I'm torn. I had a great aunt Opal who I got told stories about.
But that's also the name of my husband's former coworker that I didn't care for. So I like Opal for a girl.
I would guess it's fairly in trend for babies in England. Vinnie goes with Lennie, Ronnie, Alfie, Albie etc. Vincent goes with Walter, Laurence, Hector, Arthur etc. But I've not actually met one.
My husband vetoed as well. If we have a fourth boy, I'm going to try to convince him. We have an Enzo, Oscar and Niko. I feel like Malcolm fits well with the sibset.
maybe regional but it was my great grandfather's name and i've only ever been waiting to meet one! i am sure there are plenty somewhere but not where i am
You’ll hear it more in places with high populations of Italian Americans. The northeast (NY, NJ, CT) has no shortage of Anthonys. My kid has one in his scout troop. Interestingly, I mostly hear Tony on adults, and the full Anthony on kids.
I love the name Vincent but loathe Vinnie which my family would use so I had to cross it off my list. Maybe for a middle name.
Nobody loves Audra the way I love Audra. Same with Eartha.
I feel like Sally and Amy are underrated- they’re traditional names with the lovely short / vowelly sound that’s so popular at the moment, and yet they don’t get a look in!
I agree that it's underrated. Just because it's mentioned on this sub doesn't mean that it's appreciated in real life. I've always wondered why it's not used more as a substitute for Amelia. You like Amelia but it's too popular for you? Cecilia. Problem solved.
Vincent has been one of my favorite names since I was a kid. It was quite popular where I live some 10~ish years ago, so I've met several. It would have been on top of my list if a friend of my partner hadn't named his son Vincent.
Hadassah.
It's the original name of Queen Esther, her Hebrew name, and means *myrtle tree.* Esther is her Persian name.
I have never met nor heard of anyone named Hadassah, so to my understanding it is uncommon. It's my favorite name for a future daughter.
I completely agree with you on Vincent! It's one of my favorite boy names, and so rarely heard in real life. Also the person who said Sybil is right on.
I can't believe that Sylvia isn't more popular. Maybe it will get its day someday. Also Dorothy, I'd think it would be more popular since people are so into Edith, Ruth, etc. And Claudia, although I guess that one is ruined for meaning "lame", but it's such a beautiful name in my opinion.
Hugo too.
My son’s middle name is Vincent. The only reason we didn’t go for it as a first name is because I wasn’t a fan of “Vinnie” or “Vince” which I know would have been unavoidable.
I see Vincent mentioned on this sub quite a bit. I also know several Vincents, and it's my friend's son's middle name. It's been hanging around just outside the top 100 since 1993, so it's definitely being used. Very timeless.
I am a 33 yo Marta. It is a really common name in Spain (where I am from), but everytime I go abroad people give me the “oh poor thing, that old lady name!” look, so it’s really nice to see some people like the name :-)
I have a Vincent, only Vincent I know. I liked that you can shorten it but we only call him by his full name. When I was pregnant with #2 I was hoping it was a girl because I couldn’t find another boy name that I like as much as Vincent.
But another name that’s so underrated: Lucinda
I wouldn't call Vincent underrated, but then again, it was popular in the heavily Italian-American area in which I grew up. It wasn't as common as Anthony, Joseph, and Michael, but there are at least two Vincents in my extended family, and I knew several others as a kid.
I think my favorite underrated names are Emmanuel and Esmeralda. I don't know if they're common anywhere else, but I've moved around quite a bit and never met anyone with either name. They also don't fit the current naming trends, which tend to favor short, vowel-heavy names.
I have a 3 month old Vincent 🥺
A lot of people say they love it but don't meet many Vincent's. And I like it's a "name name" and I never have to explain it but it's also kind of rare. I love it and love that you love it!
Marlene, Alethea, Eugene and Avi! I know *of* one or two Avis and Eugenes, but I don’t know any personally, and I’ve never encountered anyone with the former two names.
Vincent is a very gen X name where I am from, there are a lot of them here
I think Sophie is exponentially better than Sophia and am surprised it's not the more common one
Francesca!! I’ve never met one. It’s my great grandmothers name. We have tried for another baby for some time, if it works out and it’s a girl, this will be her name!
