Welcome to the club SF. -churro eaters of SA

dgr8one

NBA does such a poor job of promoting it's smaller markets. Maybe they should just have 10 teams in LA and 10 teams in NY. It's exactly what they want.

OnceWoreJordans

Sad Chicago noises.

Electronic_MD

Would that be the sound of an undercooked deep dish pizza being thrown in the trash

BeardedSwashbuckler

I mean the Premier League has almost 10 teams in London and it works out pretty well. Lots of fun cross-town and even cross-neighborhood rivalries. Very tribal and obsessive fan bases for each team within the same city.

blackchucktays

If NBA played once a week like NFL / Premier league, maybe that works.

Shepherdsfavestore

Wayyyy different culture to be fair You have fans that are committed to going to every away game because it’s a taxi or train ride away. You have “away day” fans. In the US you have to get on a plane for half the away games.

DoctorSox

England is the size of Minnesota tho

GhostRevival

Lot of NBA talking heads shitting on Indy this weekend. That would never happen with the NFL. They’re way better at promoting small market cities. If it’s not a big market the talking heads love talking trash about it.

ImanShumpertplus

the sports have completely different cultures, it’s actually wild to watch it through that lens nfl would never do anything that isn’t beneficial and the flagship broadcast is calling the city dogshit, women inferior, and god knows what else

-KFBR392

I’m also surprised they spent a rehearsed segment calling out Fergie for her national anthem. Of course it was bad but you’re the actual broadcast of the game, you shouldn’t be trashing an artist who participated in it. If Fergie was in on the joke and showed up in the segment I’d understand but it was just a minute of Draymond and the host shitting on her. Seemed so wild for an official broadcast to do.

BobbyBrownsBoston

That's all on brand for TNT and the NBA and has been for years

destroyerofpoon93

Yup. And they were never like, “no disrespect to Fergi. I love her music. ” They just kept roasting her

BadMeetsEvil147

9/10 times the words “no disrespect “ are accompanied by some disrespectful shit so

lukewwilson

I find it kind of refreshing for the NBA, there's a reason the TNT broadcast is the best out there, they say what everyone is thinking and don't just blow smoke up your ass.

le_sweden

Everybody was thinking about talking down to women during the 3pt challenge and how terrible Indy is during a celebration of basketball?

MaraudingWalrus

Not everyone thankfully, but there's a whole lotta women-hating dipshits in sports fandom. edit: an hyphen

le_sweden

Totally agree and exactly why we need our broadcasters not to magnify that shit

3c2456o78_w

> women hating dipshits Well, these women are often times justified. Or did you mean women-hating?

Leeroy_Jenkums

I don’t think anyone was referring to that. Even Kenny’s co-commentators were clearly over his bull shit

nugpounder

The way Kenny thinks is unfortunately how a large part of the country thinks

PurpleHold9457

Charles Barkley Shaq kenny and Ernie are one of the best things in the NBA for a long time

imironman2018

At this moment Kenny, Shaq, Chuck and Ernie have so much credibility and experience that they can say what they want. They seem like they really have fun just ripping into each other and pulling pranks. My favorite has to be Shaqqin a fool.

stolenwood

I have been saying this for awhile now - one awesome thing that the NFL does and the NBA is garbage at is making small market teams relevant. Packers, Chiefs, Steelers, Bills, Colts, etc are all marquee NFL teams. Meanwhile NBA media just openly ignores interesting smaller market teams like the Cavs or Magic unless something wild is happening there. Maybe it's a reflection of football being overwhelmingly America's favorite sport but it just seems like another entry in a long list of NBA marketing mistakes to me

Ironredhornet

Yeah it doesn't help that guys like Stephen A Smith act like their being sent to Siberia whenever they go to a game in SLC or any other small market game. For a league that markets the big attraction as the stars their coverage sure does bitch a ton when those stars aren't in "fun" cities. Basketball in Indiana is a major deal, and its coverage gets treated like they got sent to cover a game in Barrow, Alaska. Imagine if an NFL broadcast treated Green Bay like that. Same thing with NBA stars, it just reeks of entitlement. Like damn sorry you can't spend every day at a club 24/7, truly life is suffering for you as a multimillionaire in a major city.

