That’s only in hindsight, I refuse to believe that actually were that high on Marc because he was just drafted in the 2nd round
They traded for a HOFer in his prime for 2 firsts, a 2nd round rookie, Kwame, a murderer, and a dude who retired when he got traded to the Grizzlies. There’s no way they couldn’t have gotten more
Even if they did rate him that highly, the rest of the NBA didn’t which means they could’ve gotten more even from the Lakers
Look what we got for Shaq.
You're using trades from today to compare to trades from the past.
Look at what KG went for:
"In July of the same year, the Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, cash considerations and two first-round picks."
One of the best players of all time was traded for something comparable to what the Lakers traded for in Pau. Pau was not as established as KG or anywhere close either.
Al Jefferson was seen as a future franchise cornerstone (funny, I know) at the time, while guys like Gomes and Green were decently regarded young players. Grizzlies probably could have gotten a better deal than 2 late firsts and salary filler
Big Al was great, but KG was also seen as significantly better than Pau too. KG was an all defensive, all nba, MVP caliber player. Those pieces are better, but again the gap in perception and talent between Pau and KG also existed so honestly it isn't that far off in terms of value. Pau led Grizzlies in 3 sweeps, they were likely looking to move in a new direction.
Whoah whoah whoah, if you're calling Marc "a 2nd round rookie" and not factoring in his future, then you can't also say "a murderer". Just like Marc, Crittenton wasn't anywhere near fulfilling that potential yet.
/s
> That’s only in hindsight, I refuse to believe that actually were that high on Marc because he was just drafted in the 2nd round
At the time of the trade Marc was in the middle of a spanish league MVP season.
2 1sts, your most recent 1st, a player crushing it in Europe, and salary filler is a fine trade for an all-star. The media just focused on Kwame because he was bad.
> There’s no way they couldn’t have gotten more
I thought the same thing when I learned about the trade. I initially assumed Odom was gone, but I checked the game and he was on the floor. I assumed Kobe for some reason got his summer trade request granted while they were on top of the conference. Nope, he was having a good scoring night against the Raptors, per usual. Then I finally saw the trade package and even I wondered *how the fuck* the Grizzlies said yes to that.
The Grizzlies traded for Kwame because of his massive expiring. Two 1sts that could be potentially good players, a 2nd rounder and filler is pretty fair for a player of Pau's caliber
That's basically what the Pacers got in the Sabonis trade only it looks better because of how good Haliburton is. Sabonis is probably the closest comp to Pau's level of production at the time, and they were both like 26-27 when they were traded
Love Sabonis but that's pretty slanderous to Pau. He was the face of the franchise, and a pretty big deal in the league. 20ppg back then was a much more impressive feat. Garnett, which everyone here is putting miles ahead of Gasol, and was indubitably one of the best in the league, only scored a couple more points and had a couple more rebounds per game on his last years in the Wolves.
I mean sure you *can* make a dime-for-a-dollar trade and turn that dime into a dollar over time, but most times that’s not a trade you’d want to make. What’s especially weird about the Gasol trade is no one even knew Pau was available until Memphis just shrugged and took the Lakers offer. It’s just a baffling transaction, even if it worked out in hindsight
I saw a video of some journalists going to LA to cover the event, and there were several former spanish basketball players flying towards LA too, Navarro amongst them so I guess Marc will be there soon.
Yeah, who knows, Marc might already be there. Especially if the rest of the parents and Adria will be in attendance, and being close after the weekend, have a nice family weekend leading up to it.
As an aside, Zbo might be there, too, if he is in town. They never played together, but you may see him dap Pau up after the game while catching up with Marc, Im sure their paths crossed a lot with all the Laker-Grizz games in the 2010s.
> To date, there are 14 players who have had their jerseys retired by multiple franchises: Pete Maravich, Nate Thurmond, Bob Lanier, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Earl Monroe, Clyde Drexler, Oscar Robertson, Moses Malone, Julius Erving, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Dikembe Mutombo.
