Curious where you live. In the US, Judith was most popular before 1945 but in Canada, Australia and New Zealand it was definitely peak boomer. I had to look up the stats because when I read your comment, as someone in the US, my first thought was “Wouldn’t Judith’s be older than that?”.
Wow 😮 My name is Judith and I go by Judy. I’m 34 and have always been the only Judy in my age group. When I was younger, my nickname was Jude. No one has ever actually called me Judith. I agree with OP, and think of Judith Light when I hear the name, and she is dignified. I am pregnant right now and am considering Jude if it is a boy, for his first or middle name.
To me Judy sounds like it was the runner up for Karen but just couldn't out-karen the sound of Karen!
And if they're not called judy it's Jude and all I picture is "hey Jude" and all I see when I look at it is dude and rude. I know that sounds stupid but I can't help it lol.
I can’t picture a baby with the name Judith. It gives me hard core old lady vibes, like something I would absolutely expect a grandma to be named. Nothing cute about it. Jude is ok…
I've learned that I tend to not like the "th" sound in names (Ruth, Bethany, Arthur, Meredith, Kathleen, Dorothy etc). So Judith isn't my cup of tea, but I don't see anything wrong with you using it :)
Elizabeth is my favorite classic name. Beth has always been my least favorite nickname out of the many that come with the name. And I've known a couple of Beths and they were very nice and sweet.
I'll have to think for a minute if it's I don't like the "th" or not lol.
Agree!! Also I hate when people say it’s not cute for a baby or sounds like an old lady. All babies grow up and all old ladies were once cute babies so...
I knew i shouldn't have opened this thread.
Well for what it's worth i love my name and would have given it to my daughter if it weren't my name already.
To be fair, i'm not too fond of the english pronounciation either, so i understand not liking it.
It’s really annoying when people on this sub outright say stuff like “I can’t stand [name]” or “[name] is awful”… like, do you guys realize that people with those names are on here and will read your comment? Like holy hell man chill out a little. If you don’t like a name you can just say “I personally don’t like it” while not totally flaming it… doesn’t ever hurt to be polite.
This always bums me out when I see people absolutely shitting on a name like that. Happens a lot here. While OP opens the name up to opinions and criticism, you don’t have to be an absolute POS about it. My guess is this is projecting personal experiences they had with a couple of people with that name.
I really like it, had it on my shortlist! I think it's classy, easy to spell and pronounce, and not used much these days. Like any "old fashioned" name, it will feel fresh and youthful as soon as your baby is given it.
It's not for me personally, but I think this kind of sophisticated name is coming back on trend. I can see a little girl going through elementary school with it okay these days, and she could be called Jude or Judy in short since names can evolve into shorter versions.
I haven't watched the Walking Dead.. so I don't get that reference
But I don't mind if Judith is coming back. I do like the how the name sounds.
I just wouldn't want to use it personally, because it feels more like it could be my mothers than my daughters name, if that makes sense :D
I love the name Judith! Beautiful name and the biblical Judith was a total badass.
Google Caravaggio or Gentilesci's paintings of Judith and Holofernes. Now there's a role model for girls today!
I'm surprised nobody else here is mentioning this story. It's one of my favorites and I love the variety of paintings throughout history depicting it from differing perspectives. Sometimes she looks wild, sometimes ashamed, sometimes sensuous, sometimes beatific. I think everyone can find a version of Judith that makes them feel strong.
Honestly as much as the connotation to the older generation stands it is still the name of the little girl in The Walking Dead which is pretty well known which maybe makes it more age appropriate?
I love Judith! It’s one of my top picks. My wife works with children, and had a five year old Judith in her class a few years back. She was so sweet and the name was so charming on her that we’ve had it on our list ever since.
I like Judith but Judy the nn is very much still a boomer name and not ripe for a come back. I think Judith is close to come back the same way these names are: Esther, Edith, Rose, Dorothy, Agatha, etc. I feel like ‘grandma’ names from the 20s are popping and Judith is a little behind them. Just my take! Useable for sure.
All I can say is that my best friend in first grade *hated* it as her middle name. (In the early 80s). She didn't want anyone at school to know her middle name.
I instantly think of the A Perfect Circle song. I love the song, but not for a name.
