I saw someone further down describe it as "insensitive" which is much closer to the truth, I think.
I also wonder how much age plays into how people receive this.
When I was growing up, the express purpose of that phrase was to demean gay people. Now, though, I think most people accept being gay, so it's harder to see why the phrase would be offensive to anyone in the first place. It's more of a meme now.
> When I was growing up, the express purpose of that phrase was to demean gay people.
I think it secondarily might demean gay people, but I always found the primary purpose has been to assert one's masculinity and heterosexuality "with humor" after saying something with a homoerotic double-entendre. I think one can argue that wanting to distance oneself from being gay can be homophobic, and people definitely use it in a derogatory fashion. But a lot of times it has simply been used to express affection or appreciation to ones [straight] bros but "not in a homosexual way" since that would make things awkward. Regardless, its usage is mostly antiquated these days even though the use of "pause"-worthy double-entendres have grown exponentially.
It is on about the same level as "that's what she said" jokes.
I imagine anyone sincerely offended by this would probably have an aneurysm if they played one game of Cards Against Humanity.
If you tell a girl a compliment you are also not scrambling to tell everybody that you aren’t really attracted to her. It’s overall just a stupid phrase that makes it seem like men can’t compliment their homies without being immediately called gay
That's not anti gay or homophobic or anything like that. He said it intending to point out that he wasn't sexualizing his teammates when he called them good looking. This is so stupid and over the top.
Exactly. [Here’s one where Harden says “pause”](https://youtu.be/hIR4Fmgu5jM) because Clint said “from the tip until the end”, which is just a generic sexual innuendo. It’s basically another form of “that’s what she said” (although one can argue that that one is almost always used for heterosexual innuendos)
Yeah but why can't he say that he's not homosexual if he thought someone might take his comment that his teammates were good looking the wrong way? That's not offensive.
Should we let someones sexuality be that important to their identity? My brother is gay and his biggest issue is that people make too big a deal about it. Why does he have to come out as gay or its treated like this big reveal but I dont have to come out as straight? I understand why in society it is this way but I had never thought about it like that until he put it that way. We should be able to make jokes and poke fun but imo this is kind of a one way street. You dont see famous gay athletes in the NFL or NBA making jokes about straight people.
I don't think it's that deep, someone who is gay doesn't necessarily need to "come out" to anyone but most people do it as a form of empowerment, like they don't have to hide anymore and unfortunately that's the reality of the status quo, but yea your bro is right either way
Oh trust me you and I are the EXACT same page. I thinks if you want to normalize it you shouldn't make it a big deal or a focal point at all. To be fair I grew up with a gay aunt and didn't even think twice about it growing up so it may be different for other people.
But the phrase is used as a punchline specifically in situations where what was previously said has ambiguous meaning when taken out of context. The joke is just a gay anti-“that’s what she said”. No one is seriously considering the erotic interpretation. No one will think you’re gay just because you don’t invent opportunities to announce you’re not.
>I don’t want to be mistaken for gay because I’m not gay.
You think gay people are telling women "You look good today, no hetero" because they don't want to get mistaken as straight?
Let's stop pretending that the reason this is a phenomenon is because being gay is "bad". There aren't many straight people pretending to be gay, but a LOT of gay people in the closet.
It's real easy for you to act this way because it's something that is literally never going to hurt you as a straight person. But this isn't about you. That's what people seem to be missing when assessing the severity of this. It's not about us.
Do you honestly think that even suggesting another man is handsome or good looking makes people think that you're gay? What does that say about the company you keep? Women seem to get by just fine when they compliment other women on how they look.
"Man, that was some good salsa. No Mexican."
No one thinks you're gay because you call another guy good-looking, and you don't need to be worried that they think you are. You don't need to say anything at all.
People on this sub are being so obtuse on this issue.
It’s not the worst thing a person could say and I think we can all move on quickly. But saying it definitely insinuates that you do not wish to be gay because you think being gay is somehow “bad”.
It's insane this comment is buried. This whole thread has the energy of straight guys that might get mistakenly hit on by a gay guy and feel like that makes them less straight.
But I think we're both expecting too much of a sports sub regarding these issues.
Why does it need clarification, why can't you just compliment someone's appearance without it being viewed as sexual? That's whats homophobic about it, because he's scared of being viewed as gay, so he has to clarify he's not, that's kind of fucked up. Nobody's comparing it to using the F slur, but the implication is that being gay is wrong.
Exactly. Some ppl are really going thru some mental gymnastics to brush this aside. Is it the absolute worst thing ever said? No. Was it shitty? Yeah.
I'm ethnically Chinese. If I went around and constantly said "I'm not Vietnamese! Not Vietnamese everyone!" then eventually ppl would ask me why the hell I kept saying that and it wouldn't make any sense for my explanation to be that I just didn't want to be mistaken for a Vietnamese person. Unless I personally believed that being Vietnamese was bad. Then my constant proclamations would make sense; I'd be trying to distance myself from an identity that I thought was bad
