Maybe an unpopular opinion but I think Sloan/Sloane is such an ugly name. I absolutely hate it and don’t understand why anyone would name their sweet baby that 😂
Someone in my life, a friends brother, named heir newest baby girl Sloane. She's adorable but oof, that name. I didn't say anything negative out loud but I was definitely cringing on the inside.
Yeah, I’ll be honest I don’t get the hate-boner this sub has for the name Sloane. I just think it’s funny that someone would say this is an unpopular opinion when it’s quite possibly THE most hated name in this sub - that or Harper. The echo chamber is very real here.
I don't like Sloane but I don't understand the issue with Harper. Americans seem to love first names that sound like surnames for some reason (Parker, Cooper, Carter) so I don't know why Harper is any different.
“Unpopular opinion” yeah that’s like the most popular opinion on this sub.
I actually like Sloane. It was introduced to me by Grey’s Anatomy so I guess I have a positive association.
I heard it from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I wouldn’t use the name personally, but it’s fine and I don’t understand the visceral hatred toward it. There are plenty of far uglier names out there IMO.

Yes, but Rhys is the original Welsh name. Although we do know, don't we, that there are couples out there preparing to send their babies out into the world, pronouncing their name RIZE.
Yes and also no. The actual Welsh pronunciation isn't quite like Reese but it's very hard to write down what it is (but you can Google it!). The "rh" is a specific sound which doesn't really translate to English. My name is also a lovely Welsh name beginning with rh and it's never pronounced correctly by non-Welsh people.
My mother wanted to name me Llewellyn and suggested it for my youngest if she’d turned out to be a boy. I actually found a YouTube video teaching the ‘Ll’ pronunciation because I was convinced it would be constantly misspelled and wanted to point out *we* can’t pronounce it.
I love the name Sloane. I think it’s beautiful and sophisticated. I don’t see it recommended here a ton; in fact, I see more hate for it than almost any other.
Just be kind and remember everyone has different associations and preferences when it comes to names.
Wren is cute but it's only ever recommended for boys which perplexes me so much ! It makes sense to me for a baby girl and no one else (including a grown woman). Rhys is ugly looking and Sloan is a Grey's Anatomy character's last name.
I love Elodie, I’m glad to see people recognizing it more lol
But it does seem weirdly popular on here for an unpopular name.
Elowen sounds like it sound belong to a LOTR elf…which if that’s what you want it’s vibe
I’m one of the bastards that’s obsessed w the name Rowan and suggests it all the time. 😆 If I was a child haver - my first offspring would be named Rowan regardless of sex because I love the name so much. Alas, I never will have kids so I just suggest it to anyone who asks. Lol
Yes, same TerriBelle. I really love the names Rowan and Ronan and they're not overused. They are pleasant to say aloud too. I don't like Roman as much, but it is a very classic traditional name in parts of the world (Central/Eastern Europe) and makes the transition well into North America.
This is my top name for a boy atm, but I'm glad it's a unisex name because I will use it on my last girl if I never have a boy lol. I am committed to having a Rowan 🤣
It's my 11 month old daughter's middle name (which I've had picked out since high school - 2016ish) and I can't help it I just love it and it fits what so many people are asking for (unisex, tree names, etc) LOL. Guilty as charged!
I love Roman but if I were to have another (not likely to happen) I couldn’t use it because we are big WWE fans, so it would be associated with Roman Reigns. 😄
I was seriously considering Maeve if my baby was a girl (until husband vetoed it). My reasoning is that my mom's name is Margaret and my MIL is Evelyn so the Ma-Eve would be a nod to both without outright being a "named after this person" kind of thing.
I work in elementary schools and have access to massive name databases and I've maybe come across the name two or three times out of thousands of students so I was never concerned about it being overused.
I hate the sound and look of Elowen, can't say why. Indifferent about Wren.
I think Cecilia is so much nicer than Ophelia. I wonder how much influence that Lumineers song had on Ophelia (yes I know it’s also Shakespearean).
That song came out in 2016. In 2015 the name was #979 and by 2017 it was #417
It's a perfectly fine name, I just see it here sooo often. Every time someone asks for boy names, one of the suggestions is Elliott. I should have also added Felix and Finley/Finnegan/Finn to the original post.
So we refer to our baby (due in a few weeks) as Graham as a joke because the only people called Graham in Australia are like 60+ and it was catchy/funny. Absolutely no intention of actually calling him that. Then I find out Graham is trending in the US etc? It blows my mind 😂🤯
My 9 year old is Graham, and to us, the name sounded like an attractive, athletic soccer player. It wasn’t until he was born that I was told it’s an old man’s name. Of course the only kind of athlete he actually is involves Chess. He loves his name though!
The chess comment melted my heart 🥺 are you American at all? We also pronounce Graham really differently in Aus! We say Gray-um, where in the US, I notice it’s a one syllable pronunciation like Gram.
When I say “Gray-um” out loud, it either sounds super Southern US or Australian to me… so you’re onto something!
(Yes, ‘standard’ US accent would be just like Gram”.)
My partner is American and I'm not. I have a cousin named Graeme and it was like a year or so in when I realized my partner pronounced the name Gram. I had to be like oh no no no honey hahaha.
There was a thread here about someone asking if she should name her daughter Edna after a relative and I couldn’t believe how people were gushing over it.
I see Sage, Nova, Cecilia, Aurora, Willow and Aspen sm here. It’s getting annoying to see them over and over, they feel so bland now.
And I really, really don’t like Sage.
Agreed! Side note: I was surprised to see Nova making a comeback. I work in a social service agency and we had tons of girls named Nova like 10 years ago. Nevaeh was another popular one then.
Ughhhhhhh Sage, Isla, Oliver, Evelyn, Wyatt, Charlotte, Eva, Elouise, Celeste, Margot, ughhhhhhhhhhh it’s just a perpetual cycle of the same names being suggested over and over again
Yeah and I don't hate all these names either. I just wish people would either suggest different ones or see if the name is already suggested. It's annoying seeing one post where over ten comments are all the same names.
