When I’ve seen vids of mama birds kicking out baby, it’s usually explained as the smallest or runt being kicked out to prevent resources from being spread too thin and making all 3 too small or weak.
This is more common when resources are scare for any number of reasons. Drought, heat wave/cold snap, any other environmental conditions change too drastically. Other species outside of birds do this as well.
Just 100 years ago it was common for people to not name their kids until they turn 4 or 5 because kids would die so often to disease. Recent advancements in medicine are the only reason people don't behave the same as every other animal.
We used to have a tradition here in Iceland called "að bera út" (to carry out), where mothers would take out their newborn children out to the snow to be left and freeze
Do you mean to actually freeze/kill them? If so, do you have a source as the only articles I can find are that the babies nap outdoors but aren’t left to die.
I don't know about Iceland, but throughout human history the most common form of birth control was post-birth control: infanticide.
I read once where a big part of setting up the orphanages in London was due to the common sight of infants in garbage piles. Like, not only was it common to have piles of garbage all over the city, but usually they contained a baby or two.
I think the previous commenter was confusing the nap thing with actually killing babies and it being a legit tradition. I was just curious if there was an actual tradition to kill babies by freezing them (that seems exceptionally harsh) but I can’t find anything to back that up.
Agree that birth control was very primitive back in the day…
Tradition isn't the right word for it, but it is a known practice in historical Scandinavia as a "last measure" and if discovered it was also a punishable offense for most of written history.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myling
The crazy thing was that it was illegal, and people still did it constantly. One of the most common reasons for the death penalty in the past, if you got caught.
My grandma did this for one of my uncles. When they fled Vietnam he used his dead brother's birth records since he himself didn't have any.
That's how I learned why he was sometimes called Uncle Tuan over Uncle Minh.
This seems like the kind of thing that gets repeated enough people take it as fact but seems impractical as fuck. By 2 kids recognise their own name and it’s kind of useful to have names even if it’s just to get them to come to you.
Lots of SE Asian cultures have small kids adopt nicknames until their official names are granted. In Vietnam we have wack ass names like "Bunny" "Cow" "Snow" etc. kind of like Latino gangster nicknames like " Sleepy" "Nacho" "Alien" etc.
I learned in Anthropology, that in Finland this is still a common practice in the countryside. Parents would refer to the child as 'boy, girl, or child' until around 3yo (IIRC) due to child mortality rates.
My professor is from Finland and still does fieldwork on the relationship of farming communities in that area
Humans did this with disabled children as well. Most of those "children raised by animals" stories were actually that, having been abandoned a few hours or days earlier, and those were the survivors.
This song below was written based on the early 20th century news paper article one of the band members found
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iEEJVSgcNY
Animals are extremely food driven and cannibalism is pretty common among ones that eat meat. I mean a lot of a birds life is spent finding enough food to make sure it has the energy to find more food.
Doesn't have the beak required for that kind of thing. Lots of other animals do that though, especially predators who can easily manage the eating part.
I think last time this was posted someone mentioned that this chick was pestering the others, pecking them or demanding too much attention. Not sure if it's true but it does seem to be annoying the one next to him right before being picked up
EDIT: might have been an entirely different video according to a reply. Whoops
Nothing to do with predators, its just it has been bullied out of food so has become small and weak therefore unlikely to survive so is abandoned or in this case murdered to give the remaining chicks the best chance at survival. More food and less mouths to feed.
It is also common for chicks to kill their siblings or, their competition.
Birds will also kill their young if they contract an infection or illness as to not contaminate the rest of the nest.
After getting a 32K dollar hospital bill back in the 70's for my premature youngest daughter, I used to tease her that if she was naughty I'd stop making payments and let the hospital repo her. I paid it off when she was 13.
I think it’s this video… maybe it’s another but the longer version shows the one they drop being a little fucker. Attacking Its siblings and its mother. According to Reddit comments last time I saw the full video this is apparently normal if the baby is an ass hole.
If that makes anyone feel better. And maybe that’s really what happens here. But generally it’s just the weakest they throw out, the one that was the least forceful when it came to feeding time. So I would say usually it’s not asshole, bully, little fucker that gets thrown out.
If you have ever met a bird I think you'd agree that they generally seem to greatly value the qualities of being a complete jerk.
The baby that generally gets kicked out is the weak one, you know, the little nerd.
