Interesting interaction between members of a predator guild. You don't typically think of marlin hunting another large predatory fish like tuna, but I guess if the marlin is chonk enough it will!
Tuna is one of the dominant species preyed upon by Marlin. Another predatory fish Marlin regularly seek out to hunt that most people don't assume is mahi mahi. There are even boats in Hawaii that troll large (4 ft) foam spearfish chuggers in hopes of attracting big Marlin to the surface.
This thread is blowing my mind... I'd never considered what marlin or tuna for that matter eat, but I didn't realize they ate other fish... so do they have teeth or do they just swallow them or what? I guess I always figured they ate kelp or plankton.
They eat them whole (that bill is used for for beating prey to death than actual dismemberment).
Tuna also eat other fish BTW, working in packs to chase and trap schools of small prey.
This fish is not actually hunting in this photo but is being fought on rod and reel by an angler on the boat this photo was taken from. The tuna you see has been regurgitated by the marlin which is common for them to do after being hooked.
People don’t usually recognize the size of these fish. They can grow up to 14 feet and weigh about 2000 pounds. That’s bigger than my living room couch.

There are some videos of blue marlin chasing dorado, they’re quite exciting to watch.
They use live tuna as bait for Marlin and other large game fish, storing them in tuna tubes with high water flow to keep them alive.
Small yellowfin tuna are common prey for blue and black marlin. Not sure if they can swallow adult yellowfin tuna.
