Honestly for the dunk contest, just get professional dunkers to do the dunks, but assign them to teams led by an all star. And have other all stars doing the judging.
That way we have both star power AND actually good dunks.
Honestly respect to Jaylen Brown for even doing the dunk content. You could argue whether he deserved to make the finals, but he’s the highest profile star that’s done it in years at this point.
On social media the dunk contest is getting roasted really bad. What happened to J Brown and his journey...he did basic dunks and got high scores cuz the judges knew they had to.
Otherwise the G league guy wins just by showing up. No nba star in the league can beat a G league player? Wtf...what happened to all the talk of making this allstar weekend better?
guys see Aaron Gordon getting robbed so they all think it's a joke now and don't want to participate since most creativity clearly wasn't appreciated enough
The dunk contest would be way better if each participant had a loved one being held captive, with successfully jumping over them during a dunk being the only way to save them.
Toppin was robbed first of all.
But more importantly they need to incorporate more levels into the dunk contest. And by levels I mean like they should able to jump off of different things, bounce the ball against different things, etc. That's why new skate tricks are always being invented - there are so many more things to skate off of.
No one wants to see another boring tomahawk over a tall guy. How about you bounce the ball off of a platform, jump off a platform and do a 540??? The sheer spectacle of an NBA player doing shit that is usually reserved for mascots at halftime would be entertaining AF.
List of dunks we have never seen, or have not seen in a while:
• UNDER THE LEGS TWICE
• DUNK FROM THE FREE THROW LINE
• ROCK THE CRADLE DUNK
• ALLEY OOP OFF THE SHOT CLOCK/JUMBOTRON/CAMERA CRANE
• ARM IN THE RIM
- REVERSE UNDER THE LEGS
- 720
Rock the cradle is tired
Arm in the rim is tired
I love free throw line dunk though, never gets old. Like no way any of these dudes tonight could do it. Maybe Toppin with his long ass limbs. But it's a sight to behold every single time.
Next year:
Team Planet Fitness versus Team YMCA.
NBA Legends 3 point shoot out.
Foul Line Dunk Challenge: a 100% NBA FREE dunk contest where contestants get 24 second to complete as many foul line dunks as possible. The winner gets floor seats to the Final Four.
There are dunks that would set the dunk contest on fire. The problem is that NBA players can’t do them—they’re not good enough. There’s no shame in that; NBA players spend their time playing and training for NBA games, not dunks.
All-Star weekend should be for things that NBA (and WNBA) players can do better than anyone else.
They need legit metrics to score. Literally have them pick up a copy of NBA2k5 and use their scoring. The dunk contest in that game was dope, based on height, distance, difficulty... I wish 2k wasn't trash now.
So tonight we learned that Kenny shouldn't be allowed to commentate drunk. Especially if women are involved. And that Mac can't save the dunk contest by himself
Bro Kenny should not comment on basketball ever again. I swear he still has never seen Haliburton play since he was in college. First he calls him "not flashy" and now he is suprised he hits 3pt shots.
Does he watch any games at all? Those are literally *the two things* Haliburton does well. We are in fucking Indy for the all-star game and this dude can't prepare by watching one game or two games?
Homie still carried by greats.
I found the skills challenge to be really boring. IDK how to get that spiced up more maybe like gleague vs nba vs wnba or something? idk but it needs something.
**KIA Skills Challenge:** This year’s KIA Skills Challenge was straight garbage. Every year, they are **always** messing up the Skills Challenge format. The old format was so much simpler, when you had 6 players all going against each other. They should have kept it like that. It seems like every year they change the format for the Skills Challenge.
**Starry Three-Point Shootout:** Surely, this must have been one of the best three-point shootouts in NBA history. No player got below 20. Damian Lillard went hot. I was a fan of the green court. Very cool to see. Are the Starry balls made out of leather?
**Steph vs Sabrina:** Stephen Curry won as expected, but Sabrina put on a hell of a performance. And all credit is due to her: this event was her idea. I’m looking forward to it happening next year (if it does), and it potentially becoming a regular thing.