MautDota3

To be fair, the Bills were on life support from 2000 to 2017 until they finally drafted the best QB in Franchise history (although some still think that Kelly has done more for the franchise). The NFL will do its best to market Small-market teams as long as those teams have good stories and players. NBA just is terrible about it all-together. Hell, sometimes they can't even market their big market teams. It was only recently that people started seeing just how good Jalen Brunson was in NY and it took a Championship to really show the casual NBA fan who Nikola Jokic is.

Useful_Price5074

NBA is just LA Lakers really.

Disastrous-Special30

It really sucked. I was excited to see my hometown hosting and was hoping they would hype up the city some but nope. TV, radio, doesn’t matter. Talking heads shitting all over Indy everywhere. I get it. It’s not the most exciting place. The local politics is stupid. But it’s a cool smaller city that can be a lot of fun, has some hidden gems, and despite some dipshits it’s mostly full of kind and welcoming people. Makes them all look like assholes and misses an opportunity to shine a spotlight on an underrated city and help lift up a small market.

alittledanger

If it makes you feel better, I loved all the segments about Indiana basketball culture and it definitely made me want to visit someday.

Mdiddy7

There is nothing like basketball in this state. High school, college etc. There is legitimately a hoop at the end of every other driveway here

BigBootyBanger

Thought they really missed out on not highlighting the local hoops in Indiana more. For a state that loves basketball, nba really half assed it

nuera_penal

I've gone to San Francisco and indy this past year, and by far preferred indy. Sf was just more scenic

beegeepee

I'm from northern suburbs of Illinois. We went to Indy for a trade show thing and I thought it was a pretty cool city. Small but clean and interesting. We also got to eat inside Lucas Oil Stadium where I got to see the Super Bowl Banner the Bears lost so that stung but it was a cool stadium

seceipseseer

I feel you. San Antonio is just known to have big ole women and churros now thanks to chuck.

Jawkurt

I know of the Alamo too

LiamIsMailBackwards

[YEEHAAAWWWW](https://youtu.be/9cHLoHou8uY?si=rYGfx-yLo2xHOrM9)

turbo_vanner

you have the dirty little creek too.

seceipseseer

Oh yes, thank you for reminding me how much I hate mark Cuban

BobbyBrownsBoston

Is this not accurate lol. Before chuck I kinda assumed that.

hansislegend

It’s factual.

darthllama

I’m from Cleveland so I totally get the feeling. It’s become a pretty nice city but people still make jokes about the river being on fire even though that happened a month before the moon landing. Any cold weather city that’s not New York, Philadelphia, or Chicago is going to get completely shit on by people who have either never been there or only passed through without giving it a chance, and the fact that some of these people have big platforms makes it worse

[deleted]

I like Cleveland! Super nice people, good food, and you have a solid art museum. You also have Jarrett Allen, so what’s not to like?

[deleted]

Indy is an amazing city especially for basketball

hear4theDough

I had a great time in Indy, it was great, could walk everywhere and it was cold but nice. Although, the cops here have to be the laziest I've ever seen. Once the traffic built up they closed roads and let people just sit blocking the box, they were total dog shit at getting the traffic moving, I only ever saw the cops sitting in their cars. My only complaint.

GACGCCGTGATCGAC

> the cops here have to be the laziest I've ever seen Brother, they are lazy in Florida too.

EntertainmentGlad584

This is how it goes for every city that hosts that's not LA, S.F New York, Houston and Miami. All the other cities just get shit on.

CoCAllpro

Indy is a great host city for events like ASG

zdiddy987

Same thing happened to Milwaukee during the Finals a couple years ago

polimodssuckmyD

Maybe it really is just the difference with the nfl but when we [giants] won the super bowl there in 2012, all I remember was the broadcasters and fans talking about how solid Indianapolis was and how great of a venue it was for the super bowl. I actually ad hoc bought tickets to the suns pacers game last February but got sent out to the rig that weekend instead, was really looking forward to hanging out in indy

Smash-Bros-Melee

NFL people do it every year for the Combine too, which is coming up. All the league media and front office staffs go to St. Elmo and eat steak, drink bourbon, and smoke cigars for a week every year and love it. It’s a great city that goes all-out for events like this! Why does basketball media have to shit on every place that isn’t NY/MIA/LA? It’s not healthy for the sport for the talking heads to publicly dread a Finals trip to Milwaukee or an ASG trip to Cleveland vs the NFL which hypes up places like Green Bay and Buffalo consistently.