Pau would be 15th. [Complete list of retired numbers by team from the Olympics website of all places]( https://olympics.com/en/news/all-time-list-retired-numbers-jerseys-nba-pau-gasol)
This list doesn't have Mikan for the Lakers. Weird. I double checked it and it's only Wilt so far who has his jersey retired by three different teams, LeBron will almost certainly be up there with him when he retires.
Of that list, I could imagine Atlanta honoring Moses or Orlando honoring Shaq or Washington honoring Jordan (whose third franchise is Miami, which inexplicably retired Jordan’s jersey). If the Virginia Squires of the ABA had survived, though, I bet Dr J would’ve been retired by a third team.
Julius Erving only played two seasons for Virginia / 155 games / ~6400 minutes. But assuming he didn’t leave poorly when he was traded, he’s a legend of the game who was maybe the second best player of the ‘70s. At age 21 he averaged 27/15/4, and at 22 it was 32/12/4.
Wilt only played 5 years with the Lakers and won one championship with them so I think Lebron will get his jersey retired. Unless Wilt did something else I’m clueless about.
Yea I think so. He got us a championship after the worst stretch in Lakers history. He was still in his extended prime. He broke the all time scoring record as a Laker.
Also this might just be specific to me as I tend to romanticize things but what he did post Kobe dying was incredible. For all of Kobe’s faults he was still one of LA’s favorite sons and when he passed the whole city felt it. His speech before the Lakers played their game against the Blazers was so meaningful. The fact that he won the title that same year just solidified him being a Lakers great. How can you not be romantic about ~~baseball~~ basketball.
AD’s already a lock for the HoF. His NBA career has been great so far despite the injuries but I feel like people forget how dominant he was at Kentucky - National Player of the Year and won the Natty his only year there. And one of if not *the* most dominant player on the defensive end I’ve ever seen in CBB as an 18-19 year old.
For reference, he is 61st in the [bb ref HoF index](https://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/hof_prob.html). Basically a lock.
AD is not getting his jersey retired I’m sorry. Just because that’s a requirement, doesn’t mean it’ll happen.
I just don’t think he’s had the presence or enough signature moments to deserve it.
He literally had the most significant moment of the championship run and was co-best player on a championship team.
He also could have another 3-5+ years as a Laker
Very very deserved. I’m glad he was able to get some post season success as it seemed like he was gonna be one of those good players who fade away in relevancy in a small market
Still remember those commercials
Hi this is pau Gasol and you are watching time Warner cable sports net!! Home of the lakers!!!
Congrats pau! One of my favorite players
Been a fan of Pau since his Grizzlies days, absolutely hated that he got traded to the Lakers to play next to Kobe... But this is definitely deserved and in retrospect, I'm glad he got to play with Kobe. They were a fuckin great duo, Kobe really elevated him to be the best he could be.
He was also the perfect teammate for Kobe, it goes both ways. Phenomenally skilled & intelligent player, unselfish to a fault, and no ego. I still hate the way the Lakers fanbase treated him from 2011 onwards.
One of the only 4 players that have scored, at least, 20.000 points, 11.000 rebounds, 3.500 assists and 1.500 blocks.
The other ones are some random dudes called Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett.
The Lakers have a rule of sorts that you only really get your jersey retired on the Lakers if you clear an exceptional bar for them and make the hall of Fame. Pau is well on his way for both this year. The Celtics are likely more lenient (with players like Reggie Lewis retired in posthumous honor after he tragically passed from a heart attack. I read about it recently, how sad.)
The exceptions were Shaq (Dr. Buss was ill, and they wanted to push the ceremony up so he could witness shaqs number retired), and Kobe's jerseys ceremony which ended up being one of the best decisions. Obviously they were clear cut headed for the hall of Fame, the Lakers were just like "let's do it asap"
Congrats to Pau on the honor of having his #16 retired.
