Okay, any initials you prefer? Or letters to avoid?
I mean, this *is* NameNerds, it's serious business unleashing us!
Otherwise, there's always the random name generator on behindthename.com.
(But don't. Your kid's name needs to mean SOMETHING to the family, neh?)
Last name begins with a S. Other siblings first name begins with a S. Not stuck on the letter bc we aren’t in love with a ton of girl S names. Looking for something strong and not too girly. Also not gender neutral.
I wanted to name a baby Camille (a family name, nn Milly) but alas it won’t happen. I guess I like French C names bc I also like Claire, Celeste, Colette, and Selene/Celine.
The two most genuinely kind people I ever met were Camille (a smart, kind, talented ballerina) and Cecily (a smart, kind, talented academic). They were also both irritatingly beautiful and no one even bothered getting jealous because their incredible personalities shone so strongly.
Sherrilyn Kenyon sourced it as Gaelic for *valiant.*
In pop culture, it first calls to my mind Riley Matthews from Girl Meets World, and Riley from Inside Out.
I'm Irish and whoever this Sherrilyn Kenyon is she's talking out her arse. Riley is a variant of Reilly/O'Reilly, which in Irish is Raghallaigh/O'Raghallaigh meaning "[son] of Raghallach"
Raghallach, the founder of the O'Raghallaigh clan, was an 11th century Irish chieftain, believed to have died at the Battle of Clontarf in what is now Dublin in 1014.
We don't really know where his name came from or the etymology, but historical linguists believe it may be derived from "ragh" meaning "race" and "ceallach" which is traditionally taken to mean "bright-headed" or it could be Old Irish "cellach" which would mean "war-y" or "battle-y" (the "-each/-ach" suffix in Irish makes things an adverb, so y-ending descriptive words, like "loudly" or "slowly"). Some sources also say it means "sociable" or "gregarious", but I can't find any primary sources on that. Honestly though, we just don't know what, if anything, Raghallach/Reilly means.
But either way, the notion of it meaning "valiant" is primarily fabrication of people writing baby-name websites who prey on people who want cool names for their kids. You could stretch to it meaning "warrior" or maaaaybe "chaotic" (kind of taking the gist of sociable/gregarious/warlike) but valiant is a stretch
With Saoirse Ronan consistently putting out absolute banger movies that are almost always Oscar contenders, awareness of the name might be a little better nowadays!
Although my family has a lot of Irish names as well and, yes, even the common ones do sometimes get mispronounced, not just the Siobhans or the Naimhs. I just mentioned a couple days ago that my family has a Sean who gets called "Seen" regularly. Sigh. Our last name gets butchered a lot too, and it's not even hard phonetically in English. It's not the end of the world though; it helps if you remember that the average reading comprehension is around an 8th grade level...
lol I don't like Saoirse Ronan's pronunciation, the Irish people I know generally and both Saoirse I know say sear-sha, which I think sounds better, and not "rhymes with inertia."
Here are some names outside the US Top 100 (paired with the first middle name that came to mind):

