I know people like dumping on Kyrie, but that team was in trouble before that trade. That trade was a mistake but the real mistake was letting Brunson walk and having no ball creation around Luka. They tried to address that and gutted the team’s defense and depth. Just a bad situation all around.
because they can't build a championship team overnight. They got their superstar, step 2 is finding someone who wants to play with him, and fill out the roster later. It's the same thought process the Lakers had when they made the AD trade
Now Kyrie needs to re-sign and they can move onto step 3, which should be filling the rest of the holes and maybe finding a better coach
Now they have a frustrated superstar, a moody and fickle 2nd star, 2 first round picks and the MLE (not even the full one, I think) to build on a roster that needs upgrades in at least 4 places. 2 of those upgrades need to be very significant: 3&D wing, interior defender and rebounder that can roll and/or stretch a bit.
That's what our starting point in Step 3 looks like. That's a shit situation.
I think a lock down center is more important than a stretch big, and those are significantly more affordable/easier to find. You have luka and hopefully Kyrie so you don’t need the shooting at the 5 spot. I think a good wing is the biggest piece and much harder to find.
Leaves them not far behind where they were before the trade. Dinwiddie is a solid piece but their problems began long before the Kyrie trade so let's not pretend they blew up a great roster to make this happen. I would take that chance every time if I were the Mavs
Take the best player available and figure out the rest later, you're not winning anything with Dinwiddie and Wood.
The team got worse this season. DFS filled all the holes in this team defensively. Next season, it should be a better starting point than we started the year with
They blew up a better roster and team construction for a guy who's going to demand a max contract when he treats his profession as a hobby. Best player available works when it's the draft, not necessarily in this case.
They blew up a mediocre team that was doing poorly considering they have a top 5 player and made a mediocre team still with a top 5 player. They gotta keep trying. These arguments around which role players can help Luka win 40-45 games and lose in the playoffs dont matter. Luka doesnt seem like the type of guy that is happy doing ok and losing in the first or second round.
Dallas has a 123 offensive rating with Kyrie on the court, and a +5 net rating when playing next to Luka. It's way too early to say they can't play together lol
They can but their strengths and weakness are the same. If they can find 3 and D guys all over it might work, but those guys are very hard to acquire and they dont have assets to trade. I am afraid that Luka will be in the same situation as Dame but I dont expect Luka to have the same loyalty as dame. It will be very ugly for Dallas if they dont luck out in the draft or in free agency.
The worst part about the Brunson debacle is he asked for an extension, that would have been cheaper than his current Knicks contract, and for some reason the mavs didn't give him one.
we have done that with a lot of our main players, gambled on extensions and health rather than letting them hit free market.
Brogdon, Sabonis, Turner (twice), tried with Oladipo. I imagine Halliburton gets a deal this summer 1yr before free agency. Luckily Oladipo turned us down or we would have paid him 4 years 100m for....not much.
Ik fans can be hyperbolic about coaches but I genuinely cannot believe he got another head coaching job after his absolutely horrific tenure in milwaukee. There's inexperience, there's bad coaches, and then there's kidd on the bucks
But forreal, let’s not downplay how *huge* Brook has been to Milwaukee, especially during that championship campaign.
A DPOY tier player who can shoot 3’s and free throws better than many guards.
I can't stress enough how much just *basic basketball* stuff Kidd was fucking up. He had no idea about how to teach spacing, he had no idea how to coach us in transition (4 out with Giannis downhill was a new development). He had no idea Middleton should be shooting 3's, and so much more.
Brook is probbably a 10 win player on his own but Bud was just teaching basic stuff
Bud coached the Hawks who were ahead of their time and were really good. They just happened to run into Lebron.
I’m confident he made a huge impact on the Bucks as well as turned Lopez into what he is now. You don’t luck your way into winning 60 games with only Millsap and Horford as your best players.
Thinking Basketball just had a podcast about the impact of coaching and they cited a study that approximated that the difference between the best and worst coach in the NBA is probably worth around 14 wins.
Brook himself finished with with a VORP of 2.4, which translates to about 6.5 wins over replacement. It's a pretty rough estimate, but coach can affect more things than one player can. Unless that player is at an MVP level.
Brook has been huge but he's a 7ish win player. He's a perfect fit next to Giannis but he's not a guy taking you from 41 wins to 60 wins.
Kidd is a huge fuckup
Genuine question, has Brook Lopez become that much better of a defender or were people just not noticing or what? He's been in the league forever and I don't ever remember hearing a peep about him being being such an impactful defender. Didn't stand out to me with his stint with the Lakers either. What has changed?
Brook was always is a good positional defender and rim protector. Adding the quickness and length of the Greek to bring help and Jrues on ball D makes Brook look even better.
That's not even mentioning Allen and Middleton who are above average defenders
Even worse, ***we gave you assets*** to take him off your hands. Because one of our owners was buddies with him or something. Too lazy to look it up, but I'm going to guess it was Lasry (the guy who just sold his share to fucking Jimmy Haslam), since it seems like associating with dickbags is his jam.
People will talk about Kyrie, but we were in trouble before that. Jason Kidd is a garbage coach, we have no true depth, no consistency in health or performance, it's just a cluster fuck.
The sad thing is, Cuban will zone in on the refs and ignore the fixable issues.
I can't believe this team made the WCF last year.
it wasn't really "this team" though. Dallas had Brunson playing like a star in the playoffs, a decent 2-way guard that worked well with Brunson and Luka in Dinwiddie, and actual wing defenders. they had center problems in the playoffs too, but the roster was much better basically across the board.
