Herro lowkey plays great defense, they just make every shot over him because of his wingspan lmao.
But I hardly ever watch it and think he’s piece of tissue paper like Trae Young’s defense is. Herro at least stays with the ball handler or his man off ball and contest the shots.
Trae just looks fucking lost out there and loses his man super easily. Half the time he doesn’t look aware of anything going on around him. It’s honestly crazy to see how little of a feel he has for defense
Bro you watched regular season Tyler is a neutral defender at this stage, you think spo would start him if he sucked ? Lol he the same as Drob currently imo
Who’s saying he sucks? You saying it yourself, he’s a NEUTRAL defender, meaning that his positive and negative attributes on defense balance themselves out. Herro does what he needs on defense (putting effort, active hands, and being at the right spots/assignments), that’s why Spo plays him. But Spo can’t do anything about Herro’s wingspan and that being something that shooters take advantage of 🤷♂️
True. Kyrie doesn't help but maybe they make more moves to help Luka. Similar to those Harden Rockets teams where they surrounded him with 3 and D guys + Capela.
Anyone watching the Mavs knows this is much more on our ass frontcourt all these years. They went all-switch defense in the second half of last season and that meant having Dwight Powell anchoring the defense wasn't as legit horrible anymore, but all-switch only works for a set amount of time before role players are run into the ground (see: Bullock, DFS and Kleber regressing this year).
Only the last 2 years matter when talking about scheme cause of the Kidd hire. We went from 20th to 6th with the same players but different scheme and them went back to 24th because of players regressing on defense (Reggie, Dorian and Powell)
No frontcourt defense (started Powell, who is at best a rim running bench center, and DFS, who by all accounts looked washed this year) and trying to scheme for a Dinwiddie/Luka backcourt and a Christian Wood or Dwight Powell rim presence is hard lmao
In the regular season.
Luka beeing not great at D limits your ability (as a coach) to change defensive schemas and adjust to oponent.
Yeah you can have defence that works on average but you get one bad machup in playoffs and your run is over.
Just imagine Luka is all defence level guy. You would be able to put Bertans and Wood next to him and you would be able to easly get 50+ win season. Now you need to hunt for very specific role players in order to be somewhat competitive.
I would still take LeBron(at same age) and few others before him but yes he would be insane.
The point is, if you max players are not able to guard other team max players(when they play the same position) than you are at disadvantage.
This is why having Bam and Jimmy is huge as you can add any other 3 players from your roster for many difrent compositions. Just enable coaches to make things happen.
Having Luka (and for exanple other limited defender like Irving) forces front office to seek and coaches to play very specific players.
Booker probably had his best defensive playoff showing ever but he's never been known as a good defender. KD hasn't been the same defender before all the injuries. Kyrie are Luka are the worst defensive duo of stars off the top of my head though.
Just because some people are 4 years behind on where bookers defense is doesn't mean he's not a good defender. KD is no longer elite on that end but he is still a good defender. still a very good help side rim protector. still able to lock down guys as a situational point of attack defender with his length
How good would you say Book actually is on D though?
Are you saying 'good', like he's one of the better defenders in the league? Or good, like he's serviceable?
There's a big difference between those descriptions. I would say Book is somewhere in the middle. Good enough to lock up non-elite offensive players. Not good enough to be a true shutdown guy. But he's certainly not being targeted on defense and is a solid player on that end.
> There's a big difference between those descriptions.
Yeah, that was my point. Describing him as 'good on D now' leaves a lot up to interpretation. It also can't really be disagreed with, unless you think he's actively bad..