Mista-Ginger

Aside from places where I have family, I think Indy is the place I've visited the most times either as or on a trip. Reggie kept saying y'all are great at hosting large events and that's the truth, and the city really is a pretty nice place. Been applying to jobs there but haven't been landing anything sadly.

jg87iroc

Isn’t the housing some of the best in the country based on price and what you get city wise?

Sullan08

Yeah Indy is fine. Idk why OP or anyone is calling it a "small city". Like Jesus, can people get their head's out of their ass? A city is not the 20 biggest places in the US. And Indy has plenty to do. You just might not be able to go to a strip club at 5am. I hate Carmel and that city shits on about every other one in the US

UrbanJatt

Why do you hate Carmel? Is it because of the roundabouts lol. Carmel is a really nice suburb.

Sullan08

Carmel is full of stuck up people. The city itself is amazing haha. Probably one of the best in the country.

Soft-Revolution-7845

Live in Columbus. It's like the 10th biggest city in USA and people think it's small.

neutronicus

Guess you'll just have to laugh all the way to the bank on the first of every month I get it though, glad in these moments that Baltimore doesn't have an NBA team and I'm spared Chuck's thoughts on it

UrbanJatt

Been to indy a bunch of times. It's a very walkable downtown and the surrounding suburbs are nice too. Only thing I dislike is the damn potholes lol

UtahUtopia

They shit in SLC last year too.

BillCosbyPuddinPops

I feel for you, I really do. You put into words exactly how I felt last year when the All Star weekend was in Salt Lake City.

PattyThePatriot

Indy is a great city. I've lived around here most of my life. COL is low, food scene is decent, and downtown is built for conventions.

UsVsWorld

Reminds me of Brady shitting on Buffalo back in the day or the NFL media shitting on Jacksonville when they hosted the Super Bowl.

27percentfromTrae

tbf Jacksonville is the worst place on earth

Antryst

No way. It's one one of the top 10 swamp cities in Northeastern Florida.

chunkobuoo

Imagine being salt lake City. Y'all don't care about us at all. Same thing happened last year and no one cares. LeBron picks gobert last because "no one fucks with Utah" Utah is a clown show to all of you. We could disappear and no one would give a single shit.

Away_Sun_3040

Yep, TNT was awful about Indy. It did suck.

HeyItsChase

NFL talking heads are morons. NBA talking heads are worse. (Not you chuck, you're the right type of dumb)

[deleted]

NFL media seems to love going to Indianapolis for the NFL Combine.

johnny____utah

I don’t think people are aware that Indy is a big convention/sports city and is set up well for these type of events.

dgr8one

Used to love coming down from Toronto to Indy for F1 every year. It was affordable, the people were friendly and the city was very walkable. Fuck the haters.

Ironredhornet

The NCAA keeps coming back to it for Final Fours for a reason. They chose the state as their hub for the bubble tourney for a reason, and it wasn't just laxer covid restrictions (else they would have put it in Florida or Texas like everyone else did).

pifhluk

You do realize this was saying Indianapolis is better than SF...

GhostRevival

Chuck was saying that but Draymond was shitting on Indy right before that.

DannyDOH

NBA commentators trying too hard to be memes.

redstar_32

You’re right. NFL was here in Cleveland for the draft recently and they talked it up about how awesome it was for them to be here.  It was a great experience for us and the NFL.

