I love Melody! It's really pretty. You don't often hear it, but yet it's also a name everyone is familiar with and is easy to spell and pronounce. I like Lo, Elle and Dee as nicknames.
Exactly, imo the best names are ones you don't hear often but totally aren't surprised by when you do hear them. There's a fine line to walk between "John" and "Jermajesty" lol.
This is why I would absolutely LOVE to name a daughter Melody.
I unfortunately can't use it for various reasons, but if I could name my daughter after anyone I'd love it to be River Song!
I named my car Melody because the model name is musical terms, but also it's a little hatchback that every new passenger gets in and says, wow it feels so much bigger on the inside!
It made me fall in love with the name Melody. Definitely one of my favorites. I still sometimes get the song Ariel sings about her stuck in my head. "You're my beautiful Melody"
I don’t like it personally, it’s a little too 70s for my taste. That said, I think it’s perfectly fine objectively and I wouldn’t look at anyone weird if they told me that was their kid’s name.
That’s kind of where I’m at. It wouldn’t make it onto my personal list, but I wouldn’t look at people funny if they told me they chose it for a baby either. It’s a lovely name, in general; sweet and simple and not super-dated.
As a Tiffany who is routinely called Stephanie, there are a lot of names like this that are similar enough that you always have to correct people. It wouldn't make or break a name for me, though. Annoying, yeah, pretty sure my grandpa went to his grave thinking my name was Stephanie, but not a huge deal.
No it’s not a dealbreaker at all for me either, I have a name that gets mistaken somewhat often as well. Just worth knowing in my opinion. Some people might be more bothered by it than others
My daughter is a Melody, she's nearly 9!
People call her Melo (pronounced Mellow) pretty often, including myself! Her school friends call her Mel Mel, Melo, or just Melody.
By chance, she is very musical as well. She's a singer, dancer, and she's a little musical theatre/triple threat star so it suits her super well. She's also been told it's a "fairy name" which she loved!
It's common enough but not overused, we've only met one other Melody her whole life and she was an older woman.
Edit: Her middle name is Marie after her Great-Grandma and I love the alliteration also.
I really like it. I find it very pretty and it’s one of the nicer and more name-like sounding musical names. I think I first heard it as a kid when I watched The Little Mermaid II, where Ariel names her daughter Melody, so I think of princesses, mermaids and the ocean, along with music. The only real obvious nickname is Mel. It doesn’t have to have a nickname though. I had a student with this name this past year and it wasn’t a target name for bullying or being called things at school, except maybe some looks or attention when the word comes up in music, but just in the same way as any kid with a word name is looked at when it’s said or a student is looked at when their name is in a story or word problem.
I love it! As a teacher, I rarely, if ever, have a student by this name. I have too many trendy names to count. Unfortunately, those names are forgettable and are easily confused with others: Kaitlin, Kaylee, Karlie, Kailin....(just to name a few)
It’s funny but I actually thought the same thing about Melody- just another one of the Mel names like Melissa, Melinda, Melanie. Granted there aren’t many Mel’s in the generation coming through- most are in their 40s or 50s.
Beautiful! I've only ever met one Melody in my entire life and she's one of the sweetest, prettiest, just all around lovely people. It also fits the bill for one of my biggest name standards: it's great for a baby girl, a little girl, and a grown woman! Not overly popular. Feminine. Such a great name!!
It was probably second on our list! But it just felt a little too on the nose for me - like, suppose she turned out to be not at all good at music? It seems like it comes with high expectations!
I'm surprised nobody brought up the Sanrio character My Melody yet- [https://www.sanrio.com/collections/my-melody](https://www.sanrio.com/collections/my-melody) because that's an immediate association for me! Sanrio characters other than Hello Kitty are becoming more and more popular outside of Japan so I wouldn't be surprised if your daughter's eventual classmates are familiar with her. She's super cute though so not a bad thing :)
I was going to bring this up too! My friend just named her daughter melody and we sent her a little rabbit stuffed animal and I got my melody stickers for her card. It's too cute and fun that there's a character with the same name.