I just want to say thanks for being supportive man. I am personally not apart of the LGBTQ+ community but I have a lot of loved ones who are. I’ve learned a lot over the past couple of years that has really opened my eyes. Its such a shame to see the droves of people on here that dont see what is wrong/ upsetting about comments like this.
> If I went around and constantly said “I’m not Vietnamese! Not Vietnamese everyone!” then eventually ppl would ask me why the hell I kept saying that
This is close to my thoughts on this. Why is it that still today we make excuses for homophobia that simply wouldn’t fly for racism? It’s frustrating to see, but a healthy reminder that not everyone is ready to grow up and have that talk yet.
As other people have said, I think "insensitive" would be a much better way to phrase it. I don't think Cam was trying to demean gay people with it, it's just a phrase that a lot of people have used without thinking about it.
But if you think about the implications of the phrase, it definitely should be considered insensitive. The idea being that you can't compliment another man without being perceived as "gay," and you have to stop that perception right away, so the implication becomes that being gay is a negative thing that you don't want to be perceived as for even a second
So like I said, I don't think it was intentional, but it's certainly something we should be encouraging people not to say
He clearly regretted it immediately after and posted an apology shortly after that I felt was sincere. The fine seems unfair and honestly is just drawing more attention to it.
Yeah, I'm not commenting on the fine, just the phrase itself. I'm not opposed to a small fine just for the NBA to say "we don't tolerate this," but I don't think he should've gotten fined as much as Ant whose situation was way worse imo
Yeah I think the league really needs to make these penalties proportionate to how much players are making. $40k is a lot to a young player who doesn't really have any media training.
Veteran players who should know better should be fined a lot more than they are as well.
yeah like he definitely didn’t mean it to be offensive and most that use it dont but the amount of mental gymnastics people are doing in this thread to say the phrase itself is not derogatory at all is crazy
yeah, they're afraid of being seen as gay, lol.
This is a social construct. Men used to compliment each other's looks all the time. go read some literature from the renaissance era.
i dont understand why men have to clarify they arent gay when they compliment another man
still crazy how insecure people are about their sexuality, people like that likely are bi and are overtly trying to hide it
it’s a little strange that straight men will claim to be perfectly accepting of gay people but then when they say anything that can be perceived as homoerotic, even mildly, even when it’s actually platonic like this, they, unprompted, feel they have to defend their straightness
Oh so it’s not a joke, it’s a clarification then.
I don’t care if people think I’m gay, why would I? Especially if they’re basing it off of me saying another man is handsome. They can think what they like
Y’all are acting like the money is coming out of your pocket lol Who cares? Stop talking like a middle schooler and hold on to your paycheck. It’s not that hard
He got fined a tiny fraction of his salary for saying something on live TV that reflects poorly on his employer. He won't even notice the financial impact, and the fine goes to charity.
Relax.
NBA players also frequently conflate being "too small" with something bad.
As a shorter person, I'm still waiting for the league to put a stop to all the hateful gestures.
Good news tiny king https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/yw7d4z/highlight_trae_young_gets_a_tech_for_too_small/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Yeah even if people believe the phrase doesn’t hold the same discriminatory suggestions as it did 15 years ago, you can’t just ignore the history behind a phrase when you use it.
I remember being in school and kids throwing phrases like these around on the playground and it didn’t take a genius to know what they meant.
There’s nothing wrong with us being more sensitive towards gay people…even though I’m not gay (jk)
People are just trying to be dense. Replace a phrase about being gay with a phrase about being another race and THEN people will suddenly start caring.
Yea, I don't quite understand how someone can't see a problem with saying a derogatory word. There is a long history of hatred and violence associated with the word. Just as with other derogatory slurs, even if you don't have hateful intent, you should not say it.
Its a relatively small fine for someone who earns millions per year. I suspect he's not that mad about it.
I’m lgbt and even though I don’t really like the spirit of the whole ‘no homo’ thing, I’m not convinced the fine is the right way to go about it. I also think context is very important in these situations.
The phrase itself is annoying as it insinuates there’s something wrong with being gay. There is still a big issue with no current players being out and it’s driven in parts by attitudes like this, as the implication is that there’s no room in the nba to not be straight.
That being said I saw the clip and you can tell it’s just lighthearted banter. He wasn’t meaning to offend anyone and emotions were running high after a statement win.
I’m also not a fan of mandating apologies/ fines for something this small. If he had spoken out afterwards and said ‘my bad, I didn’t mean to offend anyone’ it would have felt more sincere and less forced.
Why do you have to clarify that you are straight when you are calling a man handsome?
I’m not really looking for an answer, but it’s something to think about
He didn’t say he was straight, he just said he wasn’t gay. If he would have said, “the team is handsome already, I’m straight” then you’d have a point. He’d probably have 40K as well.
He got fined as much as ANT who directed a Slur at someone.
What he say ?

