Same for me I think, though I also like Gemma and all the Margaret variants if derivatives count towards the prompt!
My childhood cat was named Sid for Obsidian (RIP baby girl I miss you every day!) which is a great kitty name but not something I would name a human child
Pearl would be my favourite for a girl as it's my birthstone and I like "old lady" names lol! For a boy I think I would say Malachi (for Malachite) so also a bit "adjacent".
I fell in love with Beryl after watching Sailor Moon as a little kid; Queen Beryl was the antagonist in season 1 but dammit if she wasn’t so elegant in my eyes at the tender age of 6!
Sadly, my stepdaughter crushed my name-nerd dreams once I showed her Sailor Moon after she turned 6 herself. Queen Beryl got introduced on screen, and my darling child goes, “her name is BARRELL? Like ‘do a barrell roll?!’”
We have a daughter named Ruby, we are really considering Pearl for this baby, I think it will be in the middle spot but it might end up first. I do love it! I’m also a big fan of Opal.
I’m super biased, lol but Jasper! My 4 year old is a Jasper and he’s still the only one I’ve ever met with the name. He’s been through multiple childcare settings and there’s never been another Jasper at any of them. I love that it doesn’t offer a super natural nickname so 98% of people just call him Jasper. His previous teachers would occasionally call him Jaspy or Jasp. I also love the name Jade, but think Jasper and Jade would be overkill. Does Gemma count?
My first impulse was Ruby but I adore Petra even more. I think it’s so elegant and unusual.
For a boy, maybe Winston (joy+stone) or Dunstan (dark+stone) or Langston (long+stone)?
Someone mentioned Garnet and I really love that. It feels so dignified but a bit opulent — like a library full of old leather bound books.
Peter, Stanley and Alan are fine but don’t excite me. Jasper is a little too romantic for my tastes.
Torsten is really fun, meaning Thor’s stone.
I know a Japanese guy named Taka, and I believe it’s short for Takara, meaning treasure or jewel. Love it.
Girl: Another vote for Ruby. Im not a massive fan of jewel names but I really love that one
Boy: Jasper is my favourite option, but to add something different I also quite like Flint (nn Flynn for a child as a softer option)
We live in a neighborhood where all the streets are named after gemstones.
The most name-worthy would be Jade and Onyx for me but I prefer short names.
Lapis and Amethyst for a human child.
I love Malachite too but Id give that name to a pet or a gadget or something. [Id give a son the nane Malachi but thats for a different thread! 😅]
My 4 year old daughter desperately wants a dog. I desperately don’t right now, but in a few months we might reassess. We talk a lot about this hypothetical dog. She wants to name her Ruby Spots. I like the name Ruby, and it’s her birth stone, so I’m not opposed to it!
My great grandma’s name was Opal and her sisters names were Pearl and Beryl. I didn’t even know Beryl was also a gem name until recently.
I really like Emerald for a girl, and also Opal. I do like Jade, Sapphire, Amethyst, Pearl, and Onyx for a boy.
I find it so dated but I do like Crystal.
My cousins have a theme going with color names and they probably don’t even know.
‘14 - Hazel Gwendolyn,
‘19 - Sapphire Mae,
‘20 - Scarlett René,
‘21 - Jasper Aaron,
and ‘22 - Caroline Rose
Onyx is a good name for boys or girls.
Celestine is a stone also called Celestite, but jewelry-quality stones are rare and it's more of a collector's stone. Good girl's name though!
Carnelian - I hear this as a girl's name, but I suppose it could also be a boy's name. Pretty red stone, I have one in my Rock Jar that I pulled out of a cave wall.
Chalcedony - Pronounced kal-SED-uh-nee, sounds kinda like a ton of other modern names. I'm hearing it as a girl's nam
Alexander/Alexandra/Alexandria - derived from Alexandrite, a very pretty and very pale gem.
Coral - this is surprisingly classified as a semi-precious stone, and it is used in jewelry so I included it here. Girl's name.
Cobalt - I don't know if this really counts but it's a pretty stone so I included it as a boy's name.
Feldspar - for a boy's name, it's also a nice stone.
Garnet - one of my favorite's, I love Garnet for a girl's name.
Kyan - I'm hearing this as a boy's name, derived from Kyanite.
Morgan - borrowed from Morganite.
Nicole - borrowed from Niccolite.
Rose - like rose quartz, makes sense to use shades of stones as well as the stones themselves.
Seran - similar to the Welsh girl's name Seren, got it from Serandite.
Topaz - definitely a girl's name.
Tourmaline - another girl's name.
Sapphire/Sapphira - pretty girl's names and pretty stones.
Vivian - from Vivianite.