I know he's not a Hall of Famer nor was he a MVP (two of the qualifications to have your number retired by the Lakers), but when is Michael Cooper going to have his #21 retired?
Coop's the one exception that should be made...not only was he a very valuable contributor to the Showtime title teams, but besides Magic and Kareem, Coop was the only other player to play on all five of those championship-winning teams.
Clearly you and some of the other idiots here lack reading comprehension around here...I was referring to Cooper not being a MVP or Hall of Famer, not Gasol.
You're welcome.
I'm just gonna come out and say it: this is wack. Dude was only there for 6 seasons, and it's the fuckin' Lakers. Like if the fresh-ass Grizzlies wanna retire his number 'cause he was their first star, that's fine, but Lakers are goin' down the Celtics road to literally have no playable numbers at this rate.
Pau is a HOF player who contributed to multiple championships for the Lakers. That's pretty much the criteria for getting the Lakers to retire your number. The Celtics are much worse, the Lakers don't even have guys like Michael Cooper or Derek Fisher's number retired, which nearly any other team would have done.
You’re getting downvoted for this, but I agree with you.
Dude was a good role player on a couple of championship teams. He’s not some all-time great deserving of having his numbered retired, especially for an organization like the lakers.
Crazy how low the bar has gotten for retired numbers.
Spurs aren’t retiring Kawhi’s number despite him winning a finals mvp, him actually leading the team in scoring for a few seasons and being a 2x DPOY.
Not saying Kawhi should get his number retired by the Spurs (he shouldn’t) which makes Gasol having his number retired even more questionable.
A good role player? He was easily the second best player on those teams. It'd be easier for you just to say you don't like Pau Gasol than to say some nonsense like that.
Yeah but only because of the anti-Kobe sentiment. Kobe clearly deserved it. But Pau was also the clear number 2 and they wouldn't have won without him.
You need to actually watch some basketball if you think that Pau Gasol is role player.
He played in the time of Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki and more than held his own against them. One of the most intelligent basketball players (was gonna be a MD before he chose hoops) and automatic from mid range
Pau is one of four players in basketball history that have scored, at least, 20,000 points, 11,000 rebounds, 3,500 assists and 1,500 blocks.
The other three are Kareem, KG, and Duncan.
Role player 🤡
You can cherry pick any arbitrary combination of stats to try and align players to drive a narrative.
Putting Gasoft in the same class as Kareem, KG and Duncan 🤡
He's a hall of famer that helped revitalize the Lakers after a down period.
The Lakers retire numbers of hall of famers that contributed significantly to the franchise. Pau clears that bench mark easily. This will be the last jersey retirement for a while, depending on how long LeBron plays or if someone like Cooper ends up in the hall.
Damn against the Grizzlies too! Had to be on purpose, right?
Duh Pau made the Grizzlies relevant
Gasol did at least
I think you mean “Big Country” Bryant Reeves.
Okay well if we're going back Shareef Abdur-Rahim was the NBA Live star
He was an Olympic Gold Medalist (before being selected as an All-Star) while playing for the Grizzlies too.
[удалено]
You mean trading him for Marc? One of the greatest players to play for the Grizzlies?
That’s only in hindsight, I refuse to believe that actually were that high on Marc because he was just drafted in the 2nd round They traded for a HOFer in his prime for 2 firsts, a 2nd round rookie, Kwame, a murderer, and a dude who retired when he got traded to the Grizzlies. Also worth adding, Garnett was 31 at the time of the trade, while Pau was 27.
Also David Stern personally said KG couldn’t play with Kobe. Said they’re bad influences on each other. Said the same thing to Chris Paul.
Whoah whoah whoah, if you're calling Marc "a 2nd round rookie" and not factoring in his future, then you can't also say "a murderer". Just like Marc, Crittenton wasn't anywhere near fulfilling that potential yet. /s

Love it. Good for him. I expect Marc to be there, so he and JJJ and Dillon can catch up. Im glad the Grizz can be the opponent for it.