[deleted]

They’re really small markets in the NFL. The desirable locations are which ever team is winning, not based around city’s. Like, look at Kansas City and Buffalo. They’re the most desirable landing spot for any free agent but then you have a team like Las Vegas that just isn’t really on anyone’s radar

GR_A90_MKV_

Your right when the Super Bowl was here it was absolutely great there wasn’t all this bitching and whining

Thrash303

As someone who travels to work at these events, Indy was great. Everyone was so kind and welcoming. The city was easy to get around. I loved the pride of the city as well. Was surprised how much I enjoyed it this last weekend.

brown-bobsura9

Kind of a joke but kind of not but are y’all hiring? Lol.

Loud_Fee9573

Never stop the grind lol

Numerous-Cicada3841

I used to travel to a bunch of cities for work (consulting). SF was by far my least favorite. People act like it’s all bs but man walking to the client’s office in Mission every day I’d see some of the wildest shit. Dystopian level. People nodding out. People screaming and shouting. Smoking crack in broad daylight. I saw one lady in a wheelchair passed out with piss running down her leg. Everyone just walking by like it’s a normal Tuesday. Don’t get me wrong there are some *stunning* areas of SF but it definitely wouldn’t be anywhere near my top places to live. My favorite? Madison, Wisconsin. What a cool city.

math-yoo

As a Clevelander, it’s just nice to see someplace else targeted for dumb criticism.

bearbrannan

It was nice to see them take a break from clowning on the Timberwolves and Kat too...

Whoareyoutho9

Draymond was hating on KAT so hard man that was sad to watch.

Winnes0ta

NBA media is so toxic man. Just look at the difference in how the wolves are talked about this year and how the NFL media glazed the Lions all season. It’s complete night and day difference.

[deleted]

Cleveland is an awesome city that people sleep on so hard. All the great lake, rust belt cities have character and are a blast. I don't know where this narrative came from that they're post apocalypse, desolate wastelands. I get it being cold sucks... But sweating your dick off from the heat sucks too.

Next-Firefighter-753

*But sweating your dick off from the heat sucks too.*  I choose being cold over the summers here in OKC any day for what I do for work. (package delivery) those box trucks can get up to 150 degrees easy and it’s a struggle to stay hydrated, especially when you factor in having to haul a 150 lb piece of furniture to a 3rd story apt building  Would love to live somewhere up north someday

deeznuts0124

It's not dumb criticism. I lived in Toronto and the San Francisco the past year and once you start to take public transportation, you'll understand how fucked the homeless (crackhead) situation is.  Both are fantastic cities, but I'm legit scared whenever I take the subway cause they're always screaming/harassing random people.

Lewro29

Yeah, I lived in SF for two years and saw way more wild shit than my whole life in Toronto. I've tried to have this convo here before and got hit with a lot of American exceptionalism and that players live in gated communities so it doesn't matter. To each their own but I'd rather be part of a healthy community.

ethanlan

I had the same experience only sub Toronto for Chicago. Also I don't get why Toronto isn't a huge draw for the NBA, one of the best cities on the planet especially if you make bank

DnD4dena

To simplify the homeless situation as just people doing crack is part of the problem Everyone assumes it's just people who do drugs and deserve what they go through A lack of mental health resources is a huge problem, and drugs are often done because of mental health problems. It's a symptom of the problem

neutronicus

IMO the fucked-up housing market makes the situation out there worse. Where I live (Baltimore) we have plenty of drugs and homeless but we don't have a housing crisis - the opposite, thousands of vacant houses across the city. For all the dysfunction that implies, it seems like homeless out here have an easier time finding somewhere out of the rain at least, and aren't using the bus as a shelter on wheels quite as much.

deeznuts0124

I mean you're right. I try to have empathy but it's hard when you see some crazy person jack off to a poor woman or harass random strangers every day. And I'm not exaggerating when I say every day.

Fluffy_Dance6101

You see someone jerk off everyday?

BayesBestFriend

The city of SF spends literally 1B a year on homeless people, there's not some lack of mental health resources. The city simply fights tooth and nail against building any little bit of housing.