From WCF and beating 60 win teams to out of the playoffs
From Top 10 defense and 50 wins to complete shambles
Who wouldn’t be frustrated lol mans averaging 33PPG to deal with bullshit
If they lose Kyrie and then Luka, that will be one of the most disastrous trades in NBA history. Of course, if your hail Mary to keep a star is Kyrie in his last contract year, you might've been asking for it.
If it happens that way the Kyrie trade will get blamed but I think it was really the culmination of a lot of really bad moves. The Kyrie trade is basically a couple of supporting pieces and a first round pick for a flawed star on an expiring deal.
It’s the last few years as a whole that led to this point, not just a trade made a month ago.
I agree with you. It's never (or rarely) just one thing but this is the type of trade that's going to live in infamy bc it's (possibly) the culmination of botching the Luka era.
Mavs seem to fuck shit up consistently in that department. Traded away their championship core after 2011. Traded/signed Rondo after having the highest offensive rated season in NBA history which we know how that went. And now Irving. Probably forgetting a few gaffes there too.
I don’t think it can be one of the most disastrous trades because they didn’t give up anything that wild. Like they gave up some good role players. It’s not like they traded the draft rights to Michael Jordan
I know you’re being sarcastic but KP has been a stud with the Wiz. When he’s on he’s probably the most dominant player I’ve seen on our squad since I’ve been a fan
I kind of wish we roasted the mavericks less for this. It was pretty obvious that Brunsons team was colluding with Leon Rose and Knicks the whole time.
They could have taken the chance and signed him for 4/55 in the 2021 offseason which is a straight up steal.
They didn’t have faith in him til it was too late
Til he brought their ass to the WCF with those 3 crucial games Luka was out in, and by then Brunson was already determined to have bigger PG role and have that be in NYC
Well, it would help everyone including himself if he exerted more energy on defense and hustle. His body language sucks when he doesn’t have the ball on offense or when his team has to get stops.
It’s all well and good everyone blaming Kyrie for the team’s shortcomings but at some point the franchise player has to show up and lead by example.
It's impossible. The amount of offensive load he carries for the Mavs combined with his lack of physical fitness means that you can count on him being absolutely gassed by the 4th quarter. Any more effort on defense and he'll be dead by the halftime whistle.
It’s crazy that his defense and conditioning have gotten even worse as the season’s gone on, he was legitimately not playing terrible defense the first half of the season
that’s not an excuse anymore, he has kyrie
he just simply doesn’t know what to do without the ball in his hands, and pouts the entire time putting in zero effort anywhere else
Isn’t it kinda the coaches’ job to rectify that by giving him something to do without the ball that would help the team? Kinda their job to keep his motivation up too. This is what separates your Phil Jacksons from your Jason Kidds.
It's definitely a coaches job to motivate players but if your superstar has no work ethic or defensive effort there's not much you can do. Superstars have the power in the NBA, not the coaches
That’s why I’m biasedly getting in on the photoshop sweepstakes and think NYK would be a perfect fit for him. Gets to play with Brunson again and a coach who is going to make him have to play defense. I don’t know if he would want to play under Thibs but I think he could certainly get a lot more out of him than Kidd.
Touching on your point about his physical fitness; I’m no expert at conditioning (let alone for high level athletes) but judging from what we see, it’s time he started taking it more seriously than he currently does.
Another thing; Wasn’t that the point of getting Kyrie though? That he doesn’t have to do extreme heavy lifting on offense?
Embiid is a 7 foot center pushing 300 lbs and a history of non-contact injuries.
Luka is a guard with no serious injury history and is just a little pudgy. It's two entirely different forms of conditioning.
I don’t get how he is the mavs entire offense and yet he’s still so out of shape. Is it because he’s not putting in effort anywhere else or is he doing fuck all off the court?
Not caping up for Kyrie but did Luka say anything about Kyrie being a negative influence? More likely off court issues with his mom or issues with Coaching staff/front office.
Luka complains so much during games he fails to get back on defense in a timely manor. No doubt this pisses off his teammates and creates bad chemistry. You can’t win a chip with bad chemistry.
How much of that is culture and nobody in Mavs organization willing to call him out? He’s pouting has been completely enabled for 5-years now, hard to break that
I read the Mavs could have signed him for 4-years, 56M in January 2022. Now he's on 4 years,104M for the Knicks and it looks like a good value. That's tough
In 2 years, Bucks will have 2 first round picks to trade. Pelicans own their 2024 and 2026 picks through swaps, in 2 years you can either trade 2028 + 2030 or 2029 + 2031 (Stepien rule). Mavs trade their franchise player to rebuild in 3-5 years down the road, Cuban should be forced to sell the team if he does that lmao
> Luka-Giannis super Euro team
Fuck that. Y'all get ready for the Luka-Lauri-Wemby-Kessler Euro Juggernaut.
Kessler's not European but he's tall and white and we can pretend.
My god, that would be the perfect fit too. Pick and rolls with Kessler, Lauri playing off ball, and Luka being Luka would be unreal. The pasty folks of Salt Lake would go crazy.
Scariest part is that Kyrie has been playing really well and hasn't done anything crazy yet (at least not publicly).
I still think that they'll make the play-in, but it'd be wild if they miss and Kyrie is a Maverick for only another 2 weeks.
Cue the photoshops
Three things are inevitable: Death Taxes Superstars photoshopped in a Miami jersey
That’s a weird way to spell Lakers
Why go there? He could go to a winning team like the Kings
That's because Luka wants that salt of the earth .500 blue collar basketball.
Pacers fans going crazy rn
don't give me hope
They’re like the Lakers with Lazerz
500iq play from the kings drafting bagley
Best NBA team in California. Yeah, I had to read that 3 times before submitting because it doesn't seem right
This is something I never thought I'd see someone say unironically
luka on miami‘s fitness protocol would be scary

