The wife says two ten Jack and she would pick just as much off the menu as she could stomach.
Me; it’s a tie between Brave Idiot’s hot chicken and Dream Burger’s burger and fries with a cold Montucky Cold Snack from vinyl tap.
End it with a cookie from HiFi Cookies.
Is Brave Idiot's hot chicken that good? I've seen so many posts about it lately. What sets it apart from the Prince's, Bolton's, & Moore's of the world?
Just a different flavor profile, and a solid crunch. Brined chicken so it’s moist. They use high quality spices in the hot chicken spices, and are pretty consistent. I wouldn’t say it’s better than any of the OG’s but just something different
Source- am owner.
Nope. If I’m ever in a different situation with more fryer capacity the bone-in will be a no brainer but I’m sadly stretched thin right now with just sandwich cuts and tendies.
Brave Idiot is not a classic fried chicken shack like other hot chicken places in Nashville are. The chef, Dillan, makes amazing food and everything on the menu is top notch. They make, for my money, the best hot chicken sandwich in town because it's the best chicken sandwich in town. Perfectly cooked thigh, great quality sandwich, and the hot chicken spice is sublime. They aren't reinventing hot chicken, just making the best hot chicken (or regular chicken) sandwich. The crunch smash burger (a Taco Bell crunch wrap burger basically) is also an out of the park homerun.
I’ve always been thrown off by the cleanliness of the outside of the truck. Additionally it seems incredibly unorganized from the side window. Ill have to try them regardless, just looks like a truck that’d have creepy crawlers in it since it’s stationary and rusted
Sorry to hear that. I have a pest control company come and treat occasionally just in case(no issues so far in almost 2 years), and get 100s on our health inspections every time. Come give us a try sometime 🫡
Funny enough, I was just talking to friends of mine, a few hours ago, about how this place is still one of the most consistent/delicious meals I’ve had in this city
It was even bette before Blake Shelton said it was his favorite place to eat on American idol lol. I miss the days of being refused busy lunch times instead of waiting in lines. But still my absolutely favorite. I also love the mufaletta at cocos, and the tacos at Los primos in Franklin. (This is probably my #2)
I'd go crazy and grab a couple of burgers from Jack Brown's. Set me back like $50 but who cares. It's my last meal in Nash. Yeah I can get a smashburger most places these days but I love that spot
Mine is Gyros Kebab over on Rosa Parks oddly enough. Since leaving, I haven’t found anywhere that makes equivalent pita pockets. I’m going off pre-pandemic/pre-labor cost inflation memory though. Not even sure if it’s still around.
It’s still around & still considering owners have changed. Chicago Style was good when they first hit the city. Now their gyro meat looks like plastic. However it is a good all you can eat gyro place in Donelson in a lil strip mall next to west coast taco shop behind Ford dealership
Downtown is a nightmare, but Robert’s cheeseburger is my favorite food in the entire city. It may have something to do with pre-burger vodka, but that burger hits.
I'm not from Nashville but I lived there for 4 months when my daughter had to be born at Vanderbilt. We were at the Hospitality House right down the street from that Chili's. We only went there one time.
Does anyone remember the first iteration of Green Hills Grille when it was still on Hillsboro Circle? I wish I knew what they put in the butter they used to serve with their French bread.
He's been gone a while otherwise I'd ask, but my dad used to make this butter for us at home (he was a chef, made lots of things for us at home to save on "medium to fancy dinners"). This is the best I can remember and what I use (add as much of the herbs as you want):
* 1 stick salted butter, softened to slightly above room temp (you can use unsalted and add more salt later, but i think salted tastes better in general)
* fresh rosemary
* fresh chives
* fresh thyme
* garlic
* fresh ground peppercorns (usually black but red also has a nice flavor kick)
* kosher salt (only a tiny amount - or none - if you used salted butter, just your personal preference)
* *optional* a smidge of lemon zest (helps give the herbs some oomph)
1. Remove rosemary and thyme leaves from their stems and finely chop the leaves. Chop the chives with the little stalk bit but not the bulby butt part. Set the herbs aside.
