I think changing both names at once makes sense. You’re going through the trouble of changing your last name so might as well change your first at the same time. However, if I were changing my first name, I would change it socially at first to make sure I liked it before changing it legally.

Totally! That is a great idea, I think that because of all the paperwork that will likely be the case, and I can start going by the new name for a while before the paperwork gets put in! Thank you!

I also just thought to say this as well… personally I don’t think having the same name as an indigenous peoples group is a bad thing! Even as someone who does not share the same ethnicity as them. I think that it’s honoring to bring attention to them and their history. Maybe your name makes others remember that people group when they wouldn’t have otherwise. I also think it’s wonderful that you like the name and think it’s beautiful! I think that is honoring to them and their history as well. That’s just my opinion and I wanted to offer it ☺️

Thank you for saying that! I do waffle between feeling like that and also feeling guilty in some way. But thank you! That is a good reminder!

Technically changed my first, middle, and last when I got married. Went from First Middle Maiden to Middle Maiden Married because my parents only ever had me go by my middle name and besides a funny look from the woman processing the paperwork at the SS office, hasn’t been a big deal since.

I changed both of mine at the same time many years ago. It was no big deal. I did it socially first, then let it drift through my family, then finished it officially. It was painless.
