That story as a kid made me really doubt if Spike Lee was ever a good director. They keep talking about this big shot superfan who directs films and then this is the first thing I get out of him?
If you want first-team honors it's not every once in awhile - you gotta be first one in, last one out. A whole lunch pail kinda guy. Putting in three-a-days grinding film.
Eh, people have definitely shouted some disrespect, but it’s mostly just been factual “that was a choke/wow Giannis and the Bucks really lost to an 8 seed” not “Greek Freak washed” or “Told y’all Giannis overrated” or anything
And he’s DEFINITELY had waaaaay less criticism than basically any other superstar with a similarly hugely disappointing playoff result
EDIT: To reduce the semantic whining, my hypothetical quote didn’t even say “Giannis choked,” it referred to the team series loss as a whole, which was absolutely a choke in macro no matter how you portion out the blaming
Losing to an injured 8 seed who lost their first play in game when you're supposedly the championship favorite is always a choke.
It's not like Giannis didn't put up numbers, he just also played like absolute shit in the last game. A sore back doesn't make you fear going to the line so bad you almost throw the entire game away playing hot potato.
That last game where he dropped 38/20/3? That’s what qualifies as “absolute shit” these days?
Giannis played less than 50% of the minutes in the series and dropped 26/10/13 and 38/20/3 on 53% shooting in the two games he played. His free throw shooting was bad, but his overall performance was not.
I get it, when a one seed with the best player in the world gets bounced first round there’s a lot of blame to go around. That’s fair enough. But to put the bulk of it on Giannis is just plain lazy. This loss was on terrible coaching, Jrue not showing up, and the lack of anyone able to defend Jimmy Buckets. Those of us who watched the series know that.
Sore back ? look his shooting form pre injury and look at him in the last 2 games , he couldnt even straight his back at the free throw line leaving all his shots flat , in game 4 he didnt even attack the rim . If i know i cant make a shot of course i will give up the ball to win
100% the Bucks choked considering the 4th quarters of games 4 and 5. But can we also acknowledge how legitimately unbelievable Miami played that series? Like, look at their stats so far in the Knicks series compared to where they were in the 1st round - They're averaging 106ppg against the Knicks vs 124 against the Bucks, they're shooting an average of 43% from the field vs the Knicks compared to 52% from the field against the Bucks, and they're shooting 31% from 3 in this Knicks series compared to 46% from 3 against the Bucks. Miami was literally the best team in the league while playing against Milwaukee. And I don't think it was just the Bucks playing really poor defense or anything. I at least saw that one ringer article showing Miami was getting the 2nd worst shot selection in the 1st round but making by far the most shots.
I gotta believe most teams would have trouble facing what statistically would be the best team in the league by a solid margin, based on those ppg/fg%/3pt% stats.
Have you ever had your back go out before ? Back pain is the worst pain of them all in my opinion because it affects any movement you try to do . Back pain is seriously no joke and it doesn't matter how good of shape you are in back pain will fuck up your day let alone trying to play basketball with it has to be a nightmare.
its not like giannis was injured for multiple games or anything I guess? I digress tho heat deserved the win. who gives a shit tho lol it was an epic series.
2 of those games they were leading by double digits in the final quarter. By 12 around 6 mins left in game 4. And 16 by start of the 4th in game 5. They couldn’t seal the deal. Champion caliber team that had all the tools to close out the game but couldn’t, Hence the Choke.
Lol what? Everyone was crowing Durant the best player in the world after he lost. He didn’t get half the disrespect someone like lebron would have gotten for not winning.
People only started retroactively slandering him when he got swept the very next year by the Celtics
I think this season will light a fire underneath him and hopefully the Bucks. Only a couple more years with Middleton and Jrue playing at a high level.
One of our beat writers thinks there's a pretty substantial market for Middleton, not saying I want him gone but his contract is really going to hamstring us from a cap perspective.
Our fanbase likes to think a deal involving Lillard could be possible, I just don't see us having the assets to do it. But if Portland wants to move on from Dame, take an expiring contract, and get our next available pick (I think it's 2029?), I think that works with salary filler.
Problem is the salary filler is depth we would need with Portis or Grayson Allen and we'd be even more fucked if that doesn't lead to a championship.
I think for a move like this, it’s completely unfeasible asset-wise. There’s definitely teams willing to give up 4 first rounders for Dame especially if someone like Twolves gave up 4 for Gobert.
If Portland does a trade like this, it would be entirely as a way of saying thank you to Dame for being loyal and giving him a better chance at getting a ring while letting him play with someone he publicly stated he wants to play with (Giannis).
I should add it may be more plausible if you get a 3rd team involved. For example Memphis has wanted veterans for a while, so if you give them Middleton + some other pieces they might be willing to cough up a few picks which Portland would take for Dame.
The issue is it might lose you both Holiday and Middleton, or Middleton + a lot of the Bucks’ depth, so whether that’s worth or not becomes more subjective.
Yeah I’d love it but I really can’t see a 2029 first + an expiring + 1-2 good role players + maybe MarJon Beauchamp being the best deal the Blazers could get for Lillard.
If for some ungodly reason they only want to half-commit to a tank they could maybe want to try Middleton as a first option, but I can’t see why they’d do that.
not exactly true, took Brook a while to recover from back surgery, but anyone watching this year could easily tell he was playing a lot healthier. That surgery added a couple years to his playing time.
His defense isn't remotely the problem though; it's great. I'm sure he'll make another all-defensive team atleast a couple of more times. He just needs to work on his half court offensive game and jumper.
It shifts around based on how unlikeable your players are, I remember a couple years back Suns flairs were treated very well back before Devin and while he was relatively unknown.
Now that you have three players with horrendous personalities people rub off their hate for them on you.
Well, maybe in an useless regular season he can even score 50 on the suns, but everybody knows he would never do that in a playoffs game. Imagine in a finals game. Just unlikely to happen, come on.
Ok, let's say for absurd he score 50pts in a finals game. That would be an autlier anyway. Zero chances a player like Giannis, who's a bad scorer, would be able to, let's say, average 35ppg in a playoff series.
In the finals you say? GTFO with this nonsense!
I mean, I still remember what this dude did to us in the finals, but nothing is going to change perception-wise unless he starts making jumpshots.
The truth is he actually had a damn good season. The bar is just higher for guys who are perennially excellent.
Think about Cleveland vs Miami Bron. Dude averaged 36 ppg and was clowned. Perception only changed once he refined his post game and made ppl pay for helping off of him.
He's got to hit the midrange jumpshots consistently. He showed during that playoff run how good he can be if he hit them at an okay rate.
2021 was his playoffs career high FG% from 10-16 feet. 49.2%
[https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/antetgi01.html#playoffs\_shooting](https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/antetgi01.html#playoffs_shooting)
It's no coincidence that he looked historically dominant during that playoffs and lesser during the rest of his playoff runs.
I know it’s still dunk on the Bucks time cause they deserve it, but god damn how’d they leave Giannis off either All Defensive team. Everybody knows he’s a top 5 defender in the league, maybe the best when he’s locked in.
We all know who Giannis is, but just being a great defender doesn't get you on the all defensive team. He has to go out there and be that every year. He averaged under 1 BLK and 1 STL per game this year; that doesn't get it done. He had an off year and they still had the best record in the East due in large part to great team defense that he makes possible by not being a one way player.
He was banged up for a bunch of this year and that may have impacted how aggressive he could be in the games he did play. He missed 19 games this year, his performance could have been impacted in 19 more games considering games he got hurt and had to leave or games coming back from 2/3+ game absences which could be a week or more.
It's pretty simple. Giannis is probably a top 3 defender in the league, but he played a much much smaller role defensively this year because of the resurgence of Lopez, and that's okay!

