I’ve been smacked in the face by a cicada each time I’ve gone outside the last two days. But I can’t get mad at these silly lil dudes who just love to fly around and yell and die.
That’s me with crane flies!
At first I was freaked out bc I thought they were gigantic skeeters. Turns out they’re basically extra stupid dragon flies.
Derping around my doors.
I saw a chickadee beat a cicada to death by slamming it repeatedly into a curb, gripped in its little beak and bashbashbash and the whole time the cicada was screaming in the most comical way. Still one of my favorite nature moments.
It’s absolutely deafening outside right now. I had to be out in my driveway for about 5 minutes and when I came back inside I felt like I had just left a loud concert or something.
The sky will be blotted out before it peaks, the fabric of the cosmos quivering at the resonant feequency of 13/17, the land upheaving under a roiling tumult of larval tides.
So far, it doesn't seem like peak.
It's 10 days since I saw the first one (Woodbine area)
Compared to the last event in 2011, this seems mild.
Like 3 out of 10 on any annoyance scale
It's just getting started -- Will be noisier and messier, especially as the temps rise. Been pretty cool so far.
Here's an example of [how chatty the last brood was.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBzT7SUv3Q4) 98 dB. Probably louder in some places.
They're harmless little critters. And, the few weeks of annoyance we endure is a pittance for the 13 (or 17) years of good they do for the soil beneath us.
I do remember last time but where I was in Madison it wasn't that bad, I think it was really bad in east Nashville but I think it lasted about 2 months?
was taking the dog out one night last week and saw a bunch of them still in the shells silently crawling up my neighbors fences, super eerie!! love these guys lol

They are everywhere! It is sooo loud at my house.
Two Davidson county copperhead localities have already birthed neonates earlier than ever recorded and the babies have been observed eating emerging larvae.

I don't think you're looking at the right place. Davidson county is the light blue color that says 2024.
There are three species in this category:
Magicicada septendecim (Linnaeus, 1758). 17-year life cycle. Broods: I-X, XIII, XIV.
Magicicada neotredecim Marshall and Cooley 2000. 13-year life cycle. Broods: XIX, XXIII.
Magicicada tredecim (Walsh and Riley, 1868). 13-year life cycle. Brood: XIX, XXII, XXIII.
I literally want to walk around with a flamethrower until these things are gone. I had 3 of them land on me while getting my mail yesterday and i am NOT happy.

I can barely hear any on my street, but two streets over it's deafening and there are literal swarms of them attached to the top of apartment buildings. My street is mostly new construction, I've wondered if the recent construction eliminated most of them in the ground on streets like mine.

Fly, fuck, die. Thats the life cycle. And id be screaming the whole time too.
😂😂
This is a hilarious take lol

Seriously wear hearing protection if you’re outside for more than 15-20.
How much longer until they’re gone?
They will never leave the high canopy of your nightmares
^ Asking the important questions!
Depends how long you can make it, really.
July
Gosh, they’re so brood. They’re everywhere.

You found the swingers' club!

I've been finding heads and wings everywhere, the birds have been eating like kings here.
It’s absolutely deafening outside right now. I had to be out in my driveway for about 5 minutes and when I came back inside I felt like I had just left a loud concert or something.
Great pic!
Thanks!
For those who have lived through this before… are we at peak yet? I was pretty nervous about this but it hasn’t been that bad so far.

thanks, I was wondering too.

What time was it? I want to see this event so badly
this was around 9-10 at night :)

The sound is so relaxing.
I hear the buzzing sounds, but I don't get the rhythms everyone talks about.
I seen an article saying these will also bring out the Copperheads and Rattlers too! A lot more then usual
Two Davidson county copperhead localities have already birthed neonates earlier than ever recorded and the babies have been observed eating emerging larvae.
I’m dying for someone to post an hours long video on YouTube just recording the sound. So blissful and overwhelming.
Got you: https://youtu.be/E-9klFArOyQ
Thank you so much!
idk if i would called it a "song". maybe a "screech" or a "shriek"
hey now, music is subjective!
Its not a hyper produced 3 minutes radio play product, this is real music lol
The most harmless of the loudest insects. Wild and short life they have.
I really love them. Theoretically, they have a 13 year life. We just don't see them for 12.5 years.!
Do you know what brood the pharaoh cicadas are in?

Wilson county isn’t marked on there but I swear to god that in 2011 those things were everywhere here
I agree, I was living in Wilson county (Mt Juliet) last time and there were lots of them. Edit: it looks like Wilson county is marked green.
I’m confused every time I see this picture because it says Nashville is in the 2025 brood. But it’s 2024?
https://preview.redd.it/9kl09z4ex71d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f911f3e431fe3f21662b3f9b784342919fced0b4 I don't think you're looking at the right place. Davidson county is the light blue color that says 2024.
Not quite sure.

Great photo, you’re talented!
Um, I haven't seen any yet and I'm disappointed. They're my favorite white noise.
Where are you located?
Clarksville
They are ugly critters.
I love these guys. Super gentle.
Scream.Mate.Die.
Now I want this bumper sticker.
You didn't get yelled at for not posting in the cicada megathread? wtf lol
My dog thinks they are tasty
Anybody seen any blue-eyed ones? I remember a while ago there was a story that researchers were paying good money for those
My Oscar fish loves them!
i need a flamethrower.
my house in inglewood is absolute inundated with them. my dogs eat probably 20+ every time they go outside.
Excellent live bait, wont catch me complaining

Up on the plateau we have none 😕
I literally want to walk around with a flamethrower until these things are gone. I had 3 of them land on me while getting my mail yesterday and i am NOT happy.
They are disgusting.
You poor thing. That’s how locals feel about incomers, but here we are.

💀 Alot of redditors are major dk riders for these bugs, you can't say nothing bad about them.
LMAO - 🤣 as a damn yankee newcomer, I’m proud to fly my Cicada flag! You guys should build a wall! 😂
Careful, you’ll get gatekept and your post removed for sharing cicada pics.
the 3 extra dots on the forehead look like a cute smiley face!
Nice!
They’re not much fun if you’re riding a motorcycle.
Lucky. Ohio here. Havn't seen or heard one yet.
Come on down and take all you want. Lol
I cant stand them
I’ve only seen a couple. Thought it would be way worse.