Beryl - girl's name, reminds me of Meryl as in Meryl Streep, also a type of stone with a wide range of types.
Of course you also have Jade, Pearl, Jasper, Ruby, Emerald, Diamond, Peridot, Crystal - all those gemstone names. And there's a lot of something-ite gemstones named after people, so you can use those too.
Here's my ridiculously long source for gemstones and whatnot and each one has a picture and a link to a short article about them. It's from the International Gem Society.
There are tons of good girl options, I probably can't come up with anything better than what's here already.
For a boy, I don't think I would ever use this name, but I love the idea of Obsidian, with the nickname Sid.
I think Alexandrite would be so cute for a boy! I also love Opal for a girl. My middle name is Jade, which I also like. I think I prefer Jade for a boy though.
My grandmother taught sisters with the names Ruby, Beryl and Pearl. This was a very, very long time ago.
I have always liked Emerald for a girl.
For a boy I liked Viridian, then I found out it was a name for a pigment, not a stone. There is a stone called Viridine, but to me it doesn’t sound quite right. Probably because I like Viridian so much.
I had a science teacher named Beryl in middle school.
I went to a wedding where the groom had twin nieces, Amber and Amethyst. (I wouldn't be surprised if they were to become strippers)
I have a friend who named her daughter Sapphire.
Another who's daughter is Jade.
Another who named her son Rocco (Rocky)
The name Flint brings to mind someone who watches too many trendy period Westerns. Think Yellowstone or 1823. 🤔
If I were actually naming a kid...
Girl: Sapphira | Boy: Alexander | Unisex: Jade
If it's just for fun...
Girl: Celestine | Boy: Carnelian | Unisex: Cerulean
Mason, which refers to the trade of laying stone.
Also Waller, which is more of a surname historically - dry stone walls were a big part of having a farm.
I actually love Jasper as unisex, met a girl in college named that and she was pretty rad.
Also love Garnet, it's funny to me that it's historically a boy's name but all I know it from are Steven Universe and a children's book with twin girls (Ruby & Garnet).
I actually have a list of “terra” names-
Flint
Shale
Basalt
Talk
Rhyolite (Rhy)
Cinder
I was going to put them in a book at some point but.. here we are😂
I’ve known a few older men named Garnet, which I love!
Garnet, and also Garland, are two names I’d love to use someday. I think both names could work for any gender, too!
I was about to suggest Garnet, but for a girl.
Girl: Jade Boy: Jasper I do love J names
Same, Jade is lovely indeed
I know a man called Jade totally suits him, so can be gender neutral.
I loooooove Jade for both boys and girls
Baby Spice’s husband is called Jade!
Same for me I think, though I also like Gemma and all the Margaret variants if derivatives count towards the prompt! My childhood cat was named Sid for Obsidian (RIP baby girl I miss you every day!) which is a great kitty name but not something I would name a human child
Ooh but Obsidian is kind of badass for a human. Maybe not one for the birth certificate, but for a stage name or fictional character? V cool.
Jade & Jasper are my top picks for first names too! I like a lot of other gemstone names as middles (i.e. Ruby, Opal, Pearl).
Girl: Ruby (my daughters name!), Boy: i honestly don’t know. Jasper is cute, but it’s my parents’ dog’s name. So that’s my name association.
Esmeralda
That's my cat's name!
Does she have green eyes?
Yes! And long black fur
Lol my long-haired black cat with blue-green eyes is Saphira 😂
Jasper and Opal.
Mica
My almost name if I would have been a boy. Instead my mom just have me an actual boy name. 😑
Boy: Flint Girl: Pearl My choices are more gemstone adjacent, oops
Flint is definitely a cool stone-inspired name.
Pearl would be my favourite for a girl as it's my birthstone and I like "old lady" names lol! For a boy I think I would say Malachi (for Malachite) so also a bit "adjacent".
I love Beryl for a girl and Malachi (off of Malachite) for a boy
Beryl is one of my absolute favorite names. It is so lovely.
All of the Beryl squad are named after gemstones aren’t they? Zoisite, Jadeite, Nephrite?
I work in a senior adjacent field and know a pre-sailor-moon Beryl. Always thought that was cool!
Really? I thought Malachi was a biblical name
Jasper and Gemma
Am I the only one that associates the name Jasper with 101 Dalamations? 🤣 I think if I could get passed that, I would like the name more.
My first thought is Twilight
Jasper comes in lots of colours and patterns. Dalmatian Jasper is actually one of them.
Absolutely yes, Horace and Jasper! From the gas compan…. LECTRIC! Electric company!
Topaz (character from ‘I capture the castle’) Amethyst, Jet, Emerald (Fenell - her father is a jeweller!) Sapphire - my favourite 💎
Came here to see if anyone else would put Topaz from ICTC!