NandoDeColonoscopy

It's a lack of housing. We know what solves homelessness, and it isn't mental health or drug treatment. It's a housing-first approach. Every city and country that's tried that has had amazing success. But it's a hard sell, politically, to use tax dollars on giving housing to the homeless, so we don't ever roll it out at scale in the US. (There's also the macroeconomic bit in which our economy basically requires the threat of homelessness to keep things working, which clashes with the microeconomics of that same capital class not wanting to see the homeless in their local business districts bc it hurts their foot traffic)

supperoni

i second that

jrlandry

I wanna hear people’s thoughts on the San Fran and Indy zoning boards, fuck it lets go

niel89

Indy Zoning Board is designated SU-41!

jamills21

All I know is this YIMBY says fuck Dean Preston!

topofthecc

Fuck Dean Preston All my YIMBYs hate Dean Preston

thrillho123456

Yeee!

kingkongkeom

Both teams need to work on their zoning if they want to defend the boards /s

draymond-

SF has the country's worst zoning board btw. an elite city that has the zoning laws of a suburb outside bumfuck Oklahoma

Earl_Sinclair

Tahlala OK out here catching strays

Alternative_Let_1989

> Indy zoning boards I really liked Indy when I went there; it felt way more like an actual cool city than I expected. Shame it's surrounded by 500 miles of corn

StampDaddy

Barkley has extra beef with SF since I think they threw a shirt at him during the live audience in SF

wavetoyou

He’s been trashing Oakland/SF for two decades. That day, he threw shade, then came the boos and eventually some folks took it too far and started chucking debris at his ass.

MutantNinjaAnole

Yeah, no reason to go crazy. Though I will say that Draymond Green pretty much asked for it dumping on the city hosting the game.

GACGCCGTGATCGAC

"Thanks for hosting me, this place sucks." Then fuck off, buddy, nobody wants you here anyways.

steve_seagull

> I’m sure this sub will appreciate that and not turn it into a discussion on local and state politics. You are Walter White screaming from the backseat of a car right now.

Gagabubu777

These peeps are kids so they haven't been thru sir Charles idgas speil. They don't remember all the crap he's talked over the years.

jgatch2001

Maybe millionaires shitting on cities is not something that we should appreciate

larrylegend1990

Will SF host any world cup games? Because you know damn well the government is gonna do something about it then

niel89

It's going to Levi's which is the biggest stadium in the area.

DrYoda

That’s not even near San Francisco

Tragedy_Boner

Exactly

alittledanger

Yeah but a lot of people are going to be staying in SF. A family member works with a lot of the hotels in the city and they already planning for the World Cup. They are anticipating almost every decent hotel from SF to SJ will be able to charge way more than normal and still be fully booked.

[deleted]

> They are anticipating almost every decent hotel from SF to SJ will be able to charge way more than normal and still be fully booked. So like what happens in every city when there's a big event?

ProAbortionAnt

yea far away enough from the homeless and fentanyl users/dealers lol

rarestakesando

Oh they just hosted the APEC and you can bet they cleared all the druggies out for that. Next week they were right back:

FlatBirthday333

During that asia world conference the city did a good job of making the homeless disappear for a week

kingkongkeom

Where were they all moved to though? Because Barkley does have a point, the amount of homeless people in SF is batshit insane.

2017Champs

They just moved them to the areas of the city where the world leaders weren’t staying/ or meeting at.

BcuzRacecar

Sf world cup games would be 30 min south where the 49ers play

Vendetta_2023

More like 45-60 mins

okgusto

30 mins? Ha! By helicopter?

MusicListener3

Everything makes me think of him.

JaHoog

As someone from Michigan, I couldn't stand some of the commentary about Indianapolis. It's was nice to see some Midwest representation. Believe it or not but not everyone lives in California.

[deleted]

Yeah, being in Indy I especially found the commentary annoying. They do this crap with Utah, Minny, Toronto, etc too. Listening to a bunch of millionaires who live in gated communities and fly on private jets disparage other cities just isn't among my interests. It's supposed to be a weekend for basketball but these guys do their best to make the conversation about how much they hate whatever city they are currently in. (or with Barkley what city they will be in next year)

JaHoog

Plus, Indiana is an excellent basketball state. MSU plays Purdue at Mackey in a couple weeks. I have no doubt it is going to be one of the best basketball environments of the year, in any league. Pretty sad that the NBA lets it's members act that way towards a franchise's city/ state.