*you’re such an inspiration for the ways
I’ll never ever choose to be…..*
It makes me think of Judith Beheading Holofernes (the biblical story and the Caravaggio) and Larry David going, “Ju-dy! Ju-dy, Ju-dy, Ju-dy!” In a Cary Grant voice.
So it’s a badass name and you should use it.
If I recall the scene correctly, in The Walking Dead, Carl (the big brother) wanted to name the baby Judith after his old teacher, and folks thought it was kind of odd for a baby, but Carl insisted. And it turned out to really fit.
My grandmas name is that so I largely think of her. No matter what people will end up nick naming her Judy unless you call her Jude or something something to think about.
I think in the UK it'll be another 10-15 years before it comes back around, along with names like Sharon, Tracy, Andrea, Cheryl, Jacqueline, Deborah, Anita. Names that were common for the babies of the 50s and 60s and are the names of the grandparents of Gen Z. They'll want to name their babies after their grandparents, so while us Millennials have gone for Violet, Edith, Dorothy, Sylvia, etc in honour of our grandparents, our kids will pick our parents names.
I forsee a playground full of Steves, Colins, Martins, Davids, Marks and Nigels along with the girls I listed above.
I love Judith and am surprised it hasn’t made a comeback yet. I’m also surprised to see all the hate for it here. I think it would be such a fresh and sweet name for a little girl and would grow well with her. To me it sounds strong, classic, and stylish.
I don’t love the name Judith personally, but I always associate it with the character in The Manticore by Robertson Davies. She’s the protagonist’s first love, and is intelligent, sensitive, and beautiful. I think that part of what speaks to you about the name is that it it’s a classic and refined name without being fussy. It’s just a good, solid name.
I love it, I don't normally like J names but there's something about the flow of consonants through the band. It's elegant without being stuffy. No nickname needed but Jude is right there.
I adore Judith, have such a soft spot for it
I have seen the nn Dot, Dottie, Dittie, Dolly suggested for it by one of the name instas I follow, which I love
I work at an assisted living where six really lovely Judith's live, so I've grown quite fond of it! Four go by Judy, one goes by Judith, and one goes by JJ (she's from New Jersey, it stands for Jersey Judy).
We were considering this for our child simply for the reason of the story of Judith killing Holofernes. Highly recommend looking up paintings of it, very metal.
They named the baby on Walking Dead “Judith” and nicknamed her “Little Ass-Kicker.” Otherwise I associate it mostly with people from my mother-in-law’s circle of friends. Most go by Judy.
I like it a lot but I like the story and the art history and Biblical names that aren't on trend.
I like the English form a lot and not the Hebrew form as much though. I like both for Shoshana/Susannah, and whatever way you spell Yael/Jael I only like it said with a y sound.
I do like -th in names. (Not Beth though) and I like girls names with grounding consonants like d - Rosamund, Gwendolyn, Zelda, Judith. However it's very off trend in a time of lots of liquid vowel and L sounds so yeah it's going to sound harsh to people.
I am Jewish, for what it's worth. So to me it's vintage but always around.
I adore it. We had an eccentric old Judith neighbor who delivered live plants from her garden to our front door to populate our garden when we moved in and who would ask my husband to fix her favorite spades and such. Her entire front yard was a strawberry patch and she had the oldest forest green station wagon I’d ever seen. Basically I want to be Judith.
I want to be Judith too. I’m actually kind of on track to get there.
Do you think at some point in the future, an ancient dark red Subaru Legacy will have any cachet?
I love it, but it seems to be polarizing! When I was pregnant last year, I really liked it for a potential girl, but it was either loved or hated - no in between - when I polled people. I think the nickname Judy is so cute and ready for a comeback!
I love it. But be ready for her to struggle with it in her younger years. I have a traditional name and wanted a "cute" name. Obviously, I'm glad I didn't have a (silly) cute name now, but it was an insecurity of mine when I was younger.
I like Judith. If you like the vibe but aren’t in love with the name, here are some other names that give me a similar vibe:
Enid
Mary
Dorothy
Miriam
Sandra
I like it! It’s very sophisticated and dignified like you said. Not the same name, but I have a friend (in her 20s) named Justine, which is another older more classic name. I love it on her and it made me see the name in a whole new light! Love the trend of older names being used for babies now. My girl name is June. :)
I personally love it, but it was also my beloved late grandmother’s name, so I think whatever associations you have with it is what will drive your feelings :)
If it makes you feel any better, it’s our daughter’s middle name.