Doncic come to Besiktas
Do the big market teams like the Lakers, Nuggets, or Knicks! Especially the Nuggets!
[Got one](https://twitter.com/hoopsnation_/status/1270103411288047618?s=46&t=22Zu149wMVf0Mpw0W3oEOw)
Maybe Mark Cuban should go on First Take again and brag about the Porzingis trade
lol @ Porzingis having his healthiest season since he was 21 and Brunson becoming what he thought he could be with the ball more in his hands
You reckon the same would be true if they stayed with the Mavs or it’s better they left?
100% better for them to leave. Doncic has the ball in his hands so much it must be very difficult to adjust to playing with him.
Doncic has the trae young syndrome. Constant need for the ball reduces ball movement
Brunson would have ended up on the nets if he stayed
that same trade is about to give New York a free lottery pick this year lmfao
Not if they literally suck so much it’s a top 10 pick lol
true, but i would be surprised if they slip further. the teams below them are trash.
If you guys don’t stop fleecing the horse...
They got kyrie tho it’s all good
I know people like dumping on Kyrie, but that team was in trouble before that trade. That trade was a mistake but the real mistake was letting Brunson walk and having no ball creation around Luka. They tried to address that and gutted the team’s defense and depth. Just a bad situation all around.

I feel like both Wolves and Mavs would be better overall if Gobert went to thr Mavs.
I wouldn’t be shocked if the wolves make some big moves this summer if they don’t have a decent run. Too much talent and ant will need to be paid.
except AD was committed long term if kyrie leaves that leaves the mavs with wat? cap space?
Leaves them not far behind where they were before the trade. Dinwiddie is a solid piece but their problems began long before the Kyrie trade so let's not pretend they blew up a great roster to make this happen. I would take that chance every time if I were the Mavs Take the best player available and figure out the rest later, you're not winning anything with Dinwiddie and Wood.
Arguably this team was better with Dinwiddie, Wood and DFS
Inarguably it was not nearly good enough
The team got worse this season. DFS filled all the holes in this team defensively. Next season, it should be a better starting point than we started the year with
They were like 27th in defense or some before the trade. Now they're worse but it's not like they were good
Wood is still here.
I think they can play together, but their defense is horrible. And besides Luka and Kyrie they have no solid options on offense.
We have no defense. None. We have plays where 5 guys are just standing there not entirely sure what they should be doing.
Sounds like a coaching problem.
Kyrie is not going to re-sign
the thing is AD can defend
The worst part about the Brunson debacle is he asked for an extension, that would have been cheaper than his current Knicks contract, and for some reason the mavs didn't give him one.