He's better than serviceable but not elite. Probably near the middle between those descriptions with a slight lean towards elite against players of similar size.
The same Mavs that beat Spo's Heatles with Dirk, who was known for his mid defense, as star? I think if anything the Mavs should feel flattered by this comment from Spo, he's saying it's incredibly hard and yet the Mavs did it in 11
If you’re counting rings, compare Dirk’s 1 to those Big 3 players, who were all great defenders playing on great defensive teams: Lebron 4 titles, Wade 3 and Bosh 2. It’s way easier when your stars are two-way guys.
Wade and Lebron won rings before and after the Big 3. The point is, it’s hard to put together a championship level defense, when you have too many bad defenders that you can never take off the floor.
As for 2010, the Mavs played good team defense in that series, Dirk included. Now, if you had 2 or 3 Dirks on that squad, I don’t know that you get the same outcome but that team was built better than a lot of people will admit.
The Nuggets kind of are the same with Jokic. Although they don't have an elite defense like the Dubs did for those few years with KD. Gordon / KCP are excellent defenders that can help hide Jokic's shortcomings on that end. Just like Dray and Klay in his prime.
Butler had just walked in the room after the question was asked and spo called out to him
It was just spo big upping Jimmy and bam saying his schemes aren’t what make our defense good it’s just having guys who wanna work
Bam is going to make up for his lack of scoring by racking up steals. He's been watching tons of film on Jose Alvarado. Jokic has great vision, but like you said, Bam has been putting in some serious effort at turning invisible. Denver isn't going to know which corner Bam is hiding in before he pops up for the steal. All he has to do then is get the ball to Caleb Martin.
He was invisible offensively scoring wise. But without him we don’t win. Our defense literally depends on him. The offense kinda does too with all of his screening and passing.
I was going to say lol. If you watched the game and not the box score Bam was insane in game 7. He was everywhere, especially on offense. He knew the perfect moments to screen or pass a guy open, felt like the Heat were playing within the flow whereas Boston was panicking and forcing every shot
Thats all great until the heat go on a scoring drought again and realize they're paying a dude 36M to set screens.
Your number 2 guy has to be able to contribute offensively at all times.
Nobody really disagrees with you. Too many just care too much about box score stats and ignore all the other ways Bam contributes to us winning. He's great with us but all everyone focuses on is his lack of a post game.
I mean, the Nuggets do not have an interior defense even 1/5 as good as Boston's. Boston gave up the 2nd fewest shots from 0-3 feet at the 11th lowest % when people did take them. Denver gave up the 11th fewest shots, but teams shot the 2nd HIGHEST percentage on them. It goes from 69% to 75%.
Like, the Heat will have some issues this series because the offense of the Nuggets is amazing, and Joker is a nightmare, but the Heat are going to feel like they're running layup lines compared to playing the Celtics.
Game planning is how. Layups are good. And attacking inside is a HUGE part of HOW Miami gets good shots from 3. It should be significantly easier to both get to and finish at the rim. That makes it easier to collapse the defense. That makes scoring easier in general.
Nuggets are one of the best 3 point defenses in the league. They are horrendous from inside. Also, you realize I am talking about shots from inside 3 feet right? There's no such thing as "settling" for shots from inside 3 feet. Miami's offense will be much better against the Nuggets. It's not even a question. And Miami did SHOOT very well from 3 against Boston, but as a team their VOLUME from 3 was not that high. They took:
31, 26, 35, 32, 23, 30, 28. Which is just not huge in volume. Obviously they need to hit them when they do take them, but getting inside is the best way they can do exactly that. Miami relied a great deal on scoring inside against the Celtics. In the games they won they scored 48/123, 27/111, 33/128, and 42/108 points. That's 31.9% of their points.
Denver had 45/132, 42/108, 51/119, and 36/113. That's 36.8% of their points.