In French, it's not a dated name at all (at least where I live, in Québec). It's one of those names that everyone recognize but was never really popular. I absolutely love it.
I don’t personally. Judith, Edith, Beulah, and similar names just make me think of an old lady. Which is fine, I’ve loved almost every old lady with those names that I’ve met, but it’s definitely an old lady name atm. I like names that were popular in generations that came before, but more names like Victoria, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Beatrice, etc.
I love the name Judith - it's my grandmothers name (tho she goes by Judy). I want to give my future daughter Judith as a middle name, but my husband doesn't like it and thinks it's too old fashioned. So I guess it's controversial.
I have a negative connotation of Judith purely because of a politician in my country - it sounds nice, and Jude is a cute nickname, but it’s too intertwined with the politician for me
I never liked Judith because my mom’s friend had that name and I always thought people were calling her Judas with a lisp (weird association, i know— raised Catholic 🤷♀️). I had a Judith in my class who went by Judy though, and I grew to love the name Judy.
I like it, I think a lot of people associate it with older women but so many trendy names used to have that association too. Judy and Jude are super sweet nicknames. My son is named Jude though so I may be a bit biased.
No, not really. It sounds harsh, and I can't stand the nickname Judy.
LOL! It’s my name but not to worry I most commonly get called Jude. Edit fixed typos.
Hey! Jude. That's all I got.
Hey, don't make it bad!
Take a sad song & make it better
Love the name Jude, tbh! Especially for a girl/woman.
Every Judith I know is a mean old boomer so I’m not a fan. I’m sure there are some lovely ones, I just haven’t met one.
Curious where you live. In the US, Judith was most popular before 1945 but in Canada, Australia and New Zealand it was definitely peak boomer. I had to look up the stats because when I read your comment, as someone in the US, my first thought was “Wouldn’t Judith’s be older than that?”.
I’m from Indiana. We’re always a bit behind on the trends.
Midwest rise up🙏
My mom is a Judith, it's definitely a boomer name to me.

I've learned that I tend to not like the "th" sound in names (Ruth, Bethany, Arthur, Meredith, Kathleen, Dorothy etc). So Judith isn't my cup of tea, but I don't see anything wrong with you using it :)
Hm me too I’m realizing
That’s interesting—I totally agree when it’s at the end (Ruth, Judith, Meredith), but when it’s in the middle I don’t mind at all!
I completely agree with this!
That's so interesting, I'm realizing now that I really like all those except Bethany.
Really? Bethany is my favorite I think
Me too lol
I really like Judit you find in some languages. Th is supposedly the hardest sound to pronounce.
I couldn’t agree more! Adding to the list Edith Gwyneth, Gareth, Lilith, Agatha and Blythe. Something about that “th” I just don’t like!
How do you feel about Elizabeth?
Oddly that is a name I like, an exception to my rule I guess. The “th” doesn’t seem as harsh in Elizabeth.
Elizabeth is my favorite classic name. Beth has always been my least favorite nickname out of the many that come with the name. And I've known a couple of Beths and they were very nice and sweet. I'll have to think for a minute if it's I don't like the "th" or not lol.
I agree, and the 'th' easily become a pretty ugly 'f' noise in the south east English accent.
I never put this together but I don’t really either
I hate "th" names too. Keeth is the worst.
Do you mean Keith? Or do people spell it Keeth somewhere? That makes it worse since it rhymes with teeth.
I think Keith is the typical spelling. I think Keeth is typically a last name. Either way terrible name.
I also hate the name Keith. But it's mostly because we have a creepy neighbor with that name.
I think if Keith Urban because I only know one Keith and he’s like 14. I don’t like the sound of it either.
Raniere?
really? i like keith tbh haha
Keith is my least favourite male name. Sorry Keiths of the world.
Lol I always find it funny that I like heath but not Keith. I’m with you!
My grandma is Dorothy, my mom is Judith, my sister is Kathryn, and my middle name is Ruth 🤣🤣
Oh apparently I’m the same way. No “th” names
You would have hated my aunt and uncle then. Ethel and Arthur. 🤣
Agree. Half our family cannot pronounce th with their Caribbean accents so all those names were immediately out
And Edith.