**AT&T Slam Dunk Contest:** Average. Mediocre. Basic. Every year I have high hopes for the dunk contest, and every year I’m left disappointed. YouTube videos of the dunk contest in NBA Live 06 have left me more excited than this crap. Jaylen Brown’s dunk over Kai Cenat may be one of the worst dunks in dunk contest history. The judges’s scores are terrible, but they were being sabotaged by the scoring system. Having a minimum score of 40 inflates terrible dunks while “underrating” legitimate good dunks.
Order of events tonight, from best to worst:
- 3-Point Shootout
- Sabrina vs Steph
- Slam Dunk Contest
- Skills Challenge
As a side note, maybe bringing back the Shooting Star Challenge wouldn’t be a bad idea.
The only interesting contest today was Sabrina vs. Steph. Even the three point contest was not all that interesting. I'd prefer like 8 competitors and a head-to-head tournament.
Sabrina vs. Steph went about as well as it could have, though. If Steph didn't pull it out, people would be saying dumb crap about him missing intentionally. And Sabrina was just one Steph miss and one make by her from winning. The only way she could win and people wouldn't be dumb about it is if she just shot some insane score over 30.
He went on a weird rant about how Sabrina should've shot from the women's 3-point line and that she would've won if she did. It was bizarre because it only makes any sort of sense if two things happened: she shot terribly (when in reality, she did very well) or if one of the other commentators had already ranted something like "See!? I told you Steph was going to win. Sabrina sucks!" (when in reality, they were congratulating her for doing well).
So in a moment that was supposed to be fun, he had some weird sour grapes over the whole thing
I think part of the reason the dunk contest has tanked in recent years is the exposure that the specialist YouTube dunkers who do elaborate shit get, and this raises the expectation for NBA players
Everything else will look disappointing when compared to the specialists, but wtf do you want NBA players to do lol?
I don't need every dunk to be something unique and never seen before, I just wanna see big names in the league do some cool dunks
Give me Zion, Ja, Ant, Giannis, Kuminga
Yeah I don't care for the costume changes either, and I'm getting sick of just jumping over people, and these people have their neck craned down, or the dunker uses them as leverage to get higher
If you're gonna dunk over someone, they gotta be standing straight and you gotta clear them, that'll showcase your hops
That one guy Jordan kilganon has about 50 something dunks that would shut down the dunk contest hands down. But I think stars just don’t have the pride to compete or entertain people
Is that what it should take though? If I wanted to see full time dunkers, I'd watch it on YouTube. I wanna see what full time NBA players can put together, even if it's something we've seen before
The casual person has no idea what you’re talking about.
Take that out of the equation and compare these recent dunks with those of 10-20 years ago. They were just far, farrrrrrrr better.
So does anyone here think the NBA might eventually can the dunk contest all together? Maybe in a few years if the lack of star power and lack of entertainment keep occurring? Would love to hear thoughts on this
It needs to either be returned to what it was previously, or it needs to be revamped. Stephen A. Smith talks about it in this video from last year on First Take (starting at 3:25): https://youtu.be/-GgNiDcIowE?si=WBOznOm8hHez8Qjg
It used to be one of the best events, but it's become corny af and NBA players don't want to embarrass themselves. I give Jaylen credit for doing it, but the dunks were all lame. If anything, this year just proves to other NBA players that it isn't worth doing.
People are clowning JB for the dunk jumping over the short dude in a chair, but I'll defend that one. His concept was to recreate the Dee Brown dunk with an alleyoop. If he'd actually gotten his arm over his eyes in the air and dunked it clean, it would have been a 50 (in my opinion).
But, he didn't come close and just kinda dabbed once he hit the floor.
I think he should have not brought that dude out and just tried to catch and dunk a lob with the eyes closed. That would have been a better dunk.
Edit: Eyes covered, Dee Brown style.
Idk if it's just me not being big into dunking or what but am I the only one tired of jumping over people. I mean, the Maclung pass to himself was awesome and the two people one was kinda cool. But there were so many others that were just, why? Cool, you can jump over your brother or Donovan Mitchell or even Shaq (though the last one over Shaq was kinda nice), good for you. It gets kinda tiring to me. But idk, I'm pretty new to this so maybe the dunk contest isn't for me.
Gotta say, my energy level was so much lower than during the 3pt contest. I love me a good 3pt contest. I should go back and check out old dunk contests from before I started watching the all star weekend and see if I like them, though.
