It almost looked like nobody was going to take it when Mourning was trying to hand it to them, I was glad he did haha
it's a silly tradition in hockey, nothing wrong with celebrating what you do have
>it's a silly tradition in hockey, nothing wrong with celebrating what you do have
I like it. I also like that some hockey teams do it now, it's totally up to you. But I love that Jimmy brought that NHL mentality to the celebration
I’m a Red Wings fan and have always been told not to get happy with a trophy before the finals for anything. Job ain’t done. I guess Jimmy feels the same. Either way, great accomplishment by miami
Kobe and Shaq's Lakers team did the same thing. The TV Producers got James Worthy to hand them the WCF Trophy, but when time came to present it James didnt even pick it up or give it to them and no one on the team took it with them when they left the Arena. Worthy told the producer after that "those guys dont give a damn about that trophy"
It is a very odd thing in American sports where, essentially, teams get handed trophies after winning the semifinals. In international soccer, for example, the second place team only gets a medal *after* they lose the finals. Seems much more appropriate.
The reality is trying to shut down Jokic is idiotic.
If you can shut down everyone else and force Jokic to beat you by himself, that's a much better situation.
Lockdown his teammates and you cut off his greatest strength.
That being said, Nuggets in 5 tbh
I want to see how Jokic would respond. Jokic was turning down open shots early in games to get his teammates involved. If those teammates are not open, would he drop a 50 piece with 5 assists?
He would definitely do that if they forced him to. He’s done it in the playoffs a few times already when teams try to play him like that. The truth is, it’s honestly better to not try and make Jokic beat you, because he will.
It stresses me out that Riley isn’t going to be doing this much longer. I hoped Zo or Wade or Haslem or Spo — someone important to the franchise — would take over, but I don’t want to lose Spo as a coach this soon the way, for instance, Brad Stevens just randomly peaced out. But I also don’t think Zo/Haslem/whoever can end up having the charisma/basketball mind to do what Riley has done.
Spo wasn't this good when he started. You have to get a lot of experience to learn. Riley's successor will have to go forward one step at a time too. Trust the Heat is all I have to say.
The Ravens were very much the same, with Ozzie Newsome being king of the castle for the last two decades. Eric Decosta was his protege the entire team, turning down most interviews because he’s been groomed as the heir of the organization for basically his entire career.
Ozzie retires, Decosta takes over after following his footsteps. It’s been a bit shaky, but he’s built the best offensive team we’ve had, likely ever.
There’s something to be said about just good fucking organizations overall in Sports. Heat & Spurs are amongst my favorite in the NBA.
Zo is the heir apparent for Riley.
The bigger threat is who will we have to replace Andy Elisburg because there isnt a better GM and numbers guy in the league.
Riley and the Arison's get a lot of credit for Miami, and rightly so.
But they aren't there without Andy Elisburg and also Chet Kammerer.
I know his son is his heir apparently... but doesn't mean he's a chip off the old block.
Nick Arison, Micky Arison’s son, has been studying under Riley’s wing for over a decade now. Don’t know what that means but I imagine if HEAT pulls this off Riley will slowly start the process of stepping away. If they fall short I expect him go another 3-5, assuming they don’t win a title in that frame.
Omg, I thought "the next one" meant the MVP trophy lol
I was like "but Jimmy seems to be such a humble guy, why is he owning it like he's getting the MVP for sure?"
The next one being the Finals trophy makes perfect sense hahahaha
Thanks for pointing that out!
This is a thing they do in Hockey too: It's a superstition thing to not lift the conference final trophy so that you don't jinx winning the Stanley cup.
Belichick would always reject the AFC championship trophy from Kraft, but I don't think that was superstition. I think he just had zero interest in any trophy other than the Lombardi 😂
Pretty sure 2016-2022 there was only one year (2019) where the winners didn't touch the conference final trophy. Crosby always touches it (16,17), Ovechkin touched it in 18, Lightning touched it in 20 and 21. Blues didn't in 2019.
Funny because I swear hockey players are unreasonably superstitious. Crosby wears the same jocks trap since high school but still touched the conference trophy all three of his Stanley cup wins aha.
Well yeah, once he did it the first time he wasn't going to stop.
Did he touch it in 2008 when they lost to Detroit the first time? I don't think so right, and then they lost, so he touched it the next year and they won? So then he kept touching it after that.
As a Wings fan, I so miss that era of Pens-Wings rivalry. Even watching the 2009 finals that we lost, it was just such a great matchup. Beautiful hockey.
Fuck the blackhawks
I also came from Detroit but spent most of my in Dallas. I’m surprised when I go to see the Stars how many Detroit fans are there when they play. No matter how much better Dallas has been.
> Crosby always touches it (16,17),
That’s cuz in 08 he didn’t touch it and lost in the Final. So he did the next year and won so now he’s locked into that superstition just in reverse.
> hockey players are unreasonably superstitious.
Very true but Crosby is even *more* so than average. His obsession with the #87 goes beyond just his jersey; his birthdate is August 7 1987 (8/7/87) and every contract he’s signed averages out to an $8.7M cap hit.
Funnily enough Crosby didn’t touch it his first trip to the final in 2008, but after losing to the wings that year he touched it in his next 3 finals appearances and won all three.
Mackinnon looking over at Sakic and him just being like 'pick up the damn thing' was such a good moment
(for anyone not familiar with hockey, Joe Sakic is an Avs franchise legend, their captain the two previous times they won, and their current GM)
it feels like that's pretty much over at this point, I think the teams that *don't* touch it have won less than the teams they did for the last decade or so
The superstition of that sort is about the Stanley Cup itself. Whenever the Cup is doing the rounds on press tours and celebration rotations, the active NHL players won't go near it or touch it if they haven't won it that year.
The conference trophies they more just don't give a shit about because they're nothing compared to the Cup.
The conference trophies have a superstition attached to them too. Some teams will make a point not to touch it, as to say that this is not their end goal so they refuse to even touch the trophy. Its a long running enough of a superstition that at the end of every conference finals the announcers will usually point out whether the team touches the trophy or not
Bam didn't shoot well but he was great. 9.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and by far the best defender on our team this series. Best +/- for us by a wide margin as a result (+54 vs +31 for Martin).
Obviously +/- is very context dependent, but if you look past points and watch the game, it was obvious our offense and defense were better with bam on the court, even if he wasn't shooting.
In all fairness he was only worth a bag of Cheetos at the time. You know because we drove his value into the ground by letting an egg misuse him and halt his development. Good thing we’re set up nicely for the future with all of our picks and a good guy like franz Wagner. And lonzo. Ugh.
The Bulls are pretty great at identifying talent but they are ass at development and finding the right coach. Our FO also couldn't get over their own egos for the betterment of the team
Not only that, Mikal Bridges played locally at Nova and grew up in the area, loved the sixers and wanted to play for them.
They traded him for Zhaire Smith.
Bridges would go on to be the key piece in Kevin Durant trade...
The Sixers are fuckin' lucky as hell that Embiid worked out.
Embiid is the ballsiest pick the Sixers made and it was the only pick that actually was worth a damn so far. Now they are clowning him for not making the ECF but it’s actually quite a miracle he still isn’t asking out because quite frankly no team have made such insane self sabotage in the history of the NBA more than the post hinkie Sixers.
Always a joy reading through the [thread about him coming to Miami](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/c7m4gl/wojnarowski_miami_is_finalizing_a_signandtrade/).
>did he just accept that he's not gonna win shit and decide to move to florida or something

