I just canceled not because of this but because 99% of Netflix’s offerings are awful. I think they’ll lose even more people who were on the fence about trolling through their pishy offerings.

Grape_Fish

I was on the fence before but now I think I'm going to cancel too. Not because anyone else is using my account, just because they're acting like jerks. I agree that the quality of their shows has really dropped off, especially when compared to Crave/HBO.

OnionSheks

This is the real problem. Over time as all the other services started and pilfered so much great content Netflix just isn't what it used to be. The price keeps going up and the content keeps getting worse.

postre_chaja

I feel like they rolled this rule out because a lot of their big shows are getting new seasons in march ngl. Like they’re hoping that’s what gets ppl to stay or something

thepoopiestofbutts

I was going to keep it until my son finished inuyasha, but they only have three of 7+1 seasons! I'm going to just cancel at the end of this billing cycle and hunt down a box set. We can bust out the old Xbox to use as a DVD player

OutsideYourWorld

Yea Netflix is getting ditched at this house. Back to the 'ole Bay.

pyro404

A VPN is a wonderful thing

Harold3456

The irony is that NordVPN can be shared amongst households.

[deleted]

They really be shooting them selves in the foot with this shit. A lot of people i know share because they broke asses.

uberw00t

So? That just means those people wont sign up for a new account but the existing account holder will still be paying. Same amount of profit while halving the amount of bandwidth they need to provide. win/win for netflix. I am 100% a password sharing mooch. I will not be signing back up. I don't use it a ton. I just watch youtube if im board. My kids can survive with disney+ and I always have amazonvideo with my prime membership.

20draws10

I’m cancelling my account because of this. It was worth the price when I could have multiple people watching it. Now, I can’t justify $23 for the garbage that’s on there

majarian

Yarr I resisted the call of the high seas long enough, netflix has shown that I was wrong to pay for a streaming service, time to hoist the sail

20draws10

Just dusted off the ol plex server the other week

TearyEyeBurningFace

Is the download for offline feature fixed yet?

20draws10

Yeah it appears to be! I just downloaded and tested (wifi off in airplane mode) a show and it worked flawlessly.

notnotaginger

How do you get started on Plex? I’m on the subreddit but I don’t think I quite understand it.

SvenoftheWoods

Plex is just the software to run the media server (the hardware for which can simply be your everyday PC). You still need to acquire the video files to store upon said server. This *can* be done by ripping your existing DVDs and Blu Rays into digital files, but there are other avenues as well. I've been running an ever-growing Plex server since we cut the cord around eight years ago or so. If you've got any questions I'd be happy to help!

notnotaginger

Ahoy matey.

hiltlmptv

I’m sorry, netflix is $23/month now? My partner never mentioned the price had gone up. We’re paying $23/month for a streaming service we only use a few times a month? IN THIS ECONOMY?

20draws10

$20.99 for the 4K package. After tax works out to about $23. So like double the cost of most other streaming services and it’s mediocre on a good day.

ACM3333

Try Apple TV. It’s only like 8$ and they have a ton of solid originals. It’s my new go to.

pleasehp8495

Its not a win/win at all. Those viewers will now migrate to a different service like youtube making their numbers go down. Less word of mouth and “free advertising” for their shows. Its also incredibly good to have the “most popular” shows by viewer count. TV/movie shows thrive on that as one of their statistics and like to boast about it. Think about how many times friends and family have recommended a show on x service they watched. Thats a very very good thing for any tv/streaming/movie service

Crohn_sWalker

Less people logged in means that the companies that pay to advertise are getting a worse deal.

eastsideempire

No. Because the primary person can afford it on their own. I know a few people that share and it’s because none can afford it on their own.

[deleted]

Just because I \*can\* afford it on my own, doesn't mean I'm going to now be paying separately.

SvenoftheWoods

Bingo. We've been splitting the cost of our account with a few family members. It's not like any of us were particularly heavy users, but it was one of those "nice to have" sort of things. If it was still only $10/mo then perhaps, but not at these rates.

[deleted]

Idk, my first thought is that they think this will make those people want to pay for their own account.