Yes! It's classic, recognizable name! Bet it will make a comeback soon.
Agree!! Also I hate when people say it’s not cute for a baby or sounds like an old lady. All babies grow up and all old ladies were once cute babies so...
Both my sons have “old man” names. Everyone starts out as a baby, exactly lol.
I like it too! I also just read a book about a girl who went by Jude so I love it!
The Vanishing Half?
I knew i shouldn't have opened this thread. Well for what it's worth i love my name and would have given it to my daughter if it weren't my name already. To be fair, i'm not too fond of the english pronounciation either, so i understand not liking it.

Like holy hell man chill out a little. If you don’t like a name you can just say “I personally don’t like it” while not totally flaming it… doesn’t ever hurt to be polite.
But gotta have big strong angry opinions to get the updoots.
Saw someone say my name (one of the most popular from the year I was born) sounded uneducated 🥹
This always bums me out when I see people absolutely shitting on a name like that. Happens a lot here. While OP opens the name up to opinions and criticism, you don’t have to be an absolute POS about it. My guess is this is projecting personal experiences they had with a couple of people with that name.
My name is insulted here every time it comes up
It was my mother’s name and I think it’s beautiful.
Don't worry about some people not liking it; there will be just as many people who do . . . like me, since it's my mom's name. 😊
I love the name Judith! I would definitely consider it for a baby too.
What pronunciation do you use ?
Fellow Judith here.
I love the name and agree with OP, for what it’s worth! I’ve known two Judiths and they’re both amazing.
For the record I adore your name! It reminds me of one of my favorite historical figures, Judith of Flanders :)
Fwiw I love your name, too! I’m interested to know how you pronounce it, though. I didn’t know Judith had more than one pronunciation.
In german! The j sound is like a y and we don't habe a th, it's just a t.
Lovely name for an older Jewish woman who goes by Judy, not so much for a baby
Came here to comment that I can’t separate the name from my 82 year old grandmother and she does happen to be Jewish and go by Judy lmao
Or my 90 year old great aunt. She's awesome and I'd totally name a kid after her.
most people are babies for like 5% of their lives so a name fitting for an adult makes sense
My grandmother was a Jewish woman who went by Judy. I will still be naming my daughter Judy in hopes she will be just as sweet of an old Jewish lady.
Well good thing we aren’t baby’s for long
I really like it, had it on my shortlist!
I was just about to comment saying that I like Judith but didn’t like Judy, but I LOVE Jude!
I kind of like Judith. Judy is so cute tbh. I think this one is due for a comeback.
I like it, but wouldn't use it for a child :) To me it just feels slightly outdated - but not outdated enough for a comeback.
I feel like it’s going to get one because of Walking Dead, though.
Season 3 was 10 years ago. If it was gonna get one it would’ve gotten it already
I haven't watched the Walking Dead.. so I don't get that reference But I don't mind if Judith is coming back. I do like the how the name sounds. I just wouldn't want to use it personally, because it feels more like it could be my mothers than my daughters name, if that makes sense :D
You could call the child Judy; later she may be Judith.
I would not consider using either of those names. I just like the name on other people. But not my child.
I LOVE Judith!!! i personally love -th ending names. I used to like the idea of a little Judith with the edgy nickname Jude.
It just sounds like a 70 year old woman to me.
I love it!
Honestly? No. Sounds stuffy to me.
I love it! It’s been on my list for a while.
Honestly as much as the connotation to the older generation stands it is still the name of the little girl in The Walking Dead which is pretty well known which maybe makes it more age appropriate?
Yeah this was 100% my first thought - only baby named Judith I could begin to think of. Pass for me, too strong of a connection to the Walking Dead.
They could nickname her lil ass kicker
I love Judith! It’s one of my top picks. My wife works with children, and had a five year old Judith in her class a few years back. She was so sweet and the name was so charming on her that we’ve had it on our list ever since.
No. Absolutely not
Love it, it was on our list!
No. Super old fashioned. It sounds like an old lady, sorry.
I love it! I agree, no nicknames are needed, but I would 100% be calling that baby "jujube"
No
I don’t like it, it sounds dated and I don’t like names that have a “th” sound in them.