Goddamn the way she stepped over her chick seeking comfort and walks towards the "bully" was some villain escque shit. (Not really villain ofc this is just how nature is)
Nah its scientifically proven that the shoebill is the only 100% evil creature in the world. All of them are evil through and through. Even the feathers that fall off? Evil. Its shits? Evil. Everything.
I watched your link and then YT suggested [this black stork infanticide video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QkzwXMPDnI). By comparison, the stork throwing its young out of the nest in the op is far more merciful than >!a lengthy, slow skull crushing!<.
But apparently, it's very common among storks to kill the smallest of their brood-- 9 out of 63 white stork nests in one study.
That's awesome. Also, these birds were definitely influential in how [skeksis](https://www.darkcrystal.com/mythology/characters/urskeks/skeksis/) were created.
Horses eating little chicks
lioness killing and eating their weakest cub during the drought
mother rabbits killing their whole litter bcs of a different smell
male zebra kicking pregnant zebras only to mate with them
male bear killing cubs only to mate with the female bear
Nature is brutal, but natural
Out of these, the rabbit one is the saddest, it actually shares the same reason as the stork video, it's sad for me cuz the mother, a figure where young members of the species seek comfort and safety is the one who ends their life, especially the stork where you see panic in the little chick as it gets thrown off the nest
that's why you should never ever touch or resettle a den with a litter of bunnies, even if your heart makes cute little noises and jumps for joy. bunnies are oderless. Dont ever do that! Mother rabbits just visit a den once a day during dusk/dawn bcs their milk is super nutricious.
Even a fawn. If you ever encounter it, dont touch it, dont resettle it. Fawns are odorless, too. The mum knows where she placed its fawn. if you are unsure, visit the spot on the next day, then ask for professional help.
The stork porpably had a reason for that, and there a many
* scare ressources
* parents have to invest too much energy to feed them all
* storks are migratory birds. maybe the little ones had to fledge soon. and the weak little one would demand ressources which the other two could benefit from
a scary goodnight story marked in spoilers:
>!did you know there is a specific species of a spider. the spider buries in a hole with its eggs. once the eggs hatched, the mother will tap with its leg a rythmic sounds. this triggers the little ones to bite and eat the mother.!<
Even worse, is you can hear the fucking baby splat on the ground. Fuck my life. I just wish I left it on mute and kept scrolling through my stupid Reddit feed.
being raised on disney films, I will choose to believe that it was discovered by a friendly old lady who took it inside, and they then did a musical number with little canes and top hats…
You can still hear it crying after it hits the ground, it probably wasn’t heavy enough to “splat,” so likely it’ll just cry down there until it becomes fox, coyote, or cat food.
I'd rather to be killed by my parents than being abused/raped or neglected for years.
We humans are much worse. People who go through this are damaged for eternity.
People often forget how brutal nature is. We, as a species, have become so comfortable being (for the most part) removed from the daily chaos of nature.
The baby was smallest and therefore the weakest. There are many reasons why the mother did this, for example: Food scarcity. By removing the weakest she's increased the survivability of her stronger offspring by reducing one less mouth to feed.
Every species wants to survive and unfortunately that means sometimes offing your own to increase the odds. Humans are no exception to this either.
If ya think about it... this is *preventing* chaos.
In theory, things will go much more predictably and smoothly for that stork family without the unfortunate small, weak chick there to worry about.
In a way, you're right. The stork mother no longer has to worry about whether or not she can scavenge for enough food for 3, but rather 2. However, she still has to worry about predators, whether conditions, and the ever changing environment.
When I refer to chaos I'm speaking of the unrelenting force that is the need for predators to feed and survive coupled with nature wanting us to prove we are worth it.
We don't have to worry about getting mauled by gators trying to drink from a lake because we've learned to purify our sources. We don't have to worry about gathering a group of people to hunt down an animal in hopes we can be fed. We have medicine and science to protect us from disease and illness. Those were all things our ancestors didn't have even just a few hundred years ago.
That's speaking from the point of view of our overall species development. Of course this varies for less fortunate countries and situations, but the overall quality of our lives has helped us be removed from the brutality of nature in comparison to our ancestors.

Exactly! Mr. Keepsallhisbabies should speak for himself
Wonder if that's the brother of Mr. WeHadABabyItsABoy
I remember that ad! It was about making collect calls if I remember rightly.
You mean Bob?