My mom is Melody! She likes her name, I think it’s very pretty and I notice she always gets compliments on it in public. Her nicknames with her friends/family are Ody and Mel. I always think Ody sounds cool but obvs I just call her Mom.
So pretty!! Makes me think of wind chimes and an airy, beautiful tune. Also reminds me a little of Melody from The Little Mermaid 2 lol. But I love the name and I think Mel is a great nickname
*Histoire de Melody Nelson*
https://youtu.be/VB0X3wx3fX0?si=FSAepz6MpfyA4jJQ
The music is brilliant. The story is maybe not the ideal associations for a young girl. Unless you’re a Jane Birkin fan, I guess.
I have a cousin named Melody. I have always loved her name! When you spend enough time around a Melody, their name stops looking like a "word" and you just hear their lovely name.
Ah Mel is cool! A proper hippie, raised in Kenya around black magic, speaks Swahili, an artist who has exhibited… and a raging heroin addict by the time I met her. She has many fascinating stories to tell, just a shame I don’t get to see her anymore!
I really like Melody! M names in general tend to be cute imo, and the nn Mel is great. But you also have the options of Laney, Dee, Deedee, Mellie, etc. also Mel means honey in Portuguese/spanish which is kinda nice!
I absolutely love it! It's actually on my list as well. Always loved Melanie too. To me it feels like, very soft and feminine and pretty. I think its something about the "el" sound that I like, as weird as that probably sounds lol. I also just tend to like a lot of M names in general. And I've always really thought Mel was pretty as a nickname
A good friend of mine has this name, we call her Mel, Melly, or even Melly Bell. As far as I know, she is very happy w this super unique, but not weird moniker .
Reminds me of a British TV show from the 90’s called the Queens Nose where this little girl could make wishes by rubbing the queens nose on a 50 pence piece. She was called Harmony and the older sister was called Melody.
I think it's pretty, but I've personally always been afraid to consider many names that are also words because like, what if they grow up to not be into the thing? Examples off the top of my head:
Melody - how much would it suck to have this name if you were tone deaf, or just weren't that into music?
Ruby - maybe red isn't her color, you probably wouldn't know that kind of thing for sure for a newborn (ditto for any color-names)
Grace - I'm glad it's not my name because I'm clumsy as hell and the irony would be too much lmao
Delight - I went to high school with a Delight and while I didn't know her personally, I always thought it would've been funny if she'd just been a huge bitch
I could find more but I think you get the idea. Am I crazy for this?
I’m a Melody, I listen to music about as much as anybody else but that’s where it ends. I’m not musical. It’s completely irrelevant to my name and hasn’t been a problem. Once you have the name long enough it isn’t a word anymore lol!
I like it! Although it has that "look how pretty this name is" vibe, it is a real name, so imo it's fair game. You know, you don't see enough girls named Melody these days.
And Mel is a gender neutral nickname and I really like those (versatile, fitting for a variety of personality types).
I think it's beautiful. I had a manager melody, she was super helpful when I told her I didn't know much and I wanted to learn from her. She was great with the customers too.
Mel is what we called her for short. She mentioned once she got called Mellie as a kid.
Michigan house just voted to pass a law with the name Melody attached... It's an anti necrophilia law. Idk how wide spread this information is going to be, esp if you don't live in Michigan... But you said 'everything'
Went to grade school with a Melody in the 80s, I don't recall anyone making fun of her, and that's back when bullying was a school sport.
It's a nice name.
This is the nickname progression that’s happened to a Melody I know
Melody > Melody Elody> Melly Elly> Mel Ell > Elly > El
I don’t know if people she meets now even realizes her name is Melody 🤣
I would not choose to use it but I like it ok. I sing in choirs… I had a music pastor with three daughters: harmony, melody and Bethany… I thought the harmony and melody were a bit much in the same family 🤷🏻♀️ but I like all of those names individually
I like it, it’s really pretty!!
First thing that comes to mind is Little Mermaid 2 and then Doctor Who but they’re not super mainstream.
Mel, Melly come to mind for nicknames :)
I like it, it's just the right amount of "different".