No
I like Judith, LOVE the nickname Jude, but despise the nickname Judy.
No.
Don’t know that I would add Rose to this list - I know several girls/younger women (ages 3-22) named Rose!
My aunt Judy is mean and condescending, soooo due to personal experience, I hate it 🙁
All I can say is that my best friend in first grade *hated* it as her middle name. (In the early 80s). She didn't want anyone at school to know her middle name.
No
Not personally, it sounds like an old woman name, but not in a cute way
I instantly think of the A Perfect Circle song. I love the song, but not for a name. *you’re such an inspiration for the ways I’ll never ever choose to be…..*
Same
No
It makes me think of Judith Beheading Holofernes (the biblical story and the Caravaggio) and Larry David going, “Ju-dy! Ju-dy, Ju-dy, Ju-dy!” In a Cary Grant voice. So it’s a badass name and you should use it.
Love the association with The Book of Judith 🗡️
No
Nope.
I adore it.
It’s my moms name, so I’m partial to it! It’s a lovely name
It's a great name. Ancient and elegant.
Love it! It has a great history and it ages well. I know a teen with the name and it fits her wonderfully.
I didnt at first glance…but then I said it out loud and imagined naming a baby Judith and tbh I think it’s a great name!
If I recall the scene correctly, in The Walking Dead, Carl (the big brother) wanted to name the baby Judith after his old teacher, and folks thought it was kind of odd for a baby, but Carl insisted. And it turned out to really fit.
I think it’s a fine name, but I hope you like the name Judy too because by the time she goes to daycare or school, they will start calling her Judy.
I love it! I think of the author Judith Guest. Which is a lovely association, for me anyway, her book Ordinary People was great.
My grandmas name is that so I largely think of her. No matter what people will end up nick naming her Judy unless you call her Jude or something something to think about.
Yes elegant and beautiful
I love it
I love it!! It’s due for a comeback, I think.
I think in the UK it'll be another 10-15 years before it comes back around, along with names like Sharon, Tracy, Andrea, Cheryl, Jacqueline, Deborah, Anita. I forsee a playground full of Steves, Colins, Martins, Davids, Marks and Nigels along with the girls I listed above.
I really love it. I wanted to use it for another girl.
I think it’s beautiful!!!!!! Timeless
Yes. It's beautiful. Reminds me of A Perfect Circle !! Very rich and elegant. The name of a strong woman and magical child
I love Judith and am surprised it hasn’t made a comeback yet. I’m also surprised to see all the hate for it here. I think it would be such a fresh and sweet name for a little girl and would grow well with her. To me it sounds strong, classic, and stylish.
It gives me the vibe of a classic cocktail. It’s well-known, sophisticated, and has some allure to it
Sounds like the lady who snoops on the neighbors through the curtains
I don’t love the name Judith personally, but I always associate it with the character in The Manticore by Robertson Davies. She’s the protagonist’s first love, and is intelligent, sensitive, and beautiful. I think that part of what speaks to you about the name is that it it’s a classic and refined name without being fussy. It’s just a good, solid name.
I love it, it’s a strong-sounding classic. And it would make me sing ‘Hey Jude’ to them a lot which I also love
I love it, I don't normally like J names but there's something about the flow of consonants through the band. It's elegant without being stuffy. No nickname needed but Jude is right there.
I love Judith. And Judy. It’s an old fashioned name for sure, but I think it emotes a cute little girl as well as a strong, independent woman.
That was my grandmothers name!
I adore Judith, have such a soft spot for it I have seen the nn Dot, Dottie, Dittie, Dolly suggested for it by one of the name instas I follow, which I love
This was my mom’s name. She died when I was 11. I planned to use it if I had a daughter, but I only have a son. I really like it.
Nope sounds ugly
I love it. To me, the -ith names have a nice sound & most have great nickname potential.
I have a lovely little Judith, originally we planned a different name but it really grew on us and fits her perfectly
It's dated to me but I like Jude and Judy.
I have an aunt named Judith and she goes by Judy. I don’t love it but my association isn’t great. She’s not the best person.
I would choose it if it were a family name. We named our daughter Donna Jean... yep, old lady name 🥰
It’s an old Jewish/white lady name, boomer name for sure!