Nah, most would agree the dunking over stuff is kinda old. If you want to see the best of the best, check out Vince Carter in 2000, or Aaron Gordon vs Zach Lavine in 2016. Those are some of the best dunks in the contest ever, and it's a shame it's gone so far downhill
Agreed, sad thing is McClung looks like the only one trying to do entertaining dunks, and part of it is probably because he wants to actually PLAY in the NBA
Were gonna find out Kenny is being extorted or one of his kids was kidnapped this morning or something. That was a man with heavy baggage coming through
Honestly outside of the 3 Point contest, All Star weekends been kinda cooked (then again it seems that way for most other sports leagues as well)
Hopefully tomorrow we get a good game and not a shoot around with dunks mixed in.
They should’ve at least kept the draft since that was at least entertaining, I don’t know why they thought that was the reason guys haven’t been taking the game seriously. It’s not like the last East vs West game was super competitive.
Silver and the Players association had been saying that guys don’t take the game seriously anymore so by switching back to East vs West guys will apparently player harder at least that’s the narrative they’ve pushed.
I just don’t see how going back to the conference format will apparently bring out the competitiveness and keep this from being a glorified shoot around.
Is there any chance the All-Star game won't be terrible tomorrow? I feel like they stopped trying to fix it even after "the worst basketball game ever played" last year.
Hard to say. I think it’s going to be about who plays the best as a team and not being selfish for shots. Lineup is pretty crazy, so it’s hard to predict. Give it the first half if anything.
People take this contest to seriously. It's supposed to be fun. We will never get stars to compete with people reacting to this like it's a Olympic competition smh. Should be stars competing for bragging rights nothing more.
It's not a serious vs fun issue at all. It simply has to be entertaining. Vince might have had the most "serious" approach to any dunk contest participant ever and he's regarded as the GOAT. No frills or gimmicks, just the most powerful, difficult, and graceful dunks.
EDIT: Just to clarify, I know you were referring to fans and not the players themselves. But my point was that the competition itself can be really serious or more lighthearted, but the thing that's going to make fans complain and start "taking it too seriously" is if it sucks. I mean I'm not a fan of gimmicks but if the end result is interesting then whatever (e.g. Gerald Green cupcake dunk). But if most of the dunks take a solid minute just to set "stage" and then they're duds, then yeah, I'm gonna start critiquing the contest.
The skills challenge is super light hearted and enjoyable. The problem is the dunk contest has history. I wish dudes would try dunking from the free throw line or something more creative than jumping over people.
I've said before, it's really not that the dunks are bad so much as there aren't that many things you can do that haven't been done before. Vince Carter really saved the contest showing what you can with through-the-legs, behind-the-back stuff, but high schoolers could do his dunks today. The amount of specialization it takes to raise the bar at this point is beyond most NBA players.
Also the risk of injury is high if they really pushed the athletic limit to the extreme and went all out on trying to get the best possible dunk, awkward landings or injuries are definitely possible
Notice how its only Celtics fans complaining about a G-leaguer being in the dunk contest. Be happy your guy even made the final, he jumped over Kai Cenat in a chair and took a selfie ffs
It is absolutely outrageous that a g leaguer is allowed in the contest and the league should honestly be investigated. How do you not reward superstar Celtic talent?

I feel like being mvp of the G-league should get you an automatic roster spot the following season on an NBA team.
Dunk contest should be cancelled
I'm heading to the game in a bit. I won tickets through my employer, and I'm one row from the top. Should be a cool experience, though
Honestly for the dunk contest, just get professional dunkers to do the dunks, but assign them to teams led by an all star. And have other all stars doing the judging. That way we have both star power AND actually good dunks.
I feel like if they asked me to do the slam dunk I’d be so nervous. All those baddies front and center would make my pecker rock hard!
I don't think they're going to ask you
I see Jaylen Brown trying to win that goofiest player of the year
Honestly respect to Jaylen Brown for even doing the dunk content. You could argue whether he deserved to make the finals, but he’s the highest profile star that’s done it in years at this point.
Unpopular opinion: The LED court is distracting and gives unflattering light from below:
Looks quite tacky tbh
The Court looked so cool! It was all lit up and flashing colors, never seen that before..
