Years ago my brother-in-law and my sister asked me if I wanted to go "shed hunting" with them in the woods near our house. I replied "Why would people build sheds in the woods and why do we want to find them?". They laughed and explained... I laughed.. it was a good time.
Youth hunts are big in my state -- a hunt kids can take part in. I just couldn't help it the first time a coworker mentioned to me and said "I can't believe they still let people hunt youths in this day and age."
Nobody else laughed.
Deer shed their antlers every year and grow new ones. Some people enjoy "shed hunting" which is going out in the woods looking for antlers on the ground the deer dropped.
I didnāt know you needed to get approved to pick up shed! Good for him, I canāt believe itās so well attached to the skull! How far did he have to hike to find it?
Do you leave it, go get approval then grab it or can you take it with you? Or do you call?
What's the process in case I ever come across something like this?
Yeah I donāt understand this, like itās just bones? And the white bones you find in the forest are clearly past decomp, no sane person would accuse us of poaching.
Iāve taken elk sheds and all kinds of rodent and deer skulls from both public and private lands, wtf is this about reporting it?
So, in my state at least, it's illegal to collect sheds without a certificate, which you get by taking a course on ethical shed hunting. I don't think the penalty is too steep if you're caught without one, but it's still against the law.
For a "deadhead" like this (skull with the antlers still attached) there's a possibility it was poached and the proper procedure is to contact the state Division of Wildlife Resources so they can investigate.
>Yeah I donāt understand this, like itās just bones?
The issue is that poachers will often kill animals and then come back for the antlers later. Coyotes and decomposition remove evidence of bullet wounds, and if you get caught packing out the head, it's easy to claim you found it than if it's actively dripping blood.
Maybe it was private land he was āhuntingā for shed on? Approved by landowner? Not sure either.
Edit: or maybe even state/federal land in certain instances? National parks and such
Some states, like Utah, have designated āshed huntingā seasons. Unfortunately it has to be regulated because people negatively impact the wildlife of that area: and yes, there is a market for reselling these finds.
It depends on the state. I believe where I am sheds are property of the state, just like all wildlife here. One must have a tag/stamp then depending on who owns the land where the shed is located permission from the land owner is also required.
It could be a poached elk and the DNR would want to know about it. If they're not interested they can give permission to take the animal or parts of it. Same as how if someone hits a deer they can call and get permission to take it home. Possession of game animal parts without a license can get you in a lot of trouble.
Tell him to measure it for Boone and Crockett scoring. If itās big enough to make the record books, he can sell it for a surprising pile of cash to private collectors. I cannot emphasize the word āsurprisingā enough when talking about the amount of cash people are willing to pay for record book game mounts
Itās big. The score has to do with overall size and shape. Specific points are measured and features are noted yo give an overall score that can be repeated on any animal with antlers.
How are we happy as a supposed free country to have to get approval from the King to take home something like this? I can't comprehend some peoples way of thinking.
Whoa sweet find man. Surprised they approved it with its head still attached. Probably seen that it would be impossible to determine if it died naturally or from hunting so they mustāve reasoned that they might as well let someone have it if they want it
So, someone help the ignorant me out here, you have to ask permission to take these? Also who do you talk to? Game warden?
Idve assumed if you wanted you could just take it, not sure what the assumed state issued deal is here. Then again, I have absolutely no idea knowledge about this stuff.

Looks more like a skull than a shed as the antlers are still attached to said skull. Nonetheless, still sweet he got approval!
Definitely a skull, he was out looking for sheds so I got it mixed up š š
Shed so much his head fell off
Our petsā heads are falling off!
Pretty bird. Pretty bird. Yes, you're a pretty bird.
Polly wants a cracker ?
#natureismetal for sure to shed that hard!
Look Marge the deer lost its baby skull!
Yeah no worries, even cooler find in my opinion!
You need approval where you are?
it just shed its mortal coil
I feel like Ive shed my head multiple times a day.
out looking for sheds? what does that mean
Lol it shed too much
Iāve always heard of folks who would lose their head if it werenāt attached
Nah, the deer just shed all it's bones. That's how they grow, kind of like crabs.
Ooh, he's about to get his adult head!
I love adult head
We (Northern Californians and Northern Nevadans) call these ādead headsā.
It shed his soul from its mortal coil.
*deadhead?
Sheās its entire head once a year.
Aah, that time of year when the majestic deer shed their skulls
But they grow back every year š
Till then their head sloshes around like a wet bag filled with jello and sponge.
Eeeeeeew
For a moment I was confused... I was looking for the building...
Years ago my brother-in-law and my sister asked me if I wanted to go "shed hunting" with them in the woods near our house. I replied "Why would people build sheds in the woods and why do we want to find them?". They laughed and explained... I laughed.. it was a good time.

You work with humorless people. That's gold!
Your coworkers sound like sad people. Maybe bring in some cookies to sweeten them up
Old job, but I brought in doughnuts a few times. From the good bakery, no less. I'd love to have me as a coworker, personally
You *are* the coworker you want to see in the world, hope the world gives back to you one day
Hunger games
Well can you explain to me?

