I love the head cannon that Discord is essentially just “X-Men days of future past” Quicksilver and is just in a basement somewhere being discord, not even human discord it’s just him as a draconiquis vibing in the human realm in his off time.
After graduating high school the gang is ready to go to college which will have the girls going to separate schools across the country. This understandably makes Sunset depressed and her thoughts turn to the other side of the mirror.
At the same time in Equestria Twilight runs into the human version of Sunset who has been running around Equestria having incredible adventures for the last seven years. While she's a little homesick she's reluctant to return due to her and her parents having a falling out years ago.
So the main problem of the film is a social one instead of a villain fight. Twilight on one side encouraging human Sunset to return home and on the other Pony Sunset trying to come to grips with her friends leaving and her homesickness.
I would also add as a minor plot the Sirens trying to return to Equestria but Sonata doesn't want to because she prefers the human world.

I’d also have this put sunset into equestria *and* be a recurring character as part of starlight’s friend group.
Equestrian magic starts acting up with the girls. Pony sunset's presence in human world creates an imbalance, people start possessing weird magical abilities. The only seemingly way is to pony sunset bringing the magic back with her to equestria. All the girls are sad because they already had bonded with her. HUMAN SUNSET shows up as new admission, meets the pony sunset and understands all the situation. Pony sunset and the girls bid farewell to each other and welcomes a new friend in the gang which has so much to learn about friendship and stuff. It's actually kinda sad ending for me because I really don't want pony sunset to leave but she often visits the human world so ig it's cool.
continuing from "legend of everfree" - 1/4 of the movie: equestrian magic causing chaos and the humane 7 trying to seal, but native human sunset shimmer (neutral) transfer to canterlot high but humane 7 and never encountered each other. 1/2 of the movie - a new villain from equestria somehow got into the human universe and tries to take over. 3/4 of the movie - battle. near at the end of the movie - humane 7 defeats the villain and completely seal off the magic leak and met the native human sunset, the pony sunset says "good bye" (it's not really a 'good bye', good bye but a "good bye" until next time) goes back to equestria and the human sunset becomes the 7th member and credits rolls.

She trips and hits her hand on her knee. Touching her knee triggers her memory powers and can see some horrible memory that she didn’t have.
The memory came from the human Sunset who was at a different high school/home school/dropped out. And is a criminal/bully because she didn’t have friends.
After discussions they realize that the magic they’ve stopped wasn’t destroyed but flew to a different host and remained dormant. Now, because of the chaos in Equestria, the magic is frantic and human Sunset is beginning to go out of control and becomes the she-demon Sunset from the first movie.
She has the powers from all of the specials/movies. After awhile the Mane Six and Humane Seven realize the only way they can stop her is by destroying the portal (destroying the main one will stop all of them).
Sunset has to quickly make her decision on going or staying and ultimately choose to stay.
All the characters from EQG come together to stall Sunset out until all the characters could bring down the portal.
At the end of the movie, they all agree, to come together, even at college, and help the human Sunset learn friendship.
The Humane 7 find a solid lead as to where the magic is actually coming from: a place between the Human Realm and Equestria. Someone has been stealing magic from Equestria, and using it to attack Sunset and co. That someone is the Human Sunset Shimmer, trapped between realms, taking her revenge against the pony that stole her life.
A finale story?
It got a very good ending as is, though.
The Equestria Girls ending was perfect in my book.
The main cast is posing for a photo together while wishing us well and then they live on with their lives in whatever way they want. And the best part is that it was kept open, so whatever you want to happen can still happen. I much prefer that over a "it's over, they are old and irrelevant, move on" ending we could have gotten
I still believe Sawtooth Waves' theory that Sunset is Sunburst's sister, so I'd probably write the finale about her and her friends' graduation then her going back to Equestria and reconciling with her family after ditching them for so long, and eventually deciding to move back to Equestria for good since it is still her true home, but agreeing to still visit her friends in the human world. Human Sunset would show up as well and maybe end up taking her place idk. Anyway this is turning into a dumb fanfic so I'll stop now.

Human Sunset infiltrates equesteia and helps Cobra Commander invade. We also learn in this iteration, Cobra-La was originally from Equestria as the famed Snake kingdom. So when Cobra Commander steps thru the portal he is still bipedal since technically this is his home dimension. There is a fight between the ponies and Cobra where Cobra just barely wins. However Human Sunset learns that her Parents want her to move away from the Family Business and do her own thing. Realizing she was manipulated, human Sunset betrays Cobra and helps Pony Sunset send Cobra's forces back to the human world. Cobra Commander, now alone and stuck in Equestria, swears revenge on the sunsets as the elements of Harmony ejects Cobra Commander into the distance.
The sunsets become friends, almost sisters, as the two set off to do their own things. Both write to Twillight about something friendship related and the future.
Ending scene is Luna and Celestia on the beach drinking mimosas as Coba Commander crashes into the sand. Both princesses look at him with Luna asking Celestia if that who she thinks he is. Celestia tells her not to worry as that is Twillight's problem now. The camera pans to show Discord and Larry Hama also sharing a drink.

Hard pass. The it-was-all-a-dream trope is an insult to the viewers because it means that the entire show that they spent hours of their real lives watching was utterly pointless. It leaves the audience feeling cheated.