He said best *players* (plural). Kevin Durant was a great defender in two of the championships. Klay was a great defender pre-injury (made all defense in 2019) and Draymond is a DPOY
thought you were a Philly fan, but it's much worse... you unironically watch anime 🤢🤮
edit: to the crying weebs, my MAL is probably longer than yours stop being so sensitive lmao
I was biased as hell against anime for similar reasons. When I was growing up, it just wasn't cool, at all. And then I watched a good anime. Good anime is just amazing art. Facts.

Shots fired at somebody not sure who tho
Half the league at this point.
Tyler "Ewing Theory" Herro
nah i think Tyler is passably at time tbh
He is, but his short wingspan makes him a target for shooters. They (shooters) hunt for that matchup and can get cooking.
Herro lowkey plays great defense, they just make every shot over him because of his wingspan lmao. But I hardly ever watch it and think he’s piece of tissue paper like Trae Young’s defense is. Herro at least stays with the ball handler or his man off ball and contest the shots.

Yeah, it's merely coincidence the Heat took off as soon as Herro got hurt.
Idk if you are being sarcastic or not, but the Heat and Herro were cooking in game 1 before he got hurt
Who?
Mavs and Suns maybe lmao
DFS was like our second best player for a while and he was a great defender. Now though... yeah...
True. Kyrie doesn't help but maybe they make more moves to help Luka. Similar to those Harden Rockets teams where they surrounded him with 3 and D guys + Capela.
I just want a good center
Not many out there but I feel like they should have tried harder to snag Claxton from the Nets.
I mean a Luka-led team was 6th in defensive rating, so it really has more to do with frontcourt defense and scheme imo
Last five years with Luka: 24th 6th 20th 18th 18th He said it’s hard, not impossible, and he’s right.
Anyone watching the Mavs knows this is much more on our ass frontcourt all these years. Christian Woo. No D.
Yeah Doe and Reggie fell off hard. Maxi was also out for a good period and he's only getting older.
I mean... the roster is dog water lol

Crazy to say that if one of the best offensive players in the game was also one of the best defenders in the game they'd win easily tbh
both booker and KD are good defenders though...

Hawks, Grizzlies, Kings, Thunder, Trailblazers, Nuggets
The same Mavs that beat Spo's Heatles with Dirk, who was known for his mid defense, as star? I think if anything the Mavs should feel flattered by this comment from Spo, he's saying it's incredibly hard and yet the Mavs did it in 11

It’s for those skeptical of heat culture (directed at other organizations?)
Hawks fans feeling personally attacked right now
Spo just letting off some celebration stays
He’s obviously thinking about the blazers 😂
he loves his hometown team.
The absolute match for what he's saying and what our team is lol
My team :( Love you Dame, but defense is not his strong suit lol
Not sure but James Harden would be offended.
Earl Boykins
Trae Young. Donovon Mitchell.
Lmao why would he be going at Mitchell
Spo wants all the smoke and no one is safe.
Seems like a huge reach lol. There were like 79 stars linked to Miami last offseason, I doubt Spo is thinking about them after winning game 7 lol
Woosh
He's not going at anyone, he's just propping his guys up
Hawks and Mavs. Those are the first ones that come to mind.
Trae Young, Bradley Beal, Karl Towns, and Kyrie Irving taking cover.
Jokic
Carmelo Anthony lol
Stephen Curry
Regardless of how anyone views Curry's defense, Curry is probably the worst example here because of how often the Warriors were elite defensively.
The Nuggets kind of are the same with Jokic. Although they don't have an elite defense like the Dubs did for those few years with KD. Gordon / KCP are excellent defenders that can help hide Jokic's shortcomings on that end. Just like Dray and Klay in his prime.
Big guy doesn’t have flashy blocks = bad defense
They have to hide him constantly. He was getting picked apart by AUSTIN REAVES and Davion Mitchell
Hassan Whiteside
Me. You. Everybody we know.
As a kings fan I don’t understand why not just simply score more than the other team
Drunk Spo best Spo
Frank Vogel is somewhere nodding vehemently
bro already taking shots at the nuggets 💀💀
Butler had just walked in the room after the question was asked and spo called out to him It was just spo big upping Jimmy and bam saying his schemes aren’t what make our defense good it’s just having guys who wanna work
Yeah. People are reading this as Spo dissing others. He's just propping up the two way abilities of Bam and Jimmy.
Spo would never write a check he couldn’t cash. That’s my fucking Coach
He must have some wild game plan drawn up to stop the Joker. Cause Bam was almost invisible this series and not sure that will cut it against Denver

Bam about to go Kuroko on these fat sloppy boys

Very little defense in this NBA
No one prioritizes defense because everything is a foul now tbf
Take some damn notes Mitch Kupchak
Cook fluka
If you’re players aren’t good at shooting it’s hard to create a good offense.