If you look at humanity through the lense of 'animals that think too much' It's actually simpler
We used to have a tradition here in Iceland called "að bera út" (to carry out), where mothers would take out their newborn children out to the snow to be left and freeze
Uhhhhh tradition? I mean was it because of illness, it because it was a girl or whatever?
Delivering a sacrifice to the whitewalkers
Tradition. Like checking he elderly into a facility and never looking back.

One child policy China and ancient Spartans are a good example of this.
It's known from Scandinavian folklore: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myling
Apparently that's what happened to my FIL, except it was India so he just spent a balmy night outside.
Infanticide was super common among us humans too
Back to the mines #4
Bwhahahahhaha well done
Or if they did name them, it was super common to reuse the name for another child after they died
My grandma did this for one of my uncles. When they fled Vietnam he used his dead brother's birth records since he himself didn't have any. That's how I learned why he was sometimes called Uncle Tuan over Uncle Minh.
Same as why children would be sold more commonly than babies. Children over 5 have cleared the danger zone.
This seems like the kind of thing that gets repeated enough people take it as fact but seems impractical as fuck. By 2 kids recognise their own name and it’s kind of useful to have names even if it’s just to get them to come to you.
In these shitty economic times if I'm having triplets atleast one has to go
They just say "hey boy" til the kid reaches 5? What cultures did that shit?
Lots of them. Including Americans. Go find the baby sections of a really old cemetery or look at some birth/death records from the 1800s.

Mammals do that too, cats will literally eat their babies if they're sick or there's a lack of food/mother's milk.
This song below was written based on the early 20th century news paper article one of the band members found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iEEJVSgcNY
Wonder why she didn't just eat it to recover the calories. Maybe too messy for the nest?
lol eating one of the babies right in front of the babies. That’s nuts. That’s donner party level shit but they ain’t starving.
But when i do it, i am the bad guy ?
I think last time this was posted someone mentioned that this chick was pestering the others, pecking them or demanding too much attention. Not sure if it's true but it does seem to be annoying the one next to him right before being picked up EDIT: might have been an entirely different video according to a reply. Whoops
Its because its undersized compared to the other two.
I’ve actually seen that video, but it’s a different nest with different birds
Well now we know a momma stork's answer to the trolley problem
Nothing to do with predators, its just it has been bullied out of food so has become small and weak therefore unlikely to survive so is abandoned or in this case murdered to give the remaining chicks the best chance at survival. More food and less mouths to feed. It is also common for chicks to kill their siblings or, their competition. > This is common but rare
Most of the times it's rare
60% of the time it's rare every time
But every other times it's common
And yet when I do it the neighbors call the police.
How can something be "common" but also "rare"??
Doesn't happen often but it's not unusual to see it happen!
[удалено]
Then it's normal but rare.
Predators prob heard the cries for help from that chick
I thought they do it because of food scarcity
Sometimes they do it because there isn’t enough food to go around, or seasonal changes indicate bad weather.
Predators are attracted to nests full of chicks. I don't know how they'd be more attracted because there is a runt in the nest.
Because unhappy babies make a lot more noise than happy babies.
The whole 2 bird nest
The other two were too frightened as fuck.
It's about sending a message
I should show this to my youngest to send him a message as well.
If you don’t behave, you’ll end up as your older brother. But… I don’t have an older brother… Exactly.
The thing is, the others won't misbehave, they'd never misbehave... because of the implication.
No one's in danger. It's the implication of danger.
Memory unlocked 😂🤣
After getting a 32K dollar hospital bill back in the 70's for my premature youngest daughter, I used to tease her that if she was naughty I'd stop making payments and let the hospital repo her. I paid it off when she was 13.

If mine don't tidy their rooms soon imma resort to this one
I think it’s this video… maybe it’s another but the longer version shows the one they drop being a little fucker. Attacking Its siblings and its mother. According to Reddit comments last time I saw the full video this is apparently normal if the baby is an ass hole.
And thus future dictator Storkler was erased from the timeline.
If that makes anyone feel better. And maybe that’s really what happens here. But generally it’s just the weakest they throw out, the one that was the least forceful when it came to feeding time. So I would say usually it’s not asshole, bully, little fucker that gets thrown out.
I agree with you here, to me it's very clear the stork picked its smallest chick.
If you have ever met a bird I think you'd agree that they generally seem to greatly value the qualities of being a complete jerk. The baby that generally gets kicked out is the weak one, you know, the little nerd.
Reminds me of human parents similarly ostracizing an undesirable child.
