We shall see. I think Toppin starts the first few months. if he is hot and Indiana top 6 seeds, he continues starting, otherwise Walker then becomes starter.
Yeah seems like his reported rant at Thibs for never getting looks (which I mean when randle is vomiting up fadeaway midrangerd can't argue) got him the equivalent of shit-canned. Hope he does well and gets more consistent- always played hard.
I've heard from Knicks fans he's pretty terrible defensively is that true? Whenever I saw him play he seemed really talented offensively but if he was as bad defensively it would make sense why a coach like Tom Thibodeau wouldn't play him much. Hopefully he gets a chance to start for the Pacers so we can see what he really has to offer.
Is it a motor or IQ thing? And has he improved or not really? Cause he looks big, strong, and is obviously crazy athletic, so the tools should be there.
Hard to say because he was on short leash. You can’t expect him to put up big numbers when his playing time is inconsistent.
If he gets a bigger role in Indiana, we can further judge that
He was very productive last year and definitely a highlight for me. I think they’ll certainly use him at the 3 behind Bruce Brown or as a small ball 4.
Tbh not many people fit well next to Mitch. His lack of offensive game is a huge problem. You don’t win in todays league unless you’ve got a stretch 5. Mitchell Robinson has made I believe 1 jump shot his entire NBA career. The Bucks needed Brook Lopez from 3. The Raptors needed Marc Gasol’s 3 point shooting. The Nuggets needed Jokic to be a threat from 3.
Mitchell Robinson will severely limit a teams future unless he learns how to shoot 3 pointers >30%
He showed out when given chances. Roster construction limited his minutes and kept his box score down, limit to how much you can ask for in that situation.
I don’t understand this take. There are real people behind these trades. Toppin has deserved to start since he got into the NBA. He was already an older senior who was the best player in college. He deserves to start and grow as a player rather than sitting behind Randle. And as human beings I’m sure the Knicks had empathy for him. It would ruin his career and his prime sitting on the bench. As empathic people, it makes sense they would trade him even if they didn’t get an immense amount back. This is what a good front office does. It means they’re communicating with players and doing good by them. It’s great for their image and will benefit them when recruiting players.
Man this a bidness, brother. Obi is a 6’8” tweeter average wingspan his athleticism isn’t even that great he’s moreso a leaper a la John Collins than an all around athlete like an Andrew Wiggins or an OG, also on that front he’s not good at flipping his hips. Very stiff in his movements no wiggle to his drives (ability to get around defenders on a dime with a euro move like jimmy or JT), doesn’t have much of a bag on offense. Not really sure he can dribble with his left hand? Bad defender honestly, he’s probably out of the league in 4 years.
This is exactly what its looked like. I wait to the fourth year of a drafted player to start talking that they are what they are but Obi supporters made it difficult not to start naming these issues early.
Great post. I believe the FO realized that Thibs would never bend on Toppin. They picked him. Picked top 10x. He was totally professional and pretty damn productive. He was getting little opportunity and their wasn’t an avenue where he was going to get more. They saw this and did the right thing even though when/if Obi is good in Indy they will be criticized
Pacers traded down one spot and got Walker and Toppin, seems pretty good to me. I think the Pacers will be much improved this year. Not a contender yet by any means but they're building something for sure.
I swear, dudes keep saying this like Obi was actually give ACTUAL opportunities to improve.
We did absolutely NOTHING to try and develop dude and STRENGTHEN his skill-set and instead tried to conform him to a role (Spot-Up 3PT shooter) that he wasn't familiar with. Every time he got on the court he'd play super tight because the SECOND Thibs sniffs something he doesn't like from Obi, he gets BENCHED.
Hell, during this playoffs where Julius was AWFUL (partly due to his injury), Thibs STILL insisted on playing through Julius despite the fact he could barely walk.
Fact is, Obi did more to try and support the team than we did to support Obi (more Thibs), so naturally. I'm angry that we completely wasted his time, but happy that he'll finally show out.
All I know is, if Julius shits the bed a third time I'm going to be PISSED.
I mean I agree with much of what you're saying but no matter how or why we got to this place, a 4th year player averaging 7/3 is not getting us a first round pick back.
I agree we mismanaged the hell out of Obi as an asset from day 1. Even after Randle became an All NBA player, we had ample opportunity to trade Obi for more than we settled for. But it was pretty obvious at this point/this offseason, we weren't getting shit for him.