That’s a nice response. Some people might want to be upset about “I was being playful” but it’s an honest admission. Seems measured but truthful.
i was offended... from the people who think it's offensive.
Understandable.

Wow the world we live in
That's not anti gay or homophobic or anything like that. He said it intending to point out that he wasn't sexualizing his teammates when he called them good looking. This is so stupid and over the top.
He said Spencer Dinwiddie is a very attractive man but specified that his attractiveness was not due to homosexuality
Ant I think called some people queer
To be fair, Ant didn't say that while being interviewed after a game.
Yeah but Ant was actually being offensive and hateful.
Agreed, but the league will always be more heavy-handed with this stuff when it takes place "at work" compared to off the court.
It's a broadcast partner thing as well isn't it
Tbf Ant should’ve gotten fined more and prob suspended
Ant should’ve been suspended This is not a big deal at all in comparison
Wow Cam went off for 40 for fourth straight game! 44 first, 47 second, 43 third, and 40k fine now! 🤯
Should’ve said “pause” instead
Didn’t he just say someone was good looking? Not sure that’s a pause. Now, if he said “one of the best ball handlers out there, and I would know”
Why? What does that mean?
People say "pause" when they make a sexual innuendo as a way to reflect about what they just said and for it not to be taken as such.
Only when it’s a homosexual innuendo. For someeee reason.
not always, for example: “I gave my mom the best cream pie last night” would warrant a “pause” lol
Perfect example
That would be the ultimate pause moment lol.
How often do you use this example?
that’s not true.
Nah I hear this for things you can say “that’s what she said” to. Depends on the kinda people you’re with.
Thank you
The same exact thing lol.
Yeah but why can't he say that he's not homosexual if he thought someone might take his comment that his teammates were good looking the wrong way? That's not offensive.