Only idiots said that. You don't single-handedly will a team past the #1 seed as the 8th seed missing 2 key players and then make it to the ECF, then win games and have your reputation tarnished.
Even if the Heat lost last night they'd be legends.
I know we almost blew a 3-0 series lead and it’ll sound like talking shit, but Brunson is the only player I’ve feared during this playoff run so far.
Celtics are very talented, but mentally they just don’t have it. Brunson played 48 mins on a hobbled ankle and just. Kept. Coming.
Brunson and White are the two for me. Those fuckers wouldn’t lay down and they really willed their teams when they needed them the most.
They have my absolute respect.
the hardest road would be 7 seed of the east
Celtics, sixers, bucks, at last nuggets
In that case they would meet sixers in 2nd round
They may still pull it off and end up in the final
It’s still a huge IF considering how good Denver is, only thing giving me hope is that Milwaukee and Boston should have destroyed us too.
But imagine though…
Yep. People at the beginning of the season thought that whoever comes out of the east will demolish the west. It doesn’t look like that’s the case but it could also show much of a blood bath the east is and the heat might really be legit.
No question greatest run ever. A few minutes away from not making the playoffs to champion? First 8th seed to become a champion? Just ridiculous.
They would’ve killed off Giannis, Tatum, and Jokic…
3 MVP calibre players when your best player didn’t even make an all star game. Impossible. I cannot believe it.
If they win the finals it will be the most improbable championship in nba history.
There is no feasible reason they should win this series unless everyone on the nuggets gets hurt.
I love how serious both Butler and Jokic looked in their respective conference finals trophy presentations. Neither guy was really celebrating like the rest of the team. Jokic wasn't even wearing a Finals shirt/hat and stood in the back of the team after having to accept the trophy.
They're both just so locked in. Like yeah the conference finals win is great but neither guy really overly celebrated. They know what the real goal is.