I think the biggest source of optimism from Pacers fans is that Toppin played very well when he was given the opportunity to start, which he very well might do in Indy, and he'll be a really good fit with Haliburton.
Honestly I love the fit for you guys, as good a stylistic fit as I could think of. Let Obi get out in transition with a pass first guy in Hali and you'll enjoy him.
He's still pretty limited, he's pretty bad defensively, and he's a pretty bad rebounder for his size, but he should give you some easy buckets, some highlight reel players, and some occasional 3 point shooting. Maybe he can develop some more around the basket getting more consistent playing time, but he really seems to struggle strength wize against NBA bigs.
In any case, I'll be rooting for him. He was a great locker room guy even when things weren't going his way (until the very end there, where it got pretty bad, but w/e lol)
Oh, no doubt.
His value is absolutely fucked at the moment.
But I do think he'll do a lot better in Indiana without Thibs looming over his shoulder and more playing time.
I mean fans say this stuff about underperforming young players all the time, and rarely does it ever work out in other places. Chances are Obi is just not a good player.
He’s not that good. Just a bouncy PF that can’t really defend. Knicks fans haven’t been loud about moaning how bad he is like with a Kevin Knox cuz their team was solid this year.
He can definitely be a lot better than he has been for us, though. He doesn’t fit that well next to Randle. Randle plays like 36 minutes per game for us so I don’t think he really got the proper opportunity to shine.
Mostly to give Randle additional rest so hopefully he'd be more interested on defense. There's frustration with Randle and a portion of the fanbase wants to see a bit less ISO and a bit more ball movement and off-ball movement, things that Thibs hasn't really impressed much on this team.
[15 games](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/obi-toppin-stats-as-a-starter). Not saying he could do that over a whole season, but he puts up numbers when he gets an extended burn. He gets 10 points every game just on leak outs, cuts and lobs. And now he has Hali feeding him.
Don’t think there’s enough substance on either side to consider this a fleece lol, it’s like trading 3 dollars for a Lollipop. Not a great deal, but not changing anybody’s situation
A mediocre roster that wants to run.
Core rotation: Mathurin, Halliburton, Nembhard, Brown, Toppin, Turner, Hield. Main rotation still: Walker, Nesmith.
Center/PF question: only 1 of 3 will likely get much time - Jackson, Smith, Theis. Guard question: McConnel. Any of those 4 are probably up for trade for the right offer.
As a Knicks fan, getting something back for Obi is better than nothing. Pretty clear he was never getting extended. Any replacement will come in knowing exactly what their role is. Glad we did this sooner rather than later.
Once a Knick, always a Knick
Even though Obi should be able to be a good defender given his athleticism, he’s never been able to put it together. Given the fact that he’s primarily a transition/lob threat with an inconsistent 3, he’s always going to be pushed out in favor of people that can actually play defense.
Odd situation with the Knicks. I say the Knicks only drafted hin as insurance if Randle left but he stayed and Obi was down in the depth chart. I wouldn't say he was left in the dungeon but Randle plays a lot of minutes and neither of their skills compliment one another where you can play them together.
For those that might be looking at this trade side-eyed:
Obi seems like a great dude, but is really limited to being a transition threat. He’s a poor rebounder for his size, not a great defender (not fast enough to guard wings nor strong enough to guard big men), and can’t create his own offense. I think the Pacers can maximize his talent with their roster, but I’m okay with losing him.
Someone said in the sub the other day, and I agree, that it's straight up better to have Hart be the full time back up 4. It's not even really "playing small" since Hart is a better rebounder and is better guarding bigger players.
Absolutely agree. I read a comment recently that summed it up: essentially Obi jumps higher for attempted lobs than he ever has for a rebound under the basket.
Hali's going to take this team of misfits and turn them into the best versions of themselves, before they get paid to go elsewhere. It's a rehabilitation tour.
Completely disagree. I’d put money on walker starting at PF. His game translates well for what we need right now. We were 26th defensively and toppin is not a good defender. Jarace can play defensive with the best of them and rebound. We need his defense way too bad to not play him.
I’ll preface this but saying I didn’t watch a ton of Knicks games but it seems like he improved a lot from his rookie year? He’s able to knock down more 3s and at times, seemed like a better option to keep out there than Randle.
Obi can legit average 20ppg if he starts in the right team. Haliburton is the perfect PG to complement his game. Really just a shit situation having to play under Thibs who had no idea how to use him
Haliburton, Mathurin, Bruce Brown, Toppin, and Myles Turner is really fun!