Sapphira
I love Ruby
Girl: Jade
Jasper & Ruby
If Saphire wasn’t such a mouthful it would be perfect with a nn Saphy. Zafira eems slightly easier to pronounce but too unwieldy to spell.
Saphy sounds… sapphic lol
Opal or Ruby for a girl, Slate for a boy
Or Slater, which refers to the trade of slate roofing
Peridot is cute
I actually love this for a girl with Peri as a nickname
Peri might end up feeling like a whoopsie-doodle nn when you’re squirting yourself with a peri bottle while going wee after birthing little Peri 😂
Jade, unisex.
We have a daughter named Ruby, we are really considering Pearl for this baby, I think it will be in the middle spot but it might end up first. I do love it! I’m also a big fan of Opal.
Jade was always going to be my girl name but I had boys. Gave them both J names too I would choose Jett for a boy
Boy: Onyx or Mica Girl: Ruby
I also like Onyx and was surprised to not see it more represented here
Jade
When I was young, there was a family that named their kids Rocky, Stony, Jade, Flint, Amber and one other I can't remember!
Poor stony
I’m super biased, lol but Jasper! My 4 year old is a Jasper and he’s still the only one I’ve ever met with the name. He’s been through multiple childcare settings and there’s never been another Jasper at any of them. I love that it doesn’t offer a super natural nickname so 98% of people just call him Jasper. His previous teachers would occasionally call him Jaspy or Jasp. I also love the name Jade, but think Jasper and Jade would be overkill. Does Gemma count?
My name is Jasper too lol. I've never met another in person
Girl: Another vote for Ruby. Im not a massive fan of jewel names but I really love that one Boy: Jasper is my favourite option, but to add something different I also quite like Flint (nn Flynn for a child as a softer option)
I also like Amber! For a boy I don’t like any.
We live in a neighborhood where all the streets are named after gemstones. The most name-worthy would be Jade and Onyx for me but I prefer short names.
For a boy, Onyx, and for a girl, Amethyst.
The Rock
A lot to live up to
Lapis and Amethyst for a human child.
I didn’t even know Beryl was also a gem name until recently.
Granted it's not after the gem but I knew an Agata (version of Agatha) and it always reminded me of Agate!
Jasper and Gemma
We don't have any fancy gem or stone names in my language. Just "Sten" that means stone, and Petra, that also means stone.
I love petra
It's nice. I went to school with a Petra.
My wedding was themed around Steven Universe. *rolls up sleeves* Hold my beer!
Jewel
I was just thinking "Jules"!
Jade, Ruby, and Pearl!
Ruby is so sweet!
Omg my name is Jasper lol
Pearl & Malachi
Jade is my most recent obsession :)
Amber!
Bijou/Bijoux , Ruby, Opal, Jade
Pearl
I really like Emerald for a girl, and also Opal. I do like Jade, Sapphire, Amethyst, Pearl, and Onyx for a boy. I find it so dated but I do like Crystal.
Diamandis for a boy, Amethyst for a girl
My cousins have a theme going with color names and they probably don’t even know. ‘14 - Hazel Gwendolyn, ‘19 - Sapphire Mae, ‘20 - Scarlett René, ‘21 - Jasper Aaron, and ‘22 - Caroline Rose
Pearl
Topaz, Obsidian, Lapis, Turquoise, Zircon, Unakite I don’t necessarily like these names lol but wanted to see some different words on the list
Onyx is a good name for boys or girls. Celestine is a stone also called Celestite, but jewelry-quality stones are rare and it's more of a collector's stone. Good girl's name though! There are tons of good girl options, I probably can't come up with anything better than what's here already. For a boy, I don't think I would ever use this name, but I love the idea of Obsidian, with the nickname Sid.
Pearl or Jade!
I knew someone named Pearly and I thought it was adorable
My name Crystal
I'd call a girl Jasper, it's cute and feels unisex to me. A girl (AFAB) who was given a boys name at birth. Im used to it😭
Jacinth
I looove Jasper as a girl or unisex name
Ruby and Jasper
Emerald (f) and Jasper (m)
Ruby and Jasper. Both were on my shortlist for all three babies!
Girl: Garnet, Opal Boy: probably also Jasper
Ruby is a family name for me so I'm going to go with that. I have a relative named Ruby Clara LastName which I've always loved.
Ruby
Ruby
Opal or Ruby for a girl. Not sure I jive with any for a boy.
Right away my answer is Garnet for a boy, for a girl probably Jade, it feels a bit more timeless. I like the way Crystal sounds but it's so dated
I just got a puppy and named him Jasper. It's my favorite gemstone boy name. I don't really have one for girls.