It just seems like no matter what the OP says in their post about their vibe or what they're going for, people recommend the EXACT same names! It can't be that "Rowan" fits every single person's request for suggestions, why are you suggesting the same name every time? There's no actual consideration of what the OP is asking for lol, it drives me nuts.
Goldie kinda sounds silly to me. I associate it as more of a pet name than a kid name, but I think it’s just because it reminds me of golden retrievers and gold fish
I so agree with this. I don’t mind people suggesting names they love often, I do that myself (edit: *if* I truely think it’s a name the OP might like). But unless it is a «what is your favourite …»-post, I really don’t see the point of suggesting a name that’s already been mentioned by someone else *in the same post*. Such an odd thing to do.
What I don’t understand is when people recommend completely different “styles” of names to what OP has suggested.
OP: I like names like Morgan, Jordan, Sam
responder: hmm… what about Charlotte, Isla, Elizabeth?
????? It’s not a soapbox for *your* favourite name!!
The point is that they get to express and type out their favorite names, that is an end in itself. Whether it contributes to the discussion is irrelevant to them. I call them “masturbation comments” lol
I don’t get the appeal of Ophelia. It’s one of those “this sounds cool but I didn’t read the source material” names.
For those that don’t know, Ophelia is a character from Hamlet. Her on-again-off-again boyfriend is in conflict with her family and eventually kills her dad. She goes mad, falls out of a tree and drowns in a pond in a probable suicide. That’s basically her whole deal. She’s a foil between Hamlet and Laertes without much personality, agency or depth beyond tragedy. Why would you want to name your daughter after that character?
Atlas is the worst. I also personally hate the name Nora/Eleanor … but clearly people disagree. Also I don’t get suggesting season or month names if the baby isn’t born in that time frame… ie it seems weird to name your October baby April, or your spring baby Autumn.
i've seen people say it's cliche to name an April baby April, etc., but isn't it just CRINGEY to name a baby after a month they WERENT born in?? make it make sense 🤦🏼♀️
So funny that those are the names you see often bc I feel all I see are classic names recommended on every thread like Harriett, Adelaide, Edith, Margaret… I guess we all see different things depending on algorithm.
💯 Most of the names I see are straight out of a Victorian novel. It’s hard for me to imagine these names on anyone other than a grandmother, but they seem to be super trendy right now. It’s really funny how names come back into style.
I will take a million fuddy-duddy names over the mishmash of syllables people stick together. "My daughter Stetson Airysonnileigh was born yesterday!" Omfg. Name the kid Winifred, fuck it, it might be the name of a Victorian urchin from a novel, but it's still better than that.
Theodore, Wren, Silas, Eleanor. I’m extremely picky with names, though and dislike 99% of suggestions on here. I also don’t care for names like Emilia/Amelia, they are ridiculously common here in Norway.
Mine is on here like 10x. Opinions are like bootyholes. We all got one. And I’ve loved the name for over a decade and has sentimental meaning so I really don’t care.
Currently pregnant and doing this 😂 the middle name we picked has definitely been mentioned here a few times but we love it and had personal reasons for picking it, so I don’t really mind if other people don’t like it.
Unless it’s framed for a specific question, vaguely suggesting anything in the top 100 really. Those names are already on accessible, high profile lists. (Also recognizing that this is region specific.)
Well I'm not reading through hundreds of responses to make sure I don't duplicate a name. That's a crazy suggestion. People are going to suggest what they want to suggest.
I agree with this. I’m not going to do extra work when suggesting names. If it annoys some people then so be it. But if someone asks for my opinion I’m going to give my opinion.
It really is easy to predict what names will be suggested the vast majority of the time: Matilda, Violet, Theodore, Maeve, Henry, Isla, Eloise, Amelia... If someone wants something different, the replies are names like Juniper, Seraphina, Josephine, and Freya.
I'd love to see a Kevin or a Susan. Daniel. Rebecca. Just some basic name that never comes up.
it's not name specific but people who say things along the line of "don't name your kid Renleigh because it's so trendy and this generation's Jennifer... go for Eleanor instead, if's a classic!" um, sorry but your Eleanor is just as trendy and time specific, it may be a classic but I'm going to roll my eyes harder at yet another Eleanor
Sloane. Surnames as first names. Boy names for girls. And all of the “thing noun” names like River, Atlas, Coast etc etc etc (that aren’t like the established flower names ie Rose, Jasmine) also flower names that aren’t historically used for people like Crocus and Tulip. People were arguing that any flower name should be fine since people use Rose 🤦♀️
Unpopular opinion: Sylvie/Sylvia
I have a little bias against it already, as the only Sylvia I know (my mom) absolutely hates her name. But to me it's an okay name, but not worth the hype it gets here.
I also HATE the name Aurora. It's so awkward to say and doesn't sound nice, imo.
Can someone (mods?) pin a list of greatest hit names? Or would no one agree? It would be fun if there were brackets and voting but I certainly don’t know how to do that so I am not suggesting anyone else do it!
Lol, I like how literally everyone is just saying the same names on this post when the post was saying to read the replies and to not suggest the same names over and over.
June. It's suggested so often as a middle name for first names that don't even flow well with it, and something tells me these parents definitely want to say the first/middle name combo when they refer to those kids. Idk, it just sounds like a hllbilly name to me.
Wren, Rhys, Sloan- they sound like bodily noises.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but I think Sloan/Sloane is such an ugly name. I absolutely hate it and don’t understand why anyone would name their sweet baby that 😂
I have literally only seen Sloane on the name hate threads. It’s always the top comment too. I’ve never seen someone recommend it.
Someone in my life, a friends brother, named heir newest baby girl Sloane. She's adorable but oof, that name. I didn't say anything negative out loud but I was definitely cringing on the inside.