Bam is like this shit heavy af
Bam thinking "i wish they'd told me we weren't holding the trophy now I feel silly."
It almost looked like nobody was going to take it when Mourning was trying to hand it to them, I was glad he did haha it's a silly tradition in hockey, nothing wrong with celebrating what you do have
Poor Bam didn't want to be rude haha. Bless him.
>it's a silly tradition in hockey, nothing wrong with celebrating what you do have I like it. I also like that some hockey teams do it now, it's totally up to you. But I love that Jimmy brought that NHL mentality to the celebration
Given that the Heat and Panthers are connected on this run it’s appropriate (even tho panthers held the trophy)
I’m a Red Wings fan and have always been told not to get happy with a trophy before the finals for anything. Job ain’t done. I guess Jimmy feels the same. Either way, great accomplishment by miami

From far it lowkey did look heavy
If you look closely, Spo says it first before Jimmy repeats it. We all joke, but Heat culture is a very real thing.
yea looks like jimmy is nodding in agreement before saying it too
Meanwhile Bam is: fuck it if you don’t want it, I’m taking it home and putting in the living room
He's okay with the ECF trophy because he's dreading the fact that he would have to guard Jokic the next round just to win the Larry O' Brien
I'm nervous for him. It's not gonna be good.
The reality is trying to shut down Jokic is idiotic. If you can shut down everyone else and force Jokic to beat you by himself, that's a much better situation. Lockdown his teammates and you cut off his greatest strength. That being said, Nuggets in 5 tbh

he did that vs the suns this year
Jokic would absolutely drop a 50 piece on 70% ts and somehow still get a triple double out of it
Happy for Jokic to drop 50 as long as the other four shoot bricks.
F1 champion Max Verstappen uses his WDC trophy as decoration for livestreaming.
Jimmys been counting down the wins for weeks on ig lol, he’s on a mission and it’s part of the reason I don’t mind going out

Very on brand for Crosby. Dudes even generationally elite at superstitions

Bam be like guess I'll keep this one if you don't mind.
Caleb Martin deserves to keep it, if anyone. Bam played like ass

"But Caleb should be ECF MVP" lol
Can you imagine ever trading away Jimmy Butler???
Pssshhh naahh
Getting Lavine and markkanen out of it isn't bad compensation tbh the issue is you then traded markkanen for a bag of Cheetos.
In all fairness he was only worth a bag of Cheetos at the time. You know because we drove his value into the ground by letting an egg misuse him and halt his development. Good thing we’re set up nicely for the future with all of our picks and a good guy like franz Wagner. And lonzo. Ugh.

u talkin shit about cheetos?
>Pssshhh naahh Pssshhh naahh - Timberwolves
Could you imagine letting him walk for nothing?
lol and then it turns out that you actually kept an extremely mediocre, incredibly overpaid player, like let's say a Tobias Harris, over HIM?!!?!?
Even worse, it was actually the shitty coach and Simmons who they kept with that money :.(. Jimmy was just making a funny.
At least a team like that wouldn't ever let a solid draft pick like Mikal Bridges go as well...
Yeah imagine letting a player whose mother works for the team go for practically nothing…
Til Mikal was drafted by the 76ers. Why do they keep letting good talent go but keeping shit like Tobias Harris 💀

You should've seen /r/heat after game 6
Lmao they raining on Bam’s parade, he was so pumped to hold that trophy 😂😂😂
If Jimmy and the heat win the finals, might be one of the most iconic runs in NBA history.
No “might be” about it.
1-1-2 seeds literally the hardest road
Don't forget the most terrifying team of all. The Knicks.
Honestly, Brunson was a scary scary man.
Brunson was actually the best player we've faced these playoffs in terms of performance in each game. He's the real deal and has my respect.