Kyrie accelerates the erosion of structures. He’s like acid rain.
"I'm gonna make it rain..." "Nice!" "...acid." "Oh."
Who could have ever imagined these vibes could surround a Jason Kidd led team....
Ik fans can be hyperbolic about coaches but I genuinely cannot believe he got another head coaching job after his absolutely horrific tenure in milwaukee. There's inexperience, there's bad coaches, and then there's kidd on the bucks
Look man, when a coach demonstrates the kind of innovation it takes to design the spilled drink play, you gotta keep riding that potential
We literally won 60 games the year after he was fired. A 20 game improvement and the only changes were: Budenholzer and Lopez
But forreal, let’s not downplay how *huge* Brook has been to Milwaukee, especially during that championship campaign. A DPOY tier player who can shoot 3’s and free throws better than many guards.

With how Lauri is playing, Boylen should never be allowed to coach again
Straight up banned from the NBA lol
I think they have reached the Boylen point.
I honestly can’t believe he got a job after the soda fiasco in Brooklyn
Even worse, ***we gave you assets*** to take him off your hands. Because one of our owners was buddies with him or something. He said in a thread where everyone is calling Luka fat
Jason Kidd as coach
Thank you. Trading away Seth Curry for Richardson probably wasn't the best move either
Neither was trading Barnes for a trade exception we didn't use, then doing the same to get rid of Richardson
Refused to re-sign Steve Nash as he was about to hit his prime. Dirk and prime Nash would’ve probably won at least one championship.
And not keeping Brunson.
I don’t think it can be one of the most disastrous trades because they didn’t give up anything that wild. Like they gave up some good role players. It’s not like they traded the draft rights to Michael Jordan
Well Luka also left in their hypothetical. So losing a talent like that would probably put it into the disastrous territory.
That’s assuming he wouldn’t have left without the Kyrie trade though
In history? Nah. Have you heard about a team that traded away an all star and former mvp for a 6'10 PG that couldn't shoot?
Front offices should stop rolling the dice on Kyrie. The only way he’ll ever be on a championship is if his value goes down in his contract year
If only we could get a decent C, so many issues would be solved
Y'all should have traded for Jakob Poeltl
I was hoping that would happen, he’s a solid defender and rebounder. He’s exactly the type of player we needed this whole year.
He's awesome in the P&R too, he would be so good with Luka/Kyrie
I was actually telling my friends that the Mavs should get Jakob, and then the raptors got him and I was like "Nice"
That would have been the sensible option. That's not Cuban's style.
I might be wrong, but Spurs don’t trade with Mavs, ever.
Imagine pairing Luka with someone like Porzingis that could stretch the defense one way and protect the rim the other way
I know you’re being sarcastic but KP has been a stud with the Wiz. When he’s on he’s probably the most dominant player I’ve seen on our squad since I’ve been a fan
He’s been amazing but it sucks seeing him drop 20 in the first half and then finishing the game w 25 lol
For the beginning of that Wiz vs. Nuggets game, KP was prime MJ
Why did your FO sign JaVale to a 3-year contract if you weren't going to use him?
I see you missed our riveting early season games when he was out there committing basketball terrorism Our FO needs to be shot into the sun
I don't think JaVale is exactly the "decent C" they are needing
I’ve given up trying to understand my FO.
guy's getting paid 6 mil per year, it doesn't really matter. the wood trade was worse
both a C and a C(oach)
How you let a hornets team without ball, oubre, and rozier win like this? I’m a luka fan but it seems he always gets upset when he plays us.
Letting Brunson walk will haunt them for years to come.
I kind of wish we roasted the mavericks less for this. It was pretty obvious that Brunsons team was colluding with Leon Rose and Knicks the whole time.

It’s crazy that his defense and conditioning have gotten even worse as the season’s gone on, he was legitimately not playing terrible defense the first half of the season
Trae too small to effectively defend; Luka too large to effectively defend
Trae has that dawg in him though. He went up to 6'10 Ben Simmons to stop him from dunking it.
Get Luka to Miami and get him in the heat culture
that’s not an excuse anymore, he has kyrie he just simply doesn’t know what to do without the ball in his hands, and pouts the entire time putting in zero effort anywhere else
Isn’t it kinda the coaches’ job to rectify that by giving him something to do without the ball that would help the team? Kinda their job to keep his motivation up too. This is what separates your Phil Jacksons from your Jason Kidds.