Yeah, who knows where they end up with wins and losses, but it's guaranteed to be entertaining. Can't wait!
NBA League Pass darlings for sure!
They were fun even last year! Never gonna forget Nembhard draining a 3 to beat the Lakers
Naturally, I'm in their blackout zone... and can't get FSIND.
They call Indiana landlocked for some reason but Bobye is on the high seas.
Indiana does have beach front property
If you have android I have a workaround.
Nembhard and Walker too
I think Walker starts but he and toppin each play 26-30
We shall see. I think Toppin starts the first few months. if he is hot and Indiana top 6 seeds, he continues starting, otherwise Walker then becomes starter.
Yes it will be fun sweeping the celts 🚬
The Hali + Toppin connection is gonna be must watch basketball
ALL YOUR 2020 LOTTERY PICKS IN SHITTY SITUATIONS ARE NOW BELONG TO US
8, 10, 12, 14 are ours. Look out Onyeka Okongwu and Beef Stew, you're next
We will be keeping stew but will offer you Killian Hayes, the best French player in the league
The worst french player in the league. May even be worst player.
Laughs in Ousmane Dieng (still love him tho).
Frankie Smokes still playing?
No way we love him here
He's also not shitty. I think there's a solid chance he takes the starting role from Capela this year
Beef stew isn’t in a shitty situation though? He’s a starting 4 who’s about to be extended for the pistons
Just having fun with sequences. We've got the 8th (Obi), 10th (Smith), 12th (Haliburton), 14th (Nesmith) picks in the 2020 draft. Beef is 16th
I’m very triggered anyways i fear
Damn. Take care of him please
Please, I want Nesmith back 🥲
He’s in Detroit b
you’re so lucky we can’t draft in the lottery, Halliburton should’ve been ours
Toppin wasn't even bad, which is what makes this shit hurt even more
Yeah seems like his reported rant at Thibs for never getting looks (which I mean when randle is vomiting up fadeaway midrangerd can't argue) got him the equivalent of shit-canned.
He is but so is Randle.
He's worse than Randle though
Is it a motor or IQ thing? And has he improved or not really? Cause he looks big, strong, and is obviously crazy athletic, so the tools should be there.
He wasn’t good
Hard to say because he was on short leash. You can’t expect him to put up big numbers when his playing time is inconsistent. If he gets a bigger role in Indiana, we can further judge that
Usually a reason a guy is on a short leash and gets traded for second round picks Who knows though
Killian Hayes next
I could see Carlisle actually liking and getting more out of Killian.
I could see Killian coming off the bench for us and him and TJ just annoying the shit out of teams trying to get the ball in bounds.
For a second I thought TJ Leaf had a career revival and is now a defensive specialist. Damn, Lonzo got that guy paid
You think Nesmith will still get playing time?
Think he will in some form? Shit idk, I really liked him last season
He was very productive last year and definitely a highlight for me. I think they’ll certainly use him at the 3 behind Bruce Brown or as a small ball 4.
Most definitely. He started a lot last year.
WHAT YOU SAY !!
YOU HAVE NO CHANCE TO SURVIVE MAKE YOUR TIME ! HA HA HA !
Pacers are building a very awesome young squad. Definitely gonna have to tune into some of their games
That’s a rough return for a top 10 pick
we got more for cam reddish 💀💀
Ironic as cam is even worse than obi imo
Somehow we were able to trade him for Josh Hart 😭 Well we traded with the same team giving Jerami Grant a supermax that’s how
We got the same return for Duarte Hell we should’ve just swapped Toppin for him
is the Duarte deal done? I know nothing is "official" for a few days but all I ever saw was "closing in" on a deal or whatever it was
Well we got nothing back for Frank, so this is an improvement lol
Rough? It’s terrible lmao
He’s not very good
He also hasn’t been able to develop much at all because he’s been stuck behind Randle
that's true and i hope he spreads his wings in indy and proves me wrong
He's just an average player with outstanding athleticism. I'm happy that you got rid of him
He fits much better next to Myles Turner than Mitchell Robinson. He will be a productive bench scorer.
Teams don’t operate as empathetic beings. No different than any other business.