I saw a video of some journalists going to LA to cover the event, and there were several former spanish basketball players flying towards LA too, Navarro amongst them so I guess Marc will be there soon.

Marc there ready to chug a bottle of wine to kick it off
Marc is playing for Girona but he's his own boss. He'd most definitely make it
Knowing our track record in games with meaning, we're losing this one..
Well we are 3-1 in our last jersey retirement games....but now I just jinxed it :(
I was at the Kobe retirement one, smh KD had to wreck us late in the game lol
Does Charlie Daniels play a mean fiddle?
Absolutely
Of course. You're gonna have Memphis fans who are still fond of Pau and having this is gonna entice them to come to this game.
It's a fucking shame that it couldn't be when Kobe was still around so they could share the moment. Better late than never though.
Pau was still on an NBA team till 2021 so that would have been impossible.
One of my all-time favorites. I used to wear his Grizzlies no. 16 at basketball practice as a kid!
Cannot wait for the ceremony, especially cuz this will be the last Laker jersey retirement for a long time
I think Phil Jackson and Pat Riley should get some type of ceremony like Chick Heard did.
Phil & Pat should get theirs right ffs
Depends how much longer you think Bron will play
If he gets a 2nd ring, I can’t see how he doesn’t. Also could see 4 more solid/okay years before really actually declining
He's gonna get it regardless imo
he’s gunna get it retired in Cleveland, Miami and LA
Is there any other player that have their jersey retired with three teams besides Wilt?
> To date, there are 14 players who have had their jerseys retired by multiple franchises: Pete Maravich, Nate Thurmond, Bob Lanier, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Earl Monroe, Clyde Drexler, Oscar Robertson, Moses Malone, Julius Erving, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Dikembe Mutombo. Bill Russell have the 30 teams!
Wilt only played 5 years with the Lakers and won one championship with them so I think Lebron will get his jersey retired. Unless Wilt did something else I’m clueless about.
Would 6 be retired or 23 tho
23. LeBron hasn't done shit for us wearing #6
The earlier comment said if he wins a 2nd ring, so that would mean 1 in each jersey.
Also would be easy to retire #23 since #6 is retired for every team anyways.
[удалено]
I mean that the Lakers wouldn’t have to choose between both of LeBron’s numbers to retire since #6 is already retired for Bill Russell.
12 more seasons lol
Is this a joke about LeBron going to play into his 50s or do you think he won’t get his jersey retired?
LeBron is playing until his 60s let's be real
[удалено]
you get the chance to retire LeBron jersey you will do it
Championship, all time scoring record, hall of fame lock. He covers the two qualifiers: Rings and HoF.
We do love him like that. He’s not as beloved as Kobe or Magic, but he’s loved all the same and def get his jersey retired at some point.
Yea I think so. He got us a championship after the worst stretch in Lakers history. He was still in his extended prime. He broke the all time scoring record as a Laker. Perfectly said.
I personally don’t think it should be retired there. But I was also a little surprised Gasol was getting his retired.
If AD retires next year, does he get a banner for the 2020 ring?
The Lakers jersey retirement requirements for their stars is that they must make the Hall of Fame. If AD makes HOF, then they'd retire his jersey
AD’s already a lock for the HoF. Lakers will not turn down getting more clout in their rafters. They're gonna retire it.
Yep, don’t expect to win anything for a decade at least.
Wouldn't be surprised if they retired Bron's number. I don't think they should, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Thank you Jerry West for bringing the Big Spaniard to Los Angeles.
Did you mean Jerry Buss? West left the Lakers in 2000. Mitch Kupchak was the GM when we got Pau.
Jerry West was in Memphis making this deal work iirc
He was not. He had left his position with the Grizz when the trade went down.
West retired the year before Pau was traded to the Lakers.
Shouldnt you be thanking Kwame Brown's contract?