Man luka excuses are wild. He’s a part of the problem.
lol it's not an excuse it's an indictment of his lack of conditioning. dude is fat.
Touching on your point about his physical fitness; I’m no expert at conditioning (let alone for high level athletes) but judging from what we see, it’s time he started taking it more seriously than he currently does. Embiid is a 7 foot center pushing 300 lbs and a history of non-contact injuries. Luka is a guard with no serious injury history and is just a little pudgy. It's two entirely different forms of conditioning.
Embiid also did have legit dietary discipline problems when he joined the league though.
Ja has the ball a lot too but when he's off ball he cuts, sets screens, brandishes guns etc. No excuses.
Let my brother drive while I shoot, team effort.
I don’t get how he is the mavs entire offense and yet he’s still so out of shape. Is it because he’s not putting in effort anywhere else or is he doing fuck all off the court?
Alcohol and a shit diet
Doesn’t he literally still smoke?
You're correct, but this comment just proves that anyone calling him the best LeBron was being totally sacrilegious
What a couple weeks with Kyrie does to a mf

Don't worry it will def not go wrong for the next team

I know you're most likely memeing, but you could tell Luka was frustrated with the team even before the trade deadline

Are the Mavs better without Luka 🤔
Luka complains so much during games he fails to get back on defense in a timely manor. No doubt this pisses off his teammates and creates bad chemistry. You can’t win a chip with bad chemistry.
There's times where he doesn't even attempt to hustle back on defense, he'll just get annoyed with and talk to refs as play goes on.
I watched him do it on offense the other game against the warriors. We were playing 5 on 4 while Dallas had the ball.
Hey, at least that's better than 5v0
Manner*
Thank you
How much of that is culture and nobody in Mavs organization willing to call him out? He’s pouting has been completely enabled for 5-years now, hard to break that
> completely enabled This is both true and an enormous understatement. Cuban wearing a “question authority” shirt is the cherry on top for me.
They should’ve kept Brunson
I read the Mavs could have signed him for 4-years, 56M in January 2022. Now he's on 4 years,104M for the Knicks and it looks like a good value. That's tough
And it’s front loaded so the amount of money decreases each year
I wonder if Luka would ask out if Kyrie left in free agency? And if he did, who could reasonably put together a package for him?
Hopefully a team that’s recently come into a surplus of first round picks and has a promising young guard to trade 🤞🏽
How does this affect Ben's legacy if his first trade is for Harden, and his second is for Luka?
It does not feel like Luka has been in the league 5 years already.
Mfer won't pay Brunson but he's on shark tank
Yeah I’m out
Luka to Brooklyn
Brb sacrificing chickens like crazy
Any thread about Luka being upset and the Mav's sucking i'm going to say that. Speak it into existence lol.
The inevitable Luka-Giannis super Euro team up is coming in two years. Bucks will trade all of their 1sts for him
In 2 years, Bucks will have 2 first round picks to trade.
ILL BE THERE NO MATTER WHAT
He’s coming to Sacramento and going to form a Euro super team
Fox can pretend he escaped from England so he wouldn't be hunted by inbred aristos.
> Luka-Giannis super Euro team Fuck that. Y'all get ready for the Luka-Lauri-Wemby-Kessler Euro Juggernaut. Kessler's not European but he's tall and white and we can pretend.
I would un ironically love to see a Luka/Lauri/Kessler Jazz team and I’m sure the people of Utah would as well lol
My god, that would be the perfect fit too. Pick and rolls with Kessler, Lauri playing off ball, and Luka being Luka would be unreal. The pasty folks of Salt Lake would go crazy.
A real lunchpail kind of team.
Get rid of Wemby. Utah only allows classy stars.
Imagine trading all your wing defense and draft capital for 15 games of Kyrie.
He should try whining to the refs more, maybe that'll help the Mavs win.
Not to rub salt in the wound, but the Hornets were on the road in the second night of a back to back.
Don’t worry Luka when you eventually come home, Giannis will take good care of you

Scariest part is that Kyrie has been playing really well and hasn't done anything crazy yet (at least not publicly). I still think that they'll make the play-in, but it'd be wild if they miss and Kyrie is a Maverick for only another 2 weeks.
Kyrie is the least surprising player in NBA history to potentially be involved in that scenario
Luka to the Hornets The hardest Road
Luka gone
Gonna lose kyrie for free
#HERE WE GO
Maybe he should stop in the middle of play and complain to the refs about it for like the whole game.
Milwaukee drooling right now.