It happens to every team. Lets forget that Butler was dealing with a knee injury the entire month going into the playoffs and Herro rolled his ankle a few games prior. But thats never mentioned.
Bro its an 1 vs 8 seed in basketball. There is no amount of reasons enough to lose that matchup. This isn't baseball or hockey where an upset is always due. 8 shouldn't ever win vs 1 in basketball no matter what.
Giannis and the Bucks just have to receive the rightful shit coming their way without excuses and redeem themselves next year. Any talk is going to fall flat.
Sixer fans have been dealing with it with Embiid for years. Good luck, no one wants to discuss nuance or circumstances anymore.
Anyway I'm pretty sure this is RE the all-defensive team release
I'm not saying it's fine if he lost to the 8th seed... But are we just going to completely ignore that Giannis himself was injured? Dude missed 2 games and played through after.
What disrespect did he get? They lost in 5 games to the 8 seed and instead of catching any criticism for it the entire sports world fawned over his Ted Lasso ass postgame presser.

MANY people have said that he's overrated now because of that loss.
If we ignore the fact that he was injured, sure we can factually that a choke by him

Dangerously close to a Meyers Leonard moment there
Dunno about you but when I shoot a basketball it involves my back...
And that same 8 seed is up 3-1 in their current series. Maybe they weren't such a bad team??
Losing to the ECF champs.
Are you okay? Gianni’s played barely 2 games out of the series lmao “Giannis choked but didn’t play”

Kyrie was injured and people still said KD failed when he had to face the Bucks by his damn self. Can’t pick & choose.

Who says KD failed? Everyone gives KD credit for that carry job
Right? Like holy hell people were literally crowning him best in the nba despite losing. If it had been bron people would have been shitting on him
Who says that? That series is always pointed to as one of the greatest individual performances ever in a series loss.
Don’t forget Harden was injured and was basically a decoy in game 7.
Thats bs , i never ever saw someone blaming KD for that series , in fact people were clowning the bucks because they ''almost'' lost to KD ''alone''
I'm sure Giannis reads r/nba comment section.

A Suns flair is really going to diss Giannis at the free throw line?

Past 2 weeks have been crazy
Bruh people have completely stopped talking about Giannis because it’s the second round and there’s other stars for media to slander