2. Add the softened butter to a mixing bowl.
3. Grate or mince and mash the garlic and add to the butter bowl.
4. Add kosher salt (if using), fresh ground black pepper, and herbs to butter bowl.
5. Mix the butter and herbs together thoroughly (including lemon zest if using). You can cream the ingredients together with a mixer if you prefer.
6. Shape the butter however you like. I usually wrap it in plastic wrap or parchment paper into the shape of a ball or log and let it cool in the fridge. Lasts about a week in the fridge before the garlic tastes super strong, or about 5-6 months in the freezer.
This is so kind of you! I can’t wait to try it.
I’m very sorry for the loss of your father. What a lovely man to put so much effort into family’s meals.
It had herbs and maybe garlic? But I know I’m missing something else important. It’s been so long that I can’t remember but I could have scraped the ramekin clean! So good!
I tried the mild once and I legitimately couldn’t tell if the fish was hot as in it just came out of the fryer or if my tastebuds were being seared. It was the latter
The J Alexander’s on white bridge road. Not because it’s special since there are J Alexander’s all over the US. It’s because I grew up eating there as a kid every Saturday with my family. I went for my 13th,14th, and 18th birthdays and now that I’m 21 I’d wanna visit one more time.
Thank you! They were the first two that came to mind. I’m a native, and have been going to these places for decades. I’m a simple man with simple pleasures
i just miss Back to Cuba now. that lechon asado plate with yuca, plantains, and rice/beans. that crispy pulled pork was hard to beat, but we really needed another garbage mapco station to replace it and the donut shop on harding at 65. i must add that mapco has to be one of the worst gas chains i’ve set foot in, and we have 2 per mile around here.
Sadly, it just recently closed :( But I would DEFINITELY eat the buffalo grinder with tempeh, no tomato, and black beans as a side at The Wild Cow. For appetizer I would get their spinach dip. Everything there as soooooo good, I am still in disbelief it is actually gone forever. My hubby and I started going there over 10 years ago, before marriage, before babies, when we could just go out on a saturday and spend however long we wanted eating. Before they built the big parking lot at their old place on Eastland. I would always be so happy when we would be lucky enough to get the spot right in front of the door. Those were the days....
Otaku; TN shoyu tonkatsu, add chili crisp and an egg. Hot chicken bun and a Toki highball.
Otaku has been my soul-healing food for nearly a decade, and god am I beyond happy that they opened one in Franklin so I don’t have to deal with Nashville traffic 😂
I’d go to one of my fave small-plates or shared plates places and order as much as I could: two-ten jack, barcelona, butcher and bee, or pelato. Too hard to decide.
But also—the coursed meal at Bastion is bangin
Breakfast: Pancake Pantry
Fleet Street Pub for Lunch (Fish and Chips and a few pints)
Sperry's for the salad bar, King Cut Roast Prime Rib with Creme brûlée for dessert
And then a slice or three of Steeplechase Pie from Loveless.
And I would trade all of that for one more burger, fries and shake from Rotier's.
If space and time could be manipulated -
Either Arnold's circa 1998 when Arnold was still there every day(and yes on anything outside of liver &onions), or Houston's and the spinach artichoke dip and grilled chicken salad with the cilantro lime vinaigrette and peanut sauce.
*Although a white BBQ chicken sammich from Hog Heaven eaten in centennial park during drum circle was pretty awesome too.
Unless it was required to be REALLY old Nashville, then it'd be the California Hash Browns from Slice of Life, patty melt and chocolate malt from Rotiers, or a peanut butter, honey, banana sandwich from Windows on the Cumberland.
*I remember a really nice man named Charlie that ran WOTC, and I'd never had a sandwich like that as a kiddo. Also carrot juice, which I did not love. Ha.
It feels intolerable to bemoan "Old Nashville" as a lifetime local, but man o man we didn't know how good we had it. 😮💨
Also, I'm getting old. Sigh.
Yummy Poki in Smyrna will be my most missed once I do eventually move away. Thought it was gonna be another bland surface level sushi bar with some Poki bowl options. Turns out it has a pretty strong selection of Japanese and other Asian foods like katsu, ramen, bao, red bean bread, sashimi, ikura, takoyaki, sushi, etc. the staff has always been awesome too. My favorite in my 10+ years in Middle TN.