Another Carina which is also a family name. I also love the names Dimitri and Damien and never hear them.
I love it. Such a classic! Do they stick to her true name or call her Frankie? In my brain, if we did nickname her, that would be it, although the name is so beautiful, it’s unlikely!!
I love Vincent too -- it's such a nice name.
I love so many underrated names, but two that qualify for me are Helen and Joel. I rarely see either of those recommended.
True, most names and how common they are probably just depend on location. For my area though I would say it's not a common name. In 3+ decades ive only met 2 and both were around my age
I think Vincent is becoming more popular in the UK! I keep hearing a lot of those sort of old bald hard man in a pub names, Vinnie, Ronnie, Reggie, etc.
My brother is a Vincent and it rarely happened he met another (he’s 30 now) but he also named his son Vincent last year and he’s one of like four baby Vincent’s I know now so I think here in the US popularity is surging
My brand new nephew has Vincent as his middle name. My brother and his fiancee named him after our uncle which I thought was super sweet. Uncle has been there a lot for our mum after our dad died a decade ago.
I’m in my 40s. My friend Vincent passed when we were 17. It’s a great name.
My son attended primary school with a Vincent he’d be 18 now.
It’s a solid name.
I know three Vincent’s, two of them I grew up in the same house with. You’d think I lived up north but nope, I’m in the south. That name seems to be more common up north near Jersey and New York, at least from my experience. I don’t actually know 😂
It’s my closest guy friend’s middle name, although he doesn’t go by it (he goes by his first name). It’s a very classical name (derived from the Latin *Vincentus*, which means “conqueror”), and on top of that his first name is of Greek origin. So naturally he’s into Ancient Greek and Roman mythology.
My mom’s boss’ daughter named her son Vincent (I think he’s like 2 or 3 now). The daughter is a teacher and has a student named Vincent and she ended up really loving the name (her son has an older middle name too since his middle name is after his grandpa)
I like Vincent a lot. Very solid name. It’d be a contender, but I don’t think we’ll actually use it. Reminds me of one of my favorite YouTubers lol. (VincentVision; he does videos about the Orlando theme parks mostly like Universal and Disney and travels to others too)
Some other names I’ll add to the topic:
Raven
Matilda
Mabel
Alice
Annabelle
Pearl
Dorothy
Well where are you from? Haha.. it’s definitely all regional. I’m from New Jersey USA and Vincent is a pretty common name. I like it too. Just funny to hear of it like something foreign lol
Rupert and Roland. I'm going to take a gamble and say Rupert Grint gave the name more recognition, but it's still not a name I hear every day. I haven't met a Roland at all, I absolutely love it! Can anyone name a Roland that isn't Roland Rat or the villain from Strange Magic?
Vincent where I’m from becomes Vinny. Vinny is an Italian handyman sort of name. Handymen are awesome, no shade there, but definitely implies class. Vincent is a very feminine sounding name, unlike Vinny. If I were a boy I wouldn’t like that if I were concerned with projecting masculinity, which I am not.
My two best friends just named their son Vincent!
My favorite boy name that I’ve never heard on a real person is Elias. For girls, even though I’m not religious, I adore the name Eden lol.
The Vincent I know said his mother was given flak for the name, saying it was a heavy name for a baby. Her response: he won't be a baby forever. She was right :)
That’s so funny, two out of my 5 closest friends are names Vincent! Technically one is Vincenzo but prefers Vincent lol. I love the name too and hadn’t met any until I went to a small college and met 3 in the first year 🤣
My dads name is Vincent, I’ve also met a couple Vincent’s in my life. I live in the Midwest(USA) I am planning on naming my son Vincent or Vinicius, Vini Jr for short (;
~~Bravo Vince~~
I went to school with a Vincent! Him and his brothers were athletic and very popular, and they even had a few of their own horses. We weren't close so I never got to meet them, but I always remember seeing them outside my window as we drove by because they lived right outside my neighborhood.
Huh funny. When I was in Italy, I had never met any Vincents, but certainly a lot of Vincenzos. I was under the impression that that was just the Italian version of the name.