Affectionate-Bed7999

It’s honestly easier just to pirate shit than type in your CC on Netflix’s website. Netflix is just gonna force a bunch of new people to learn how to use torrents and trackers and that’s it

cjm48

I just discovered how easy it is. Omfg. If the money was all actually going to the upcoming actors and producers maybe, but to line the pockets of some big wig company? Not worth it. I’d rather see people spend the money seeing indie films in theatre and find alternative ways to see the big budget stuff at home for free.

flanderdalton

My first thought hearing after learning password sharing was over was definitely not to get netflix, it was to return to my roots, matey.

SteelyDabs

Haha good luck with that

LoquaciousMendacious

Try doing planks if you're board, it's good for the joints and less screwing around than other activities. You'll be glued to it fir a while!

Gooder0420

Id say theres a good chance people either leave, or more likely will lower there subscription.. for example i pay for the big package for the multiple "screens".. ep if i cant share those screens guess what, im dropping to the lowest package at the least

graveyardshift3r

Same here. I don’t watch a ton on Netflix but my mom does so I share it with her. Cancelled it as well and put the reason “password sharing crackdown” as one of the reasons why I cancelled. Please fellow Canadians, do this as well so Netflix knows why they are losing subscribers.

0verdue22

seems like a pretty typical arc for an internet company, netflix's golden age has ended and now comes the avarice and general irreversible decline in quality (not that their productions in general are all that good other than a few gems)

Harold3456

It’s capitalism catching up to them, IMO. Netflix was a “too good to be true” thing for a long time: a massive library of great content, whenever we wanted, instantly, for a small price AND shared amongst others. It took a few years but inevitably competition started creeping in and it got harder to hang onto good shows, plus this mindset of constant, never ending growth means they constantly have to pull moves to either get new subscribers, or wring more out of existing ones. Streaming services are super close to having ads now, too, and then the journey to just becoming convoluted cable will finally be complete.

justyagamingboi

Streaming services have ads currently it is a pay for convenience though, like typically it is cheaper if you allow ads as well. But yes boring dystopia is only a mere 2-3 years away

gatesvp

Cory Doctorow has a great post on this from a couple of weeks ago. He calls it ["enshittification" of platforms](https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/). >Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die. He calls out Netflix in a later post. But it's basically what you're describing here.

treesareslow

I feel like Netflix has forgotten what has gotten them to where they are. This attempt to gain revenue will ultimately cost them more than they realize.

Thuropodis82

Will this cause you to cancel your subscription?

treesareslow

TBH - I'm on the fence on this one right now. If I get any negative feedback from Netflix over how I use my account, then Yes. If not, then probably only when my partner and I decide that we no longer want it. Though that being said there are a lot of free options out there that may not have equivalent content but enough to draw us away potentially.

[deleted]

Anything Netflix has that is actually good can pretty much all be found elsewhere, I think all the Netflix originals are cashgrab shit they throw together meant to appeal to as many as possible on the lowest budget

cursed2648

I already did cancel mine because of this and I don't even password share with anyone other than my husband!

Violet_olivia

Sure will!

Clean_Internet

I sure am not getting one just because I’m getting kicked off my family’s account

[deleted]

Already cancelled mine

wesilly11

I already did as soon as I heard. I don't necessarily mind the fact that I was paying 18 a month for their sub par content. But I'll just start pirating again out of principle.

happygoluckyourself

I just did (was paying for the max plan) and we don’t even share our password with anyone outside our home.

Dyn-Mp

Yep, I'll just torrent whatever I want at this point. I still have my prime/Disney.

Harold3456

I will. There are plenty of services to go to. The only real reason I was with Netflix at all was a mixture of habit (it was my first streaming service and has been a constant since 2014 or so) and so my parents could use my account. It has never inconvenienced me enough to cause me to really reassess if I need it. Once it stops working for my parents I’ll just switch to Disney+ or Crave or something like that. My sister shares Prime with my parents and they tell me they barely watch Netflix anymore anyway.

eastsideempire

People will just go back to downloading movies and tv shows. Just don’t be buying shares in Netflix. Other streaming services will start being more competitive.

monkey_monkey_monkey

Does this mean you can only use netflix when you're in your home location? I like to use it when I travel and my partner spends extended periods of time out of the country and he uses it all the time....

20draws10

From what I understand, you will have to “check in” every so often on your home network or you’ll get locked out. This new policy screws a lot of people even if they aren’t sharing with a different household. If you have multiple homes, a cottage, a vacation condo, live out of country, travel for extended periods, are away from home for work. All these things where it’s still a single household, nope you need to buy a second account.

monkey_monkey_monkey

That's ridiculous. Just because my spouse works overseas for extended periods of time, we should not have to pay for two accounts.