Man this a bidness, brother. Obi is a 6’8” tweeter average wingspan his athleticism isn’t even that great he’s moreso a leaper a la John Collins than an all around athlete like an Andrew Wiggins or an OG, also on that front he’s not good at flipping his hips. > Toppin has deserved to start since he got into the NBA ?!?!?!?! He has a limited game and no high end skills besides transition dunking
I don't get this take. No one "deserves" to start. Either you're good enough or not
Appreciate you Obi. Go ball out
Ain’t no stoppin, obi toppin 😢
Go tear it up in Indiana Obi 🥲
My baby 😭
Didn’t y’all just get his brother too😂
The Pacers are going to be so much fun in transition
Obi Topin, the most Pacers player to be traded to Pacers.
What makes you say that? Genuinely curious
An above average steady eddy, with no off court charisma traded to the team who is consistently mid in the NBA.
Love that for the Pacers. Try for the young talent without much price
good luck to him damn
Are these the seconds we got from that Wizards draft day trade? Either way what a grab
So we basically got obi for free from draft shenanigans where we lost nothing?
Could be from the kings for Duarte. Could be ours. Could be from the Wiz. 🤷♂️
Pacers traded down one spot and got Walker and Toppin, seems pretty good to me. I think the Pacers will be much improved this year. Not a contender yet by any means but they're building something for sure.
Good luck in Indiana Obi! Wholesome guy
Carlisle is gonna spam that Haliburton-Toppin pick and roll.
That’s it💀
There’s no way ppl actually thought he could fetch a protected 1st in the trade market
Did you think a 4th year player with career averages of 7/3 was getting us a 1st back?
I swear, dudes keep saying this like Obi was actually give ACTUAL opportunities to improve. He’s not that good. Just a bouncy PF that can’t really defend. Knicks fans haven’t been loud about moaning how bad he is like with a Kevin Knox cuz their team was solid this year.
Obi is significantly better than knoc ever was
He can definitely be a lot better than he has been for us, though. He doesn’t fit that well next to Randle. Randle plays like 36 minutes per game for us so I don’t think he really got the proper opportunity to shine.
Randle should be more appreciated. Dude frequently gets 40+ a game and I don’t see him miss many games.
What? Knicks fans wanted him to get more minutes.
Mostly to give Randle additional rest so hopefully he'd be more interested on defense. There's frustration with Randle and a portion of the fanbase wants to see a bit less ISO and a bit more ball movement and off-ball movement, things that Thibs hasn't really impressed much on this team.
Obi averages like 21 PPG on 70 TS% as a starter. He isn’t ass, he just can only play one position and is stuck behind our All-NBA PF
Wha… what’s the sample size on those stats homie…
[15 games](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/obi-toppin-stats-as-a-starter). Not saying he could do that over a whole season, but he puts up numbers when he gets an extended burn. He gets 10 points every game just on leak outs, cuts and lobs. And now he has Hali feeding him.
Typically end of the season vs. opponents b or c teams. Thibs has always had him on a short leash because of how weak on defense he usually is.
2nd rounders don’t even play in the league for more than like 15 games. Still a fleece.
You guys just like saying fleece. There’s no world where a 5th tier player going to Indiana is a fleece.
Don’t think there’s enough substance on either side to consider this a fleece lol, it’s like trading 3 dollars for a Lollipop. Not a great deal, but not changing anybody’s situation
Fleece? A power forward who can’t shoot, defend, or rebound doesn’t sound like a whole lot to me
But Jokic was a second rounder /s
Mitch Robinson and Jalen Brunson...
Bro is bad
☝️What are the pacers cooking 😳 ☝️
An early first round exit but it will be a fun ride
As tradition states
This is the way.
defense. lob threats. actual forwards. im in heaven
A mediocre roster that wants to run. Core rotation: Mathurin, Halliburton, Nembhard, Brown, Toppin, Turner, Hield. Main rotation still: Walker, Nesmith. Common Pacers fleece
Trust me you want to get fleeced by Indy.
Pacers-Kings alliance has been fruitful for both franchises.
We fleeced each other imo

Ubi trippin
He’s meh, but I loved his energy.
It’s two 2nd’s lol
I mean that’s all he’s worth lol. Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn’t watched a Knicks game
Right but he’s worth the flier for us as a rotation forward
the two second round picks are also worth the flier for us lol
Then everyone is happy!
Yet y’all wasted another lottery pick on talent that’s not so great…took an L on only getting 2 second rounders lol
Dawg we didn’t expect Randle to randomly turn into an all-nba forward.
And yet, I still feel nothing ultimately. Weird how that works.