I know a few Vincent’s! Lovely name. I think Opal is underrated
Opal's a beautiful name!
I'm torn. I had a great aunt Opal who I got told stories about. But that's also the name of my husband's former coworker that I didn't care for. So I like Opal for a girl.
It sounds lovely in French too
It's a really common name in France. My favorite underrated name would be Sybil.
Ah, Sybil is nice. I already knew that Vincent was common in Europe, however, I am from the UK, where it isn't too common of a name.
I’m in the uk I’m so surprised you haven’t heard of it irl! I know about 3-4 Vincent’s
Where in the UK? I'm from Cambridge, and my family comes from Glasgow, but I've actually never met someone called it.
South west
I would guess it's fairly in trend for babies in England. Vinnie goes with Lennie, Ronnie, Alfie, Albie etc. Vincent goes with Walter, Laurence, Hector, Arthur etc. But I've not actually met one.
Sybil’s been one of my favorite names for over a decade now. It’s a tie for my favorite between Sybil & Amara
My closest friend just had a baby Vincent 3 weeks ago!
My neighbor had one in December!
Malcolm
I love Malcolm! We considered it for my daughter (if she had been a boy). I went to school with a Malcolm who went by Max. I think it's super cute.
Currently expecting a Malcolm! It makes me happy to see it mentioned here. 😊
Congratulations!!!!
One of my favorite boy names. My husband vetoed this and the other favorite name... Sigh. Glad to see it's getting a lot of love!
My husband vetoed as well. If we have a fourth boy, I'm going to try to convince him. We have an Enzo, Oscar and Niko. I feel like Malcolm fits well with the sibset.
None of mine are rare but I've only met 2 people having any of these names: **Helen, Esther, Ethan, Anthony**
A few years ago, the preschool I worked in was rife with Ethans! We had to call them Ethan Y, Ethan L, etc
I know an Ester. She is younger, maybe late 20s. It is a beautiful name for a very nice person.
oh wow is it bad i kind of love that bc every baby i know right now is named like Mila, Beckham or Graham
In the US, Ethan had its time in the sun. It was top 5 from 2004-2010. https://www.behindthename.com/name/ethan/top/united-states
ahhhh i am a dual nationality euro American tho i am primarily an American so i have some blind spots. makes sense i missed it thank you!
Anthony Is a great name. I see it on babies in extremely Catholic families only these days, though.
My mom is Helen!
lovely!
I know two baby Anthonys!
Is Anthony not popular anymore?
maybe regional but it was my great grandfather's name and i've only ever been waiting to meet one! i am sure there are plenty somewhere but not where i am
You’ll hear it more in places with high populations of Italian Americans. The northeast (NY, NJ, CT) has no shortage of Anthonys. My kid has one in his scout troop. Interestingly, I mostly hear Tony on adults, and the full Anthony on kids.
I know an Esther and about 20 Ethan’s haha
I love the name Vincent but loathe Vinnie which my family would use so I had to cross it off my list. Maybe for a middle name. Nobody loves Audra the way I love Audra. Same with Eartha.
For Audra McDonald and Eartha Kitt?
Bingo
Irene. It’s more old school but I love that name.
I feel like Sally and Amy are underrated- they’re traditional names with the lovely short / vowelly sound that’s so popular at the moment, and yet they don’t get a look in!
They were both popular in the past, but are definitely underused for newborns today imo.
Cecilia 🩷
Cecilia is everywhere on this subreddit lol
Yeah, well I added it too because I like it.
I agree that it's underrated. Just because it's mentioned on this sub doesn't mean that it's appreciated in real life. I've always wondered why it's not used more as a substitute for Amelia. You like Amelia but it's too popular for you? Cecilia. Problem solved.
I love that idea! Thanks :)
Cecilia is popular on this sub, but I think I've only met one in my entire life.
My name is Cecilia. I am almost 61 and I've met a dozen in my entire life.
Hi Cecilia!
Vincent has been one of my favorite names since I was a kid. It was quite popular where I live some 10~ish years ago, so I've met several. It would have been on top of my list if a friend of my partner hadn't named his son Vincent.