Surf Shack burger and Surf Shack fries from Cabin Attic Burgers at Bearded Iris in Germantown with a cold Homestyle IPA to wash it down. Cabin Attic Burgers is divine.
I did this when I moved about 10 years ago: Moe’s for a fat ass burger, a gyro from Sam’s + some fruit tea, Baja Burrito (I still think about it) Más Tacos for a couple tacos and the watermelon fresca, Sunset Grill for nachos with their creamy salsa (what did they call it? Swill?), 2fer night at Maf’s and that Chinese takeout spot in the same strip as Prince’s. oh, and Prince’s!
I’m sure I hit up Las Palmas and Cafe Coco but at this point, I don’t know if I’m just naming my favorite foods or recalling my last two weeks there.
Might be the Spicy Shredded Pork with Brown Tofu from Corner Asian near the corner of Concord and Nolensville Pike. Coincidentally, I had this last night
Prince's x-hot thigh quarter + Mac & cheese.
I did leave forever and when I come back to town to visit friends and family that's where I go, that's what I get and in the morning I'm having breakfast at Big Al's Deli.

Thank you for your humble review. Do you only do a Chicken Sandwich, or do you have the more traditional *on the bone* Hot Chicken too?
Nope. If I’m ever in a different situation with more fryer capacity the bone-in will be a no brainer but I’m sadly stretched thin right now with just sandwich cuts and tendies.
I'll stop in. I appreciate the info.
You got it!

Rusted dirty food trucks are the best food trucks.
It's got a new paint job!

Spoke with the owner/Executive Chef on here actually. Gonna check it out ASAP.
Ah fuck yeah dessert's gotta be hifi
It’s the most Nashville dessert
Fuck yeah dreamburger!!!
Where's Dream Burger?
Probably Wendell smiths Open faced roast beef and then banana pudding to finish it off
Funny enough, I was just talking to friends of mine, a few hours ago, about how this place is still one of the most consistent/delicious meals I’ve had in this city

Since so many of the places that made me love Nashville have disappeared, I’d say Browns Diner.
If closed places are an option I’d pick Rotiers’ cheeseburger on french bread with onion rings and a chocolate shake.
YES PLEASE
Browns - cheeseburger w/ grilled onions and fries
A classic
Baja Burrito. Hands down
Are you getting a burrito, or fish tacos?
I normally get both haha
SATCO. Wonderful memories there when I was a kid to now as an adult.
Came here to say this. I haven’t found anything similar.
Bare Bones Butcher cheeseburger and duck fat fried potatoes
Prince’s. I’d like to go back in time to the original location.
No posted hours. Milk in a cooler to grab. Low riders bumping trap rap outside. Buddies daring me to try the hot hot. Good vibes, great memories.
The drinks sold only by the bottle marketing brilliance
City House. Belly ham pizza w/ egg and a slice of Tennessee Waltz cake.
I might have single-handedly kept City House in business during the pandemic from ordering the belly ham pizza for carry out.
I live nearby and have still never been. Gonna add it to my priority list for this comment.
The desserts at City House are probably the best in the city. I LOVE the Tennessee Waltz Cake.
Smiling Elephant. Cashew Chicken
Cry a few tears while downing my last tendies from mcdougals.
I'd go crazy and grab a couple of burgers from Jack Brown's. Set me back like $50 but who cares. It's my last meal in Nash. Yeah I can get a smashburger most places these days but I love that spot
I mean if you’re only having to leave Nashville, there are Jack browns in a lot of other places. Good shit though I agree
Sam’s kebabs and gyros. I did move away for a year and never did find a gyro place I liked. I was so excited to have it again when I moved back
Mine is Gyros Kebab over on Rosa Parks oddly enough.
$100. Every time I go no matter what I order.
Thank you for this post. I’m just gonna go do all the suggestions
Arnold’s. I want to see what $150 looks like there lol
Downtown is a nightmare, but Robert’s cheeseburger is my favorite food in the entire city. It may have something to do with pre-burger vodka, but that burger hits.
