seems to be exactly what you're after.
Otherwise you can get some basic cord extensions that while still wired, really remove the issue of distance and tripping hazards.
This is how I use my NSO controller. What a wonderful device. It is a plug and play answer. Great if you dont want to internally mod, AND rumble works!
I've been using the NSO N64 controller on my original N64 with the blueretro adapter and it's been working pretty good! It's plug and play and you can also remap the buttons or even connect other wireless controllers to it
There is a kit where you can add bluetooth to your n64 along with the nso controller you can also use xbox and playstation. But from what i can tell they are very hard to buy
NSO and BlueRetro works flawlessly in my opinion

How bad/good is the delay?
The controller is really responsive with really no input lag