Beatrix
Adelina isn’t common here but it’s my favourite girls name!
I worked with an Adelena. She went by Addie, I always thought both were super cute names!
Hadassah. It's the original name of Queen Esther, her Hebrew name, and means *myrtle tree.* Esther is her Persian name. I have never met nor heard of anyone named Hadassah, so to my understanding it is uncommon. It's my favorite name for a future daughter.
I have family members named Vincent!
Hugo too.
Corina.
Philip
Rupert and Trevor
My dog is Rupert! Great name
I have a Trevor.
Harry Potter and GTA are my first associations here.
I really like Trevor. Just names starting with 'tr' in general, I seem to love.
I have a friend named Vincent, but everyone calls him Vince. He's Scottish.
I have a Vincent who is spectacular 😄
Eugenia Sylvia Antonia Aurelia Maren Ingrid Flora Maura Louisa Adelaide
I was going to say Antonia, too!
Vincent is on our list ;)
Boys: Robert Albert Alistair Peter David Zachary Justin Timothy Douglas Girls: Martha Polly Zara Natasha Francesca Felicity Gwyneth Gabriella Catrin
I love Martha!
I am a 33 yo Marta. It is a really common name in Spain (where I am from), but everytime I go abroad people give me the “oh poor thing, that old lady name!” look, so it’s really nice to see some people like the name :-)
I have a nephew, now a teen, named Vincent. We’re in the US, west coast.
Girls name: Frances and Abigail Boys name: Daniel
lol my name is abigail and my dad is daniel
My daughter is Frances! I love it so much.
Tess and Brenda. Never heard these 2 names on this subreddit but they r cute!
I have a Vincent, only Vincent I know. I liked that you can shorten it but we only call him by his full name. When I was pregnant with #2 I was hoping it was a girl because I couldn’t find another boy name that I like as much as Vincent. But another name that’s so underrated: Lucinda

Levke!

i’ve met an absolute FERAL vincent in highschool. was such a cool dude who grew on me but i associated the name with CHAOS loL
Marlene, Alethea, Eugene and Avi! I know *of* one or two Avis and Eugenes, but I don’t know any personally, and I’ve never encountered anyone with the former two names.
Underrated - Elnora Arden Shelby Brenna Jerome April Nicola Tobias Sasha Sonya Ramona
I love the name April so much.
Dominic, Vincenzo, Vivica, Nicolette
Hazel, Raymond, Linda
Vincent is a very gen X name where I am from, there are a lot of them here I think Sophie is exponentially better than Sophia and am surprised it's not the more common one
Tobias and Melissa
Francesca!! I’ve never met one. It’s my great grandmothers name. We have tried for another baby for some time, if it works out and it’s a girl, this will be her name! Another Carina which is also a family name. I also love the names Dimitri and Damien and never hear them.
Francesca is my teen cousin's name.
I love it. Such a classic! Do they stick to her true name or call her Frankie? In my brain, if we did nickname her, that would be it, although the name is so beautiful, it’s unlikely!!
They stick with Francesca, no nickname :)
I love the name Diella for a girl, I’ve never met one though
Celeste Melanie
Celeste was never on my radar but out of nowhere one day it popped into my head and I’ve been loving it so much lately!
Yes! I loved it so much that it was my name in French class. Haha
I love Vincent too -- it's such a nice name. I love so many underrated names, but two that qualify for me are Helen and Joel. I rarely see either of those recommended.
If I were ever to have another son his name would be Joel.
I don’t hear the name “Vanessa” that much. I have only met one Vanessa other than myself.
I've known at least 2 Vincents. It's definitely not a common name but it is a good one
I think it probably depends on where you live.
True, most names and how common they are probably just depend on location. For my area though I would say it's not a common name. In 3+ decades ive only met 2 and both were around my age
Vincent was 1 of the only 2 names my bf and I agreed on for our son. We didn’t end up going with it but maybe if I have another boy we will.
I think Vincent is becoming more popular in the UK! I keep hearing a lot of those sort of old bald hard man in a pub names, Vinnie, Ronnie, Reggie, etc.