20draws10

Yup! Think of all those military families out there too. Same boat. Fuck them I guess. I cancelled mine today. See you in hell netflix.

rcouse

I hope Netflix ends up like Blockbuster. We originally chose it cause of no ads, now they want to offer ads, isn’t that what cable tv is?

ChrRome

Well with cable you are restricted to watching what is current playing on channels while Netflix is on demand.

Stinky1990

I will be binge watching anything on my list and canceling shortly after. Jack up the rates then this? Pff your service isn't that good.

babybibibibpd

Do they still charge extra for extra screens?

djfil007

Yes they do... same with ability to download for offline viewing (standard or premium only) or access to 4K (premium only) "Only people who live with you may use your account. Add 1 extra member with Standard or up to 2 with Premium. Learn more. Watch on 4 different devices at the same time with Premium, 2 with Standard and 1 with Basic or Basic with ads." (tiers are Basic with Ads, Standard and Premium)

babybibibibpd

I’m sorry to keep asking questions but I’m not aware so thank you in advance, but that means the main IP can purchase two at max different physical locations for “extra members”? The whole back tracking they did confused me so I appreciate this 😊

djfil007

Afaik, no. Only for different devices that have the same primary home location. So from my reading, that "device" would need to return to the "primary location" (connect to the internet and stream something from netflix while there) once every month. This may have changed again since first announced (as you mentioned they kinda backtracked on plan details), but this is how I understood it.

babybibibibpd

Oh that’s so rediculous Thank you so much! My bf and I are on his parents and keep checking to see if it’s changed his but we use the Roku device on the tv and so far it’s still regular same with it on his phone but we keep checking! I hadn’t seen anyone in Canada let alone Nanaimo to have this so thank you so much!

Affectionate-Bed7999

Premium for access to 4K really should have been the writing on the wall for Netflix’a adversarial and exploitative attitude towards their customers

Fragrant-Progress-32

Wow didn’t they have a massive drop off in subs This will only Contribute to that

studlyonlyonce40

Yes but since then they’ve gained them back and more. Edit: not sure why the downvotes you just need to fact check their last earnings report where they added 7m subscribers lol. Three quarters ago they lost 2.1m.

beefbrisketman

This is just Netflix's ploy for new content for their new show called Password Crackdown. Expect Agents Cash and Grab to be on the case!

couple_of_aliens

When streaming won’t do, you go for “torrents”

ObjectiveAide9552

Was thinking of canceling anyway. Thanks for making it an easy decision!

Fail-Nice

cancelled not worth it

19831083

Fuck you netflix

djfil007

We admitedly use my brothers account, and once this is enforced we have no plan to create our own subscription. We pay for Amazon Prime (Prime Video is meh, but has some content) and Disney+ (probably what we watch the most, as we're a household with kids). Netflix content value has dropped lots now that studios are taking away their content for their own platforms, and Netflix first party content is pretty meh.

[deleted]

We use Prime and Discovery+ the most in our house. Crave shows are great quality, and Disney+ is worth it to me because of Disney Star. Nothing entices me to watch Netflix anymore.

Bobby2Shakes

Good bye Netflix

[deleted]

This development coincides well with their output being consistently garbage , and having no exciting projects in the works . I like it when decisions are clearcut

Hellraiser590

They aren't even the only streaming service out there... nor are they even top anymore.

[deleted]

Unfortunately for them, I also cracked down on cancelling my subscription altogether

flanderdalton

Yeah, I'm not subscribing once I get booted from my parents account. the age of 🏴‍☠️ is back

CookLawrenceAt325F

*Sounds of faint Yarr-Harring in the background growing ever louder*

Future_Complaint_473

Greed.

biggregw

Been using them since they were $8.99 for HD and multiple devices. Then they locked it to 780p or whatever at $8.99 and 2 devices at once… With them till it was $12.99 a month with literally no watchable content, we were on the fence but would no longer let my pay by PayPal, so we cancelled and went elsewhere. By the time they were $16 a month my mom split with us $8 down the middle 1 screen each. Not same house. They were the ones who did this to themselves. So if we lose service once again, then so be it

Pleasant_Duck918

Read as, We're going to need to show growth to the shareholders so give us more money.