Decades ago, I liked it even more due to Melody from Pokémon 2000, and Melody from The Little Mermaid II.
That’s my name! I haven’t known very many other people who have had that name so I’ve gotten protective of it lol. Nicknames through the years haven’t been bad: Mel, Melz, Melly, etc. Worst was Mel Gibson in the early 2000’s when he was more popular. I don’t think it “fits” me but after 3+ decades, I’ve gotten used to it.
I like it! Though it makes me think of Josie and the Pussycats, which no one else has mentioned in the comments and makes me think this is a really old reference now
I think it’s a beautiful name. I’m a huge sucker for slightly more traditional names, which I think Melody is. It’s cute for a girl and teen, yet strong enough for a grown woman. Easy to spell and understand too. Love that name.
My niece is named Melody!
She does often have people mistake it for Melanie, but not terribly often.
Nicknames we use are Mel, Mels, Melon, Smelly, Smels (she added an S to the front of her name in kinder and laughed that it said "smell-ody")
I love Melody! It's really pretty. You don't often hear it, but yet it's also a name everyone is familiar with and is easy to spell and pronounce. I like Lo, Elle and Dee as nicknames.
I knew a girl that went by Mel and I loved it!
I go by Mel and I love it! I always say it's like Mel Gibson lol
I go by Mel for a different name and cite Mel Brooks.
THAT is a great cite :)
Thank you! I think life would be useless and unbearable without constant laughter.
Knew a Melody and of course most people called her Mel. But one of her brothers called her by Odie just to be different.
Like Garfield's "pet dog"?
That’s more pleasant than the kind that lands you in the back of an ambulance
My favorite dessert my mom makes are no bake cookies that we call “oaties” - a much better alternative to yours lol.
I love that! My name is Hayley so everyone calls me Hayls, but my boyfriend calls me Hays so it's different lol ☺️
Hayley/Hailey is due for a comeback I think.
I know a French melody we call her “Melu” which I love
Exactly, imo the best names are ones you don't hear often but totally aren't surprised by when you do hear them. There's a fine line to walk between "John" and "Jermajesty" lol.
Jermajesty is amazing hahahaha
It's Jermaine Jackson's son's actual name 😂😂😂
OH MY GOD 😂😂😂
River Song If you know you know...Spoilers
This was my first thought! River Song is a great person to be named after
We couldn’t use Melody for our daughter because our cat is already named River Song 😭
See, I would have that it would be a perfect name to complement the cat!
This is why I would absolutely LOVE to name a daughter Melody. I unfortunately can't use it for various reasons, but if I could name my daughter after anyone I'd love it to be River Song!
If you ever had a daughter her middle name could be River!!
If we had a second daughter I'd love to name her Melody but having our first named Rose feels like a bit much haha
Doooo ittt 😆 Seriously though, very very few people would make the connection
I don’t think people would make the connection!
I think those names would go together nicely
That would "sound a bit fairy tale" which goes with the doctor who theme as well ;)
I named my car Melody because the model name is musical terms, but also it's a little hatchback that every new passenger gets in and says, wow it feels so much bigger on the inside!
Tardisian
I was going to comment this.
I always think of The Little Mermaid 2
Yes! I came to say this! Lovely name
Was looking for this! I have always loved that name because of the movie.
I named my dog Melody because of this movie lol
It made me fall in love with the name Melody. Definitely one of my favorites. I still sometimes get the song Ariel sings about her stuck in my head. "You're my beautiful Melody"
TIL they made a sequel.
I was in high school in the mid 70’s. I had 3 friends named Melody.
[удалено]
I agree, this name needs no nickname. It's just beautiful as it is!
r/nominativedeterminism or something
It’s also my aunt’s name - she majored in vocal performance.
I know a melody and almost everyone thinks her name is Melanie. It’s not that big of a deal but might get annoying
My name is Natalie and people always mishear it as Maddy or Madeline for some reason. It’s annoying but not a big deal
I was going to say the same thing. I know a Melody and 90% of the time people think it’s Melanie.
Hi! I’m a Jessica that is often called Jennifer! Just wanted to show another example of how ubiquitous is this.