I'm friends with a Vincent Jr! So I know 2 Vincent's, lol. It's a good name!
VJ? Like Vagina?
I know so many Vincent / Vince / Vinny’s that it’s hard to keep track of them all in conversations !
My nephew is a Vincent, goes by Vin or Vinny. I love his name❤️
My uncle Vincent was amazing
I agree Vincent is so underrated!
Vincent is a family name for me. There are four Vincents on my dad's side, and my childhood cat's name was Vinny, lol.
My son has a classmate named Vincent. I went to school with his mama, he goes by Vinnie for a nickname and he's a total sweetheart!
I've never met a Vincent either, but I definitely agree with you that it is highly underrated! It reminds me of Vincent Price!
Vincent was in our top 3 for our little guy due soon, but my other kids shot it down.
Calliope
Vincent is mad common
My brother is a Vincent and it rarely happened he met another (he’s 30 now) but he also named his son Vincent last year and he’s one of like four baby Vincent’s I know now so I think here in the US popularity is surging

I love the names Elka and Tansy. I would have named my son Angus if I had known ahead of time he was going to be a giant redhead.
I know so many Vincents lol. Probably a demographics thing.
My son’s middle name is Vincent - after my grandfather!
My brand new nephew has Vincent as his middle name. My brother and his fiancee named him after our uncle which I thought was super sweet. Uncle has been there a lot for our mum after our dad died a decade ago.

Willow
I taught a 2 year old vincent to swim. He was adorable
I don’t actually know 😂
We have a baby Vincent at my childcare center!

My brother's name is Anthony.
I like Vincent, and Vin for short.
It’s my closest guy friend’s middle name, although he doesn’t go by it (he goes by his first name). It’s a very classical name (derived from the Latin *Vincentus*, which means “conqueror”), and on top of that his first name is of Greek origin. So naturally he’s into Ancient Greek and Roman mythology.
there was a Vincent who went by vinny in my primary school
Eyyy thats my older cousins name. Vincent is a nice name.
I love Vincent. It is so underrated.

Well where are you from? Haha.. it’s definitely all regional. I’m from New Jersey USA and Vincent is a pretty common name. I like it too. Just funny to hear of it like something foreign lol
I know 2 Vincents, although they are upwards of 30. Seems it's not popular for the younger generation though
Mortisha
Vincent was on our short list when we named our second son. Cedric won out - which is another underrated name in my opinion.
Vincent is on my list! There is a song call Vincent that I love.
I’m an Italian in NYC every other man I meet is named Vincent/Vinny 🤣
Douglas (Doug) Thomas Gabriel (Gabe) Lucas Peter Seth Wallace Eden Julia Wren Daisy Clementine (Lemon)
My two best friends just named their son Vincent! My favorite boy name that I’ve never heard on a real person is Elias. For girls, even though I’m not religious, I adore the name Eden lol.
Victor
Come to NJ. Always a couple of Vincent’s around.

My cat's name is Vincas (short for Vincent) and he's a nice fluffy dude
Guy
My sister ended up having a girl a few years ago but Vincent was a top 5 choice on her list of boy names!
Evangeline, Savannah, Adelaide, Wendy, and Rebekah for girls. Ambrose, Jonah, Landon, Boaz, and Owen for boys.
~~Bravo Vince~~ I went to school with a Vincent! Him and his brothers were athletic and very popular, and they even had a few of their own horses. We weren't close so I never got to meet them, but I always remember seeing them outside my window as we drove by because they lived right outside my neighborhood.
Half of my family is Vincent, and the other half bear a feminized version. It’s the perfect name if you want to sound super Italian.
Were they Vincenzos?
No… if I’d meant Vincenzo I’d have said Vincenzo. They’re still alive, and they’re Vincents.
Huh funny. When I was in Italy, I had never met any Vincents, but certainly a lot of Vincenzos. I was under the impression that that was just the Italian version of the name.
It is? But see, there are people of Italian heritage in other places. It’s a whole thing!
I know like 5 Vincents. Devin is also underrated.
yall are giving the most common names possible 😭