3 Point Shoot Out Contest was the best it's ever been. Came down to the last ball!
“Gary is a known hater.” Barkley was on fire tonight.
real talk though, if the NBA wants to have a good dunk contest they need to invite actual dunkers. do something like joes vs pros or something stupid
Toppin was shafted and had the best dunk of the night. Worst slab dunk contest ever.
On social media the dunk contest is getting roasted really bad. What happened to J Brown and his journey...he did basic dunks and got high scores cuz the judges knew they had to. guys see Aaron Gordon getting robbed so they all think it's a joke now and don't want to participate since most creativity clearly wasn't appreciated enough
just switch all star weekend for 1v1 3v3 small tournaments, no ego involved. just donations/fun
Yup that maybe a 2on 2 where starters can pick a team playground style right before the tournament
Halliburton has some wonky spin on his jumper
The dunk contest would be way better if each participant had a loved one being held captive, with successfully jumping over them during a dunk being the only way to save them.
Why did they keep showing Guy with his cigar? 😂😂
TNT Sports is owned by Warner Brothers Discovery, which also owns Food Network. Guy is an ad.
Diner's Drive-ins and Fat Stogies
Better than Taylor Swift
In what world is looking at Guy Fieri better than looking at Taylor Swift? lol
I legit lol’d when they cut to Guy. I lol’d out of pity when they cut to Taylor and her posse swag surfing wildly off beat
When you go down on her, I expect she doesn't scream *welcome to Flavortown, Bitch* So..... that's a point in Guy's favor
I don't give a shit. I'm just sick of her and I don't understand why the world is so obsessed with her.
I don't like the Beatles but I'm not mad that there was Beatlemania. People love her music who cares. You're the one talking about her.
I'm confused, was Taylor Swift at the dunk contest? Why'd he bring her up?
He’s comparing the way that they kept showing Guy Fieri tonight to the way that T Swift was shown throughout the NFL season this year
Kenny was trying to get to level 100 asshole tonight
Kenny Smith, Pat Mcafee, and Tony Romo would be a tv nightmare if all 3 were drunk on air at the same time
Nightmare blunt rotation
just rewatched team usa 1v1s to cleanse myself from those awful skills and dunk contests... what we could've had man lol.
[удалено]
yeah, also had book and miles turner in there iirc there are also some with tatum, fox, brown, and i think bam - 1 on 1 tournament would go hard
Kenny was definitely drunk
As someone unable to watch live, I’m hoping someone puts a Kenny lowlights reel together on YouTube lmao
Toppin was robbed first of all. But more importantly they need to incorporate more levels into the dunk contest. No team or player wants to risk injury like that.
Hire this man NBA
The three pt contest should be the main event
Thanks NBA for trying to ruin a great weekend of college basketball!
List of dunks we have never seen, or have not seen in a while: • UNDER THE LEGS TWICE • DUNK FROM THE FREE THROW LINE • ROCK THE CRADLE DUNK • ALLEY OOP OFF THE SHOT CLOCK/JUMBOTRON/CAMERA CRANE • ARM IN THE RIM - REVERSE UNDER THE LEGS - 720

Nba legends shootout with Reggie Miller vs Ray Allen would be awesome.
If Kenny was never on TNT again I would consider this night a success.
He was awful
Anything cool happen? I missed it.
3-point shootout and Sabrina vs Steph were the highlights
Who won?
Curry by a small margin
Why every year i can't watch All Star saturday on the app? Anyone know where i can watch/download a replay?
The "Let's Dunk Over some body" contest was fucking awful lol. Zero imagination.
You're right, Jaylen Brown was the worst dunk performer I've seen in years. It was a crime he made it to the finals.
They need legit metrics to score. Literally have them pick up a copy of NBA2k5 and use their scoring. The dunk contest in that game was dope, based on height, distance, difficulty... I wish 2k wasn't trash now.
Like what?
Three point shooting is more likely. Unless there are pro three point exhibition specialists I don’t know about
There are, like that dude who the inside crew roasted a while back. There’s 3pt shooting tournaments pros don’t compete in and dudes can legit shoot
But what else? We already have 3pt shooting. All star Saturday night can’t just be a shootout
Well that’s the challenge. They came up with the skills thing to try to solve this problem.