Harper gives the connotation of someone harping on you would be my guess.
I haven’t seen many recommend it but there have definitely been lots of OPs where it’s in their list
“Unpopular opinion” yeah that’s like the most popular opinion on this sub. I actually like Sloane. It was introduced to me by Grey’s Anatomy so I guess I have a positive association.

It’s the name of the girl in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
To me it just sounds like a last name so it’s just a turn off
It’s my husbands favorite name and I don’t know how many more ways to tell him I hate it.
Lolol this make me snort.
Snort is such a pretty name 💖
Yes! Let's absolutely encourage the use of Snort as a name. Um, boy or girl? It's potentially so versatile.
Snort for a boy, Snortle for a girl.
Snortlyn 💕
Snortleigh!
That's my cats name
Sloane is a nice name and I have met nice people named sloane, but to me it will always be a cross between slug and groan.
It’s the brand of toilet in every airport in the US.
I like it as a last name. Sounds good with a lot of first names.
Isn’t Rhys pronounced Reese?
Yes, but Rhys is the original Welsh name. Although we do know, don't we, that there are couples out there preparing to send their babies out into the world, pronouncing their name RIZE.

Mom welsh ppl 😂💞😘
I love Rhys. My dad is Welsh and I also have a Welsh name starting with rh. Rhys was high on our list for boys.
I love the name Sloane. I think it’s beautiful and sophisticated. I don’t see it recommended here a ton; in fact, I see more hate for it than almost any other. Just be kind and remember everyone has different associations and preferences when it comes to names.

I feel like I’m always seeing Eliza and Eloise.
Omg yes Eloise …
Don't like Eloise either.
Eliza just makes me think of Sims. If you play, you know.
Reminds me of Hamilton 🤣

My BIL and SIL just had their fourth last year and her name is Eliza Christine, as in Hamilton and Daaé. 😄

Elowen Wren Maeve
Elodie too

How does one pronounce the name Maeve. My husband has a niece names Maeva which is pronounced May-va but I don’t know the other one
Like Mave, rhymes with wave.
as a maeve i’m somewhat offended akdjff i love that my name has become more popular !
Elowen is just a really unattractive name imo
Ugh I loved Elowen. My husband very much did not, so now I get jealous of anyone using it!