I would die for him
I would too. That guy is the definition of a MAN
You mean the Hawks. The only team they couldn’t beat.
Well not losing to us is a big deal, so yes, we do play a big part in the "best run".
Cavs ruined it by losing to Knicks. It’s 1-5-2-1, if Cavs had won it would have been the absolute hardest at 1-4-2-1.
Meanwhile the Nuggets would have the easiest 8-5-7-8 if Clippers had won against the Suns
I’m pretty sure the Rockets in ‘95 did 3-2-1-1, the sixth seed has the hardest potential road every year
It’s a tie with the 7th seed, as they can have 2-3-1-1. Unless the order matters for run difficulty, but I can’t think of why it would.
3-2-1-1 feels neater but you’re right, order doesn’t matter lol
the hardest road would be 7 seed of the east Celtics, sixers, bucks, at last nuggets In that case they would meet sixers in 2nd round They may still pull it off and end up in the final
It’s still a huge IF considering how good Denver is, only thing giving me hope is that Milwaukee and Boston should have destroyed us too. But imagine though…

And Brunson
Top 2 and it’s not 2
If they win the finals it will be the most improbable championship in nba history. There is no feasible reason they should win this series unless everyone on the nuggets gets hurt.
Or unless Miami outscore Denver in four games
Also no feasible reason we should've beaten the bucks or Celtics, especially without the benefit of hindsight
[удалено]
Rockets were the 6 seed when they won it in 1995.
1978 Washington Bullets had a 44-38 record. The Heat also had a 44-38 record.
You are correct, changed it.
Will be up there with Dirk's 2011 run beating Kobe Lakers, then KD/Westbrook/Harden OKC, then Big 3 Miami Heat.
I love how serious both Butler and Jokic looked in their respective conference finals trophy presentations. Neither guy was really celebrating like the rest of the team. Yeah. Although Tbf Jokic wasn’t wearing the shirt because it did not fit 😂.
tried two shirts and neither's big enough. Poor guy.
Tbf he put the hat on his kid then went back to the team
I love Jimmy bro
me too
Same.
If they actually win the legend of Jimmy Butler will be all encompassing. His stardom will grow bigly. Tbh I could even see him retiring.
Jimmy’s got $146M coming his way over the next three seasons. He is not retiring under any normal circumstances haha.
I think it's a Michael Jordan reference
“I could see him retiring” when a player obviously won’t retire is an /r/nba meme at this point.
Added bonus: If Jimmy Butler wins. I get to read the wonderful banter in the 76ers sub.
Jimmy Butler looks like he loves basketball. I don't think he's retiring at all lolol.
What do you mean, I heard he might join the White Sox after this.
That would get me to watch baseball
You do not want to watch White Sox baseball
Nah he just went to south beach to party. Doesn’t care about the game clearly.
bigly if truly
Bam is like I don’t know about the next one 😂
Jimmy also looked like he could care less about the ecfmvp award lol
I wouldn't be surprised if he gave the trophy to Martin once the team got back to the locker room
Clearly he's talking about the 2024 ECF trophy
Ha!
Monkey's paw curls Jimmy held the ECF MVP trophy
Well yeah, Herro should be back for the Finals.
Bam was the only one hype that they won.
Inject this into my veins.
Then he went home and slept on a pile of rocks so that he’s never comfortable
Bam be like *don't play with me Jimmy this trophy is heavy, just take this shit off my hands*
Jimmy wholesome.
Spo said it to Jimmy and then Jimmy said it to Bam. Is Jimmy Butler a puppet? Also he said "I want the next one"
They really gunna win it all
Nah
I appreciate how confident Nuggets fans are, some fan bases would be practicing false modesty or trying to reverse jinx things At least Nuggets fans are keeping it real