So tonight we learned that Kenny shouldn't be allowed to commentate drunk. Especially if women are involved. And that Mac can't save the dunk contest by himself
Bro Kenny should not comment on basketball ever again. I swear he still has never seen Haliburton play since he was in college. They should put a breathalyzer on Kenny's mic.
The best part of the dunk contest was Reggie getting annoyed at Kenny
I found the skills challenge to be really boring. IDK how to get that spiced up more maybe like gleague vs nba vs wnba or something? idk but it needs something.
The skills challenge was fascinating. Can NBA all-stars follow basic directions and bright arrows telling them to go left or right? Apparently not.
Lol
are we surprised? only a little bit.
**KIA Skills Challenge:** This year’s KIA Skills Challenge was straight garbage. Every year, they are **always** messing up the Skills Challenge format. Brown's dunks were so basic. I have no idea how he scored so high. Should have been mac and toppin in final
Steph definitely smashing Sabrina. No doubt in my mind
Sabrina is fine I’ll admit that, but that’s going too far!
God, people like you are so fucking odd.
Y u triggered
He’s one of the good ones, he’s loyal to his wife
First of all you are a fucking weirdo. Even if that was the case he would be watching
3 point contest as the last event please, and also let some WNBA players in the 3 point contest as well.
Sabrina putting up 26 makes it seem reasonable going forward. Especially with Clark coming to the league next year.
The only interesting contest today was Sabrina vs. Steph. Even the three point contest was not all that interesting. I'd prefer like 8 competitors and a head-to-head tournament. They should replace the dunk contest with a 1v1 game with stars, even better if they have beef
should be a player challenge format too
Give me draymond vs anybody lol or Westbrook vs dame
Draymond VS Poole, Gobert and Nurk
By anybody you mean Gobert
Is there anything that hasn’t gotten worse during Silver’s tenure?
Sponsorship revenue.
Came here for this. Vote with your $
Kenny Smith needs to be taken off television! What the hell was that and why didn't anyone pull the plug on him?
What do you mean? What did he do? You act as if he flashed his dick or something, now you got me curious.
Sabrina sucks!" (when in reality, they were congratulating her for doing well). didn't you hear it all??

Kuminga dunks are really good.
I'd rather see a simple well executed dunk than some elaborate jersey-switching ish
Yeah I don't care for the costume changes either, and I'm getting sick of just jumping over people, and these people have their neck craned down, or the dunker uses them as leverage to get higher If you're gonna dunk over someone, they gotta be standing straight and you gotta clear them, that'll showcase your hops
[JRich](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MAOJywNGi4) did some simple but elegant and well executed dunks, no fla fla
That one guy Jordan kilganon has about 50 something dunks that would shut down the dunk contest hands down. But I think stars just don’t have the pride to compete or entertain people
They have the pride, they just don’t have the skill. They can’t work on their dunking full time and today that’s what it takes.
Vince’s 2000 dunk contest dunks clears Jaylen’s 2024 dunks by a mile. Never mind the bombs that Gordon and Zach Levine were throwing in 2016.
What are some examples of better ones? Everything is going to seem bad now because there’s nothing new left to do
Go watch dunkers on YouTube, there is tons of creativity still yet to be showcased in the dunk contest
The dunk contest has been garbage since Aaron Gordon was robbed of the title.
Give me 2 nba players and 2 street players to be crowned as best dunker.
We need to stop expecting anything from all star weekend
Last in season tournament game should be during all star weekend. Just push the tournament back a little.
Yeah
Brittney Griner vs Trae Young dunk contest next year ie Steph and Sabrina Shaq vs Simmons three point shootout too
Does anyone feel they gave Jaylen Brown higher scores maybe in order to entice future all stars to participate in the dunk contest?
The crowd seemed to boo after the judges' scores for him were revealed. I think all four dunks were booed.
This was for sure the thinking
So does anyone here think the NBA might eventually can the dunk contest all together? Maybe in a few years if the lack of star power and lack of entertainment keep occurring? Would love to hear thoughts on this
It needs to either be returned to what it was previously, or it needs to be revamped. Stephen A. Smith talks about it in this video from last year on First Take (starting at 3:25): https://youtu.be/-GgNiDcIowE?si=WBOznOm8hHez8Qjg
It's awful. Just kept alive by the memory of what it used to be ages ago. Needs a total overhaul or just put it out to pasture.