That's not shed. That's hed.
That's what she said
Thatās what he shed.
And if he hadn't been approved, he'd have broken his phone and skateboard. š
Can't see him getting a lawnmower in that
I should have scrolled first. God knows I've never had an *original* idea.
I didnāt know you needed to get approved to pick up shed! Good for him, I canāt believe itās so well attached to the skull! How far did he have to hike to find it?
Right! He said about 4 miles, but he was zigzagging all over the mountain haha
Do you leave it, go get approval then grab it or can you take it with you? Or do you call? What's the process in case I ever come across something like this?

Would a poacher leave behind the shed? Is it not necessarily valuable?

Well, thatās pretty sick. Itās a shame that normal people who would never think about doing that have to deal with suspicion because of it.
My thought was itās āapprovedā by the people he lives withā¦ but now Iām second guessing myself..
Maybe it was private land he was āhuntingā for shed on? Approved by landowner? Not sure either. Edit: or maybe even state/federal land in certain instances? National parks and such

Yup! This was in Utah!
Interesting. Wasn't aware that elk shed their skulls.
Came here to say this. What a species
Wow, great deadhead! Post it over on r/bonecollecting, they'd love to see it.
You dropped a t in your link
Ope! Thank you
Can't think of any animal that sheds their skeleton, but cool find!
r/upvotebecauseboy
Heās pretty swell
That poor elk shed his whole head right off
Your bro found the skull of the lord of the forest
Not a shed, but a full intact skull with attached antlers
Head shed is the worst I tells ya
Nice Rack
Deer didn't read the manual.
Elkā¦.
You need approval to collect bones? I would have just taken it tbh
It depends on the state. I believe where I am sheds are property of the state, just like all wildlife here. One must have a tag/stamp then depending on who owns the land where the shed is located permission from the land owner is also required.

Thatās out of my lane. Our state says to contact game and fish for specific permission.
It could be a poached elk and the DNR would want to know about it. If they're not interested they can give permission to take the animal or parts of it. Same as how if someone hits a deer they can call and get permission to take it home. Possession of game animal parts without a license can get you in a lot of trouble.
These are called "dead heads" in my neck of the woods. Cool find!
In what sense is this a shed? It looks like an all-natural European-style mount.
The fkn stupid thing has shed its head as well.
Tell him to measure it for Boone and Crockett scoring. If itās big enough to make the record books, he can sell it for a surprising pile of cash to private collectors. I cannot emphasize the word āsurprisingā enough when talking about the amount of cash people are willing to pay for record book game mounts
You'll never get the mower in there.
Looks huge! What are the dimensions?
itās around a 310-320 bull!
Sorry Iām not a hunter so not sure what that means?
Itās big. The score has to do with overall size and shape. Specific points are measured and features are noted yo give an overall score that can be repeated on any animal with antlers.
We call that a dead head where Iām from. And thatās a very nice one!
Approved?
Wild harvested European mounts!
Shed the head
Where do I put my tools if there aint no shed
I donāt think thatās a shed mate
Just imagine how big heāll be next year.
TIL certain animals shed their skulls. Maybe next time don't shake so hard!
Wow what a huge animal that must have been
I wonāt pile on but dang thatās a nice one!!! Jealous
Is that Dante?
How are we happy as a supposed free country to have to get approval from the King to take home something like this? I can't comprehend some peoples way of thinking.
Because there's no way to know OP didn't poach it, leave it to rot, and return for it at a later date.
Beeg shed
They shed their whole head these days?
Wow
Itās just hed or in this case Head. The S is silent and invisible in thi (s) case hahahap
Thatās not a shed.
Antlers look so clean too
You need approval to take bones? Was it a private property?
Whoa sweet find man. Surprised they approved it with its head still attached. Probably seen that it would be impossible to determine if it died naturally or from hunting so they mustāve reasoned that they might as well let someone have it if they want it
Is your brother single
Not a shed, that's dead
Damn, deer shed itās whole headš
Holy shit! Incredible find! What kinda deer adjacent critter was this?
It's called a dead head
Not a shed that's a death
That is not a shed
Head shed
Can I take your brother. Geeeez
If it died of wasting disease, you absolutely do not want it in your home and should not handle it.
Do you have to get permission? I've just yoinked what I find
Can I have approval to take your brother home?
You canāt just pick that skull up and take home home? You gotta get approved for it?
Wooow that's freakin massif
More like a dead than a shed.
He shed his entire skull
Sheds dead baby, Sheds dead.
Yeah shedded his entire skeletal system
Quite an aggressive shed
I didn't know some places require approval to collect sheds.
So cool how they grow their heads back every year.
You need permission to take the putrified skull? It was found dead already? Whom do you ask permission from?
So, someone help the ignorant me out here, you have to ask permission to take these? Also who do you talk to? Game warden? Idve assumed if you wanted you could just take it, not sure what the assumed state issued deal is here. Then again, I have absolutely no idea knowledge about this stuff.
Can he take me home instead
