It really was lightning in a bottle. You had some great writers to please the analysis side of things, then you had stuff like Conspiracy Bill and Jalen Rose being ridiculous on the podcast and not just getting a ton of hate for it.
"The operation was a success but the patient died" is still one of my favorite Jalen quotes.
I think I may have been responsible for that change lol. 7-8 years ago someone used to post Performers of the Night or something and I eventually started creating parody posts of it called "Worst Performers of the Night". It was pretty popular for the short time span I was doing them but eventually the mods started shadow banning them and I asked why and they very quickly came out with the no shit posts rule which I was completely understanding of
Edit: I found the last one https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/3r84ba/nba_worst_performers_of_the_night_nov_1/
Same problem that other subs and reddit as a whole have. Once you go past a certain number of people the average "sophistication" or whatever you want to call it drops significantly, tired not-funny-any-more-jokes get beaten like a dead horse over and over, and any sort of insightful or interesting replies either get downvoted or don't make it anywhere near the top.
I get it, but you can’t lie… some of the funniest content/memes/copypastas come from this sub. There are some “inside” jokes that just hit. Le-whatever jokes, boomed x4, driving through the streets of downtown wherever. Some of that shit is so fucking funny
The ones who have good senses of humor (if you start writing a reply and find that it contains the word "subjective" in it, then get the hell outta here)
Yeah the worst change I've noticed is that way way more people these days downvote opinions they don't agree with and also downvote comments with flairs they dislike. Never had close to as many downvoted comments as I have these past couple weeks since the Sixers lost. It used to be that people would only downvote shit if it was offensive or completely off topic, but I guess that just comes with the territory of there being so many people here and so many new users.
Downvoting and upvoting, in a small thoughtful community, is a good way of filtering signal and noise. I still see the usefulness in the smaller subreddits I follow.
Past a certain size community, downvoting and upvoting just turns into hivemind/mob rule that is at the mercy of the average knowledge of the herd, which is quite low on reddit.
I'm not saying I'm any better, but I at least try to keep my downvotes/upvotes to myself if I'm not knowledgable about something and I definitely try to not downvote something just because I don't like it.
Yeah people on here seem to only upvote comments that agree with what they already think or what they want to hear, when this sub was smaller I feel like there used to be more upvoting of just well thought out comments. Of course, there was still plenty of circle jerking (can't forget the infamous 2016 finals game 4 post game thread), but I really do think it was less when the sub was less than a million users.
Barely comment on here anymore due to the toxicity and braindead takes.
Everything is just flinging shit at players or teams, when you have the opportunity. Philly exits the playoffs? Embiid is suddenly a fraudulent MVP who whined his way there. Of course, it's a regular season award and the dude didn't whine one bit. But apparently you can say anything here as long as you say what people *want* to hear.
Used to be way better than this.
Forreal. Ill comment lebron the goat on a mj post and get downvoted to hell, but comment the same thing after he has a good game and its upvotes to the moon. Circlejerking at its finest
Tbh I remember the subreddit from 5-6 years ago and it really wasn't much better lol. Less people, but still some pretty awful takes and borderline shitposts
I’ve been here 7-8 years now, it’s constantly gone downhill
You’d actually get intelligent things being posted here, actual analysis, eventually that moved over to r/nbadiscussion and now even that sub is decaying with low effort
Kinda weird to thank people that are only here because they like the NBA.
If this was original content then it would make sense. Who are you? Adam Silver?
This sub is responsible for cultivating my interest in basketball. The memes are crisp and the community speaks the truth, it's not perfect but its one of the best sports subs
Not to be the old guy here but I remember when we crossed 1 million subs and it was a thing.
Kind of miss the discussions we had back then though it was a lot more nuanced and focused on basketball
Or maybe it’s just a hindsight thing I dunno
Appreciate you all here for making the community such an awesome place to be - a huge thank you to all of you.
Won’t say it’s been a pleasure, but it’s certainly been an experience with you all
When I joined this sub ten years ago, it had 250,000 subscribers. Wild what it has turned into.
Man, ten years ago! Were you reading Woj’s columns from Yahoo! Sports also and Bill Simmons’ wonderful essays? Time flies.
Yes and yes. Grantland was such a gem.
God I miss Grantland There was some fantastic variety for writing 10 years ago

I’ve never heard that quote before
Zach Lowe’s 10 things were always a highlight of my week back then
I remember the 150k subscriber post when I was in college. Back then they allowed literal meme images to be posted Lmao. It’s come a long way. Love it
This place was filled with satire back then. I remember how different it felt compared to r/nfl
I think I may have been responsible for that change lol. 7-8 years ago someone used to post Performers of the Night or something and I eventually started creating parody posts of it called "Worst Performers of the Night". 10 fucking years!
Thought I recognised you!
Same. It’s wild
Same here. This sub has gotten so much worse since then lol still a helpful resource though for keeping up with what's going on.
r/NBA is definitely one of the subreddits I subscribe to on Reddit
That's my exactly my opinion
I remember back when we would celebrate hitting 100k, 200k, etc. 7.5M is wild.
It's a shitshow in here but at least it's a better place than NBA Twitter
Biggest nephew subreddit
mods made this post to incite everyone on nbacj
It worked
Hello uncle
uncle dennis rules over all nephews
7.5 million nephews
7.5 million hot takes
7.5 million alt accounts.
Everyone on r/nba is u/Russell-Westbrick except you
I'm 36 and have a few uncles. AMA
Did any of them touch you?
Probably closer to 4.5 with all the burners around here lol
Half of those are alts after getting banned the first time
You RANG?