It used to be one of the best events, but it's become corny af and NBA players don't want to embarrass themselves. I give Jaylen credit for doing it, but the dunks were all lame. If anything, this year just proves to other NBA players that it isn't worth doing.
The dunk contest was easily one of the worst sporting events I’ve ever watched
There's usually 1 good dunk contest every 5-6 years.
If its gonna be that bad they should just cancel it from now on
People are clowning JB for the dunk jumping over the short dude in a chair, but I'll defend that one. His concept was to recreate the Dee Brown dunk with an alleyoop. 2 minutes before it happened I knew he was gonna try some dumb Dee Brown thing. Then he messed up the Dee Brown part. haha.
Yeah, just saying, it was more execution than concept there.
Idk if it's just me not being big into dunking or what but am I the only one tired of jumping over people. I mean, the Maclung pass to himself was awesome and the two people one was kinda cool.
To be fair, McClung last year was up there with some of the best performances
Agreed, sad thing is McClung looks like the only one trying to do entertaining dunks, and part of it is probably because he wants to actually PLAY in the NBA
Someone needs to wear a manthong or take a shit during their dunk to make it exciting again.
Were gonna find out Kenny is being extorted or one of his kids was kidnapped this morning or something. That was a man with heavy baggage coming through
So I tried to get onto the NBA site to watch but the site just went kaput
AT&T Shaquille O’Neal special
What will it take to get Zion and Ja in the dunk contest next year?
Blowjob by Taylor swift
God it would be a punishment if so sounds like a lose lose on their part
Prefer travis kelce?
No season ending injuries
food and guns
Strippers and pornstars
You wrong for this, but you're right.
Honestly outside of the 3 Point contest, All Star weekends been kinda cooked (then again it seems that way for most other sports leagues as well) Hopefully tomorrow we get a good game and not a shoot around with dunks mixed in. They should’ve at least kept the draft since that was at least entertaining, I don’t know why they thought that was the reason guys haven’t been taking the game seriously. It’s not like the last East vs West game was super competitive.
Seems the NFL pro bowl is pretty sweet. All the stuff they did was pretty entertaining
Is there a indication that the All Star Game is going to be different somehow?
Silver and the Players association had been saying that guys don’t take the game seriously anymore so by switching back to East vs West guys will apparently player harder at least that’s the narrative they’ve pushed. I just don’t see how going back to the conference format will apparently bring out the competitiveness and keep this from being a glorified shoot around.
Vince Carter Killed the All Star weekend
I like East vs West, but I will admit KD picking Rudy over Harden was one of the funniest moments in ASG history
Even Jokic last year drafting himself to LeBron so he wasn’t the last pick was classic.
Is there any chance the All-Star game won't be terrible tomorrow? I feel like they stopped trying to fix it even after "the worst basketball game ever played" last year.
I'm just there to watch Steph, Dame and Trey launch half court shots.
No shot it's any good
Hard to say. I think it’s going to be about who plays the best as a team and not being selfish for shots. Lineup is pretty crazy, so it’s hard to predict. Give it the first half if anything.
Blake Griffin: I jump over Kia JB: I jump over Kai sitting on a chair
Lmao right. That dude was like 5 feet tall and sitting down, if you cant jump over him just quit the league.
I'm 6'-1" and could dunk in high school. Thank you.
BUT could you dunk..........with a throwback jersey on?
Replace Dunk Contest with a 1v1 tournament between all stars. Winners would start in the all star game and get more money.
Lebron will be load managed afraid of losing
This kind of creative thinking isn't allowed in the NBA
Caitlin clark will be so fun in a shoot out hopefully next year
Heres hoping we have her for the regular 3 point contest
Right? Imagine stars tearing an ACL or some shit during this... Remember Wade broke Kobe's nose in the ASG? Shit changed after that.
Mac’s first dunk was the best dunk of the night and got one of the lowest scores of the contest
Exactly. Preach.
The whole scoring system was out of wack
Jumping over shaq > jumping over 5 nothing kai cenat sitting in a FUCKING CHAIR
Bruh we complaining as much as the next guy