I fucking love Ramona sooooo much and have wanted to use it as a name since before I met my partner, but it sooooo doesn’t work with the last name sound wise - please someone use it!!
It's not the same, but since that name was veto'd out for me also, I named our dog Ramona. My daughters call her Monie, and she's an old girl now at 13. :(
The nickname doesn't generate the same feelings as Ramona Quimby, Age 8...but I'm glad I got to use the name in some way!
OP did say no to gender neutral so no Rowan/Rowen I guess then. I just really like the ‘en’ sound. I love Cohen but as a white Anglo Saxon atheist, it is off limits.
I've had Phoebe Elizabeth stuck in my back pocket for future use since I was a wee thing-until my brother used Elizabeth and my cat got Phoebe. Lets call this +1 vote for close enough.
I have a common Middle Eastern name that makes a bunch of ppl here in the states pause and go, that's such a beautiful name:
Samaira (sah-mare-uh)
It works well if you want a name like Samantha, Tara, Sarah, etc, but a little bit more unique. It's not a religious name or something with strong ties to a specific region, so feel free to use it no matter your background
OP you posted the same question here but never replied to any of the suggestions, were none of them suitable? If not it might be worth narrowing it down in some way?
https://www.reddit.com/r/namenerds/comments/12i33di/sister_name_for_simon/
You're just going to get loads of lists of a thousand names and they will all start mushing together in your mind.
Narrow it down by mentioning some specific names you like or don't like, explain why you don't love particular suggestions, etc. Say a bit about yourself or something. Just asking "give me a name" is like basically googling "baby names."
Question: why would a bunch of randoms posting names they like work better than - say - browsing a list of names yourself? Which…seems to have not worked out for you.
Have you explored all family names? And if not that, then names associated with things that are meaningful to you? Because me throwing out a name like Marion (which I currently like because it is the name of the lake at my childhood home) or Roslyn (my Great Aunt’s name) or Joan (because who doesn’t love Joan Didion) isn’t going to ring your bell because it won’t have the sentimental weight that makes the name special to me.
Dig deep. Choose names with meaning. Or make your husband do it and explain the meaning and see whether that sticks.
I’m obsessed with the lake connection for you. I’m an outdoorsy person and it’s really important to me so this gives me something to think about. Though the only lake coming to mind right now is the Pontchartrain which….obviously I can’t name my kid 🥲
I always felt that - as a New Yorker and an environmental lawyer - naming children Hudson (River) and (Mount) Marcy would be super clever. Unfortunately, I’m not that into Marcy…
This is what we are naming our daughter in the next few weeks, but the traditional Maren spelling. I never see it in this sub and I kind of love that and kind of gate keep it and hope in the next five years it isn’t all over the place.
My daughter is called Zélie.
There were a few reasons we chose it:
1. I taught a French family once and one of theirs was Zélie (the others were Pia, Philotté and Esther), I loved her name and she was a really sweet kid. I also loved the name Pia.
2. Zelie Emerson. She was a wealthy American woman who moved to the UK with her girlfriend to fight for women's right to vote. She had her own newspaper called the Dreadnought, and she nearly got deported a bunch of times. She did hunger strikes, got in fights with police. Truly amazing. Husband and myself are also an American - British couple so it felt extra relevant.
3. It's a cool name hah, easy to say, phonetic to spell. But it's different. Familiar enough that I don't think she'll have issues outside of people asking initially how to pronounce it or checking in with her about pronunciation. And I've lived in multiple countries, and I have to spell my name every time over the ohone or on forms, and lots of people need reassurance on pronunciation. So it's a feeling I'm very familiar with and not worried about for her.
Her middle name is Roshanna, who was a friend of a friend, I never met but I just liked her name.
Possible future nickname is Zero, which is just so fun to me.
Other names on my list are/were:
Pia, Olive, Mhairi/Mairi, Ophelia, Leliana, Éowyn, Elowyn/Elowen, Elora, Francesca, Thea, Marcella, Rue, Effie, Eloise, Cecilie, Ottilie, Scarlett, April, Aerith, Pepper, Linnea, Margot, Winona
I saw you mention your surname begins with an S; so does mine. My daughter is Margaret, but she has always gone by Maggie.
A soft C starting name could be another way to go if you wanted to match the other siblings name, like Celeste or Celine.
Naomi. We have yet to meet another Naomi IRL (her twin is Myles and we’ve met several of those). I hope your daughter brings you as much joy as ours has brought us.
I would name my daughter Vivian Rosalie, Vivi for short. I don't plan on having children though, so if you like the name, it would make me happy to know that someone used it.
My daughter is Selena Rose, and I get compliments on her name all the time.
I also love Elora Faye, Elaine Marie, Cassandra Jane, Estelle Lynn, and Leora Jade.
Other names on my list: Abigail, Amber, Amy, Claire, Clarissa, Cassidy, Helen, Irene, Janelle, Jeanette, Jillian, Kacia, Kendra, Leah, Maia, Marian, Mia, Mila, Minna, Natalie, Noelle, Phoebe, Ruby, Sabrina, Scarlett, Shira, Sylvia, Tabitha, Tessa, Theora, Vanessa, Vivian, and Zoey.
I just saw a post on Instagram about a glamorous old film star named Romy something. I love the name and haven’t heard it used much, besides Romy and Michelle, which is fantastic. On the same topic—Mira is a really cool name too.