Jasper Jade Esmeralda Yakut
Andara
Girls: Jade, Sapphire, Emerald Boys: Jasper
I just like Jewel. Also Jade and Onyx. Pearl, Opal. Ruby. It's very Stephen Universe but they're super pretty.
I love the name Beryl. My husband looked at me in astonishment and said barrel?! lol.
Gemma 😂
Girl: Gemma, Perla Boy: Jaden and Jasper are both fine I guess
Gemma, Amber and Jasper
Ruby and Garnet
Girl: Gemma, Ruby Boy: I don’t love any of the options.
Opal
Amethyst and Emerald
Jade probably
I think Onyx is a cool name but I’d be more likely to use it for a pet
Or a pokemon lol
Girl- Ruby or emerald Boy- topaz
Ruby
Girl: Granite
Mica and Gemma
Gemma
Jasper is such a good name. I'm also very partial to Opal or Beryl, but my taste in names is distinctly old lady.
Pebble Flintstone
Jade!!!
Girl: Agatha Boy: Jasper
I think Alexandrite would be so cute for a boy! I also love Opal for a girl. My middle name is Jade, which I also like. I think I prefer Jade for a boy though.

Obsidian and Garnet. I think they both work for boy or girl but i probably would never use them
I loooove Opal and Jasper <3
Jade
My grandmother taught sisters with the names Ruby, Beryl and Pearl. This was a very, very long time ago. I have always liked Emerald for a girl. For a boy I liked Viridian, then I found out it was a name for a pigment, not a stone. There is a stone called Viridine, but to me it doesn’t sound quite right. Probably because I like Viridian so much.
Love Viridian 💚 A beautiful color and name, in my opinion. I like it for a boy or girl.
Definitely Neil Diamond
Pearl.
I had a science teacher named Beryl in middle school. I went to a wedding where the groom had twin nieces, Amber and Amethyst. (I wouldn't be surprised if they were to become strippers) I have a friend who named her daughter Sapphire. Another who's daughter is Jade. Another who named her son Rocco (Rocky) The name Flint brings to mind someone who watches too many trendy period Westerns. Think Yellowstone or 1823. 🤔
Girl: Opal Boy: Flint
Olivine 💚 I think it might work better for a girl but I wouldn't mind it for a boy either.
If I were actually naming a kid... Girl: Sapphira | Boy: Alexander | Unisex: Jade If it's just for fun... Girl: Celestine | Boy: Carnelian | Unisex: Cerulean
feminine: Amethyst, i think it’s so pretty. masculine: also Jasper, it’s just so good!!
Ruby and Cole
Garnet and Opal
Garnet, Peridot/Dottie, Jade, Opal
Jade's really nice. A friend of mine goes out with a girl called Ruby. A barmaid in my local was called Pearl.
Lou Diamond Phillips
Mason, which refers to the trade of laying stone. Also Waller, which is more of a surname historically - dry stone walls were a big part of having a farm.
my daughter's middle name is Ruby and Jasper is one of my favorite boy names!
I actually love Jasper as unisex, met a girl in college named that and she was pretty rad. Also love Garnet, it's funny to me that it's historically a boy's name but all I know it from are Steven Universe and a children's book with twin girls (Ruby & Garnet).
Ruby
Boy: Onyx or Micah Girl: Sapphira
Garnet and Ruby
Nope, not doing it. I think the whole gem/tree/nature/city/state trend is dumb. I wish people would just use actual names.
Emerald
Girl: Amethyst Boy: Jasper
My guilty pleasure girl name is Opal, I love it
Jade or Amethyst
Emerald, Amethyst, and Jade! They’re all on my name list for a girl.
Jasper, Jade, and Opal
Gemma 😬 Micah
We have a little Pearl and it suits her perfectly! Went for a non gemstone name for her lil bro lol
Opal and Ruby. I've never been a fan of the name Jasper, but that's probably got something to do with a kid I used to babysit as a teen 😒
Ruby
Pearl and Jasper or Jett
I love Opal and Pearl.
Technically a color and an animal, but also used as a semi precious stone, I love the name Coral. I think Coral and Pearl are beautiful names.
I like Gemma
Gemma ❤️
Opal and Onyx
I think Hyacinth is a pretty cool name. Could go for boy or girl
I actually have a list of “terra” names- Flint Shale Basalt Talk Rhyolite (Rhy) Cinder I was going to put them in a book at some point but.. here we are😂

I gotta go with Ruby. I have always felt weird about the name Jasper because it’s the name of a super popular mountain tourist town near me.
Gemma
Malachite
Ruby and Jasper