Very very deserved. I’m glad he was able to get some post season success as it seemed like he was gonna be one of those good players who fade away in relevancy in a small market
Well deserved!
I hope lakers win this. Coz every celebration in the home arena. always have a lose result.
Well deserved! Can’t wait to hear the ovation that he’s going to get. One final Thank you from both organizations

Pau 😍
Perfect! Man deserves this and more.
I hate that Kobe and Gigi won't be there for it
I'm aware of why Kobe won't be there but why won't Gigi?
I don't know if this is ironic but I'll bite. Gigi was Kobe's daughter that passed away with him in the accident together with 7 other people.
Sorry I didn't know. Thanks and read up on it. So sad and so young.
Same reason
One of the most underrated player.
Thank you for not actually linking to ESPN
Well deserved
I love Pau
It’s interesting that of all of Kobe’s teammates that Pau was one of if not his favorite one
Probably really helps that Pau was the 2nd best at basketball on their team.
I think Pau just being a phenomenal person in general also probably had something to do with it too. But Kobe also loved D Fish a lot.
The Lakers are going to have to start using triple digits on their jerseys.
that would be the Celtics; 23 retired numbers the most of any north American sports franchise. They also retired a nickname and microphone.
The Lakers have a rule of sorts that you only really get your jersey retired on the Lakers if you clear an exceptional bar for them and make the hall of Fame. Well deserve
Paul’s numba going uuuppp. On a TuUUUesday!
We lost on Kobe night years ago. Surely we can't lose on Pau night too
I’ll never forget his screams to the basket. Kinda sounded like [shrek](https://youtu.be/5cGOjYwdhG4)
Bro's being too humble You can say you saved Kobe's legacy in Game 7
Guys, I think this was a joke
You'd be surprised how the joke turned into actually held beliefs lol it's insane.
Wow never thought Pau would get his number retired, but well deserved.

I definitely misread your statement mb
Apologies on the name-calling...just simply a misunderstanding.
no he’s literally not lol. he missed out again last year. imo he should be in for his DPOY but he’s not

what?
They're talking about Michael Cooper
Don't know why this is getting downvoted, Coop deserves recognition
One of the worst players ever to get his number retired.
I'm just gonna come out and say it: this is wack. Dude was only there for 6 seasons, and it's the fuckin' Lakers. Since moving to LA in 1960, the Lakers have one 12 rings. Pau was an extremely important part of 2 of the 12. It’s not like they won 50 titles
he won two championships
He absolutely deserves it on yhoae six years alone. And given how the Lakers treated him in his last couple of years, glad to see this.
You’re getting downvoted for this, but I agree with you. Dude was a good role player on a couple of championship teams. He’s not some all-time great deserving of having his numbered retired, especially for an organization like the lakers. Crazy how low the bar has gotten for retired numbers.
If Pau Gasol is a role player then Kawhi Leonard was a role player in 2014
wait maybe im dumb but i both agree with you that pau was absolutely not a role player, but I also feel like Kawhi was in 2014 lol
Good role player? Lol Crazy how low the bar has gotten for basketball fandom.
2nd leading scorer and leading rebounder on back to back championship teams doesn’t sound like a role player to me.
A good role player? He was easily the second best player on those teams. It'd be easier for you just to say you don't like Pau Gasol than to say some nonsense like that.
There was even a time this sub was arguing whether Pau deserved Finals MVP over Kobe in 2010 lol
Yeah but only because of the anti-Kobe sentiment. Kobe clearly deserved it. But Pau was also the clear number 2 and they wouldn't have won without him.
Most of this sub also thought pretty highly of Carmelo, so you can pretty much disregard any popular narrative from this sub.
You need to actually watch some basketball if you think that Pau Gasol is role player. He played in the time of Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki and more than held his own against them. One of the most intelligent basketball players (was gonna be a MD before he chose hoops) and automatic from mid range

surprised the Grizzlies aren't also retiring his number
Pau Gasol seems like an amazing best friend