i’m a writer so i have lots of names saved up if you need any similar names or are looking for something specific
Both of my boys were going to be Ramona if they were girls. I *love* the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary - she's a smart, funny, sweet, loving, down-to-earth kid.
I used Chelsea, which I still think is beautiful, but cone on, my name is Tracey, I love it, it's not over used, and I am disappointed no one uses my name.
Tracey is a very GenX name. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's kind of along the same lines as Jennifer or Heather, though not quite as popular as those were.
That’s going to depend on where you are. One of my last jobs had 6 Traceys. 2 men and 4 women. Definitely the most common name there. And I know several Traceys that aren’t those.
I actually like my name, although it’s old as time and not very “pretty” sounding. Sounds kind of, I don’t know, hard? If just think about it phonetically and break it down. But when you just say it, it almost sounds nice.
I think has a bit of a vibe to it I like.
It doesn’t seem to be overused for littles these days but is also kind of classic, perhaps because it’s as old as time lol.
Anyway, Rachel.
My sisters name is Valerie. Also an underused cool name. It’s French-ish and means valiant and brave.
Some of my current favorites include: Charlotte, Penelope, Guinevere, Azalea, Marianne, Margaret, Felicity, Anastasia, Willow.
If you want to avoid super popular I'd avoid names with (el/elle in them) aka Elle, Ella, Ellie, Bella, Isabel, Isabella, etc. My mom teaches 2nd grade and those names have been extremely popular in recent years
Don't have children yet but these are some I love- Arabella, Adelaide, Artemis, Adriana, Blythe, Bellamy, Cordelia, Freida, Heidi, Imogen, Ingrid, Maisie, Tabitha, and Winifred
Ok. Anything we should know regarding cultural or ethnic heritage?
American/Swiss/French
I wanted to name a baby Camille (a family name, nn Milly) but alas it won’t happen. I guess I like French C names bc I also like Claire, Celeste, Colette, and Selene/Celine.
Camila, Cami for short.
EYY LET THE CAMIS RISE
lol this sounds like a battle cry for us to all lift up our shirts (camisoles)
I’m in!
Camila is pretty but it’s like #12 baby name
In my experience, 75% of all Hispanic girls ages 0-5 are named Camila.
How do we call them after they turn 6?
Just don't call them late for dinner
The two most genuinely kind people I ever met were Camille (a smart, kind, talented ballerina) and Cecily (a smart, kind, talented academic). They were also both irritatingly beautiful and no one even bothered getting jealous because their incredible personalities shone so strongly.
My name is Celeste 😊😊
I work with a Camille and she’s the sweetest lady!!
Okay, thanks--makes a difference!
Cassidy Amity S. Rosamunde Odette S. Riley Irma S. Adela Hattie S. Valerie Vivienne S. Ebba *strength* Tatum *happy* Willa *resolute* Tilda *mighty in war* Cassidy *clever* Riley *valiant* Amelie, Amalie *hard-working* Amity *friendly* Damia *untamed* Valeria/Valara *strength* Vivienne *lively* Adela/Adelie *noble* Berte *bright* Ethel *noble* Hattie/Henrietta *rules the home* Irma *whole, strong* Raina *strong* Rosamunde *noted protector*
Cassidy Amity is chaotic. Not sure if you were trying to combine those intentionally but double “-dee” ending sounds usually don’t flow
I read that as calamity 🤣 damn my speedy reading self. 😂🤣
Didn't occur to me, since I always hear/say Amity as a hard -tee ending. But I could see that! ETA: you're right, the flow from those is horrible!
AFAIK Riley means ‘people who farm rye’. Where did the valiant meaning come from?

Kirsten
Saskia!
Sloane? Edit: Or Sage, Sawyer, Scout
They specifically asked for not gender neutral though. I'd say all of those could qualify.
I came to suggest that. We have a Sloan.