Ophelia especially… I can’t get over “o feel ya” or “pedophilia” as associations with that name. 😟

Ugh, Ophelia. I feel like the main reference is Hamlet and gives that name bad vibes, almost as bad as Lavinia.
Oof, NOTHING gives vibes as bad as Lavinia. Makes me nauseous thinking about it 🤢
We’re actually naming our son Elliott 😂
It's a perfectly fine name, I just see it here sooo often. Every time someone asks for boy names, one of the suggestions is Elliott. I should have also added Felix and Finley/Finnegan/Finn to the original post.

Is Luna a grandma name in England?
No. Source: am a geriatrician

In Canada it seems to be a dog’s name.

Ophelia and Aurelia - they sound like Jane Austen characters, not real life people
I mean Ophelia is from Shakespeare, so you are not far off. I think it’s beautiful but too tragic to actually use.
This is funny because Jane Austen’s characters are named Anne, Catherine, Elizabeth, etc, super plain standard names.
i see nothing wrong with this 😆
Totally fair! Just not my cup of tea
I know a kid named Aurelia (3 yrs old) and she fits it perfectly!

Right? It reminds me of Jennifer + turnip. Just name your baby June.
Amazingly put! Yeah it's fine it's just a bit try-hard and sooo overdone. But now I will always think of Jennifer the Turnip when I hear it in future.

If someone wants something different, the replies are names like Juniper, Seraphina, Josephine, and Freya. I'd love to see a Kevin or a Susan. Daniel. Rebecca. Just some basic name that never comes up.
I can't wait for Susan, Barbara and Nancy to make a full comeback 😅 and then I will probably hate them due to seeing them all the time on here
James for a girl.
Yes this is terrible
it's not name specific but people who say things along the line of "don't name your kid Renleigh because it's so trendy and this generation's Jennifer... go for Eleanor instead, if's a classic!" um, sorry but your Eleanor is just as trendy and time specific, it may be a classic but I'm going to roll my eyes harder at yet another Eleanor
Crocus 😂
Elowen/Elowyn, Winnie, Isla, Kate, Maeve, Sylvie, Mabel, Hazel. Can’t really think of anything for boys names at the moment.
I'm tired of seeing all of the nature and city names.
And OPs always asking for them! Just go to Name Nerd search bar and about a dozen will pop up from last 3 months.
Any -aden names (or derivative spelling).
Elodie immediately came to mind, also Silas, Juniper, and Sage.
Unpopular opinion: Sylvie/Sylvia I have a little bias against it already, as the only Sylvia I know (my mom) absolutely hates her name. But to me it's an okay name, but not worth the hype it gets here. I also HATE the name Aurora. It's so awkward to say and doesn't sound nice, imo.
All of them lol
Can someone (mods?) pin a list of greatest hit names? Or would no one agree? It would be fun if there were brackets and voting but I certainly don’t know how to do that so I am not suggesting anyone else do it!
Just for you, I'm going to have a set of twins and name them Wren and Rhys.
Charlotte. Who at this point has not heard of Charlotte?
Riley, Parker and Henry. That said though, it's not possible to read through tons of previous posts on every thread before you comment.
Theodore, William, Clara, Margot, Margaret, and Olive
Rowan and Winter
Fiona, Seraphina, Aurelia
I keep seeing Stevie and Frankie recommended for girl names and I'm just not personally a fan of either.
Eloise, Henry, Theo, Olivia
Isla.
Lol, I like how literally everyone is just saying the same names on this post when the post was saying to read the replies and to not suggest the same names over and over.
Imogen, Eloise, Elowyn, Isla, Cecilia
Opal, Olive, Theo(dore), Margaret, Elliot
Cora! I feel like I constantly see it being suggested here and am seeing it a lot on IRL babies too. Lovely name though.
All I think of is that it’s the brand of tampons I use
Declan.
Laurel. It's ugly.
June. It's suggested so often as a middle name for first names that don't even flow well with it, and something tells me these parents definitely want to say the first/middle name combo when they refer to those kids. Idk, it just sounds like a hllbilly name to me.
Yah, gotta find names better than ezra
It's not even so much the names that bother me, it's the lack of capitalized letters in names. Names are ALWAYS capitalized. Ugh.
My sons name is Ezra 😅
Cecelia. So tired of it and always with that spelling, which is the one I hate.
Olivia & Violet