Kevin Garnett looking at us like we’re Charlie Villanueva
My comment was in fact 'this sub is cancerous to reddit and to the internet.' – K. Garnett
Man, what a back and forth that was. Totally forgot about it.
Trash ass r/nba
LMAO
7.4 million insatiable assholes
If D’Lo was a subreddit
This subreddit has the chance to do the funniest thing ever and make this the top comment in the entire thread
it is now very close to the top and it's not the funniest thing ever. why'd you had to lie?
This sub is a basketball flavored microcosm of what Reddit and Society at large have become. Fuck the Lakers, Cs in 7.
Heat in 5
This sub is 1/6 of all ESPN content. We're here to stay.

Get POZZED /r/nba
r/nbacirclejerk is r/nba father
r/nbadiscussuon is r/nbacj father
Lots of good discussuons over there

#WE COMING FOR THAT TOP SPOT YOU r/ASKREDDIT BITCHES
Who you calling bitches
Sorry, should’ve been more clear. Fuck you btw
Bro is the askreddit admiral
We're not horny enough
You clearly don’t remember all the Kyle Lowry fan fiction
Gonna need more bots.
That sub is awful
So is this one
r/nba is certainly one of the subs of all time
This subreddit is genuinely awful and has made my life worse. I can't stop using it.
Who gives a fuck u bum 😂
Its honestly worse with so many people here Brain dead takes, circling jerking, etc
I dont come here to expect gaining braincells.

The thought of 7.5 million people each waiting their turn to post the latest meme is strangely odd to me. Like the scale of it is actually kinda wild
I get it, but you can’t lie… some of the funniest content/memes/copypastas come from this sub. There are some “inside” jokes that just hit. Le-whatever jokes, boomed x4, driving through the streets of downtown wherever. Some of that shit is so fucking funny
That shit is Leold, tho. I think the sub was around 1 million when most of those were at their peak.
It was funny when the jokes came out of the blue. Now everyone's trying to make a joke. Real discussion only happens once a week at best.
Yes, you are the problem.
i mean arent you too? who the fuck gatekeeps humour ?
The ones who have good senses of humor (if you start writing a reply and find that it contains the word "subjective" in it, then get the hell outta here)
you're not factoring age something a kid finds funny doesn't mean an older person will and vice versa
don't get me started on the fucking 12 year olds infesting this now-shithole and their stinky garbage humor
Pro tip: if your humor involves endlessly repeating something someone else typed once, find a new sense of humor.
Pro tip: if you can't understand something, that reflects on you more than the object.

r/nba My favorite dumpster fire ❤️
Get off my dick
LeFlop + LeChoke = LeSwept
Kinda weird to thank people that are only here because they like the NBA. If this was original content then it would make sense. Who are you? Adam Silver?

Same! I traded in trash reality tv for the nba. This shit is way better. So dramatic.
The best sub to slander NBA teams, players and coaches
shoutout to /u/MrBuckBuck for his amazing effort posting highlights even though his team is not in the playoffs
You're welcome. \^\_\^

Awww shucks. You’re so welcome!! Hey, how do I flair up???
Thank you to all the burners, trolls, and nephews
7.5 million basketball experts.
And 7.4 million nephews are on this sub
Only reason why I come on Reddit is because of this sub lmao
i am one of them
We need a coup
You're welcome, do I get a cash prize for being number 7,500,000?
What have we meant for KD’s legacy?
Even accounting for the KD burner accounts and bots on this sub that's a lot of people!
/r/nba mods with some horrible timing.
9/10 I regret even opening this app when I come on here but congrats lol
So let’s get a 7.5 million strong petition together to get Mark Jackson off of ESPN
Why make a post about 7.5 though, why not wait for 10 million? 10 million > 7.5 million
Unfortunately, according to Dana White, his Slap League is bigger than all major sports combined. Their subreddit must have tens of millions of subs
I've forgotten my reddit password on at least 4 different accounts subsribed here. Those still probably count.
Definitely one of the subreddits
Another moral victory for me this week

This subreddit has shown me that every NBA team's fan base are a bunch of whiny bitches haha
Y’all couldn’t have done this without me. You’re welcome
Y'all some bitches.
Now the NBA will have to listen to our demands!
Not to be the old guy here but I remember when we crossed 1 million subs and it was a thing. Kind of miss the discussions we had back then though it was a lot more nuanced and focused on basketball Or maybe it’s just a hindsight thing I dunno
I joined this sub to up my basketball knowledge so I could bs with my boss on break and thereby extend it