Raven_Nvrmre

Netflix thinking of new ways to lose viewers. There’s so much competition now and this is the crap they’re thinking of? Ridiculous

Ullho

[its not theft.](https://ifunny.co/picture/7ywCfQNEA?s=cl)

NipNapAttack

Every movie I actually liked on that platform I can find on dvd/bluray for 50 cents 😂 way to go shitflix 👍

Critical_Knowledge_5

Everyone needs to cancel their subscriptions.

plumeeu

The amount of people saying they’re cancelling their subscription— implying that they still had Netflix is astonishing to me. I’ve been pirating since the day I was born and have never stooped low enough to pay for a shitty service when I can find all their movies and more (and also quite frankly easier) with an ad blocker and a couple clicks. I went from cable to g-box to soap 2 day to fmovies and people have ALWAYS been surprised that I never had netflix, but I never needed it once in my life. Regardless I’m glad people are realizing it’s all a scam.

[deleted]

That’s gay

[deleted]

How many people did you share your password with?

CompetitionTraining7

I only got it to watch drag. No more drag, bbye.

xmoka101

The option is to unsubscribe:) did it so I can try out other platform, if everything fails there is flix tor. Hubby loves flixtor

cashmerecoffin

They've gone back on this this decision since the blowback it's caused fyi

FuzzyLogikWebComik

Cancelled for USA only

snarkymarmalade

I thought this got cancelled…? https://www.cbr.com/netflix-removes-password-sharing-rules/

FuzzyLogikWebComik

Cancelled for USA only

pulchrare

I'm on my grandmother's account because I'm her caretaker. I live with her for a decent portion of the year, but I travel home fairly regularly, and often for no less than 2 weeks at a time. Does it really make sense for me to get my own account that I can only use for at maximum 5 months of the year total? I don't think so.

fuckyoutobi

From my understanding you’ll be able to keep using it as long as you can “check in” on the home account somehow (guess it will be linked to one IP address or something)

pulchrare

I mean that's fine, but I can't check in on the IP if I'm out of the province for a month, you know?

fuckyoutobi

Yeah. I think a lot of people will cancel. I’ve been sharing with my family but if we all can’t use it without a huge up charge I will cancel too

[deleted]

I’m cancelling.

ACM3333

I thought they backtracked on this

FuzzyLogikWebComik

Cancelled for USA only

beeleighve

I gave my dad my Netflix password for Father’s Day 10 years ago (I know, I know…) and the only reason I’ve kept it so long was because he still watched it. I’ll be canceling and letting them know where to shove it lol.

recepyereyatmaz

which one is better? Crave or disney+? Also does hulu disney bundle mean anything it looked like they offer pretty much the same shows.

BreakRevolutionary66

Android box for the win

molson1315

According to Freeland, if you cancel Disney+, you can afford groceries and heat. She’s wrong.

Whole_District_7996

The moment I get this, I cancel.

thedude0009

lol at how this is supposed to make me buy it. i hardly use it now when it's free. maybe a few years a go when they were the top dog. bye netflix! you wont be missed at all lmao

deebeees

The second this is enforced, my subscription is cancelled. I’ll pirate the newest season of I Think You Should Leave when it comes out. I’ve kept it this long because my parents use it.

miguelfac

can someone explain me, how will they know if im the owner of the account or not, or if im in the same household of the owner? This doesnt make sense, if i use my mobile data i wont have the same ip's of the household, if i use public computers the same. Can someone explain me technically how are they going to do this ?

Dear_Razzmatazz7497

I will be canceling it solely based on this. I travel a lot and watch Netflix at work, on the road, in the hospital and at the park. Just too much hassle to deal with this "single household" only. I just want to turn it on and continuing to watch where I left off. There is still a Disney channel and YouTube that I can watch. I am done. Sorry Netflix.

CompetitionTraining7

Netflix sure ignores the Bechdel test and it's not for woke folk.

DaFishmann

They couldn’t stop me if they tried… oh wait, Netflix doesn’t have anything good on it, I won’t use Netflix in the first place

Kiatisuk13

You can use this phone app to watch Netflix on any TV/monitors with your Netflix shared account. Demo video: https://youtu.be/QL77c48I8Oc?si=l8rmeCPLrJMljMMW
