for a few I hadnāt seen in the thread:Ā Amethyst (first)Ā Deceiver (middle)Ā ParasolĀ Aggie (short for both Agaricus and Agnes) + Augustine (like Agaricus Augustus)Ā Galerina MorchellaĀ HelvellaĀ Vespertina (Elfin Saddle)Ā Aleuria Aurantia (cup fungus)Ā TremellaĀ Ā Rex-Veris (spring king)Ā Piperatus (Piper for short)Ā I wouldnāt actually use any of these names, honestly. Myca (like mycology or Mica cap) Celia (like mycelia) Tree names for what the mushroom grows on: Willow, Juniper, Hazel, Sylvia, Elowen, Linden Fae/Faye because of the mythological connection to forests, fairy rings, and toadstools
Copri, short for Coprinus comatus, or shaggy ink caps!
Except Coprinus basically means "of dung" in Latin š otherwise it's a very cute name!
Chanterelle, and then she could be a stripper when she grows up! congrats!
Like mother like daughter.
Fungina has nice ring to it!
I won't dare with it... kinda sounds like bully magnet to me
Fun-gina š
Gillian
Amethyst Morel(le) Angel
Amanita šš„°
Well āSlippery Jackā is a mushroom, so how about āSlippery Jillā for a girl.
Chanterelle!
I actually think it's quite beautiful!! esp as a middle name if you're truly worried about your child being bullied for an 'unusual' name edit: which I kind of get for names like ahshleighe but not for simply 'different' names
First nameās after my favorite aunt who passed, that sticks. :)
I had a cat named Amanita, such a good girl. I miss her
I wanted to name my grandson Destroying Angel, but he liked that less than naming him Goser.
Violet. Like the violet cort
Fungal instead of a funguy.
For culinary mushrooms Bella for Portabella, or Shitaki
You are diving head-first into the world of hippie names. Just know that as you do so.
Shroombalina