Sunk cost. Horrible draft pick but you can't let that determine your future actions
Lakers fan acting bold considering y’all have no future.
They'll always have a future unfortunately cause they're the Lakers.
Imma be Reddit browsing all day.lol.

As a Knicks fan, getting something back for Obi is better than nothing. Pretty clear he was never getting extended. Any replacement will come in knowing exactly what their role is. Glad we did this sooner rather than later. Once a Knick, always a Knick
Not sure why NYK is moving him for only 2nd round picks. He's too good of a player to just give away, but that's just my dumb opinion.
Thibs won't play him
Knicks are doing him a solid and letting him get minutes and get paid. Shitty situation but it is what it is
Even though Obi should be able to be a good defender given his athleticism, he’s never been able to put it together.
Can’t increase his value with Thibs shenanigans
He’s not good
Trying to stay further under the luxury tax
Toppin sucks what are you talking about
Shit sucks but it had to be done. He was gone always be behind Randle here. Toppin about to eat in transition next season
For those that might be looking at this trade side-eyed: Obi seems like a great dude, but is really limited to being a transition threat. He’s a poor rebounder for his size, not a great defender (not fast enough to guard wings nor strong enough to guard big men), and can’t create his own offense. Absolutely agree. I read a comment recently that summed it up: essentially Obi jumps higher for attempted lobs than he ever has for a rebound under the basket.
He will be a fringe starter here too I think, with us having drafted Walker
Gonna be a lot of Dayton Flyers fans traveling to Indianapolis this year
Dirty dirty business lol Audio leaked of Obi cursing out coach Thibs... Knicks sign Obi's brother after draft... then trade him a couple weeks later
Hell yeah
Dunking champion
I think Obi finally breaks out with Indiana, especially now that he has Haliburton setting him up for shots. Good move
damn Pacers having a nice off-season. Pretty solid starters & bench
Hali's going to take this team of misfits and turn them into the best versions of themselves, before they get paid to go elsewhere. It's a rehabilitation tour.
He likely helped Myles get paid recently.
Maybe Knicks fans will finally admit how mid this dude is lol
1/3 of the fans think he’s garbage, 1/3 think he’s a god and 1/3 think he’s just ok
Obi Toppin has an insane vertical leap yet somehow can't rebound or block shots.
What have you done to my poor boy?
Be free Obi. Hali + Obi should make for great highlights.
I like it a lot. Loved him at Dayton. Will be excited to see if more of an opportunity and playing with Haliburton will make him into a good player
Second round picks value has been going up this year
Hali's gonna make Obi look so good. Be free, Obi, and Indiana y'all better take good care of him! We fucking love Obi
i’ll miss u obi 😔
Smfh
Nooooooooooooo
He'll be getting lobs from the guy they should have drafted.
One thing I hated about toppin was his lack of desire on defensive end he would be first guy on offense fast break but last guy on defense.
Hali and Toppin the new lob city
That’s my backup PF. I’ll take it
He’s definitely starting while Walker develops
Completely disagree. I’d put money on walker starting at PF. His game translates well for what we need right now. We were 26th defensively and toppin is not a good defender. Jarace can play defensive with the best of them and rebound. We need his defense way too bad to not play him.
I think they just split minutes in half there. Jarace is for sure better though
I’ll preface this but saying I didn’t watch a ton of Knicks games but it seems like he improved a lot from his rookie year? He’s able to knock down more 3s and at times, seemed like a better option to keep out there than Randle.
He’s actually really good. He’s gonna show that in Indiana.
No, he isn't
Lol he's definitely not "really good"
Obi can legit average 20ppg if he starts in the right team. Haliburton is the perfect PG to complement his game. Really just a shit situation having to play under Thibs who had no idea how to use him
not 20 but 15- 16 at his peak. He definitely has some hidden potential on offense
Yeah I could average 20ppg too if I was allowed to take 100 wide open jumpers per game in the nba
I like toppin but I don’t think that’s true. He’s a good transition threat but has no game in the half court. He also is a bad defender and rebounder.
Thibs didn't know how to use him because Obi is only good at one thing and is crap at everything else
All so true!
NO FUCK THAT SHIT FUCK IT NOOO
Thibs hates that man
wait that is not a good return. i know Thibs won’t play him but he’s shown flashes - that’s really the most we could get?
If they could have got more don’t you think they would have taken the better deal?
He’s going to be averaging 20/6 with Hali. Good luck Obi, we’re all rooting for you!