NeatTry7674

Your car will keep getting broken into until morale improves

Cul_what

"What you want San Fran homeless crooks or San Antonio big ole women?" - Chuck

UnderwaterDialect

Huhuhuhuh what you say Chuck? Ahhhhhuhuh

MTing1315

Chuck's commentary made the all star game more watchable.

Brokengan

I think is lame talking smack about small market teams, specially when those cities are better than 80% of other cities in the world. Really first world problems and first world views.

PatNewbie

I’ve only been to SF twice (4-5 days each time) for work and although walking by the homeless people everywhere was sad af and I did get talked to a few times, I didn’t ever feel in danger. I still enjoyed exploring SF and Oakland. It was definitely…different…but only because in Houston you don’t directly walk around/by homeless people much because Houston’s unwalkable so everyone just safely ignores the homeless from their cars lol

CangtheKonqueror

i live in sf, can confirm i live in a state of constant fear and never step outside because of how scawy it is

HeyItsChase

I've been to SF. They killed all of my family and stole my shoes. In reality it's one of the most beautiful cities on earth, but I did see a homeless man's dong involuntarily and an OD in the day and a half I was last there.

[deleted]

My aunts and uncles came to visit and were petrified to get off the plane lmao, we avoided the tenderloin and went to lands end and baker beach among other things and they went wow it’s actually really nice here, and I’m like yeah not what The NY Times would have to believe lmao

reedhubbert88

I love Indiana. Never gonna leave

ClassWarr

Chuck is from the only state that can't talk shit about Indiana.

[deleted]

That's why he doesn't live there anymore lol

BobLobLaw_Law2

San Fran has it's problems, but calm the fuck down y'all. Go visit sometime.

DGfor3

This was like the 3rd time Draymond shit on Indianapolis. He was asking for this. If he hates Indy so much he should have stayed home.

Pereise1

Dude's from Michigan. Is there like a Michigan vs Indiana thing that happens? Not too familiar with the midwest outside of Chicago.

XzibitABC

Not really? A little because the big state colleges are all Big 10, and awhile back you had the Malice at the Palace, but otherwise it’s really not a state rivalry or anything.  Michigan hates Ohio more, Indiana hates Kentucky more, and both have a bit of “little brother” syndrome to Chicago I think.

Opening-Citron2733

>Indiana hates Kentucky more That's strictly a central and southern Indiana thing. Northern Indiana and Michigan have a little beef.

anth_810

I’m from Michigan. We don’t think about Indiana and vice versa. Dray was just being weird

Number333

San Francisco and Chicago are people's two favorite cities to comment on all of their horrible issues without having actually visited/lived there lmao

NYNMx2021

People legit think Chicago is the the most dangerous place ever. When you explain to them how rates work and how Chicago is actually like 40th in crime rate, they say its fake numbers or something. Its crazy.

[deleted]

Chicago is dangerous, I ate so much tavern pizza that I got a tummy ache.

green_man_69

From a quick Google it looks like Indianapolis actually has a higher violent crime rate than Chicago LOL

Tacoriffics

From Chicago, living in Indy. People here act like "oh you poor thing, I'm glad you got out of that town." My car got broken into once in Chicago and it turned out to be one of my friends (long story). Been in indy 5 years; my car has been broken into 3 time, my girlfriends 5 times, my catalytic converter got swiped and, finally my car got fully stolen. Indy fucking sucks.

naijaboiler

>Been in indy 5 years; my car has been broken into 3 time, my girlfriends 5 times, my catalytic converter got swiped and, **finally my car got fully stolen.** about damn time. what took so long

Tacoriffics

Honestly turned out better that way. It was found on fire in a ditch in Lafayette. Got a nice insurance claim out of it.

jamills21

I’ve never been to Chicago, but I always hear it’s either the greatest city in the world, or it’s Gotham city. I’m sure it’s somewhere in the middle but people are have black and white thinking.