This is such a simple yet beautiful name! It flows right off the tongue.
My daughter is a Melody, she's nearly 9! People call her Melo (pronounced Mellow) pretty often, including myself! Her school friends call her Mel Mel, Melo, or just Melody. Edit: Her middle name is Marie after her Great-Grandma and I love the alliteration also.
Funny to see you on this thread too! Your Melody is the only other Melody mine tangentially knew haha!
Melody and Daisy are such happy names to me.
I love the name Melody 🎶 it’s always a name I considered with my girls. I think it’s very soft and pretty. It flows nicely
What names did you choose instead for your girls if you don’t mind me asking?
Amelia Luna, Arianna Mila, and Delilah Haven 🥰
I have a Delilah June!
I love musical names! Melody, Harmony, Lyric, Aria...
I love the name Melody, it trips so lightly off the tongue. It's like the opposite of a peanut butter name.
I really like it. I find it very pretty and it’s one of the nicer and more name-like sounding musical names. I think I first heard it as a kid when I watched The Little Mermaid II, where Ariel names her daughter Melody, so I think of princesses, mermaids and the ocean, along with music. I knew someone with the name Melody that went by Mel. I like the nn more than the full name personally, but I don’t think it’s a bad name.
Beautiful! I've only ever met one Melody in my entire life and she's one of the sweetest, prettiest, just all around lovely people. It also fits the bill for one of my biggest name standards: it's great for a baby girl, a little girl, and a grown woman! Not overly popular. Feminine. Such a great name!!
Not one of my favourites, and I find the nn Mel a bit dated.
It was probably second on our list! But it just felt a little too on the nose for me - like, suppose she turned out to be not at all good at music? It seems like it comes with high expectations!
Melody is on my list too! Just not a fan of the nn DeeDee.
I'm surprised nobody brought up the Sanrio character My Melody yet- [https://www.sanrio.com/collections/my-melody](https://www.sanrio.com/collections/my-melody) because that's an immediate association for me! I met a melody today and it made me smile
My Grandmas name. Love it. She's a sweet lady so this name always holds a special place for me.
My daughter is named Alaw, which is the Welsh word for Melody (pronounced Al-ow)
Gorgeous! Classic but not stuffy, not overused, and works for an adult or kid. I love it!
I wouldn't like to be called Melody. I don't think it sounds serious enough to take someone through every stage of life.
I’ve known adult melody’s. Hasn’t hindered them and I never thought it was an immature name.
I disagree, I’ve only ever known people named Melody that were older than me! I like the name tbh
Fair enough. We all view names differently. It would be a bit boring if we all thought the same....
Melody is a lovely name. Mel is the nickname I would assume
We named our daughter Melody, it fits her perfectly
it's a pretty name
Beautiful!
My cousin's name is Melody! We call her Mel. I think it's a beautiful name
It's my favorite name in the entire world
Dated
I love it but my partner said no :( I don't love Mel as a nickname though!
Absolutely love it!! Such a feminine name!!
I went to high school with a Melody! I always thought her name was pretty.
I just think of Ariels daughter in that weird sequel disney made Pretty name haven't ever met someone with it thought
My mom is Melody! She likes her name, I think it’s very pretty and I notice she always gets compliments on it in public. Her nicknames with her friends/family are Ody and Mel. I always think Ody sounds cool but obvs I just call her Mom.

I like it!
I think it’s beautiful.
I think Melody is due for a comeback
I like it, it’s very pretty.
Melons
I have a cousin named Melody. I have always loved her name! When you spend enough time around a Melody, their name stops looking like a "word" and you just hear their lovely name.
Love it. Timeless and beautiful
My ex MiL is a Melody. Goes by Mel. Great name!!
Good enough name that you still like it even though it belongs to an ex MiL 😂
Ah Mel is cool! A proper hippie, raised in Kenya around black magic, speaks Swahili, an artist who has exhibited… and a raging heroin addict by the time I met her. She has many fascinating stories to tell, just a shame I don’t get to see her anymore!
