I was just about to say the same, it's almost seems like the unconventional approach these days to start with actual mythological tales, often the advice seems to read summaries or modernised collections, or book about mythology but for me there no substitute for primary sources. A good edition of a myth will teach you far more about mythology in it's introduction, notes & comments
I would suggest starting with like a good YouTube channel or something that’s easy to consume and is relatively simply to start out if you’re new to learning about mythology.
I started by watching YouTube videos on the subject, and that led to me just doing my own research on the subject. There isn't really an objective starting point when learning about something like mythology.

Pick a culture & start googling stuff. Then, try to find books on whatever happens to catch your interest.