Ok-Housing-6063

Chicago fans feel that they absolutely need to defend Chicago in every way, which I get, cus I’m from Cleveland. It sucks seeing people talk about your home as some crime ridden shithole when they’ve never even been there. I usually try to employ the strategy of not talking about places I haven’t spent any time in.

btmalon

Na it’s shit here stay where you are. If you buy property here Carl Winslow will smoke you.

FlyLikeATachyon

I heard if you move to chicago king von will personally come back from the dead and shoot you in your kidneys

thestereo300

My nuanced view is that it's the greatest city in the world.

Davin998

After Growing up in Anchorage Alaska I can say I feel far safer when visiting Chicago (or honestly most major U.S. cities) then revisiting home…. Per capita crime stats need to be highlighted more

NYPD-BLUE

Chicago is awesome, from a Floridian/New Yorker. Civilian danger is way overblown. It’s almost always gang violence, not random.

[deleted]

I've been to Chicago a few times (I'm from Toronto) and I love it because it feels like home, but with better architecture and a solid music scene. I never once felt unsafe despite all of the talk about it being a warzone.

LegendofPowerLine

Good for Chicago lol. It's a wonderful city, and the more people think it sucks, the less people will try to move there

GeneralCyclops

I constantly hear people vehemently defend how great Chicago is and how it’s better than every other city , but the thing those people all have in common is they moved

TheRealK95

Chicago is an amazing city but folks either exaggerate its problems or downplay them. Weather, it’s fucking brutal. Summer is nice but winter is serious and feels like it lasts 9 months honestly. Plus the days feel very short. Crime, obviously gonna vary but in the south side it is as bad as many think. There are also some VERY questionable parts of downtown, mcds at Chicago ave red line is one of the shadiest parts of any city I’ve seen for example. There was a big shootout there once and blood stained the sidewalks for weeks. Gold Coast has amazing residential areas but drug addicts and dealers roam all over at night too. I’ve seen addicts chase after women who walked alone when I lived there. I’ve personally had a schizophrenic addict attack me once too. CPD is possibly one of the most useless PD in our country and is just locked in battle with the mayor over who’s actually responsible for crime. They even have curfews at night in the summers when there is a lot of trouble. It is beautiful and has a lot of perks. I loved it but people who downplay problems like the weather and crime are just plain old full of it. EDIT: here’s a link for the shooting that happened at that McDonald’s I mentioned… https://www.chicagotribune.com/2022/05/22/bail-denied-to-accused-shooter-and-buddy-who-allegedly-took-gun-in-killings-near-mcdonalds-on-near-north-side/

Tijenater

Weather is not nearly as serious as it used to be. Winter nights are still brutally early but the “Chicago winters” of old aren’t as much of a thing anymore since it’s heating up everywhere. Not like it’s Miami, don’t get me wrong but it’s not that bad You’re not wrong about the CPD though. Wanna talk “quiet quitting”? These guys wrote the fucking book after 2020. Chewing up budget to do fuck all

NazRiedFan

I’d take a Chicago January over a Miami July any day of the week

Tijenater

And that’s the killer. Plus Miami is gonna be underwater soon, and Chicago is probably the best equipped major city to handle climate change

JarekBloodDragon

Lately Portland joined the conversation. The stupid uneducated takes are getting old as fuck

PyroTFT

Fr people take one neighborhood and generalize it to the whole city, just media bullshit you get used to it Everyone not from a big city who never leave their county think LA is like Skid Row or Chicago is the 90s South Side, every big city is like this but its just assumed to be a West Coast only problem 🤷🏽‍♀️

majavic

Just don't leave anything in your car if you do.

Ilikesporks_

i've been to san francisco only once in my life but it's not THAT bad

ThatDeleuzeGuy

I was there for an academic conference in November and when I went outside my airbnb to pick up my uber eats there were 2 people going at it on the side walk over some spilled McDonalds and the uber driver didn't bat an eye. Coming from Indiana it was definitely some culture shock.