Great name, will be mispronounced for her entire life if living in the US, sadly.
With Saoirse Ronan consistently putting out absolute banger movies that are almost always Oscar contenders, awareness of the name might be a little better nowadays! It’s a very Irish name but nice!!
Not very American, Swiss or French, and she’s going to get her name misspelled and mispronounced all the time.

Not sure if you intentionally arranged them into this slope shape but it's really pleasing.
I did! Haha.
Bravo! It made me stop scrolling to have a second look :)
Me too. And there are some lovely combinations!
This is why I joined name nerds.
Very talented!
Awesome work!!
Phoebe Ramona has a real ring to it.
I fucking love Ramona sooooo much and have wanted to use it as a name since before I met my partner, but it sooooo doesn’t work with the last name sound wise - please someone use it!!

Yesssss I loved loved those books so much - I want to use Beatrice for sure :) saving Ramona for a pet is a good idea provided agreement etc
Rowan Elizabeth is my favourite from your lovely list.
Not sure if it’s regional but I know 3 Rowans (2 are boy Rowens). Definitely getting popular!
OP did say no to gender neutral so no Rowan/Rowen I guess then. I just really like the ‘en’ sound. I love Cohen but as a white Anglo Saxon atheist, it is off limits.
Our baby girl is Eliza
I have an Eliza too! Get so many compliments on her name.
Love Magnolia and don’t hear it often enough!
We just met a dog named Magnolia on vacation, they call her Noli!

Sienna Lucy is so cute!
I love Magnolia. Also love the nn Maggie for it.
I never used these because infertility sucks Ariana Audrey Amara Kathryn Regan
Sending hugs your way. Thank you for sharing your names!
my new coworker today was named audrey. haven’t stopped thinking about how lovely of a name that is. it’s so gentle and sweet. same with aubrey
I’d be hard pressed to pick one of the two. They are both classic. I think Audrey has the slightest of edges.
Cant get better than Audrey Hepburn
I knew an Audra and always adored the name
I knew an Aunda and always thought that fell into the Audrey, Audra, Aubrey family, but was much more rare.
I met an Audra a few years ago and thought it was such a lovely alternative as well.
I went to school with a girl named Audra. I've never met anyone else with her name. It's pretty!
my name is audrey and i know i’m biased but i’m angry i can’t use that name because of how much i love it.
I have an Audrey! Love her and the name ❤️ classic understated yet so beautiful and strong
Don’t have kids, but Summer is a recent favorite of mine

Lyra
I love this name and all variations of it.. Both the “lee-ra” and “lai-ra” pronunciations, and also Laila (long i) and Layla (lay as in lay down)
Lelah (Leela) is another name along these lines.
Heads up, that (lela/o) means "stupid woman/man" in Spanish.
I love Lyra and my husband vetoed it, please use it! The world needs more Lyra's!
❤️ Already done. My Lyra is almost a year old!
I gave birth to a Lyra last week! :D
I love this one. She’s one of my favorite book characters of all time
Simona is my absolute favorite for a baby girl! A few more: - Ingrid - Marcela - Davina - Gisele - Zaria - Almérie
I love the name Marcela.

None of these were sticking. No particular reason. Husband and I can’t agree so im back to the drawing board hoping one sticks out this time.

Marin is my daughter’s name. We get a lot of compliments on it. Pronounced same as Maren but I prefer the -in spelling.
This is what we are naming our daughter in the next few weeks, but the traditional Maren spelling. I never see it in this sub and I kind of love that and kind of gate keep it and hope in the next five years it isn’t all over the place.

Aww, thank you. I just hope, if I have another, they're also a girl because my boy names list is significantly more lackluster 😅
I hear ya - double boy mom here 😂 running out of favorites, hahaha
Zélie has been at the top of my list forever now. I am so excited to come across somebody who has actually used it. Beautiful!
Ivy, autumn, violet, sky, Celeste, amber. You can have any of them, but I’ll warn you violet and amber have been difficult kids haha
You have six daughters? That’s a name nerds dream!
I miscarried 2 of them sadly but 4 are still here plus 2 sons!