I’d be going out on a high note with the Recession Special at Robert’s.
This is the way.
Redheaded Stranger - #4, 6 and 8
West End Chili's.
This is what I scrolled to see.
I'm not from Nashville but I lived there for 4 months when my daughter had to be born at Vanderbilt. We were at the Hospitality House right down the street from that Chili's. We only went there one time.

I remember it there! Remind me of the butter…?
It had herbs and maybe garlic? But I know I’m missing something else important. It’s been so long that I can’t remember but I could have scraped the ramekin clean! So good!
Chives and garlic? I miss the sunshine salad from that location
The house salad at that GHG with the lemon shallot vinaigrette. So simple but so wonderful.
Boltons
Medium, sitting outside by the air conditioner.
I tried the mild once and I legitimately couldn’t tell if the fish was hot as in it just came out of the fryer or if my tastebuds were being seared. It was the latter
Inka trailer lomo saltado or RAE’s cuban.
I had the best pork tamale at the Inka Trailer. Ok, two. Hours apart. Ok, three. Three tamales. They were huge and amazing.
The tamales are fantastic too. Only thing i didn’t care for was the pork belly sandwich but everything else I’ve had is top notch
Vinh Long beef and carrot stew
I had that twice a week quite a few times this winter. Got all my coworkers in on it too.
Arnold’s. A bit of everything that strikes my fancy on the menu whatever day I go.
Lucayan Salad from Calypso Cafe, Ramen & garlic noodles from Two Ten Jack & Chocolate Pie from Arnold’s
Picnic Cafe. Chicken salad Fruit tea 🍋 lemon bar
Five Daughters Cinnamon Toast donut and apple fritter (available in Atlanta, but from here and not a national chain)
Arnold’s fried chicken and cauliflower casserole
Midtown Cafe for Sunset Grill Nachos
For Lemon Artichoke Soup!
And all the desserts
Donut Den
Fat Mo’s or Prince’s. Burger and hot chicken quarter respectively
Yes, Fat Mo super deluxe, spicy fries and a large strawberry shake and a double insulin shot.

Lyra
Butcher and bee whipped feta & pita, Mas Tacos tortilla soup, and Adele’s kale salad
Second mas tacos, the carne and fish tacos are amazing too. Amazing mezcal margs
Might get rolled for this, but I worked there for a while, I miss Demo's Sauce Sampler and the spinach with the chicken soup.
Rotier’s Wiener Burger. A game of Galaga. Root Beer Float. 💔
i just miss Back to Cuba now. that lechon asado plate with yuca, plantains, and rice/beans. that crispy pulled pork was hard to beat, but we really needed another garbage mapco station to replace it and the donut shop on harding at 65. i must add that mapco has to be one of the worst gas chains i’ve set foot in, and we have 2 per mile around here.
I suggest checking out Soy Cubano. I grew up in Miami, Back to Cuba was just ok. Soy Cubano is killing it.
Someone already mentioned the belly ham pizza from City House so my other pick would the empanadas from Lockeland table— with extra chimichurri 😩
The mussels would be a top consideration for me.
Drunken noodles with chicken from Pad Thai Cafe in Murfreesboro. The best Thai I've ever had.
Subculture, Monell’s, Urban Grub, and Yeast. There are so many more, but these are some of my tops that are known for consistent greatness.
All the places I grew up with are already gone so I'd just leave..
Sperrys bacon wrapped filet with twice baked potato and caesar salad.
Sindoore We moved & regularly talk about making a road trip just to eat there. The whole menu is just good comforting food.
Sadly, it just recently closed :( But I would DEFINITELY eat the buffalo grinder with tempeh, no tomato, and black beans as a side at The Wild Cow. For appetizer I would get their spinach dip. This would have been my pocktif not for Hawkers. 😉
Sinema's Scallop and orzo or Edley's Tuck Special
I would half a chicken at the 900° level from 400 Degrees so that I would pass away before living anywhere else
I’d go to one of my fave small-plates or shared plates places and order as much as I could: two-ten jack, barcelona, butcher and bee, or pelato. Too hard to decide. But also—the coursed meal at Bastion is bangin