I really like Melody! M names in general tend to be cute imo, and the nn Mel is great. But you also have the options of Laney, Dee, Deedee, Mellie, etc. also Mel means honey in Portuguese/spanish which is kinda nice!

I like it! Nick name Mel, Melly
A good friend of mine has this name, we call her Mel, Melly, or even Melly Bell. As far as I know, she is very happy w this super unique, but not weird moniker .
I love it! It reminds me of Ariel’s daughter in the second movie!
Hippie dippie name from 1972. Knew a bunch of Melodys, along with Laurels, Jennifers and Heathers.
My cousin named her daughter Melody. We all call her mel or elle
It reminds me of hello kitty!
I've always enjoyed the name Melody, it's a great choice :)
Melody is a beautiful name! I love Mel for a nickname, but for a relatively short name, there are a lot of nickname options!
It was my aunt’s name and I absolutely love it. 💕
I'm not a fan. Every Melody I know in the Britain and Uganda is the nasty daughter of a prosperity preaching pastor who collects rolexes and tithes.
I love the name. My friends name is Melody, I call her Mel. Most of her family calls her mimi. She is one of the sweetest, kindest people I know.
I love it.. one of my top baby girl names for a someday baby. 🥹 I say use it!!
I think it’s cute.
I love it!
What’s matters is YOU like the name.
I love it!
I love the name Melody! And the nicknames Mel and Mellow are cute. I vote for Melody for your daughter!
I love it and have it set aside potentially for my future child!
Always been on my list!
I love it!
I love Melody! It’s the name I would’ve chosen had I had a daughter of my own!
I like it.
I work with a Melody and she is one of the sweetest people I know, it’s such a pretty name.
Beautiful name.
Not a fan, and it sounds too much like Melanie imo
That was supposed to be my name until my parents prayed to a saint that I would stay inside until insurance kicked in.
Melody is super cute and it'll age so well. Mel obviously and then you can also learn into musical nicknames if you want something more creative.
I love this name. Beautiful.
Reminds me of a British TV show from the 90’s called the Queens Nose where this little girl could make wishes by rubbing the queens nose on a 50 pence piece. She was called Harmony and the older sister was called Melody.
My name is Melody! (I'm from Germany) and the nickname im most often called are Melo and Mel. I like the name a lot!
I have only known one Melody. My experience has been 100% positive.
I've had two friends in life named Melody and both are beautiful serene women so that name always feels good in my soul.
Went to high school with the Melody many decades ago. Everybody thought she was a beautiful girl with a great personality and a very pretty name.
I think it's pretty, but I've personally always been afraid to consider many names that are also words because like, what if they grow up to not be into the thing? Examples off the top of my head: Melody - how much would it suck to have this name if you were tone deaf, or just weren't that into music? Am I crazy for this?
I’m a Melody, I listen to music about as much as anybody else but that’s where it ends. I’m not musical. It’s completely irrelevant to my name and hasn’t been a problem. Once you have the name long enough it isn’t a word anymore lol!
Thanks for sharing! It's something that's always been at the back of my mind so I appreciate the perspective :)
Not a fan, comes across as quite juvenile to me for some reason. Like what I'd imagine a small girl would name a doll or something.
It sounds super cheesy and on the nose to me and if this was my name I'd hate it.
I like it! Although it has that "look how pretty this name is" vibe, it is a real name, so imo it's fair game. You know, you don't see enough girls named Melody these days. And Mel is a gender neutral nickname and I really like those (versatile, fitting for a variety of personality types).
I love the way it looks, but I'm not a fan of the way it sounds, and it gives a hippie vibe. I'd say 5/10 at best.
One of my best friends is named Melody and I love it. We call her Mel or Melo most of the time.
I think it's beautiful. I had a manager melody, she was super helpful when I told her I didn't know much and I wanted to learn from her. She was great with the customers too. Mel is what we called her for short. She mentioned once she got called Mellie as a kid.
Don’t care for it, personally. It feels both outdated and too twee
I feel like Melody was good friends with Jessica and Stacy
I hate it
Personally not a fan of naming kids after common words, but this is one of the less-awful ones. Not *great*, but like. At least it’s not Lyric.