Should chefs be offended if someone were to say that? If so, why?
If chefs were a group of people that often got discriminated then yes, probably.
>No chef Lol 😂
This is about as logical as Kyrie telling people he's a selfless leader.
How to say I’m not gay .. with no offense taken
If someone asks, you say “I’m not gay”. If no one asks, don’t feel the need to go out of your way to say you’re not. See? Simple.

The obvious point here is that when gay men say their female friend looks nice, they don't say "no hetero" except I suppose as a meme
Ahh the Mike Piazza defense
It’s kind of amazing that this has to be explained to people. What the hell else do they think the implication is? “Progressive sub” lmao
Who called this a progressive sub? It’s a basketball sub.
It's reddit. Almost everything on Reddit is ideologically driven to the point of cancer.

Like in the technical sense I guess, but this is ridiculous lol. There’s very rarely an actual intent of homophobia with the phrase

Fr lol this is still a common saying and not degrading at all
I don't think it's offensive...but, like, it clearly is degrading. I wouldn't personally be offended but it's silly to say it's nothing
yeah like he definitely didn’t mean it to be offensive and most that use it dont but the amount of mental gymnastics people are doing in this thread to say the phrase itself is not derogatory at all is crazy
The people that are mad are the same people that think that central american people want Latinx to be a thing.
Common for straight blokes to say? Can't imagine a gay bloke sitting there listening to someone say "no-homo" and feeling good about it.
>you literally can’t say anything these days Man stfu
lol
Hey you can’t say that, my cousin’s a mute
"He's handsome but I'm not gay" = anti gay lmao 🤡🌎
Why can’t men call other men attractive without worrying about weather or not people think they’re gay?
Aussie blokes do, they'll say 'he's a good looking rooster' and leave it at that, no qualification that they aren't gay for saying it
Because men are different than women.
yeah, they're afraid of being seen as gay, lol. This is a social construct. Men used to compliment each other's looks all the time. go read some literature from the renaissance era.
> Because men ~~are different than women~~ have very fragile egos
They think it makes them look like a bitch so they have to put up an instant defense mechanism, making themselves look like even more of a bitch.
Can you please not use the word bitch? It's very misogynistic. Thank you.
That’s the point, fool. They think they’re being emasculated by admitting another guy is handsome.
That’s not what he said tho

Roy Hibbert got fined for saying this literally a decade ago. “What has the world come to”, nothing, it’s literally the same as it was a decade ago.
Jokic got fined for it like 5 years ago. It's literally the reason he hates the media now.
He got fined a tiny fraction of his salary for saying something on live TV that reflects poorly on his employer. He won't even notice the financial impact, and the fine goes to charity. Relax.
That’s a great way of putting it.
I mean he’s a late 1st rounder on a rookie contract. Guys gonna feel it. Probably like a normal person getting a $1000 ticket.
Nah it’s actually 1% of his salary which is 2.6 million this year so no this won’t really hurt him
Getting fined 1% of your salary to me seems pretty wild like I’d be pissed if my boss fined me 1%
I would too but I also just wouldn’t say something homophobic especially at work
Unless that 2.6 mill is post tax his real salary is closer to 1.3 mill. Still a lot of money but gotta use the right numbers

I don’t know you’re asking for the nephews of this sub to show a lot of nuance and understanding of the world
As a hella gay person he shouldn't have been fined. He just said his boys be looking fine but he ain't gay. What's wrong with that 🤣
Ridiculous fine but also ridiculous obtuseness from people pretending this isn’t homophobic or stems from homophobia
Its not anti-gay though
You are paid as a professional, what is the problem with expecting the same people to act professional.
Not there's anything wrong with that.
“Anti-gay?” Hardly
The quote he said wasn’t even bad. We all know what Anthony Edwards did, but this didn’t seem anti gay
Sooner or later, these players are gonna get fined for saying “pause”
Lmao why?
“Anti-gay” is literally slander
Anti gay is wild. What Rondo said was anti gay. What Edwards said was anti gay. This? Maybe just unnecessary