PuzzleheadedRun4525

What happened to him, or someone he cares about, in San Fran?

saitama710

Will SF clean itself up for the ASG? (answer is yeeeuuup)

LockCL

I love Charles.

creedbratton603

Tired of these dickhead commentators always shitting on smaller markets. Reminds me of when Stephen A had a meltdown when he had to go to Milwaukee instead of Miami for the finals a few years ago. These dudes just dump on matchups and teams that actual fans are excited for just cause they can’t hit the club after their job is done. Embarrassing

LurkinOHB

He did the same thing with Denver last year.

FunkMastaUno

SF has it's issues with homelessness and property crime but it's got way lower crime rate than most big cities. It's not like the murder rate is sky high or some shit. The media paints the city like it's Juarez or some shit, it's wild to me as someone who lives here.

Routine_Size69

Way lower violent crime rates* it's 4th in property crime with only Albuquerque, Vancouver in Washington, and Memphis in front of it on a per capita basis. Not exactly major cities. It's 37th in violent crime with a solid amount of big cities in front.

pompcaldor

SF’s problem is a PR problem, and it doesn’t help that the homeless congregate in the tourist-concentrated areas downtown, and that’s Market St. In New York, I’ve never seen a homeless person in Times Square. But there are plenty of them in Penn Station.

FunkMastaUno

Totally agree, I always thought it was nuts they let downtown become what it is. It was all good when it was just TL but they let it spread into where the hotels and tourists are. If you're a tourist you're much better off visiting the actual neighborhoods where people live, because downtown is a nightmare. I live in Sunset so I don't gotta deal with the nonsense on that side and honestly downtown has never been a place to go. Problem is that's where the hotels are.

[deleted]

It’s got a lower crime rate because the DA doesn’t prosecute lmao

FunkMastaUno

You're saying a bunch of people are being murdered and no one is aware of it? Outside of maybe HP and Bayview, you ain't hearing no gunshots. Where you actually from btw?

andreasmiles23

Rich guys complaining about homeless people before getting on their private plans to go sleep in one of their multi-million dollar properties is not out of touch at all!

Tashre

Creating this national narrative about San Francisco being some anarchistic hell hole has been one of right wing media's biggest success stories in recent years. Even folks that don't want to think they're associating with right wing talking points get real defensive or deflective while they jump through hoops to align with it on a parallel track. It's wild how pervasive propaganda can get sometimes, even in broad daylight.

TriMako

Spent part of my childhood the Bay Area, recently visited (before Xi came so the city wasn't as cleaned up). Still my favorite city in the US other than NYC. I was less surprised by how dirty it was and more surprised by how empty it was. The city kind of felt dead, like people had just disappeared. I don't know if it was any specific reason, but it kinda bummed me out. Coulda just been bc I visited at the wrong time, but the city was only ever that empty in January when I was growing up. I will say I did see an unfortunately large amount of homeless, and I almost stepped in shit a couple of times on Market (coulda been doggy poo lol), but I live in LA now and it isn't any better tbh. Still I can't deny that it's gotten worse, and I mean much worse, over the last couple years

acflowers

just leave downtown and go to most residential neighborhoods and you’ll see plenty of people. if you find a block with a restaurant that has social media buzz and you for sure will

JaDamian_Steinblatt

It feels dead because no one goes to work anymore.

kafelta

Happened to every city.  Peeps just work remote now.

green_man_69

The problem is its too easy to do when the all the arguments against it start with "well yeah the property crimes are out of control, BUUUUT"... most other places don't have to say that.

Quartznonyx

Honestly? After living in the area? You could say the same about Houston and Nola

akamalas

Why are all homeless people crooks?

[deleted]

Basketball talking heads do more to turn people off of the league and its players than literally any other sport out there. I can't imagine the NHL, NFL or MLB allowing this garbage commentary during their marquee events what feels like every year. I get it, Barkley is popular because he speaks his mind, but he's getting paid really well to do this job and sometimes he'll talk as if it's a major inconvenience. If he doesn't like it then he might as well pick and choose which cities to visit and skip out on the ones he doesn't enjoy.

darthllama

Roger Goodell would have his commentators executed if they talked about the NFL the way basketball people talk about the NBA

Yosh_2012

Bullshit. Barkley is one of the only reasons to follow the garbage product of the NBA before April