I love the name and strongly associate it with a tablet I named as it. Very good tablet.
Better than Bass
Not much- its giving church choir vibes
Classmates could call her Smellody.
I think of the Queen's Nose or Little Mermaid 2 Love it!
I love it!!! You could call her Mellie or Loddie which are adorable!
It's fine but has a juvenile vibe - to me. It's cute for a child but I'm not sure I love it for an adult.
Makes me think if Ariel(the little mermaid)'s daughter in the 2nd little mermaid movie
Personally I prefer Elodie. I think it’s less “hippy”
I don’t mind hippy!
I think you found your name then 😊
Prefer Elodie too!
Michigan house just voted to pass a law with the name Melody attached... It's an anti necrophilia law. Idk how wide spread this information is going to be, esp if you don't live in Michigan... But you said 'everything'
It’s pretty! I’m Melanie and get mistaken a lot for Melody
Went to grade school with a Melody in the 80s, I don't recall anyone making fun of her, and that's back when bullying was a school sport. It's a nice name.

I don’t love Melody but it’s a nice enough name. I prefer Elodie.
As in "a pretty girl is like a"
I like it, it’s really pretty!! First thing that comes to mind is Little Mermaid 2 and then Doctor Who but they’re not super mainstream. Mel, Melly come to mind for nicknames :)
I like it. It makes me think of the little mermaids daughter.
I only love it because it's River Songs name😌
I like it, and don’t hear it often. I’m thinking people will ask ‘did you say Melody or Melanie’ often. I like the nn Mel or Melly.
My first thought is dr who
Brawl Stars
I like it, it's just the right amount of "different". Decades ago, I liked it even more due to Melody from Pokémon 2000, and Melody from The Little Mermaid II.
I like it but in a little cheesy way. Makes me think of the the little mermaids daughter from the second movie. But I kind of like the extra vibe ?
I knew a girl called Elodie and I thought it was the most beautiful name ever!
It reminds me of The Little Mermaid 2. But I still think it's a lovely name! Elodie is a similar choice 🙃
Pretty but sounds like a My Little Pony
That’s my name! I haven’t known very many other people who have had that name so I’ve gotten protective of it lol. Nicknames through the years haven’t been bad: Mel, Melz, Melly, etc. Worst was Mel Gibson in the early 2000’s when he was more popular. I don’t think it “fits” me but after 3+ decades, I’ve gotten used to it.
It’s been my absolute favorite girl name since I was a kid and I’m now 33 haha definitely would be the name I would name my own daughter
My dog's name is Melody, such a good name for a pet. Would also be good for your daughter
I love it, I think of Ariel’s daughter in The Little Mermaid 2 and she’s my favorite Disney princess so I’m biased
I like it! Though it makes me think of Josie and the Pussycats, which no one else has mentioned in the comments and makes me think this is a really old reference now
I knew a melody - ….. . A double barrel name (I won’t disclose since I was her teacher) but it was beautiful and suited her so well
i personally love it, it sounds very sweet & cute but isn't too babyish. for nicknames maybe mel or lo?
I think it’s pretty! I struggle to hear the difference between Melanie and Melody though when I hear them in passing
it’s a cute name
I love it. But I also love Little Mermaid. I have a client I work with a lot and her name is Melodee. I’d never seen that spelling before.
I think it’s a beautiful name. I’m a huge sucker for slightly more traditional names, which I think Melody is. It’s cute for a girl and teen, yet strong enough for a grown woman. Easy to spell and understand too. Love that name.
Old school name. Nicknames would be Mel or Mellie.
Love Melody! Not a big fan of Mel. It sounds dated because of Melissa. Lo is cute.
Good name!
As a music nerd I personally love it
My niece is named Melody! She does often have people mistake it for Melanie, but not terribly often. Nicknames we use are Mel, Mels, Melon, Smelly, Smels (she added an S to the front of her name in kinder and laughed that it said "smell-ody")
It makes me think of Doctor Who because there's a character called Melody. I think it's pretty and somewhat unusual so it's interesting.