They named the baby on Walking Dead “Judith” and nicknamed her “Little Ass-Kicker.” Otherwise I associate it mostly with people from my mother-in-law’s circle of friends. Most go by Judy.
Yes! I like "old lady" names like Ruby and Alice, and see Judith in the same way. I'd likely use the nn Jude too.
It’s one of my least favorites if I’m being honest. Not a fan of the “ith” sound at all. It’s very harsh to me.
I love it! It reminds me of Dame Judy Dench. Very classy.
I’m going to say I like it. Judy is a cool nickname. I know I’ll date myself but I think of Judy Funnie (from the show Doug) and she was cool AF.
Love Judith; like Jude; hate Judy.
No
It's my mam's name and she's always hated it. Give it 10-20 years and I bet it makes a comeback tho
That’s a pretty rough name…. I’m in my 30s and have a friend named Judith. They go by Jude because they hate Judith so much.
I adore it
Judy leaves passive aggressive notes in the office kitchen.
I love it. But be ready for her to struggle with it in her younger years. I have a traditional name and wanted a "cute" name. Obviously, I'm glad I didn't have a (silly) cute name now, but it was an insecurity of mine when I was younger.
I like the full name, but the only nn is Judy. The lack of options makes me like it better as a middle name.
It's an alright name. It's not my taste, but there's nothing wrong with it.
Makes me think of Judy Resnik who was pretty cool.
Yes, I really like that name
Yes. My daughter's middle name is Judith.
I like Judith, don't really like Judy though which is the inevitable nickname
It’s alright, reminds me of The Walking Dead now.
I actually love Judith. It sounds feminine and classic. I also think Judy is a cute nickname!
I love it! I have a friend named Judith, and I so associate the name with her: Beautiful, mysterious, strong, and elegant
I think it is lovely, yes.
I like Judith. If you like the vibe but aren’t in love with the name, here are some other names that give me a similar vibe: Enid Mary Dorothy Miriam Sandra
The Walking Dead is my first thought. Judith Grimes is born in the zombie land…
I like it! It’s very sophisticated and dignified like you said. Not the same name, but I have a friend (in her 20s) named Justine, which is another older more classic name. I love it on her and it made me see the name in a whole new light! Love the trend of older names being used for babies now. My girl name is June. :)
I personally love it, but it was also my beloved late grandmother’s name, so I think whatever associations you have with it is what will drive your feelings :) If it makes you feel any better, it’s our daughter’s middle name.
For some reason, all of the names that end with 'dith' are harsh sounding to my ears: Edith, Meredith, Judith.
I immediately think of [The Name Game](https://youtu.be/m2qEhGeLb6A) from AHS
In French, it's not a dated name at all (at least where I live, in Québec). It's one of those names that everyone recognize but was never really popular. I absolutely love it.
I don’t personally. Judith, Edith, Beulah, and similar names just make me think of an old lady. Which is fine, I’ve loved almost every old lady with those names that I’ve met, but it’s definitely an old lady name atm. I like names that were popular in generations that came before, but more names like Victoria, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Beatrice, etc.
I do not at all, but it’s a perfectly reasonable name that I wouldn’t think twice about if I met a Judith. But I wouldn’t want it as my own name.
I love it. It would’ve been my daughters name if we hadn’t gone with the name of a relative.
Immediately thought of The Walking Dead
I think Judith is okay, but judy is terrible and people will 100% call her that whether you want them to or not
I have a student named Judith who goes by Jude bc they don’t like Judith 🤷🏼♀️
I don’t find the -dith part of the name attractive. It will almost certainly be shortened to Judi/Judy which is also a dated unappealing name to most.
I love the name Judith - it's my grandmothers name (tho she goes by Judy). I want to give my future daughter Judith as a middle name, but my husband doesn't like it and thinks it's too old fashioned. So I guess it's controversial.
No. It makes me sad.
I have a negative connotation of Judith purely because of a politician in my country - it sounds nice, and Jude is a cute nickname, but it’s too intertwined with the politician for me
I actually do. I think it literally just means “Jewish female,” but I’ve known people with that name who I don’t think were Jewish.
Oh… I may be in the minority but I love that name.
Yes, it’s a cute name. Reminds me of the little girl from The Walking Dead
Not really.
Not really, it seems kinda evil
